Rigorous Solution Of The Quantum Einstein Equations, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Rigorous Solution Of The Quantum Einstein Equations, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We show that the second coefficient of the Conway knot polynomial is annihilated by the Hamiltonian constraint of canonically quantized general relativity in the loop representation. The calculations are carried out in a fully regularized lattice framework. Crucial to the calculation is the explicit form of the skein relations of the second coefficient, which relate it to the Gauss linking number. Contrary to the lengthy formal continuum calculation, the rigorous lattice version can be summarized in a few pictures. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
Analytic Approximations To The Spacetime Of A Critical Gravitational Collapse, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin
Analytic Approximations To The Spacetime Of A Critical Gravitational Collapse, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We present analytic expressions that approximate the behavior of the spacetime of a collapsing spherically symmetric scalar field in the critical regime first discovered by Choptuik. We find that the critical region of spacetime can usefully be divided into a "quiescent," an "oscillatory," and a moving "transition" region. We find that in the quiescent and oscillatory regions the critical solution can be well approximated by a flat spacetime scalar field solution. A qualitative nonlinear matching of the solutions across the transition region yields the right order of magnitude for the oscillations of the discretely self-similar critical solution found by Choptuik. …

Colliding Black Holes: How Far Can The Close Approximation Go?, Reinaldo J. Gleiser, Carlos O. Nicasio, Richard H. Price, Jorge Pullin

We study the head-on collision of two equal-mass momentarily stationary black holes, using black hole perturbation theory up to second order. Compared to first-order results, this significantly improves agreement with numerically computed wave forms and energy. Much more important, second-order results correctly indicate the range of validity of perturbation theory. This use of second-order corrections to provide “error bars” to the first-order results makes perturbation theory a viable tool for providing benchmarks for numerical relativity in more generic collisions and, in some range of collision parameters, for supplying wave form templates for gravitational wave detection. © 1996 The American Physical …
A Passive Vibration Isolation Stack For Ligo: Design, Modeling, And Testing, Joseph Giaime, Partha Saha, David Shoemaker, Lisa Sievers
A Passive Vibration Isolation Stack For Ligo: Design, Modeling, And Testing, Joseph Giaime, Partha Saha, David Shoemaker, Lisa Sievers
Faculty Publications
Multiple-stage seismic vibration isolation stacks, which consist of alternating layers of stiff masses and compliant springs, can provide significant passive filtering of. ground vibration for experiments and equipment that are sensitive to mechanical noise. We describe the design, modeling and testing of a prototype of a stack suitable for use in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). This is a four-stage elastomer (spring) and stainless steel (mass) stack, consisting of a table resting on three separate legs of three layers each. The viscoelastic properties of elastomer springs are exploited to damp the stack's normal modes while providing rapid roll-off of …
Some Effects Of 30 Years Of Weir-Management On Coastal Marsh Aquatic Vegetation And Implications To Waterfowl Management, John A. Nyman, Robert H. Chabreck
Some Effects Of 30 Years Of Weir-Management On Coastal Marsh Aquatic Vegetation And Implications To Waterfowl Management, John A. Nyman, Robert H. Chabreck
Faculty Publications
Aquatic vegetation was compared between weir-managed and unmanaged brackish marsh ponds at Marsh Island, Louisiana, parts of which have been weir-managed since 1958. Coverage by aquatic vegetation was greater in weir-managed ponds than in unmanaged ponds, but weir-management affected individual species differently. Eleocharis parvula was more common in unmanaged ponds than in managed ponds during the early 1960s but has not occurred in any ponds sampled since then. Ceratophyllum demersum and the dominant plants Myriophyllum spicatum and Ruppia maritima were more common in weir-managed ponds than in unmanaged ponds, although the magnitude of the difference varied greatly among sample dates. …
Genetic Variation Among Sweetpotatoes Propagated Through Nodal And Adventitious Sprouts, Arthur Q. Villordon, Don R. Labonte
Genetic Variation Among Sweetpotatoes Propagated Through Nodal And Adventitious Sprouts, Arthur Q. Villordon, Don R. Labonte
Faculty Publications
Genetic uniformity was assessed among sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas ) clones propagated through adventitious and nodal procedures. A single sprout each of 'Jewel.' 'Sumor,' and L87-95 was used as source of clonal plants that were simultaneously propagated through conventional adventitious procedures and a tissue culture-based nodal culture technique. A sample of 15 decamer primers generated 64 scorable amplified fragments in a PCR-based assay. 29 of which were putatively polymorphic across n = 60 samples ( 10 each of nodal and adventitiously derived plants/genotype). Within adventitiously derived materials, putative polymorphisms ranged from 4.7 <7r to>3U<£ depending on the genotypic class. In contrast, putative polymorphisms ranged from 0.0<£ to 3.1 **• among nodally derived samples. Marker loci differen-tiated genotypes as well as putative marker phenotype variants through a multidimensional scaling analysis of the genetic similarity matrix. An 'analysts of molecular variance' shows that genotypic effects accounted for 88.7°«• of the total molecular marker variability, w hue propagation effects ( within genotypic groups I accounted for 1U4T. Results confirm that clonal plants derived from preexisting meristematic regions arc more genetically uniform than plants propagated from adventitious origins.
In-Row Plant Spacing Affects Growth And Yield Of Pepperoncini Pepper, Carl E. Motsenbocker
In-Row Plant Spacing Affects Growth And Yield Of Pepperoncini Pepper, Carl E. Motsenbocker
Faculty Publications
Pepperoncini pepper (Capsicum annuum var. annuum L. 'Golden Greek') was grown at in-row spacings of 7.5, 15, 22.5, 30, and 45 cm to determine the effect of plant population on growth and fruit yield in a 2-year field study. In 1992, pepper plants grown at the 15-cm in-row spacing had the lowest plant, stem, and leaf dry weights, while plants at the lowest density (45-cm spacing) had the highest plant, leaf, and stem dry weights and the largest leaf area (LA). Of plants grown at the 7.5-cm spacing, the total yield and fruit count per hectare were higher than at …

