The Effects Of Social Constraints On Peer Evaluation., Charlotte Mcinnis Curtis Jan 1996

The Effects Of Social Constraints On Peer Evaluation., Charlotte Mcinnis Curtis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Writers unable to improve their own work benefit when an outside reader suggests revision strategies, but what constraints shape the advice students give? This research presents a descriptive/naturalistic study of how students in one composition class viewed peer evaluation. The research explores how students' expectations of the procedure shape their comments and presents a system to code comments for revision/praise content. It considers nine editors' responses to the same essays. The Flower et al. three-part self-revision categories were modified and expanded to code editors' comments: those that referenced an essay's basic features ("thesis") were coded revision level (RL) 1; comments …

Xanthomonas Albilineans Detection, Identification And Infectivity Titration In Sugarcane., Silvio Aparecido Lopes Jan 1996

Xanthomonas Albilineans Detection, Identification And Infectivity Titration In Sugarcane., Silvio Aparecido Lopes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A PCR method with primers for t-RNA gene spacers was used for detection of Xanthomonas albilineans (Xa), the causal agent of leaf scald disease of sugarcane. A DNA segment of approximately 170 bp was amplified for Xa strains, but also for X. campestris pv. campestris, X. campestris pv. translucens and two sugarcane bacterial endophytes. Good agreement between PCR and isolation to detect Xa from sugarcane sap was observed. PCR was faster allowing pathogen detection in less than one day. Both methods resulted in low detection frequencies from asymptomatic plants, which may contain Xa below detection limits. The lowest limit for …

Le Temps Dans Les Oeuvres De Jorge Luis Borges, Edouard Glissant Et Saint-John Perse., Valerie Irene Loichot Jan 1996

Le Temps Dans Les Oeuvres De Jorge Luis Borges, Edouard Glissant Et Saint-John Perse., Valerie Irene Loichot

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation compares conceptions of time as they appear in the works of Jorge Luis Borges, Edouard Glissant and Saint-John Perse. It attempts to stage a series of encounters among these writers, encounters or "relatings" in the sense of correlation and narration. The first relation is that expressed by Paul Ricoeur, who states that time becomes human only when it is articulated in narration and narration becomes human only when it describes the features of temporal experience. The second relation, or set of relations, occurs in the plural, interrupted, yet interconnected topos of the Americas. Through an analysis of the …

"It Is Leviathan": Family, Feminism, And American Drama., Janet Vanderpool Haedicke Jan 1996

"It Is Leviathan": Family, Feminism, And American Drama., Janet Vanderpool Haedicke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

American drama has ever occupied a stepchild position in scholarship, its denigration rooted in the lure of domestic realism for even the most resistant of our playwrights. Maligned as solipsistic and regressive, this "leviathan" of mainstream American theatre putatively upholds through its content the unity of the mythologized family and through its form the closure of classical realism. Yet the legacy of this leviathan is an epistemological subversion and a transformative impulse. Those very plays which apotheosize American domestic realism ironically undermine its foundation in psychological causality, narrative linearity, transparent language, unmediated consciousness, and unified meaning. Destabilizing that objective reality …

Neighborhood Characteristics And Crime Specific Victimization Rates: A Sociological Analysis., Esther Celeste Jones Jan 1996

Neighborhood Characteristics And Crime Specific Victimization Rates: A Sociological Analysis., Esther Celeste Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the influence of ecological, institutional, and cultural variables on neighborhood victimization rates of assault, burglary, and robbery in 30 urban neighborhoods. Ordinary least square regression analysis is sued to determine which variables are most predictives of these rates. Based on social disorganization theory, social control theory, and subculture of violence theory, an integrated model is developed. The integrated model includes elements of all three theoretical orientations, clearly indicating that crime is not unidimensional, and that different variables are predictive of specific types of crime at the neighborhood level. It was found that assault and robbery were best …

American Literary Environmentalism, 1637-1872., David Mazel Jan 1996

American Literary Environmentalism, 1637-1872., David Mazel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The American environment is a mythic narrative that has served to mystify the social and economic relationships linking people and place. This study examines the early writing of the environment, from the 1637 Pequot War to the creation of the first national parks in the late nineteenth century. Chapter 1 draws on the work of Michel Foucault and Edward Said to theorize "literary environmentalism" as a knowledge-power formation that functions as a domestic Orientalism. Chapter 2 theorizes the narratological and psychosociological bases of environmental constructions generally before analyzing two colonial texts whose literary environmentalism is paradigmatic: John Underhill's Newes from …

