Characterization Of Physiological Changes In Roots Grown In Spaceflight Conditions: A Comparison Of Nutrient Delivery Technologies., David Marshall Porterfield Jan 1996

Characterization Of Physiological Changes In Roots Grown In Spaceflight Conditions: A Comparison Of Nutrient Delivery Technologies., David Marshall Porterfield

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The best strategy for providing food and maintaining the environment on long-duration space missions is a bioregenerative life support system based on the growth of higher plants. Before such a system can be implemented, a better understanding of plant growth in space will have to be achieved. Little is known about the role of gravity-dependent physical processes in normal physiological function. A series of ground-based and spaceflight experiments was conducted to examine root oxygen availability in microgravity nutrient delivery systems. In spaceflight experiments Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. plants were analyzed for changes in root medium redox potential and root alcohol …

Students' Understanding Of The Interaction Between Charged Conductors., Chitra Guruswamy Jan 1996

Students' Understanding Of The Interaction Between Charged Conductors., Chitra Guruswamy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes an investigation into students' understanding of the interaction between two charged conductors. The study consists of two parts. The first part is based on interviews and written tests conducted with students in an algebra-trigonometry-based physics course. Results from several tasks are reported. Two of the tasks involve a pair of identical conductors that are given an initial charge, are made to touch each other, and are then separated. In the first task, students were asked to predict the final charges on each conductor. In the second, they were asked to predict the final positions of the charges …

Interrelationships Between Meloidogyne Incognita And Rotylenchulus Reniformis On Soybean., Salliana Ryan Stetina Jan 1996

Interrelationships Between Meloidogyne Incognita And Rotylenchulus Reniformis On Soybean., Salliana Ryan Stetina

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The replacement series approach was used to evaluate competition between Meloidogyne incognita (Mi) and Rotylenchulus reniformis (Rr). In greenhouse tests, soil in pots containing 'Davis' soybean was not infested or infested with 1,000 vermiform nematodes in the following Mi:Rr ratios: 100:0, 75:25, 5:50, 25:75, and 0:100. After 86 days, relative nematode yields (RNYs) (number of each species in mixed culture divided by number in nonmixed culture) were calculated based on soil populations. Calculated values were plotted and the resulting line compared with a reference line representing equal inter- and intraspecific competition. RNYs for Mi were higher than predicted where Mi …

Paleoindicators Of Changing Water Conditions In Louisiana Estuaries., Michael Lewis Parsons Jan 1996

Paleoindicators Of Changing Water Conditions In Louisiana Estuaries., Michael Lewis Parsons

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sediment cores were collected to study the development of eutrophication and hydrological changes in coastal Louisiana. The cores were taken at marsh sites hypothesized to be influenced primarily by riverine inputs (Fourleague Bay-FLB), localized activities (Terrebonne Bay-TSMP), and both riverine and localized processes (Airplane Lake-APL). The sediment cores represented time frames ranging from 330 years (APL) to 70 years (TSMP) BP according to core dating results. Sediment core samples were analyzed for diatoms, other microfossils, pigments, biogenic silica, and sediment characteristics. Additionally, land use records were utilized as a proxy of anthropogenic activities, and to aid in the interpretation of …

Results indicated that technological factors such as …

An-Archy And Justice: An Introduction To Emmanuel Levinas's Political Thought., William Paul Simmons Jan 1996

An-Archy And Justice: An Introduction To Emmanuel Levinas's Political Thought., William Paul Simmons

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Emmanuel Levinas's political thought is best understood as a tension between an-archy and justice. Levinas claims that the aim of philosophy has most often been a search for an arche, or a neuter term that accounts for all of reality. Levinas argues that the reduction of reality to an arche obliterates all transcendence and subordinates man to a totality. Against the predominance of totality in the Western tradition, Levinas proposes a philosophy of transcendence. This transcendence is not found in the direct relationship with God, but in the face of the other person, the Other. Since the face of the …

Oxygen And Ph Regulation Of Protein Synthesis In Mitochondria From Artemia Franciscana Embryos, Kurt E. Kwast, Steven C. Hand Jan 1996

Oxygen And Ph Regulation Of Protein Synthesis In Mitochondria From Artemia Franciscana Embryos, Kurt E. Kwast, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

To identify factors responsible for the down-regulation of mitochondrial biosynthetic processes during anoxia in encysted Artemia franciscana embryos, the effects of oxygen limitation and pH on protein synthesis were investigated in isolated mitochondria. At the optimal pH of 7.5, exposure of mitochondria to anoxia decreases the protein synthesis rate by 79%. Rates were suppressed by a further 10% at pH 6.8, the intracellular pH (pH,) measured under anoxia in vivo. Matrix pH, measured under identical conditions, was 8.43 ± 0.01 at an extramitochondrial pH of 7.9 (mean ± S.E.M. n = 3), 8.05 ± 0.01 at pH 7.5, and 7.10 …

