Beliefs And Practices Of Middle School Language Arts Teachers., Suzan Anderson
Beliefs And Practices Of Middle School Language Arts Teachers., Suzan Anderson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the instructional beliefs and practices of middle school language arts teachers as they relate to developmental appropriate/inappropriate instruction. Developmentally appropriate instruction is defined as matching the curricula to the level of children's emerging mental abilities. If the learner is seen as a growing individual with developing abilities, then the aim of education should be to facilitate this development. This in turn means that the curricula must be studied and analyzed to determine that level of mental ability that is required to comprehend curriculum materials (Elkind, 1970). There is some concern that what …
Three Essays On The Term Structure Of Eurocurrency Rates., Cetin Ciner
Three Essays On The Term Structure Of Eurocurrency Rates., Cetin Ciner
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation investigates the term structure relationship in financial markets by using Eurocurrency rates of several countries. The first essay tests the restrictions of the expectations hypothesis of term structure and the Fisher hypothesis in an interrelated fashion to characterize the changes in the slope and the level of Eurocurrency yield curves of numerous countries. It is argued that the Fisher relation explains the level of the yield curve and the expectations hypothesis determines the long run relationship between yields at different maturities at that level. Special emphasis is given to the information content of the yield curve for future …
An Historical Analysis Of Elementary-Level Art Education Supported By The Puerto Rican Department Of Public Instruction From 1898-1990., Camille Galanes
An Historical Analysis Of Elementary-Level Art Education Supported By The Puerto Rican Department Of Public Instruction From 1898-1990., Camille Galanes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Visual Arts Education Division of the Puerto Rican Department of Education is currently developing a plan for educational reform. One intent of this plan is to secure art programs within the core of curriculum reform. In my dissertation I establish the imperative need of historical research as the first step in so securing art programs. Without historical research, educational reforms could result in an idealization of purposes with uncritical adherence to tradition. Art education requires an analysis of its development on the island rather than a mere listing of the most prominent events. My study, the first of its …

This dissertation examines the rise of the Republican Party in the South from 1948 to 1996. The South includes all the states of the Confederacy minus Virginia. This dissertation subdivides the South into nine geopolitical regions at the county/parish level and then examines the regional contributions to the rise of the Republican Party. The nine geopolitical regions are The Deep South, The Piedmont Up-Country, The Mountain South, The Ozarks, South Florida, French Louisiana, East Texas, West Texas, and Mexican Texas. The dissertation first tests for spatial autocorrelation in the South and the nine geopolitical regions. The South has two eras …
Reference Price Effects: The Role Of Multiple Internal Reference Prices And Semantic Cues., Balaji Chandrasekaran Krishnan
Reference Price Effects: The Role Of Multiple Internal Reference Prices And Semantic Cues., Balaji Chandrasekaran Krishnan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this dissertation is two fold. The first objective is to assess the effect of price promotion on consumers' evaluation of the value of the deal independent of the specific IRP used by consumers. Towards this end, a subjective measure called "perceived fairness of the offer price" is introduced in a model hypothesizing relations among transaction utility, acquisition utility, and perceived value of the deal. The proposed model was compared to an existing model designed to predict and explain perceived value of the deal using a survey-based methodology, in the first study. Results indicate that the proposed model …
Considering Outcomes Beyond Achievement: Student Participation As An Indicator Of High School Performance., Susan Elizabeth Kochan-Teddlie
Considering Outcomes Beyond Achievement: Student Participation As An Indicator Of High School Performance., Susan Elizabeth Kochan-Teddlie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is the product of a three-phase exploratory study that utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods in order to develop and test a composite indicator of high school performance that measures the degree to which high schools strike a balance between the press for academic excellence and the need to sustain all students--even the most marginal--on to high school completion. In Phase I, undaunted and relative performance indicators (UPIs and RPIs) of student achievement and participation were calculated for a statewide sample of 308 schools whose grade configurations included grades 9-12. The achievement scores were composites of student performance …
Service Recovery's Influence On Complainant Attitudes And Intentions: A Perceived Justice Framework., James G. Maxham Iii
Service Recovery's Influence On Complainant Attitudes And Intentions: A Perceived Justice Framework., James G. Maxham Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I conducted two field studies (one in the banking industry, n = 692, and one in the new home industry, n = 339) that examined service recovery's influence on complainant perceptions of perceived justice (i.e., distributive, procedural, and interactional justice), satisfaction (i.e., transaction-specific satisfaction and overall firm satisfaction), and intentions (i.e., word-of-mouth intent and purchase intent). The studies assessed these perceptions over multiple time periods (i.e., post failure, post service recovery, and two weeks subsequent to service recovery) to better capture the perceptions as they form over time. The dissertation uses an equity theory framework in a service recovery context, …
