Experimental Lymphatic Filariasis In Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus): Molecular Cloning And Expression Of Gerbil Cytokines And Measurement Of Cytokine Gene Expression During A Primary Infection Of Brugia Pahangi., Zhiming Mai
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cytokines play an important role in regulation of T cell responses. Two T helper cell subsets have been identified in some species and are defined by their cytokine secretion profiles. Th1 cells produce IL-2 and IFN-$\gamma,$ whereas Th2 cells express IL-4, IL-5, and IL-10. Precursor T cells that express a mixture of these cytokines are considered Th0 cells. It is hypothesized that primary infections of Brugia pahangi in gerbils induce an initial Th0 or Th1 like response which with time becomes a Th2 like response. To test this dynamic parasitism induced shift in cytokine profile, it is necessary to measure …
Inflammatory Responses Of The Jird To Brugia Pahangi: Parasite Stage Specificity And Role Of The Macrophage., Carmen Nasarre
Inflammatory Responses Of The Jird To Brugia Pahangi: Parasite Stage Specificity And Role Of The Macrophage., Carmen Nasarre
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The host systemic and peritoneal inflammatory responses against different stages of Brugia pahangi were compared in intraperitoneally infected-jirds. Systemic inflammatory responses were assessed by measuring the pulmonary granulomatous response to B. pahangi antigen-coated beads (PGRN). Peritoneal inflammation was characterized by enumeration of different cell types in peritoneal exudates following infection. Further, the toxoplasmacidal activity and TNF-$\alpha$-like production of peritoneal macrophages were also characterized. Infection with L3, L4, male worms, female worms, microfilariae (MF) or dead adult worms induced a rapid PGRN. This response decreased to levels of controls in jirds inoculated with living parasites at the chronic time period, indicating …
Discontinuous Technological Change And Institutional Legitimacy: A Morphological Perspective., Robert Nicholas Mcgrath
Discontinuous Technological Change And Institutional Legitimacy: A Morphological Perspective., Robert Nicholas Mcgrath
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Technological innovation is an important consideration to many strategic managers and thus is important to research in Strategic Management. Deepening the field's understanding of what technology is and how it works can be facilitated by participating in a growing dialogue between the Strategic Management and Management of Technology communities. This dissertation considers elements of both fields and examines the premise that at the industry level, incumbents act to manipulate the "share of mind" or "cognitive legitimacy" of the performance and cost/price characteristics of product-technology innovations that, in aggregate, portend to either enhance or destroy prevailing industry competences. A forecasting technique …

A School For Utopia: Marietta Johnson And The Organic Idea., Janet Ruie Mcgrath
A School For Utopia: Marietta Johnson And The Organic Idea., Janet Ruie Mcgrath
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This history, written from a feminist perspective, uses historical materials which trace unusual social and educational experiments in Fairhope, Alabama, in the early twentieth century. The early development of the utopian Fairhope community, founded by E. B. Gaston and a group of like-minded midwestern social reformers, is reviewed. Gaston's resolve to alleviate the worst inequities of monopolistic capitalism through practicing the single tax principles of Henry George is placed in historical context. Both the social experiment and its ideologically complementary Organic School are situated within the period known as the progressive era which followed closely upon the industrial revolution. The …

Groundwater Flow With Heat And Solute Transport In Sedimentary Basins., Guichang Lin
Groundwater Flow With Heat And Solute Transport In Sedimentary Basins., Guichang Lin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Numerical experiments were undertaken to understand (1) heat and fluid transport in an uplifted foreland basin where fluid flow is driven by topographic gradient, and (2) effects of expulsion of geopressured fluids on the thermodynamic system in salt basins. Thermal evolution of an uplifted foreland basin is strongly affected by thermal buffering of basement rocks. Thermal buffering by basement rocks does not permit constant heat flow along the sediment-basement contact, in contrast to many previous numerical studies. Ignoring basement effects can result in serious errors in temperature prediction, such as a false transient thermal pulse in the discharge area. Carbonaceous …
Image Analysis Quantification Of Decondensation Of Bovine Spermatozoa And Pcr Amplification Of A Y Chromosome Specific Sequence., Hilde Christina Steinholt