Carbohydrate Mobilization During Germination Of Post-Diapausing Gemmules Of The Freshwater Sponge Eunapius Fragilis, Stephen H. Loomis, Louis F. Ungemach, Bruce R. Branchini, Steven C. Hand, Paul E. Fell Jan 1996

Carbohydrate Mobilization During Germination Of Post-Diapausing Gemmules Of The Freshwater Sponge Eunapius Fragilis, Stephen H. Loomis, Louis F. Ungemach, Bruce R. Branchini, Steven C. Hand, Paul E. Fell

Faculty Publications

Post-diapausing gemmules of the freshwater sponge Eunapius fragilis were found to contain sorbitol and glycogen as their primary carbohydrates. The sorbitol probably acts to increase the tolerance of the gemmules to freezing and desiccation. During germination, average sorbitol levels-measured as micromoles of sorbitol per gram of fresh weight of gemmule tissue (μmol/gfw)-declined from a control value of 36 μmol/gfw to about 4 μmol/gfw. Concomitantly, average glycogen levels increased from a control value of 29 μmol/gfw to a steady-state level of 62 μmol/gfw. It is probable that glycogen is being synthesized at the expense of sorbitol. The breakdown of sorbitol was …

Climate Forcing And Thermal Feedback Of Residual Lake-Ice Covers In The High Arctic, Peter T. Doran, Christopher P. Mckay, W. Peter Adams, Michael C. English, Robert A. Wharton, Michael A. Meyer Jan 1996

Climate Forcing And Thermal Feedback Of Residual Lake-Ice Covers In The High Arctic, Peter T. Doran, Christopher P. Mckay, W. Peter Adams, Michael C. English, Robert A. Wharton, Michael A. Meyer

Faculty Publications

A discontinuous ice coverage and lake temperature record of 36-yr duration has been compiled for Colour Lake (79°25'N, 90°45'W) on Axel Heiberg Island, Northwest Territories. About once every 6 yr, the ice cover remains through the entire summer, creating a residual ice cover the following winter. Residual ice covers are more frequent in the last 10 yr (1986-1995) than in the 20 yr from 1959 to 1978, indicating a reduction in climate factors controlling ice decay. These factors are identified as the number of thawing degree-days, suggesting a tendency toward cooler summers over the last decade. We report year-round meteorology …

Automatic Correlation And Calibration Of Noisy Sensor Readings Using Elite Genetic Algorithms, R. R. Brooks, S. S. Iyengar, J. Chen

Faculty Publications

This paper explores an image processing application of optimization techniques which entails interpreting noisy sensor data. The application is a generalization of image correlation; we attempt to find the optimal gruence which matches two overlapping gray scale images corrupted with noise. Both tabu search and genetic algorithms are used to find the parameters which match the two images. A genetic algorithm approach using an elitist reproduction scheme is found to provide significantly superior results.

This study has led to an improved understanding of the active tectonics and seismic hazards of the northeastern Mojave Desert region and has provided a means with which to assess regional strain models proposed by previous workers. Primary data sets include published and unpublished geologic maps, Landsat Thematic Mapper multi-spectral imagery, SPOT panchromatic imagery as well as hand-held ground and aerial photographs (panchromatic, color and color-infrared), color video, digital topography, gravity, seismicity and paleomagnetic data. Prior to analysis, data sets were organized into a geographic information system implemented on a UNIX workstation. This allowed for the simultaneous visualization of combinations …

Improved Method For Selecting Kick Tolerance During Deepwater Drilling Operations., Shiniti Ohara Jan 1996

Improved Method For Selecting Kick Tolerance During Deepwater Drilling Operations., Shiniti Ohara

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One of the most critical aspects in the design of oil and gas wells is the selection of the depths at which steel casing is set. As the length of open borehole increases, the risk of formation fracturing during drilling operations increases. Formation fracture often leads to an underground blowout that can be very expensive to control. Because of the special problems involved in drilling deepwater well, accurately measuring the risk of formation fracture is essential. A calculated parameter called "kick tolerance" is often used to measure this risk. In this study, improved computer software specifically designed for computing kick …

Reconstructing Educational Experience: A Postmodern Perspective., Jeanne Edwards Robertson Jan 1996

