Impact Of The Soft-Shell Clam Mya Arenaria On Sulfate Reduction In An Intertidal Sediment, Kim Hansen, Gary M. King, Erik Kristensen
Faculty Publications
Sulfate reduction and various parameters related to the sulfur cycle were examined at mm to cm scales around burrows of the soft-shell clam Mya arenaria in an intertidal sediment (Lowes Cove, Maine, USA). Sulfate reduction rates were 1.5 to 2 times higher in the inner 1 to 5 mm region surrounding the burrow than in ambient sediment In contrast, pools of reduced sulfur increased with the distance from the burrow wall to values ≈1.5 times higher in ambient sediment. The highest numbers of sulfate-reducing bacteria (estimated using a most-probable-number technique) and microbial biomass (estimated from phospholipid phosphorous content) relative to …

Urea Production And Turnover Following The Addition Of Amp, Cmp, Rna And A Protein Mixture To A Marine Sediment, Mette S. Therkildsen, Gary M. King, Bente Aa Lomstein
Faculty Publications
The potential of adenosine 5′-monophosphate (AMP), cytidine 5′-monophosphate (CMP), 16S ribosomal RNA, and a protein (bovine serum albumin) to serve as substrates for bacterial urea production was evaluated in a defaunated, anoxic marine sediment. AMP, CMP and RNA stimulated urea production and urea turnover, but CMP to a lesser degree than AMP and RNA. The increase in urea production and turnover rates took place immediately after AMP, CMP, and RNA were added to the sediment. The rapid response in urea production and turnover rates suggests that the necessary uptake mechanisms and enzymes to utilize the substrates were present constitutively. Addition …

Evaluting The Impact Of Agricultural Exports On The Louisiana Economy (Bulletin #852), David W. Hughes, Roman I. Bairak
LSU AgCenter Bulletins
A revised hybrid IMPLAN model of the Louisiana economy, based on its structure in 1985, was used to estimate the impact of agricultural exports on the state economy. This publication includes the results of the model, which should be useful to state policy makers and others concerned about the ability of foreign markets to generate economic activity in Louisiana.
A Palynological Study Of Swamp Sediments At The Poverty Point Archaeological Site, Northeastern Louisiana, Karen Thomas
A Palynological Study Of Swamp Sediments At The Poverty Point Archaeological Site, Northeastern Louisiana, Karen Thomas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Poverty Point site, characterized by elaborate earthworks, was occupied from about 1500 B.C. to 500 B.C. (Webb 1982). The site was the central node for a large manufacturing network at the end of the late Archaic Period. Questions of subsistence and the demise of the culture remain unanswered. This thesis employs a palynological study of a swamp in the Poverty Point archaeological site (16WC5), northeastern Louisiana. Eight cores were taken from a swamp immediately adjacent to the mounds at the site. Loss-on-ignition was done for four cores. Two cores, cores PP5 and PP7 were used for pollen analysis; core …
Solution Conformation Of De Novo Antimicrobial Peptides, Maryam Javadpour
Solution Conformation Of De Novo Antimicrobial Peptides, Maryam Javadpour
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
De novo antimicrobial peptides were designed to help study the necessary conformational properties of biologically active peptides. One set of peptides are: (KLAKKLA)n, (KLAKLAK)n, (n=l, 2, 3), (KALKALK)3, (KLGKKLG)n, and (KAAKKAA)n (n=2,3), while the second set have phenylalanine substituted for leucine, (KFAKFAK)3 and (KFAKKFA)n, (n=3,4). These peptides were designed. to be perfectly amphipathic in helical conformations.
Circular dichroism was used to study their secondary structure in aqueous solution, sodium dodecylsulfate micelles, and phospholipid vesicles. Peptide antibacterial activity was tested against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and S. aureus. Peptide cytotoxicity was tested against a mammalian cell line, 3T3 mouse fibroblasts. Our …