Image Analysis Quantification Of Decondensation Of Bovine Spermatozoa And Pcr Amplification Of A Y Chromosome Specific Sequence., Hilde Christina Steinholt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The first objective of this research was to develop a decondensation treatment for bovine spermatozoal DNA that worked consistently across bulls and breeds. The second objective was to use the decondensed DNA for polymerase chain reaction analysis of levels of Y-bearing spermatozoa in different ejaculates and in sex sorted spermatozoa. Decondensation of spermatozoa with dithiothreitol and potassium hydroxide was compatible with in vitro amplification and did not inhibit amplification. The polymerase chain reaction and image analysis were used to differentiate between proportions of Y spermatozoa by measuring fluorescent intensities of electrophoresed, polymerase chain reaction-amplified DNA. There were differences in intensities …

Modeling Physical And Chemical Nonequilibrium Transport Of Herbicide In Soils From Different Tillage Systems., Shikui Xue
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The physical and chemical nonequilibrium transport of alachlor were studied in a surface Gigger soil from different tillages through tracer studies, and batch and miscible displacement experiments. Batch experiments indicated initially fast reaction followed by slow adsorption. Adsorption and desorption results indicated time dependent hysteretic behavior and was best described by a multireaction model incorporating nonlinear equilibrium reaction, a reversible kinetic mechanism, and a consecutive irreversible mechanism. The model predicted alachlor hysteresis and adsorption-desorption kinetics satisfactorily based on parameters obtained from adsorption experiments. Tracer (Eosin Y and Blue FCF dyes) studies showed non-uniformly stained areas in undisturbed soil cores (6.4 …
Work Motivation And Perceived Organizational Effectiveness In Middle Schools., Cynthia Young Wren
Work Motivation And Perceived Organizational Effectiveness In Middle Schools., Cynthia Young Wren
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this study was to determine the linkage between work motivation derived from the expectancy theory and perceived organizational effectiveness derived from the Parsonian framework. School characteristics of community type, school size, and school socioeconomic status were used as predictor variables in the study. A secondary purpose was to examine these linkages in middle schools and to examine changes over time. Mixed methodologies, including quantitative and qualitative research techniques, were employed. The data were analyzed using the school and the individual teacher as units of analyses. To test the hypotheses, a multiple regression procedure was employed. The …
Children's Relative Influence In Purchase Decision-Making: A Multi-Theoretical Approach., Laura Ann Willis Williams
Children's Relative Influence In Purchase Decision-Making: A Multi-Theoretical Approach., Laura Ann Willis Williams
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sociological changes in the American family have positioned children to wield greater power in family purchase decisions. Although past descriptive research has confirmed that children are an important source of power in the household, this research has not explored the conceptual justification for the observed patterns of children's relative influence. To fill this gap in the family decision-making literature, this research develops a multi-theoretical conceptual model to explain children's relative influence in a purchase context. Social power theory, resource theory, social exchange theory, and social comparison theory were the conceptual frameworks for this research. Six studies were conducted, including a …
Robust Sensor Fusion Algorithms: Calibration And Cost Minimization., Richard Ree Brooks
Robust Sensor Fusion Algorithms: Calibration And Cost Minimization., Richard Ree Brooks
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A system reacting to its environment requires sensor input to model the environment. Unfortunately, sensors are electromechanical devices subject to physical limitations. It is challenging for a system to robustly evaluate sensor data which is of questionable accuracy and dependability. Sensor fusion addresses this problem by taking inputs from several sensors and merging the individual sensor readings into a single logical reading. The use of heterogeneous physical sensors allows a logical sensor to be less sensitive to the limitations of any single sensor technology, and the use of multiple identical sensors allows the system to tolerate failures of some of …
Dynamic Storage Allocation Using Simon's Model Of Information Usage., Rachelle Folse Cope