Rapid Assessment Of The Bacteriological Quality Of Milk By The Use Of Adenosine Triphosphate Bioluminescence., Pushpa John Samkutty
Rapid Assessment Of The Bacteriological Quality Of Milk By The Use Of Adenosine Triphosphate Bioluminescence., Pushpa John Samkutty
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Raw milk samples (n = 246) and pasteurized milk samples (n = 104) were analyzed to determine adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and compared with the standard plate count (SPC). An ATP filtration method was used to filter milk samples prior to ATP determination, which was measured in relative light units (RLU). The ATP assay took approximately 7 minutes to complete and could allow rapid prediction of SPC which is a measure of raw milk quality. Linear regression analysis was performed on data from three raw milk treatments defined as; fresh milk samples, samples preliminarily incubated at 12.8 and 15.6$\sp\circ$C for 18 …
The New South Gubernatorial Campaigns Of 1970 And The Changing Politics Of Race., Donald Randy Sanders
The New South Gubernatorial Campaigns Of 1970 And The Changing Politics Of Race., Donald Randy Sanders
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In 1970 four young racially moderate Democrats won the governor's chairs of Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina and Georgia. These southern gubernatorial elections and the subsequent inaugural speeches signaled a transformation of racial politics in the region. As the campaigns began, however, persistent ambivalence concerning the pace of integration and court-ordered busing of school children to achieve racial balances tempted many politicians to exploit these concerns. Their efforts failed; southerners had decided to obey the law. The successful candidates understood that the electorate had come to this decision with varying degrees of enthusiasm and that their campaigns must reflect this ambivalence; …
Diagnosis Of Poor Pdc Bit Performance In Deep Shales., John Rogers Smith
Diagnosis Of Poor Pdc Bit Performance In Deep Shales., John Rogers Smith
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was performed to diagnose the cause of poor PDC bit performance in deep, overpressured shales. Deep, overpressured wells account for a disproportionate share of all drilling costs, about 27 percent. The effect of bit performance on this cost is significant, about $2.9 billion annually in overpressured formations alone. Bit performance in deep, overpressured formations when using water-based muds is especially poor, adding at least \$500 million annually to worldwide drilling costs. This problem is described as the slow drilling shale problem and is shown to exist worldwide. Potential causes of this problem identified in the technical literature include …
Education For Liberation As (An) African-American Folk Theory., Denise Marie Taliaferro
Education For Liberation As (An) African-American Folk Theory., Denise Marie Taliaferro
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
African American people have historically expressed great faith in education as a path toward liberation. It is an idea--education for liberation--that is pervasive in African American discourse. It is well documented in research that focuses on the efforts of African Americans to educate themselves despite slavery, the fall of reconstruction, a brutal Jim Crow system, and desegregation in lieu of integration (Anderson, 1988; Lerner, 1972; Watkins, 1993). Yet despite our faithful proclamations, we have been represented otherwise in mainstream educational discourse. Intellectual inferiority, cultural deprivation, underachievement, and at-risk have been some of the terms used to explain the consistent and …

Angus (A), Brahman (B), Charolais (C), and Hereford (H) breeds were used in the F$\sb1$ and rotational phases, while Gelbvieh (G) and Simmental (S) were the terminal sire breeds. The traits studied were birth weight (BWT), preweaning gain (ADG), 205 d weight (WWT), and weaning height (WHT). Least squares analysis of variance procedures were used for comparisons of mating systems for all traits. Estimates of direct and maternal additive (Ig, …
The Solo Piano Music Of Violet Archer: A Study Of Selected Didactic Works., Angela Sue Willoughby
The Solo Piano Music Of Violet Archer: A Study Of Selected Didactic Works., Angela Sue Willoughby
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Canadian composer Violet Archer has made contributions to virtually every genre of musical composition. Her avid interest in orchestral music manifests itself in the large number of instrumental works she has composed, and her love of setting poetry and scripture can be seen in her music for voice and chorus. The works for solo piano span the entire length of her career and represent a significant portion of her total output. Aside from a scant number of brief analytical sketches of various pieces in periodicals and biographical sections of books, there is no comprehensive study of Archer's music for piano. …
Magnetic Field Evolution In Neutron Stars., Erik Jordan Young
Magnetic Field Evolution In Neutron Stars., Erik Jordan Young
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Magnetized neutron stars provide the basic model for radio pulsars. They also play a fundamental role in the theory of pulsating X-ray sources and explaining the origin of millisecond radio pulsars. In an effort to better understand these interesting and fundamentally important astrophysical systems, this dissertation studies the magnetic evolution of neutron stars with a dipole field supported in the crust. We explore their evolution both as isolated systems and as accreting objects in binary systems. We investigate how the incorporation of the gravitational field of the neutron star core into the spacetime occupied by a dipole field in the …
