The Impact Of Specialist And Multiple Dealer Market Structures On Intraday Price Formation And Bid-Ask Spread Components., David Michael Michayluk
The Impact Of Specialist And Multiple Dealer Market Structures On Intraday Price Formation And Bid-Ask Spread Components., David Michael Michayluk
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation investigates specialist and multiple dealer markets. In the first of four essays, simultaneous trading in two market structures on the Paris Bourse is used to evaluate intraday price formation. Specialists are found to exacerbate the end of day price rise. Stock volatility and bid-ask spreads are found to be larger when a specialist is present, in contrast to existing literature that compares market structures on different exchanges. The second essay estimates the components of the bid-ask spread and trade execution costs on the Paris Bourse. Estimates of the adverse selection cost component do not resolve the conflicting findings …
Vertebrate Paleontology And Magnetostratigraphy Of The Upper Aguja Formation (Late Campanian), Talley Mountain Area, Big Bend National Park, Texas., Julia Tippins Sankey
Vertebrate Paleontology And Magnetostratigraphy Of The Upper Aguja Formation (Late Campanian), Talley Mountain Area, Big Bend National Park, Texas., Julia Tippins Sankey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Considerable north-south latitudinal diversification existed among vertebrate faunas along the Western Interior Seaway during the late Campanian; this has caused difficulty correlating isolated faunas, especially southern ones, which contained endemic taxa and often lack non-paleontologic age control. The Talley Mt. local fauna is a late Campanian vertebrate fauna from the upper Aguja Formation, Big Bend National Park, Texas. It is one of the southernmost late Campanian vertebrate faunas, and is one of the few associated with magnetostratigraphy. The fauna is from five channel deposits, spanning 20 meters of section, from the lower portion of the upper shale member of the …
Photoionization Studies Of Intramolecular Dynamics: A Closer Look., Chuanyong Wu
Photoionization Studies Of Intramolecular Dynamics: A Closer Look., Chuanyong Wu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Using synchrotron radiation as an excitation source, dispersed fluorescence measurements of two different molecular systems are presented in this dissertation with the intention to study the two fundamental aspects of shape resonances-complexity and completeness. $\rm C\sb6F\sb6$ is a relative large and complex molecule in the sense that nonradiative transitions can take place unimolecularly in the free species. The elucidation of the ionization dynamics of this molecule helps to bridge the gap from simple molecules to matter in condensed phases. In the $\rm 2a\sb{2u}\sp{-1}$ photoionization study of $\rm C\sb6F\sb6,$ the non-Franck-Condon behavior of the vibrational distributions at around 20 eV indicates …
Development And Assessment Of A Property Rights-Based Measure Of State Regulatory Climate., Ferdinand Francis Wirth Iii
Development And Assessment Of A Property Rights-Based Measure Of State Regulatory Climate., Ferdinand Francis Wirth Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
States implement many of the environmental laws enacted during the last thirty years. A key policy issue is the effect of differences in state institutions and environmental policies on the location of livestock agriculture. There is widespread belief that the stringency of state environmental regulations, known as regulatory climate, is an important factor influencing the location, growth and expansion decisions of livestock agriculture. Existing regulatory climate measures are not tailored to agriculture, and their use has given mixed results. Conceptual and empirical models were developed for the U.S. aquaculture industry, based on elements of public choice and firm location theories …
Wavelet-Based Registration Of Medical Images., Raj Sharman
Wavelet-Based Registration Of Medical Images., Raj Sharman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Registration is the process of spatially aligning two objects and is normally a preprocessing step in most object recognition algorithms. Registration of images and recognition of signatures of objects in images is important for clinical and diagnostic purposes in medicine. Recognizing structure, potential targets for defense purposes and changes in the terrain, from aerial surveillance images and SAR images is the focus of extensive research and development today. Automatic Target Recognition is becoming increasingly important as the defense systems and armament technology move to use smarter munitions. Registration of images is a preprocessing step in any kind of machine vision …
Winter Season Cold Front Variability In The Southern United States., Jeffrey W. Hardy
Winter Season Cold Front Variability In The Southern United States., Jeffrey W. Hardy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The variability of southern United States cold fronts was examined for 29 winter seasons, with particular emphasis placed on the identification of the upper-air circulation patterns associated with months when the region experienced extremes in cold front frequencies and intensities. The influence of atmospheric teleconnection patterns on cold front variability was first examined. For the Pacific/North American (PNA) teleconnection pattern, cold front passage frequencies in Florida were found to be significantly higher (lower) during meridional (zonal) months. An examination of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) revealed that cold front passage frequencies were significantly higher (lower) in western and eastern Texas …