DNA sequences of neutral nuclear autosomal loci, compared across diverse human populations, provide a previously untapped perspective into the mode and tempo of the emergence of modern humans and a critical comparison with published clonally inherited mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome measurements of human diversity. We obtained over 55 kilobases of sequence from three autosomal loci encompassing Alu repeats for representatives of diverse human populations as well as orthologous sequences for other hominoid species at one of these loci. Nucleotide diversity was exceedingly low. Most individuals and populations were identical. Only a single nucleotide difference distinguished presumed ancestral alleles from …

Acute Depression Of Mitochondrial Protein Synthesis During Anoxia: Contributions Of Oxygen Sensing, Matrix Acidification, And Redox State, Kurt E. Kwast, Steven C. Hand
Faculty Publications
Mitochondrial protein synthesis is acutely depressed during anoxia-induced quiescence in embryos of Artemia franciscana. Oxygen deprivation is accompanied in vivo by a dramatic drop in extramitochondrial pH, and both of these alterations strongly inhibit protein synthesis in isolated mitochondria. Here we show that the oxygen dependence is not explained simply by blockage of the electron transport chain or by the increased redox state. Whereas oxygen deprivation substantially depressed protein synthesis within 5 min and resulted in a 77% reduction after 1 h, aerobic incubations with saturating concentrations of cyanide or antimycin A had little effect during the first 20 min …

We present a study of tunable high-order sum and difference frequency mixing in the 7-70 eV range, in xenon, argon and neon. We mix the light from a terawatt, sub-picosecond titanium-sapphire laser and that from a tunable optical parametric generator. The radiation generated through mixing processes involves absorption or emission of one or two photons from the weak tunable source. The relative strengths of the sum and difference frequency processes depend strongly on the wavelength range of the generated radiation. The sum frequency processes are stronger at low photon energies in xenon, whereas the difference frequency processes dominated at high …

Objectives. This study sought to examine the relation between body height and incidence of myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease, overall mortality and mortality from cardiovascular disease. Background. An association betweeen short stature and increased risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular disease has been observed in several studies, attracting considerable attention. Methods. We used data from the First National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1) Epidemiologic Follow-Up Study, a prospective study of a large random sample of the U.S. population. to examine the association between height and risk of four end points. Results. Baseline data were collected from 1971 to …
On Tree-Partitions Of Graphs, Guoli Ding, Bogdan Oporowski
On Tree-Partitions Of Graphs, Guoli Ding, Bogdan Oporowski
Faculty Publications
A graph G admits a tree-partition of width k if its vertex set can be partitioned into sets of size at most k so that the graph obtained by identifying the vertices in each set of the partition, and then deleting loops and parallel edges, is a forest. In the paper, we characterize the classes of graphs (finite and infinite) of bounded tree-partition-width in terms of excluded topological minors.

Photoproduction events which have two or more jets have been studied in the Wγp range 135 GeV < Wγp < 280 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A class of events is observed with little hadronic activity between the jets. The jets are separated by pseudorapidity intervals (Δη) of up to four units and have transverse energies greater than 6 GeV. A gap is defined as the absence between the jets of particles with transverse energy greater than 300 MeV. The fraction of events containing a gap is measured as a function of Δη. It decreases exponentially as expected for processes in which colour is exchanged between the jets, up to a value of Δη ∼ 3, then reaches a constant value of about 0.1. The excess above the exponential fall-off can be interpreted as evidence for hard diffractive scattering via a strongly interacting colour singlet object.

Towards A Loop Representation For Quantum Canonical Supergravity, Daniel Armand-Ugon, Rodolfo Gambini, Octavio Obregón, Jorge Pullin
Faculty Publications
We study several aspects of the canonical quantization of supergravity in terms of the Ashtekar variables. We cast the theory in terms of a GSU (2) connection and we introduce a loop representation. The solution space is similar to the loop representation of ordinary gravity, the main difference being the form of the Mandelstam identities. Physical states are in general given by knot invariants that are compatible with the GSU/(2) Mandelstam identities. There is an explicit solution to all the quantum constraint equations connected with the Chern-Simons form, which coincides exactly with the Dubrovnik version of the Kauffman polynomial. This …