Origins Of Black Catholic Parishes In The Archdiocese Of New Orleans, 1718-1920., John Bernard Alberts
Origins Of Black Catholic Parishes In The Archdiocese Of New Orleans, 1718-1920., John Bernard Alberts
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
During the early eighteenth century, Capuchin missionaries as well as Ursuline nuns built and maintained churches and schools for all people in south Louisiana, no matter their race or social status. Under French and Spanish colonial rule, black Catholics supported all efforts towards interracial worship. After 1803, the diocese's inclusive practices continued. By 1861 proselytization of large numbers of free people of color and slaves resulted in Catholic congregations with roughly equal numbers of blacks and whites. When parishes were officially created in 1861, they had an integrated membership. Interracial parishes survived the traumas of the Civil War and persisted …
A Methodology To Identify Stranded Generation Facilities And Estimate Stranded Costs For Louisiana's Electric Utility Industry., Robert Frank Cope Iii
A Methodology To Identify Stranded Generation Facilities And Estimate Stranded Costs For Louisiana's Electric Utility Industry., Robert Frank Cope Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The electric utility industry in the United States is currently experiencing a new and different type of growing pain. It is the pain of having to restructure itself into a competitive business. Many industry experts are trying to explain how the nation as a whole, as well as individual states, will implement restructuring and handle its numerous "transition problems.". One significant transition problem for federal and state regulators rests with determining a utility's stranded costs. Stranded generation facilities are assets which would be uneconomic in a competitive environment or costs for assets whose regulated book value is greater than market …

The management of multi-echelon inventory systems has been both an important and challenging research area for many years. The rapid advance in information technology and the emphasis on integrated supply chain management have new implications for the successful operation of distribution systems. This research focuses on the study of some fundamental issues related to the operation of a multilocation inventory system with centralized information. First, we do a comparative analysis to evaluate the overall performance of individual versus centralized ordering policies for a multi-store distribution system where centralized information is available. This study integrates the existing research and clarifies one …
The Role Of Curved Dna In Bacillus Subtilis Rna Polymerase-Promoter Interactions., Murad Mohammed Odeh
The Role Of Curved Dna In Bacillus Subtilis Rna Polymerase-Promoter Interactions., Murad Mohammed Odeh
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Intrinsically curved DNA upstream of promoters was shown to affect the Bacillus subtilis RNA polymerase-promoter interactions leading to transcription initiation. The Alu156, a B. subtilis bacteriophage dependent on the curved DNA located immediately upstream of the $-$35 region, and modified forms of Alu156 were used. Promoters were examined using gel retardation and DNase I footprinting assays. DNase I footprinting analysis of the Alu156 promoter demonstrated a unique pattern of DNase I hypersensitive and protected sites characteristic of DNA wrapped around the protein. This wrapping was observed upstream of the curved DNA. To examine the nature of curved DNA, the native …
Cloning And Identification Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Genes And Proteins Upregulated Under Low Carbon Dioxide Conditions., Aravind Somanchi
Cloning And Identification Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Genes And Proteins Upregulated Under Low Carbon Dioxide Conditions., Aravind Somanchi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A mechanism that concentrates CO$\sb2$ in cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, is induced when cells are grown at low CO$\sb2$ conditions. This mechanism increases the CO$\sb2$ concentration at the site of RuBisCO, and thereby improves the efficiency of C$\rm\sb{i}$ uptake and fixation. Cells adapting to low CO$\sb2$ show significant physiological changes. Few of the genes encoding proteins needed to produce these changes have been identified. A cDNA library has been constructed from C. reinhardtii to identify genes involved in these changes. The cloning and identification of several cDNAs that are upregulated under low CO$\sb2$ conditions are reported here. The possible roles …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mechanisms for the formation of a foreland basin at the beginning of continental collision (Pliocene-Recent Australian continental foreland along the Banda orogen) and a post-orogenic, continental, Miocene extensional basin (Alboran Sea) are studied. Such a study investigates the controls on the basin formation during the start of the Wilson cycle and later during the break up of a thickened continent in a collisional environment. Effective Elastic Thickness (EET) of the Australian continental lithosphere from Roti to the Kai Plateau (${\sim}121\sp\circ{-}137\sp\circ$E longitude) are estimated using an elastic-half beam model to match the sea floor bathymetry and the Bouguer gravity anomalies. Range …
Development Of A New Methodology For Particle Transport Calculations Utilizing Pointwise-Continuous Nuclear Data., Mehdi Asgari
Development Of A New Methodology For Particle Transport Calculations Utilizing Pointwise-Continuous Nuclear Data., Mehdi Asgari