Biological Control Of Pythiaceous Fungi Causing Death Of Longleaf Pine Seedlings During Cold Storage., Xiaoan Sun Jan 1996

Biological Control Of Pythiaceous Fungi Causing Death Of Longleaf Pine Seedlings During Cold Storage., Xiaoan Sun

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Pythium dimorphum Hendrix & Campbell and other Pythium species were determined to be pathogenic fungi that cause the death of longleaf pine seedlings during cold storage. Pathogenicity of these Pythium isolates as determined by infecting newly-germinated slash pine seedlings in vitro was confirmed in field evaluations. An in vitro dual culture screening system was effectively used for selecting Trichoderma isolates capable of killing P. dimorphum. Selected Trichoderma isolates and Gliocladium virens produced volatile and/or non-volatile antibiotics on solid media and in liquid cultures, but antibiotic production could be affected by medium type, pH, and culture age, depending on species or …

Variability Of Eddy Heat Fluxes Over The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico., Varis Ransibrahmanakul Jan 1996

Variability Of Eddy Heat Fluxes Over The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico., Varis Ransibrahmanakul

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Eddy heat flux variability over the Louisiana-Texas shelf was investigated using satellite-derived surface velocity and temperature data between October 1993 and October 1994. Assuming the product of sea water density and specific heat is relatively constant, velocity-temperature covariance reflects eddy heat flux (the fluctuating part of the 1 x 1 degree, 90 day mean heat flux). Available velocity and temperature fields, however, are not synchronous. Temperature "observations" at velocity positions were optimally estimated using the Gauss Markoff Theorem. The error-estimate is comparable to the error resulting from the application of the widely accepted SST correction algorithm. The trend that instantaneous …

Connecting Reading To Writing: At-Risk Readers' Comprehension Acquisition Via Discussion Groups With Active Readers., Jane Ann Medver Jan 1996

Connecting Reading To Writing: At-Risk Readers' Comprehension Acquisition Via Discussion Groups With Active Readers., Jane Ann Medver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore an alternative method of comprehension acquisition for at-risk readers. This study examined the following aspects of a classroom reading program as it pertained to the at-risk reader: (a) an overview of at-risk behaviors, (b) the reading/writing connection, (c) reading methods and philosophies, (d) grouping techniques, and (e) comprehension acquisition. The focus of the study was to investigate the actions of four at-risk readers as they interacted with active readers (peers) in flexible, heterogenous groups in order to discuss and comprehend text. By providing in-depth descriptions of the four at-risk readers, this study …

The Impact Of Total Sleep Deprivation On Neuropsychological Functioning., Paul Gale Binks Jan 1996

The Impact Of Total Sleep Deprivation On Neuropsychological Functioning., Paul Gale Binks

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Extended sleep deprivation has been shown to produce impairments in sustained attention and vigilance, especially if the deprivation period is greater than 48 hours. However little is known about the effects of sleep deprivation on performance of cognitive tasks considered to be measures of higher cortical functioning such as cognitive flexibility and the capacity to shift response set. These two activities are associated with intact functioning of the frontal lobes of the cerebral cortex while attention and vigilance tasks are not considered to be part of this type of cognitive activity and are not associated with frontal lobe function. One …

Micellar Electrokinetic Remediation Of Tnt From Soil., Mohd Raihan Taha Jan 1996

Micellar Electrokinetic Remediation Of Tnt From Soil., Mohd Raihan Taha

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An assessment of the feasibility of micellar electrokinetic (EK) remediation of TNT from soils is presented. Batch solubilization tests and bench scale EK tests were conducted to select the best candidate surfactant and to evaluate the efficiency of removal of TNT from a real world soil. From batch tests, it was found that SDS gave the best desorption results among a group of candidate surfactants, which includes DOWFAX 8390 (anionic), Tween 80 and Brij 35 (nonionic) and CTAB and CTAC (cationic). Unenhanced and surfactant enhanced EK tests was unable to move substantial amounts of TNT across the specimen to the …

Walker Percy's Return To The Feminine., John Patrick Zmirak Jr Jan 1996

Walker Percy's Return To The Feminine., John Patrick Zmirak Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