The Behavior Of Invert Sugar In Sugar Refining., Jianmei Yu
The Behavior Of Invert Sugar In Sugar Refining., Jianmei Yu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Alkaline degradation of pure invert and invert in refining materials including washed sugar liquor, melt liquor and affination syrup has been investigated. The pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics of invert alkaline degradation was demonstrated for a pH range of 9.0-11.0 and a temperature range of 70-90$\sp\circ$C. In this range, rate constants of invert degradation increased 5 to 6 times with one unit increase in pH. The effects of pH and temperature on rate constants were quantified and could be expressed as: log k = 19.42 - 6712/T - 0.712pOH. Rate constants of invert alkaline degradation at different pH-temperature-base combinations calculated by this …
Down Upon The Fold: Mercenaries In The Twelfth Century., Steven Wayne Isaac
Down Upon The Fold: Mercenaries In The Twelfth Century., Steven Wayne Isaac
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Despite the trend in recent medieval historiography which has accepted the presence of paid warriors as no longer an aberration, the role of the mercenary within and outside twelfth-century society has still escaped in-depth analysis. Such an approach, however, has the dual merit of building an understanding of the mercenary phenomenon itself and of highlighting the often overlooked social and cultural relations, structures, and breakdowns that produce men willing to fight for profit. The period 1187-1218 provides one of the earliest, richest backgrounds against which to examine the mercenary. The accelerating return of a money economy, hardening of feudal structures, …
Arthur Miller In Montreal: Cultural Transfer Of American Plays In Quebec (1965-1997)., Bernard Lavoie
Arthur Miller In Montreal: Cultural Transfer Of American Plays In Quebec (1965-1997)., Bernard Lavoie
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the 1960s, American plays presented in Montreal were translated in France; the following decade saw the first of American plays translated or adapted in Quebec. In the 1980s, the translative practices employed in the seventies proved the dominant mode. In the 1990s, only exceptionally has an American play been presented in a translation originating outside of Quebec. It is now the rule that all foreign plays produced in Quebec are translated in the Quebecois idiom. This translative situation has stabilized, and the translation of American plays into Quebecois reflects an established practice. The tracing and analysis of this translative …
United States Foreign Policy And Media Coverage Of Uzbekistan: A Case Study., Mardon Nigmatovich Yakubov
United States Foreign Policy And Media Coverage Of Uzbekistan: A Case Study., Mardon Nigmatovich Yakubov
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study reviews the impact of U.S. political interests on media coverage of Uzbekistan, a Central Asian republic which became independent after the breakup of the Soviet Union. A content analysis of coverage from 1991 to 1996 in the New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times was compared to American government documents and pronouncements on Uzbekistan. Striking similarities between U.S. policy towards Uzbekistan and the negative interpretation of events appearing in American newspapers were found. The democracy and human rights agendas advanced by U.S. officials apparently prompted editors and reporters to focus more on these subjects, while overlooking …
Aspects Of Searching And Tunneling Behavior In Resource Utilization By The Formosan Subterranean Termite, Coptotermes Formosanus Shiraki., Justin Carl Hedlund
Aspects Of Searching And Tunneling Behavior In Resource Utilization By The Formosan Subterranean Termite, Coptotermes Formosanus Shiraki., Justin Carl Hedlund
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Formosan subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), were acclimated with different masses of pine or no wood (control) and then allowed access to a thin sand filled tunneling chamber. As available pine increased, termite survival and food consumption increased but search tunnel volume decreased. Increased food size resulted in termites excavating fewer exploratory tunnels due to decreases in secondary and tertiary branch tunnels. An increase in food size also decreased the total length of a search tunnel network, due to decreases in primary and secondary branch order lengths. Search tunnel networks had proportionally more length devoted to primary tunnels …
Reproductive Isolation Between Two Species Of Topminnow, Fundulus Olivaceus And F. Euryzonus., Thomas Allen Blanchard