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to develop a new method to compute a continuous-energy representation of the neutron flux spectrum using the one-dimensional discrete ordinates method. The technique provides a rigorous calculational tool for applications that require a detailed description of the fine-structure variation in the space-dependent neutron energy spectrum over some energy ranges. This technique uses the combination of multigroup (MG) and rigorous pointwise (PW) solutions to the steady state Boltzmann transport equation in the calculations. Also utilized in this methodology are two new methods called "sub-moment" expansion and "cumulative integral" operator to accurately evaluate the Legendre moments …

Dynamics And Management Of Insecticide Resistance In The Horn Fly, Haematobia Irritans Irritans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae)., Antonio Thadeu Medeiros De Barros
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies on resistance of the horn fly, Haematobia irritans irritans (L.), to insecticides were conducted in Louisiana from 1989 to 1998. These studies included monitoring resistance and resistance dynamics under different strategies of insecticide use, monitoring the efficacy of insecticide products, establishing a relationship between bioassay findings and product efficacy, and evaluation of a new insecticide class. In four years (1989--1992), efficacy of 20% diazinon-impregnated car tags used yearly was reduced from greater than twenty to just one week of control, and tag failure was observed with resistance ratios (RR) from 1.8 to 5.7. Diazinon resistance developed more slowly and …
Directed Search In K-System Reconstruction., Christopher W. Branton
Directed Search In K-System Reconstruction., Christopher W. Branton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
K-systems analysis is a factor analysis technique created through the generalization of key reconstructability analysis definitions and algorithms. The method is applied to functions on systems of discrete variables to discover a set of factors which can explain the bulk of the function's variation from the mean. K-systems analysis uses principles of information theory to reveal interactions which are often masked by the assumptions implicit in traditional methods. The method has been used successfully to analyze systems in several disciplines. Despite the success of k-systems analysis, obstacles to the creation of a mature methodology still exist. Some issues and open …

An Exploratory Study Of The Impact Of Hypermedia-Based Approach And Science-In-Fiction Approach For Instruction On The Polymerase Chain Reaction., Lynda A. Britton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Exploration of meaningful learning of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed instruction by a researcher-developed hypermedia computer program that incorporated human constructivist principles and a "science-in-fiction" chapter of a novel that described PCR. Human constructivism is the Ausubel-Novak-Gowin (1997) meaningful learning theory that supports science learning through graphic representations and multiple examples. Science-in-fiction is a new genre of fiction introduced by the prominent scientist, Carl Djerassi, to engender an appreciation for science, and its ethical dilemmas. Chapter 19 of Djerassi's 1994 novel, The Bourbaki Gambit, was placed into hypermedia format to standardize the presentation. As part of a clinical microbiology …

Nanostructure Modeling In Oxide Ceramics Using Large Scale Parallel Molecular Dynamics Simulations., Timothy J. Campbell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the properties and processes in nanostructured oxide ceramics using molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. These simulations are based on realistic interatomic potentials and require scalable and portable multiresolution algorithms implemented on parallel computers. The dynamics of oxidation of aluminum nanoclusters is studied with a MD scheme that can simultaneously treat metallic and oxide systems. Dynamic charge transfer between anions and cations which gives rise to a compute-intensive Coulomb interaction, is treated by the O(N) Fast Multipole Method. Structural and dynamical correlations and local stresses reveal significant charge transfer and stress variations which cause rapid …
Purification Of Porphobilinogen Deaminase And The Sequencing And Expression Of Thehemc Gene Of Rhodobacter Capsulatus., Keith A. Canada
Purification Of Porphobilinogen Deaminase And The Sequencing And Expression Of Thehemc Gene Of Rhodobacter Capsulatus., Keith A. Canada
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rhodobacter capsulatus uses the common tetrapyrrole pathway to synthesize heme, bacteriochlorophyll, siroheme and vitamin B-12. As part of our studies on the regulation of this pathway, the product of the hemC gene, porphobilinogen deaminase was purified approximately 200-fold. The molecular weight, isoelectric point, pH optimum and Km of the enzyme were all similar to other porphobilinogen deaminases. The stoichiometry of the enzyme was found not to be the expected four porphobilinogens used per one uroporphyrin formed. Rather a 9:1 ratio was typically seen. Further study of this atypical ratio uncovered evidence of possible in vivo regulation of porphobilinogen deaminase dependant …
An Examination Of Automatic Versus Strategic Semantic Priming Effects In Broca's Aphasia., Janice Feagin Del Toro
An Examination Of Automatic Versus Strategic Semantic Priming Effects In Broca's Aphasia., Janice Feagin Del Toro
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The ability to recognize words is frequently investigated using a lexical decision (LD) priming task in which subjects make rapid yes/no judgements as to whether visually presented letter strings (targets) are words or not. A well established finding is that words are recognized faster when preceded by related words. This "semantic priming effect" is believed to represent both automatic and conscious, strategic driven processes. One factor that influences the degree to which subjects recognize words automatically or consciously, is the time interval between the presentation of the prime and the presentation of the target. This is referred to as the …