Detachment Force And Fruit Characteristics Of Tabasco Pepper At Several Stages Of Development, Carl E. Motsenbocker
Faculty Publications
Field and greenhouse studies examined the fruit detachment force (FDF) and fruit and pedicel characteristics of two lines of tabasco pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) at several stages of maturity. The detachment force of red-mature 'McIlhenny Select' fruit at the calyx-fruit detachment area was lower than that of less mature fruit stages. The force required to detach red-mature Hard Pick (HP) tabasco fruit was higher than that of red-mature 'McIlhenny Select' fruit in the field and greenhouse. The fruit detachment force of red field-grown HP fruit was higher, and in the greenhouse was lower, than that of green or breaker fruit. …

Fermented Cowpea Flour: Production And Characterization Of Selected Physico-Chemical Properties, Witoon Prinyawiwatkul, Larry R. Beuchat, Kay H. Mcwatters, R. Dixon Phillips
Faculty Publications
A simplified solid-substrate fermentation and milling process for preparing flour from nondecorticated cowpeas (cv. White Acre) was developed. Yield of fermented flours compared to starting substrate was about 73%. Total solids loss (ca. 21-23%) was due to soaking (6%), boiling (11%), fermentation (2-4%) and grinding (2%). Moisture loss during drying was approximately 5%. The pH of fermented flours ranged from 6.4 to 6.9. Fermented flours had less packed density but greater unpacked density than the control flour. About 41-44% of flour particles passed through a 0.297-mm sieve; 65-72% of these particles were in the exclusion range of 0.037-0.074 mm. An …
Longitudinal Dispersion And Interstitial Velocity Relationship In Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands., Gianna M. Cothren
Longitudinal Dispersion And Interstitial Velocity Relationship In Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands., Gianna M. Cothren
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Treatment of municipal and rural wastewater using subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SFCW's) is growing in popularity. These systems often consist of an excavated cell containing 2-3 in. rock with the wastewater level maintained below the media surface. A SFCW is a natural form of wastewater treatment which removes organics and nutrients based on the attached growth of microorganisms on crushed rocks where biological reactions take place. The currently accepted design procedure is based on the first order plug flow model, although tracer studies have shown that flow conditions are not well represented by the plug flow condition. This design rationale …
Individual-Level Determinants Of Employee Shirking, Timothy A. Judge, Timothy D. Chandler
Individual-Level Determinants Of Employee Shirking, Timothy A. Judge, Timothy D. Chandler
Faculty Publications
Employee shirking, where workers give less than full effort on the job, has typically been investigated as a construct subject to organization-level influences. Neglected are individual differences that could explain why employees in the same organization or work-group might shirk. Using a sample of workers from the health care profession in the United States, the present study sought to address these limitations by investigating subjective well-being (a dispositional construct), job satisfaction, as well as other individual-level determinants of shirking. Results indicate that whites shirk significantly more than nonwhites, and that subjective well-being, job satisfaction, and age have significant, negative effects …
Spatial Distribution And Sequential Sampling Of The Rice Water Weevil, Lissorhoptrus Oryzophilus Kuschel, In Louisiana., Mark Alan Muegge
Spatial Distribution And Sequential Sampling Of The Rice Water Weevil, Lissorhoptrus Oryzophilus Kuschel, In Louisiana., Mark Alan Muegge
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies were conducted in Louisiana to determine the spatial and temporal distribution of rice water weevil (RWW), Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, adults, eggs, larvae and pupae in drill-seeded rice. In addition, three sequential sampling plans, Kuno's fixed precision sequential sampling plan, the sequential probability ratio test (SPRT), and 2-SPRT, were developed and evaluated to establish an accurate and economically efficient sampling plan for RWW larvae in drill-seeded rice in Louisiana. Values obtained for the aggregation indices, b, from Taylor's power law, $\beta$, from Iwao's patchiness regression and, k, from the negative binomial distribution indicated that RWW larvae were nearly randomly distributed …