What has been lacking in the corpus of interpretation of Walker Percy's work is a synthesis of approaches, a reading of the novels that unites the philosophical, psychological, theological, and linguistic insights that have accrued over three decades of criticism, and applies them to the vexing question of sexuality within his novels. In the present work, Percy's four central, non-satiric novels, The Moviegoer, The Last Gentleman, Lancelot and The Second Coming, are analyzed in the light of the Christian allegorical tradition, which employs sexual categories to explicate the meta-physical order, and to inform sexuality with meaning. In each of Percy's …

The Generalized Kompaneets Equation., Kunyang Wang Jan 1996

The Generalized Kompaneets Equation., Kunyang Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the dissertation, the generalized Kompaneets equation$${\partial u\over\partial t}={1\over\beta(x)}\lbrack\alpha(x)(u\sb{x}+ku+F(x,u))\rbrack\sb{x}$$(for $x,t>0)$ is studied. For the linear case, when $F\equiv0,$ a complete theory is given. A brief discussion is carried for the nonlinear case when $F(x,u)=f(x)g(u).$. For the following equation,$$v\sb{t}=\varphi(y,v\sb{y})v\sb{yy}+\psi(y,v,v\sb{y}),$$Goldstein and Lin's result is extended to degenerate case. Also, for the following linear operator,$$Au=\alpha(x)u\prime\prime+\beta(x)u\prime$$(for $x\in \lbrack 0,$ 1)), Clement and Timmermans' result is extended to the case of discontinuous coefficients $\alpha$ and $\beta$.

Teacher Preferences For And Actual Use Of Service Delivery Options: A Study Of Possible Influential Variables., Angela Michelle Waguespack Jan 1996

Teacher Preferences For And Actual Use Of Service Delivery Options: A Study Of Possible Influential Variables., Angela Michelle Waguespack

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Variables influencing teacher preference for and actual use of two service delivery options, consultation and referral for evaluation, have previously been studied in isolation using varying methodologies. In this study, several variables including teacher attributions, organizational characteristics, child characteristics, and classroom behavior were studied in a comprehensive format. The relationship between these variables and teacher outcome expectancies, preference for services, and use of consultation versus referral was investigated. Sixty-seven teachers (grades K-8) seeking assistance for a student with behavior problems participated in the study. Teachers completed a demographic questionnaire, and measures of attributions, perceptions of problems, outcome expectancies, and preference …

Some Lifting Problems In Arithmetic Equivalence., Nancy C. Colwell Jan 1996

Some Lifting Problems In Arithmetic Equivalence., Nancy C. Colwell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main theorem in this dissertation provides a partial answer to the following question: Given a $\doubz\sb{p}$-extension $F{\sb\infty} /F$ and a finite extension $K/F$, where F is a number field and p a prime number, to what extent does the K-splitting behavior the prime ideals of F determine the Iwasawa invariants of the $\doubz\sb{p}$-extension $K{\cdot}F{\sb\infty}/K$. The answer is that if two fields K and L are arithmetically equivalent over F, then $K{\cdot}F{\sb\infty} /K$ and $L{\cdot}F{\sb\infty} /L$ have exactly the same Iwasawa invariants for any $\doubz\sb{p}$-extension $F{\sb\infty} /F$, so long as p is not an exceptional divisor for K and L …

The primary purpose of this study was to elicit perceptions of doctoral-student advisors regarding issues and processes associated with graduate dissertation research experiences in the schools of vocational education. A mailed survey was sent to teacher educators from the 21 member institutions of the University Council for Vocational Education (UCVE) who had served as chair to at least one doctoral committee. A researcher-designed instrument which used selected scales from other research was sent to the survey population. Statistical analyses were conducted on 144 completed surveys which represented a usable response rate of 76%. The completion rate among faculty's doctoral-student advisees …

An Attempt To Classify The Production And Regulation Of Cyclooxygenase-2 During Ovulation And Luteolysis., James Robert Broussard Jan 1996

An Attempt To Classify The Production And Regulation Of Cyclooxygenase-2 During Ovulation And Luteolysis., James Robert Broussard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A series of experiments were designed to determine the cyclooxygenase (COX) isoform responsible for prostaglandin release during ovulation and luteolysis. Initially, a reliable, serum-free culture system was developed to produce large numbers of bovine granulosa cells originally harvested from the small antral follicles of abattoir ovaries. This method allowed adequate numbers of cells to be obtained for the subsequent study involving cyclooxygenase regulation. In a second experiment, bovine granulosa cells from small antral follicles were isolated and cultured as in the first experiment for 6 days. Granulosa cells were then exposed to medium alone or medium containing arachidonic acid (10 …