Dynamic Storage Allocation Using Simon's Model Of Information Usage., Rachelle Folse Cope
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In today's rapidly changing field of Management Information Systems (MIS) one problem faced by organizations is the consumption of storage capacity due to the growing base of software assets. Research has shown that very few firms effectively monitor program usage. Storage management issues arise due to the fact that many of the programs occupying valuable storage space are used infrequently. In this dissertation, we apply Simon's model of information usage in order to model the dynamic behavior of program usage. This methodology enables organizations to identify the changing usage frequencies of software assets. We propose a classification scheme which MIS …
The Role Of Environmental Attitudes In Incentive-Based Environmental Management: The Case Of The Wetland Reserve Program., Assane Diagne
The Role Of Environmental Attitudes In Incentive-Based Environmental Management: The Case Of The Wetland Reserve Program., Assane Diagne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Environmental policy in the United States is increasingly relying on incentive-based mechanisms (IBM). Incentive-based mechanisms, are voluntary environmental management instruments based on free market environmentalism, a framework that attempts to harness market forces. A multi-disciplinary approach was developed to evaluate participation decisions in IBM's such as the Wetland Reserve Program. This approach extended the traditional utility maximization approach to choice behavior by including alternative measures of environmental attitudes based on the theory of reasoned action or the New Environmental Paradigm. The addition of these psychological constructs conceptually improved the utility maximization by allowing the consideration of well established determinants of …
Fluorescence Polarization Studies: A Global View Of Molecular Photoionization Dynamics Over An Extended Energy Range., Romith Ranjan Das
Fluorescence Polarization Studies: A Global View Of Molecular Photoionization Dynamics Over An Extended Energy Range., Romith Ranjan Das
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The experimental technique of measuring the degree of polarization of the fluorescence from electronically excited molecular ions is used to determine the alignment of N$\sb2$, CO and N$\sb2$O photoions over an extended range of excitation energy. The polarization of $\rm CO\sp+(B\sp2\Sigma\sp+\to\ X\sp2\Sigma\sp+),\ N\sb2\sp+(B\sp2\Sigma\sb{u}\sp+\ \to \ X\sp2\Sigma\sb{g}\sp+)$, and $\rm N\sb2O\sp+\ (A\sp2\Sigma\sp+\ \to\ X\sp2\Pi)$ fluorescence over a 200 eV photon energy range is used to interpret the oscillator strength distributions for normally unresolved degenerate ionization channels. The results show the influence of a CO $4\sigma\to k\sigma$ shape resonance clearly, and agreement between theory and experiment is excellent. The N$\sb2$O experimental results indicate …
Contextual Influences On Consumer Perceptions Of Tensile Price Claims In Retail Advertisements., Katherine A. Fraccastoro
Contextual Influences On Consumer Perceptions Of Tensile Price Claims In Retail Advertisements., Katherine A. Fraccastoro
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation was undertaken to contribute to the discipline of marketing by answering three important research questions: (1) "what are the effects of exaggerated tensile price claims as compared to plausible tensile price claims?", (2) "which alternative framework (assimilation contrast theory or the anchoring and adjustment framework) provides the most suitable explanation of the effects of exaggerated tensile price claims on consumer perceptions and discount expectancies?", and (3) "what role do two contextual variables (consistency and sale-rationale) play in moderating the relationship between the consumer price perception variables and the discount expectancies?". To this end, two experiments were performed with …
The Performance Effects Of Strategy, Top-Management Characteristics, And Environment: An Integrative Study Of Firm Decline And Turnaround., Franz Theodore Lohrke
The Performance Effects Of Strategy, Top-Management Characteristics, And Environment: An Integrative Study Of Firm Decline And Turnaround., Franz Theodore Lohrke
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Despite accumulating evidence, unresolved issues remain as to how the components of strategy, top-management characteristics, and environment, as independent variables, combine to affect a firm's success or failure in turning around declining performance. To address such issues, this dissertation developed and tested a series of hypotheses that investigates the effects of strategy, top-management characteristics, and environment on performance. Findings show that turnaround strategy alone is insufficient to explain differences in performance among firms. They also provide some support for the importance of TMG-strategy interaction and show a limited role for the environment in a firm's turnaround. Additionally, the findings show …