Reconstructing Educational Experience: A Postmodern Perspective., Jeanne Edwards Robertson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Education in America today is dominated by the either/or thinking of modernism. This mode of thought is connected to both the concepts and methods of modern, mechanistic, Newtonian science. However, the attendant reductionistic methodology has been elevated beyond its realm of efficacy to the level of a world view, a metaphysical level. This is demonstrated by the omnipresence of the machine metaphor in all areas of human endeavor. The machine is the root metaphor of modernism. John Dewey speaks of a "new order of conceptions" necessary for significant change. These new order concepts are manifest in the new or postmodern …

Holocene To Late Pleistocene Stratigraphy Of The Mahakam Delta, Kalimantan, Indonesia., Johan C. Sydow Jan 1996

Holocene To Late Pleistocene Stratigraphy Of The Mahakam Delta, Kalimantan, Indonesia., Johan C. Sydow

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Late Pleistocene depositional cycles of the Mahakam shelf contain stratal geometries that indicate a progradational continuum, from falling stage in sea level through to initial rise. These findings contrast with popular sequence stratigraphic concepts which predict that large, rapid sea-level falls, typical of the Late Pleistocene, should result in sediment bypass of the entire shelf. The Mahakam shelf is a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate depositional setting. Extensive, thick carbonate buildups are produced by prolific green algal Halimeda bioherm accretion during transgression and highstand flooding of the shelf. The 60 by 200 km study area lies within 2$\sp\circ$ of the equator, in the …

Impact Of Insecticides On Predators Of The Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens (Walker)., Michael Lynn Boyd Jan 1996

Impact Of Insecticides On Predators Of The Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens (Walker)., Michael Lynn Boyd

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Insecticide toxicity to hemipteran predators (i.e. Geocoris punctipes (Say), Nabis capsiformis Germar, Nabis roseipennis Reuter, and Podisus maculiventris (Say)) was evaluated using three different routes of insecticide exposure (direct contact, indirect insecticide toxicity through consumption of treated prey, and residue uptake). Pirate 3SC$\sp\circler$ (chlorfenapyr) had direct contact toxicity equal to Ambush 2E$\sp\circler$ (permethrin) and Methyl Parathion 4E$\sp\circler$ to most hemipteran predators tested. Exposure to foliage treated with Proclaim 0.16E$\sp\circler$ (emamectin benzoate) usually resulted in lower mortality as compared to Pirate. Condor OF 100F$\sp\circler$ (Bacillus thuringiensis) had the lowest contact toxicity to hemipteran predators of all insecticides tested. Pirate at 0.224 …

The Effects Of Analyst Following On Market Response To Bank Loan Announcements., Joan Marie Brumm Jan 1996

The Effects Of Analyst Following On Market Response To Bank Loan Announcements., Joan Marie Brumm

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A number of theories have been developed that attempt to explain the role of bank loans and public debt in corporate financing. Research suggests that banks may have a comparative advantage in performing at least two valuable functions, information gathering and monitoring. The primary responsibility of analysts is also to gather and disseminate information on firms. However, it is not known how analysts following affects market response to bank loan announcements. The purpose of this study was to (1) determine whether financial analyst following affects market response to bank loan announcements; and (2) to determine whether firms receiving bank loans …

Honduras' Transisthmian Corridor: An Historical Geography Of Roadbuilding In Colonial Central America., Scott Arlen Brady Jan 1996

Honduras' Transisthmian Corridor: An Historical Geography Of Roadbuilding In Colonial Central America., Scott Arlen Brady

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Historical route geographers consider the factors that influenced past roadbuilding, and the changes that result from roadbuilding. The earliest Spanish colonial officials in Central America initiated roadbuilding projects that were sensitive to physical and cultural factors. Officials had to consider the region's aboriginal routes, Spain's trade flows, the isthmus' topography, and the region's population distribution. The roads the Spaniards opened four centuries ago guided early settlement. In some cases, these early roads persist in the region's route network. During the 16th-century Spaniards sought to establish transisthmian roadways that would link Spain's Atlantic and Pacific maritime networks. Partial fluvial routes across …

Automatic Data And Computation Mapping For Distributed-Memory Machines., Isidoro Couvertier-Reyes Jan 1996

Automatic Data And Computation Mapping For Distributed-Memory Machines., Isidoro Couvertier-Reyes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Distributed memory parallel computers offer enormous computation power, scalability and flexibility. However, these machines are difficult to program and this limits their widespread use. An important characteristic of these machines is the difference in the access time for data in local versus non-local memory; non-local memory accesses are much slower than local memory accesses. This is also a characteristic of shared memory machines but to a less degree. Therefore it is essential that as far as possible, the data that needs to be accessed by a processor during the execution of the computation assigned to it reside in its local …

Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatusheme Gene., Georgia Ineichen Jan 1996

Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatusheme Gene., Georgia Ineichen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Rhodobacter capsulatus, a purple nonsulfur bacterium, the tetrapyrrole pathway yields four end products: siroheme, vitamin B12, heme and bacteriochlorophyll. Growth of R. capsulatus under low oxygen tension increases carbon flow through the tetrapyrrole pathway up to 100 fold. The mechanism(s) for this regulation is currently unknown. One regulatory mechanism could be transcriptional control of one or more of the genes in the common portion of the tetrapyrrole pathway. The fifth gene in the pathway, hemE, has been cloned by complementation of an Escherichia coli hemE::miniTn10 mutant. Sequence data of hemE revealed the presence of an upstream palindrome that is …

Importance Of A Siderophore In The Pathogenesis And Virulence Of Photobacterium Damsela Subsp. Piscicida In Hybrid Striped Bass (Morone Saxatili X Morone Chrysops)., John Phillip Hawke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Photobacterium damsela subsp. piscicida, formerly Pasteurella piscicida, is an important new pathogen of hybrid striped bass cultured in brackish water on Louisiana mariculture farms. Louisiana isolates compared with strains of P. damsela subsp. piscicida from Greece, Japan, Israel and Chesapeake Bay, USA and were found to be identical in biochemical phenotype and enzymic activity. Small plasmids of 8 and 5 kb were unique to Louisiana strains. Sequential daily bacteriology and histopathology on hybrid striped bass experimentally infected by immersion revealed that following high doses (13,000 CFU/ml) the gills and spleen are colonized first as early as 24 hours PI, followed …

The "Sacred Harp" In The Urban North: 1970-1995., Mark David Johnson Jan 1996

The "Sacred Harp" In The Urban North: 1970-1995., Mark David Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1994 the Sacred Harp, a southern, shape-note tunebook, entered its 150th year of continuous use. First compiled in 1844 by B. F. White and E. J. King, and updated numerous times, The Sacred Harp books in the "Denson" tradition, including The Sacred Harp: 1991 Edition, are today the most popular and widely used twentieth-century revisions of any nineteenth-century tunebook. Sacred Harp singing has been a largely rural, Southern tradition and in the years between 1844 and the early 1970s several hundred separate singings were founded, many of which continue to be active. In the early 1990s the Sacred Harp …

A Hierarchical Approach To Equilibrium Cycle Nuclear Fuel Analysis., Jon Juneau Jan 1996

A Hierarchical Approach To Equilibrium Cycle Nuclear Fuel Analysis., Jon Juneau

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research involved developing an expert system that allows a nuclear fuel engineer to quickly provide answers to strategic nuclear fuel management questions, which are typically broad based. Current nuclear fuel analysis research concentrates on getting more accurate and precise answers at the expense of using large computer programs to get answers that are too specific to answer the broad based questions. The expert system brings together several artificial intelligence techniques to allow a nuclear fuel engineer to consider several scenarios in a general way in order to quickly answer the fuel management questions asked. The expert system is based …

School Social Climate And Individual Student Achievement In Rural High Schools., Leslie Faye Jones Jan 1996

School Social Climate And Individual Student Achievement In Rural High Schools., Leslie Faye Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the relationship of individual student achievement with four variables--school social climate, race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Each of these variables was expected to be significantly related to student achievement. Student achievement was measured by the LEAP sores (averages of mathematics, language arts, and writing components of the test). School social climate was measured by the Brookover (1969) school social climate questionnaire. Researchers have searched for years for an explanation of the differences in student achievement levels. The differences in student achievement levels were noted as early as the 1800's, and many studies have been done linking various …

Amorphization And Fracture In Silicon Selenium(2) Nanowires: Molecular-Dynamics Simulations On Parallel Computer Architectures., Wei Li Jan 1996

Amorphization And Fracture In Silicon Selenium(2) Nanowires: Molecular-Dynamics Simulations On Parallel Computer Architectures., Wei Li

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary goal of this dissertation is to investigate the structural and mechanical properties and dynamical fracture in SiSe$\sb2$ nanowires using the molecular-dynamics (MD) simulation technique. The present work is the first study of SiSe$\sb2$ nanowires. Large-scale simulations reported in this thesis are carried out with parallel multiresolution schemes for the long-range Coulomb and the three-body covalent potentials. The multiresolution scheme reduces the computational complexity from O(N$\sp2$) to O(N). Using an effective interatomic potential containing both 2- and 3-body interactions, MD simulations are performed for SiSe$\sb2$ nanowires composed of finite (1-64) number of chains. Under small uniaxial strain, the nanowires …