Existence And Uniqueness Theorems For Some White Noise Integral Equations., Dongya Zou Jan 1996

Existence And Uniqueness Theorems For Some White Noise Integral Equations., Dongya Zou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Let $({\cal S})\sbsp{\beta}{*},0\le\beta<1,$ be the Kondratiev-Streit spaces of generalized functions. Let $f:\lbrack 0,T\rbrack\times ({\cal S})\sbsp{\beta}{*}\to ({\cal S})\sbsp{\beta}{*},$ be weakly measurable, and satisfy a growth condition and a Lipschitz condition. Let $\theta :\lbrack 0, T\rbrack\to ({\cal S})\sbsp{\beta}{*},$ be weakly measurable and satisfy a growth condition. Then it is shown that the white noise integral equation $X\sb{t}=\theta\sb{t}+\int\sbsp{0}{t}f(s, X\sb{s})ds,0\le t\le T,$ has a unique solution in $({\cal S})\sbsp{\beta}{*}$, where the integral is a white noise integral in the Pettis or Bochner sense. This result is extended to ${\cal M}\sp*$, the Meyer-Yan distribution space. Some special equations are also solved explicitly. For $F\in L\sp2({\bf R}\sp+)$, let $A\sb{s}=\int\sbsp{-\infty}{s} F(s-u)\partial\sb{u}du,\ E\sb{s}= {\rm exp}(A\sb{s}),$ and $A\sbsp{s}{*},\ E\sbsp{s}{*}$ be their duals, respectively. The equation $X\sb{t}=\theta\sb{t}+\int\sbsp{0}{t} A\sbsp{s}{*}X\sb{s}ds, t\in\lbrack 0,T\rbrack,$ is solved in $({\cal S})\sp*$ or $(L\sp2)$, and the equation $X\sb{t}=\theta\sb{t}+\int\sbsp{0}{t} E\sbsp{s}{*}X\sb{s}ds, t\in\lbrack 0, T\rbrack,$ is solved in ${\cal M}\sp*,$ where $\theta$ is as above. Moreover, under certain conditions on $\theta,\Phi:\lbrack 0,T\rbrack\to ({\cal S})\sp*$ and $\sigma:\lbrack 0,T\rbrack\sp2\to{\bf R},$ the Volterra equation $X\sb{t}=\theta\sb{t}+\int\sbsp{0}{t}\sigma(t,s)\Phi\sb{s}\ {\rm o}\ X\sb{s}ds, t\in\lbrack 0,T\rbrack,$ is also solved, and its solution is in ${\cal M}\sp*, ({\cal S})\sbsp{\beta}{*},$ or $(L\sp2),$ depending on the growth conditions for $\theta$ and $\Phi.$ Finally, for a suitable deterministic function f, the white noise partial differential equation ${\partial u\over\partial t}=\Delta u+:e\sp{\dot B\sb{x}}: {\rm o}\thinspace u, u(0,x)=f(x),x\in{\bf R}\sp{n}, t\in\lbrack 0,\infty),$ is solved in ${\cal M}\sp*$.

Applications Of Grobner Bases To Linear Codes., Jeanne Fitzgerald Jan 1996

Applications Of Grobner Bases To Linear Codes., Jeanne Fitzgerald

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Put $A={\bf F}\sb{q}\lbrack x\sb1,\...,x\sb{s}\rbrack,$ and let I be an ideal of A. Let $P\sb1,\...,P\sb{n}$ be all the ${\bf F}\sb{q}$-rational points of $V(I)$. Define a map $\varphi:A/I\to{\bf F}\sbsp{q}{n}$ by $\varphi(\tilde f)=(f(P\sb1),\...,f(P\sb{n})),$ where f is any preimage of $\tilde f$ under the canonical map from A to $A/I.$ Let $\{\tilde f\sb{i}\vert i\in {\bf N}\}$ be a basis of $A/I$ as an ${\bf F}\sb{q}$-vector space. Define the affine variety code C and its dual $C\sp\perp$ by$$C=\varphi(\langle\tilde f\sb1,\...,\tilde f\sb{m}\rangle);$$C$\sp\perp$ is the orthogonal complement of C with respect to the usual inner product in ${\bf F}\sbsp{q}{n}$. We show that any linear code can be expressed …