Reproductive Isolation Between Two Species Of Topminnow, Fundulus Olivaceus And F. Euryzonus., Thomas Allen Blanchard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Fundulus olivaceus and F. euryzonus are sister species that commonly occur syntopically in the Amite and Tangipahoa River drainages in Louisiana and Mississippi. Although the habitats of the two species are quite similar, and the timing of their reproductive activity overlaps extensively, no natural hybrids between them have been documented. I examined physiological, as well as behavioral, factors that could potentially serve as effective isolating mechanisms between them. The courtship and spawning behaviors of the two species were relatively generalized and showed a number of similarities. Under forced mating conditions in which females were allowed to associate with heterospecific males …
Urban Effects On Precipitation In The Southern United States Of America., Youngeun Choi
Urban Effects On Precipitation In The Southern United States Of America., Youngeun Choi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Of the many weather conditions influenced by urban areas, precipitation is one of the most controversial and unsolved elements in characterizing the urban climate. The purpose of this dissertation was to identify anomalies in precipitation totals and frequencies due to urban effects and to evaluate whether certain meteorological conditions or seasons have more apparent effects. The five largest cities in the south-central United States were selected: Houston; Dallas; San Antonio; New Orleans; and Memphis. It was assumed that simple spatial analysis can detect urban effects on precipitation over and downwind of the city with a localized maximum. Trend surface analysis …
Characterization And Utilization Of Flavors From Undersized Crawfish., Feng Chen
Characterization And Utilization Of Flavors From Undersized Crawfish., Feng Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Undersized processed crawfish are proposed to be a resource for effective recovery of crawfish flavors. Tail puree from undersized crawfish was hydrolyzed using protease APL-440 through response surface methodology to enrich flavor production. Optimal hydrolytic conditions were determined to be pH $8{\sim}9,\ 65\sp\circ$C, 0.3% (V/W) enzyme/substrate ratio with the reaction maintained at 33.3% puree concentration over 60 min period. Effects of storage time and extraction method on the crawfish flavor profile were evaluated. Shorter storage time gave superior flavor stocks with less oxidized flavors. The shelf-life of frozen crawfish puree was at least six months. Atmospheric simultaneous distillation-solvent extraction (A-SDE) …
Intraspecific Variation In Three Marsh Grasses In Response To Increased Flooding And Salinity., Jeannine Marie Lessmann
Intraspecific Variation In Three Marsh Grasses In Response To Increased Flooding And Salinity., Jeannine Marie Lessmann
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Intraspecific variation in response to moderate levels of flooding and salinity stress was identified in Spartina patens, S. alterniflora, and Panicum hemitomon. This analysis enabled genotypes of each species to be selected for desired traits to enhance their function in restored systems, such as increased belowground biomass to stabilize soil substrates or increased aboveground biomass to enhance sedimentation. It was also determined that increased flood tolerance conferred a greater advantage for plant growth at moderate stress levels than did increased salt tolerance. However, this growth advantage was overridden by high salinity stress, and was greatly reduced by excessive flooding stress. …

Pest Status Of The Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera Frugiperda (J. E. Smith), On Conventional And Transgenic Cotton Expressing The Bacillus Thuringiensis Cryia (C) Delta-Endotoxin: Development, Survival, And Host-Strain Influence., John Joseph Adamczyk Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The pest status of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), including development and survival on conventional and transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton and host-strain influences, was examined in laboratory and field studies. Neonates (1st instars) were fed leaves from conventional (cv. DP 5415 and cv. DP 5690) and transgenic Bt (cv. NuCOTN 33$\rm\sp{B}$ and cv. NuCOTN 35$\rm\sp{B})$ cotton. There were no significant differences $(P>0.05)$ between cultivars in larval mortality and survival to the pupal and adult stages. However, times to pupation and adult eclosion were significantly longer $(P<0.05)$ for larvae fed transgenic Bt cotton compared to conventional cotton. In addition, larvae weighed significantly less $(P<0.05)$ when fed transgenic Bt cotton compared to conventional cotton. A study was conducted to determine when cotton bolls become tolerant to fall armyworm injury. Fifth instars were caged individually on bolls of various ages from conventional (cv. DP 5415) and transgenic Bt (cv. NuCOTN 33$\rm\sp{B})$ cotton to define the period of boll susceptibility to larval injury. For DP 5415 bolls, there was no significant linear relationship $(P>0.05)$ describing larval mortality or successful boll penetration as …0.05)$>
Pliocene And Pleistocene Marine Ostracoda Of The Limon Basin, Costa Rica: A Record Of Paleoenvironmental Change., Pamela Frances Borne