Effects Of Organic Waste Amendments, Herbicides, And Weed Hosts On Pythium Root Rot Of Sugarcane., Nimal Mudiyans Dissanayake
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three objectives that could lead to improved understanding and management of Pythium root rot of sugarcane were addressed. First, the potential of amending soil with different organic wastes to suppress root rot was evaluated, and the biological and chemical properties of wastes that may contribute to disease suppression were identified. Secondly, herbicide interactions with root rot affecting sugarcane growth were assessed. Finally, the role of weeds in disease epidemiology was investigated. Greenhouse and laboratory studies indicated soil amendment with some organic wastes offers a sustainable disease management option through biological control. Amendment with different wastes had variable effects. Sewage sludge, …
Crystal Plasticity Model With Back Stress Evolution., Wei Huang
Crystal Plasticity Model With Back Stress Evolution., Wei Huang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this work, two backstress models and a modified yield criterion for crystalline materials are proposed. The proposed work is for the identification of texture development in metals when subjected to large deformation processes such as rolling, extrusion, stamping and deep drawing, etc. These models are incorporated into a numerical procedure similar to the approaches by Asaro (1983), Peirce et al. (1983), Nemat-Nasser (1983), and Rashid and Nemat-Nasser (1992). Also, similar to their approaches, a two-dimensional crystal structure is used for a feasibility study of the model by solving a simple shear problem. More importantly, the proposed formulations are strain …

Magneto-Optical Properties Of Cubic Ferromagnetic Metals., Neeraj Arvind Mainkar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I present a first principles, all electron, linear combination of Gaussian orbitals calculation of a comprehensive collection of magneto-optical properties of the cubic ferromagnetic metals nickel, iron and cobalt based on density functional theory. Among the many magneto-optical effects, this is the first ab initio study of the equatorial Kerr effect for absorption in the optical as well as the X-ray region, where it is called the X-ray magnetic linear dichroism. I find that in the optical region, this effect is of the order of 2% while in the X-ray region, it is of the order of 1% for the …

Transactional Interactions And Growth In The Global Economy: A Multiple-Network Analysis., Kuo-Hua Chen
Transactional Interactions And Growth In The Global Economy: A Multiple-Network Analysis., Kuo-Hua Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation postulates that the trend of increasing globalization of economic activities within the shifting features of the world economy has been the dominating force transforming and integrating the international economic structure. I adopt ecological theory's external view of system structure, and focus on a more relational view of international exchange. Using network methodology, I analyze the effects of global transactional interactions on economic growth. This research extends concepts of the macro-urban approach to an analysis of international transactions. Based on data for 93 nations over a 20-year period (1970-1978 and 1978-1990) from three transactional networks (93 x 93 matrices), …
Elizabeth Bishop's Poetic Personae: The Dark And The Bright., Joan Louise Fields
Elizabeth Bishop's Poetic Personae: The Dark And The Bright., Joan Louise Fields
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The intrigue of Elizabeth Bishop's poetic texts lies in the design of her sonic elements, vocalized by her dramatic personae as she directs her play of words. She manages a cohesion among her concept or content, the phonemic nature of her chosen words, and the rhythmic phrasing of her lines. Her poetic texts convey an enigmatic, yet natural, tonal quality that is produced by the juxtaposition of opposite strains or "strands" of voice--one shadowed, darker; the other light, brighter. These strands include the voice of a little girl as well as mature male and female speakers. Beneath, yet interwoven with …
Interaction Between Ap-1 Proteins And Glucocorticoid Receptors In Regulation Of Lymphokine Activated Killer (Lak) Cell Activity In The Equine Species., Jing Bu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This project was performed in order to determine whether exercise-induced increases in plasma cortisol concentrations may be responsible for enhanced lymphokine activated killer (LAK) cell activity. Secondly, this project included preliminary experments which were designed to test the hypothesis that stimulatory effects of cortisol on LAK cell activity may be due to cross-talk between signalling systems important to glucocorticoid effects and stimuli which act through nuclear activator protein-1 (AP-1). Blood samples were collected from resting horses in order to determine whether the animals had normal plasma glucocorticoid concentrations. All horses included in these experiments had $10\sp{-7}$ to $10\sp{-8}$M cortisol concentrations …