The Amazon Myth In Western Literature., Bruce Robert Magee
The Amazon Myth In Western Literature., Bruce Robert Magee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation identifies and evaluates the ways in which the Amazon myth has functioned. The Amazon myth functions within broader discourses about the Orient, Africa, and women. It has implications for the ways we define "self" and "other." Because they are often represented as a threat to the border from long ago and/or far away, Amazons can serve both as an excuse for fortifying the center against the margin, and as a way of projecting fantasies into the void. The Amazon myth has incited men to action as they have searched for adventure and Amazons abroad. Intended in part as …

The Use Of Communication Facilitators With Severely Brain Injured Non-Responsive Adults., Alisa Judith Mendoza
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Slow-to-Recover (STR) individuals are a subset of the neurologically impaired population who remain non-responsive for extended periods of time before beginning to demonstrate improvement in cognitive, communicative, or motor function. This investigation focuses on the development and implementation of a facilitator-based intervention program carried out with an STR brain injured adult residing in a long-term care facility. The model involved: (1) sensory stimulation techniques to increase responses to external stimuli, (2) augmentative techniques which enabled the subject to control his immediate environment and, (3) training of qualified residents within the facility to act as communication facilitators. Ethnographic procedures were employed …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the role of the principals in predominantly African American urban middle schools with low suspension rates. The basic research questions were: How do the perceptions of principals in predominantly African American urban middle schools that have low suspensions rates compare with perceptions of other principals in predominantly African American urban middle schools; and what alternatives to suspensions do principals use in predominantly African-American urban middle schools that have low suspension rates. I approached this study using a mixed methodology strategy, using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Survey items of 54 principals from seven …
The Effects Of Industry Deregulation On The Stock Market Responses To Earnings Announcements., Wah Poon
The Effects Of Industry Deregulation On The Stock Market Responses To Earnings Announcements., Wah Poon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Many sectors of the United States economy have experienced deregulation during the 1970s and 1980s. This study examines how deregulation affects the informativeness of accounting earnings of firms in deregulation industries. In this study, the informativeness of accounting earnings is measured by the earnings response coefficient (ERC, the slope coefficient in the regression of abnormal stock returns on unexpected accounting earnings). The effects of deregulation on ERCs are examined by (1) comparing ERCs before deregulation to those after deregulation to determine the changes in the magnitude of ERCs due to deregulation, (2) investigating the time series of ERCs after deregulation …
Three Essays On Var Techniques., Omer Ozcicek
Three Essays On Var Techniques., Omer Ozcicek
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation consists of three essays on vector autoregressive (VAR) models. The first examines lag selection criteria. Typically, in VAR models all variables have the same lag length in each equation. Hsiao (1981) and Keating (1994) suggest two ways to estimate asymmetric lag structures. In a Monte-Carlo framework, we simulate eight prespecified VAR models and observe how the lag specification methods perform. We also look at the impulse response and forecast performances of these lag selection methods. We find that the AIC criterion performs better in finite samples than the SIC criterion, and Keating's method is superior to Hsiao's method. …
Experimental Investigation Of Wall And Inertial Effects On A Disk Sedimenting At Low Reynolds Number., Joe Wade Pulley
Experimental Investigation Of Wall And Inertial Effects On A Disk Sedimenting At Low Reynolds Number., Joe Wade Pulley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Measurements have been made of the drag on a thin disk of diameter d moving broadside through a liquid of viscosity $\mu$ and density $\rho$. The liquid is bounded on the outside by a cylindrical tube, diameter D, which is coaxial with the disk. The geometrical parameter $\xi$ = d/D ranges from 0.0189 to 0.112. The Reynolds number Re = $\rho$Ud/$\mu$ ranges from 0.0167 to 6.89. When the measured values are extrapolated to Re = 0, the results agree with the calculations of Shail and Norton. When extrapolated to $\xi$ = 0, the results agree with the matched-asymptotic series solution …