Nitrogen Accumulation By Rice., Arthur Bufogle Jr Jan 1996

Nitrogen Accumulation By Rice., Arthur Bufogle Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Consumption of rice is worldwide, and the rice-eating population is expanding rapidly. Breeding high yielding varieties has helped increase rice production. However, effective management practices have also been useful, and will probably become more vital as breeding efforts approach the genetic limits of the rice plant. Nitrogen (N) management is particularly important in reducing N losses and increasing grain yield. The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the amount of N accumulation by rice at different stages of plant development, (2) to determine if differences in N accumulation exist between rice varieties, and (3) to determine if differences …

Deaf Students In Mainstreamed College Composition Courses Culture And Pedagogy., Tonya Stremlau Johnson Jan 1996

Deaf Students In Mainstreamed College Composition Courses Culture And Pedagogy., Tonya Stremlau Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Composition theorists have already considered the effect of cultural constructs on writing students and have modified pedagogical practices to meet the needs of diverse students. However, disability has remained an almost invisible category in composition studies. This is unfortunate because our society has historically limited the access of the disabled into society, including the academy. Composition teachers need to understand deafness because poor English literacy skills are one culturally constructed attribute associated with hearing loss. The need is especially great now that legal and social developments are encouraging more deaf students to enroll in hearing majority colleges. Also, high-level literacy …

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Principal/Superintendent Relationship And The Organizational Climate Of The School: Do They Correlate?, Catherine Hall Glascock Jan 1996

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Principal/Superintendent Relationship And The Organizational Climate Of The School: Do They Correlate?, Catherine Hall Glascock

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This exploratory study examines teachers' perceptions of the principal/superintendent relationship in terms of hierarchical independence and influence, and whether those teachers' perceptions correlate with perceptions of the organizational climate of the school. A new instrument (TAI) was developed to measure the principal/superintendent relationship. After a literature review, panel of experts, and a principal intern class, a fourteen item instrument was used with the teachers. In order to hold some extraneous variables constant, only principals and superintendents who held office for at least three years were acceptable for the study. Factor analysis was conducted and the results indicate that while the …

The Effect Of Membrane Structure On Lipid Peroxidation And Its Inhibition., Tammy Renee Dugas Jan 1996

The Effect Of Membrane Structure On Lipid Peroxidation And Its Inhibition., Tammy Renee Dugas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Lipid peroxidation is the process by which lipids in the cell membrane undergo free radical-initiated oxidation. The resulting cell damage has been implicated in the onset of many diseases, including as cancer, aging, and stroke. Lipid oxidation has been studied in a variety of membrane models, including homogeneous solution, micelles, liposomes, and microsomes. The kinetics for free radical reactions proven to occur during lipid oxidation in homogeneous solution have been thoroughly elucidated. These kinetics were also shown to apply to oxidation in micelles. This dissertation presents evidence that the kinetics of more biologically realistic membrane models such as liposomes may …

The Study Of High Energy Heavy Nucleus Interactions In Nuclear Emulsion Chambers Using Digital Image Processing., Philip Vern Deines-Jones Jan 1996

The Study Of High Energy Heavy Nucleus Interactions In Nuclear Emulsion Chambers Using Digital Image Processing., Philip Vern Deines-Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nuclear emulsion chambers with lead targets have been exposed to a 158 GeV per nucleon beam of $\sp{208}$pb nuclei, by far the heaviest ion accelerated to such a high energy to date. These interactions frequently produce more than 1000 charged particles. In order to measure multiplicities and secondary particle trajectories in these extremely large events, an automatic CCD-based microscope system has been developed to analyze images, count secondary tracks, measure their trajectories, and estimate their charge. Based on the analysis of 40 high-multiplicity Pb-Pb events measured using this system, we assess the degree to which these interactions can be described …

Szasz-Muntz Theorems For Nilpotent Lie Groups., Darwyn C. Cook Jan 1996

Szasz-Muntz Theorems For Nilpotent Lie Groups., Darwyn C. Cook

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The classical Szasz-Muntz theorem says that for $f\ \in\ L\sp2(\lbrack 0, 1\rbrack )$ and $\{n\sb{k}\}\sbsp{k=1}{\infty}$ a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers,$$\int\limits\sbsp{0}{1}x\sp{n\sb{j}}f(x)dx=0\ \forall j\Rightarrow f=0\Leftrightarrow\sum\sbsp{j=1}{\infty}{{1}\over{n\sb{j}}}=\infty.$$We have generalized this theorem to compactly supported functions on $\Re\sp{n}$ and to an interesting class of nilpotent Lie groups. On $\Re\sp{n}$ we rephrased the condition above on an integral against a monomial as a condition on the derivative of the Fourier transform $\ f$. For compactly supported f this transform has an entire extension to complex n-space, and these derivatives are coefficients in a Taylor series expansion of $\ f$. In the nilpotent Lie groups …

Matroid Connectivity., John Leo Jan 1996

Matroid Connectivity., John Leo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation has three parts. The first part, Chapter 1, considers the coefficient $b\sb{ij}(M)$ of $x\sp{i}y\sp{j}$ in the Tutte polynomial of a connected matroid M. The main result characterizes, for each i and j, the minor-minimal such matroids for which $b\sb{ij}(M)>0.$ One consequence of this characterization is that $b\sb{11}(M)>0$ if and only if the two-wheel is a minor of M. Similar results are obtained for other values of i and j. These results imply that if M is simple and representable over $GF(q),$ then there are coefficients of its Tutte polynomial which count the flats of M that …

Homework Performance In Middle And High School Students: A Comparison Of The Effects Of Goal Setting With And Without Contingent Rewards., Alice L. Kahle Jan 1996

Homework Performance In Middle And High School Students: A Comparison Of The Effects Of Goal Setting With And Without Contingent Rewards., Alice L. Kahle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Participation in homework has important academic benefits for students. In addition, parents and teachers expect that completion of homework assignments will help students develop independent study skills. Unfortunately, homework problems are common and a significant number of middle school and high school students fail to complete many homework assignments. Goal setting is a procedure that has been applied to homework and targets academic productivity directly. In this study, the efficacy of a self-managed goal setting procedure for improving the homework performance of middle and high school students was evaluated. A combination multiple baseline and alternating treatments design was utilized to …

Medical Compliance In Hiv-Infected Patients: An Analysis Of Outpatient Clinic Attendance., Jennifer B. Mcclure Jan 1996

Medical Compliance In Hiv-Infected Patients: An Analysis Of Outpatient Clinic Attendance., Jennifer B. Mcclure

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Currently there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. The only way to deter progression of this disease is through regular prophylactic and curative treatment regimens. Thus, it is critical that patients are compliant with their outpatient medical appointments. Despite this, high rates of noncompliance have been reported among patients with HIV/AIDS. In addition, little attention has been directed toward establishing causal factors of this noncompliance. The present study represents one of the first efforts to elucidate psychosocial, illness, and demographic factors associated with compliance with outpatient, HIV-specific treatments. The results of this study indicate noncompliance with medical appointments is a significant …

Relationship Of Catecholamines And Glucocorticoids To Lymphoproliferation Of Equine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells., Lavanya Potla Jan 1996

Relationship Of Catecholamines And Glucocorticoids To Lymphoproliferation Of Equine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells., Lavanya Potla

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stress has been related to increased plasma epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), and glucocorticoids. These compounds produce immunomodulatory effects by interacting with hormone receptors on or in various immune cells. This project assessed the effects of stress on equine influenza virus (EIV)-specific and mitogen-induced lymphoproliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in relation to stress-induced changes in E, NE, and cortisol. In vitro effects of amines on proliferative responses and glucocorticoid receptor (GR) assays were done as a secondary measure of hormone and neurotransmitter interactions with the immune system. Time-dependent, saturable-specific hormone binding to GRs was abolished by heat treatment and …

On The Homology Of Branched Cyclic Covers Of Knots., Wayne H. Stevens Jan 1996

On The Homology Of Branched Cyclic Covers Of Knots., Wayne H. Stevens

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We consider the sequence of finite branched cyclic covers of $S\sp3$ branched along a tame knot $K : S\sp1\to S\sp3$ and prove several results about the homology of these manifolds. We show that the sequence of cyclic resultants of the Alexander polynomial of K satisfies a linear recursion formula with integral coefficients. This means that the orders of the first homology groups of the branched cyclic covers of K can be computed recursively. We further establish the existence of a recursion formula that generates sequences which contain the square roots of the orders of the odd-fold covers and that contain …