An Integrated Network Architecture For A High Speed Distributed Multimedia System., Nitin Subrao Naik
An Integrated Network Architecture For A High Speed Distributed Multimedia System., Nitin Subrao Naik
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Computer communication demands for higher bandwidth and smaller delays are increasing rapidly as the march into the twenty-first century gains momentum. These demands are generated by visualization applications which model complex real time phenomena in visual form, electronic document imaging and manipulation, concurrent engineering, on-line databases and multimedia applications which integrate audio, video and data. The convergence of the computer and video worlds is leading to the emergence of a distributed multimedia environment. This research investigates an integrated approach in the design of a high speed computer-video local area network for a distributed multimedia environment. The initial step in providing …
Set Redundancy, The Enhanced Compression Model, And Methods For Compressing Sets Of Similar Images., Kosmas Karadimitriou
Set Redundancy, The Enhanced Compression Model, And Methods For Compressing Sets Of Similar Images., Kosmas Karadimitriou
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Image compression is the process of reducing the number of bits required to represent an image. This can be achieved by reducing (or ideally, eliminating) various types of redundancy that exist in the imaging data. All current image compression methods are based on the same theoretical model, which targets redundancy found in individual images. However, this model ignores an additional type of redundancy that exists in sets of similar images, the "set redundancy". The source of set redundancy is the common information existing in more than one image in a set of similar images. Set redundancy can be recognized by …
Chet Baker's Role In The "Piano-Less Quartet" Of Gerry Mulligan., Charles Lester Quinn Jr
Chet Baker's Role In The "Piano-Less Quartet" Of Gerry Mulligan., Charles Lester Quinn Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to discover common traits and characteristics about Chet Baker's early solo style. The primary sources for this investigation were the initial recordings of the "Original Gerry Mulligan Quartet." Since this music was improvised, rather than notated, it was necessary to transcribe the pieces in order to create a musical score. The transcription process included the transfer of the scores to a computerized musical notation program. The resulting scores were then analyzed in order to determine the characteristics of Baker's early playing and solo style, as well as formal structures of the compositions. Chapter one …
Paul Hindemith's "Sonata" For Trombone: A Performance Analysis., Ross Alex Walter
Paul Hindemith's "Sonata" For Trombone: A Performance Analysis., Ross Alex Walter
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Paul Hindemith's Sonata for trombone (1941) is performed frequently on recitals and recordings and has become an important part of the solo trombone repertory. Because of its stature as a cornerstone of twentieth-century solo trombone literature, it is deserving of thorough analysis of its formal plan and harmonic structure. This paper and its accompanying lecture-recital focus on these aspects of the sonata, and on how the performers' understanding of balance, dynamics, climaxes and articulations may contribute to a convincing performance. Its aim is to provide trombonists preparing the work for performance with an analytical foundation that includes specific recommendations for …
The Use Of Norms In The Evaluation Of The Exchange Process: The Consumer Level., Scott Shaw Roach
The Use Of Norms In The Evaluation Of The Exchange Process: The Consumer Level., Scott Shaw Roach
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The disciplines of economics and marketing have suggested that consumers derive satisfaction in exchange transactions from both the attributes of the products exchanged and the stores in which exchange takes place. This satisfaction is based on a comparison of the performance of these relatively objective attributes and a standard--the consumer's expectations of these attributes. Recently, the marketing literature has suggested that an additional source of exchange-related satisfaction may arise from the actual process of exchange itself. Before a thorough understanding of this source of satisfaction can occur, we must gain a better knowledge of both the "attributes" of an exchange …