Pliocene And Pleistocene Marine Ostracoda Of The Limon Basin, Costa Rica: A Record Of Paleoenvironmental Change., Pamela Frances Borne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Late Pliocene (3.8-3.6 Ma) and early Pleistocene (1.5-0.9 Ma) marine ostracodes of the Rio Banano, Quebrada Chocolate and Moin Formations (Limon Group) provide a detailed paleoenvironmental record for the Limon Basin, Costa Rica. The marine ostracode assemblages recovered from the Limon region do not provide evidence that the tropics cooled dramatically during the late Pliocene when the Northern Hemisphere was entering the Modern Ice Age. Paleoenvironmental interpretations are based on cluster analyses and a modern tropical ostracode analog analysis. Diverse ostracode assemblages of the middle Pliocene Rio Banano Formation are dominated by genera typical of the inner to middle neritic …
The Effects Of Fiscal Structure, Leviathan, And Interdependent Demands On Local Public Spending Behavior., Rebecca J. Campbell
The Effects Of Fiscal Structure, Leviathan, And Interdependent Demands On Local Public Spending Behavior., Rebecca J. Campbell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Understanding the fiscal behavior of subnational governments is increasingly important as fiscal responsibilities are devolved. In order to get a clearer picture of subnational government behavior, we employ a median voter model and local government data to perform tests of the fragmentation, decentralization, fiscal illusion, and overlapping jurisdictions hypotheses. A key theoretical result is that estimating horizontal effects of the leviathan and fiscal illusion models without accounting for the interdependent demands for the services of overlapping jurisdictions will result in upwardly biased estimates. We find that controlling for the overlapping jurisdictions relationship is important. This dissertation estimates each model using …
An Analytical Approach To A Tree-Farm Wetland Study., Robert Cunninghame Davidge
An Analytical Approach To A Tree-Farm Wetland Study., Robert Cunninghame Davidge
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Wetland delineation is important because federal and local government regulations limit permissible uses of wetlands. Federal delineation regulations are based upon the use of a manual jointly agreed upon by EPA, USACOE, and NRCS. The manual provides for classification of land as either wetland or non-wetland based upon the 3 criteria of soil, vegetation, and hydrology. No provision is made for gradation between categorical wetland and categorical non-wetland. Controversy has sometimes developed between landowners and environmentalists as to proper wetland classification; some delineations have been considered arbitrary. The analytical method of wetland appraisal provides a means of assigning continuous numerical …
A Knowledge-Based System For Reliability-Centered Maintenance In The Chemical Industry., Daniel Jesus Fonseca
A Knowledge-Based System For Reliability-Centered Maintenance In The Chemical Industry., Daniel Jesus Fonseca
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
An innovative new framework for the implementation of reliability centered maintenance (RCM) in industrial settings was developed and implemented during this study. Fuzzy reasoning algorithms were designed to evaluate and assess the likelihood of equipment failure mode precipitation and aggravation. Furthermore, an alternative to the traditional RCM decision tree for prioritizing equipment failure modes was defined through the development of an approximate reasoning scheme. This priority scheme not only takes into account the relevancy of failure modes on local and product effects, but also their possibility of occurrence, as well as associated negative consequences on adjacent machinery. The new RCM …
Analysis Of Taper-Taper Adhesive-Bonded Joints In Composite Plates Under Tension And Cylindrical Bending., Jack Elwin Helms Jr
Analysis Of Taper-Taper Adhesive-Bonded Joints In Composite Plates Under Tension And Cylindrical Bending., Jack Elwin Helms Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A taper-taper adhesive-bonded joint between two composite plates has been analyzed under tension and cylindrical bending. Two tension models were derived. The first model was based on mechanics of materials and the second model used laminated plate theory and shear correction factors. For the mechanics of materials model the condition of plane strain was assumed for the adherends and adhesive. Average stresses were used in the adherends and point-wise stresses were used in the adhesive. The model derived consisted of four second-order ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. The adherends were characterized by the extensional Young's modulus. The equations were …
Localization And Biochemical Characterization Of The Cell Division Protein Ftsa In Escherichia Coli., Anand Immaneni
Localization And Biochemical Characterization Of The Cell Division Protein Ftsa In Escherichia Coli., Anand Immaneni
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cell division protein, FtsA, is an inner membrane protein with a putative ATP binding motif. Although FtsA has been studied genetically, it has not been characterized biochemically. Immunoelectron microscopy with FtsA polyclonal antibodies permitted FtsA to be within the cell. Since native FtsA is present in low amounts, the cellular level of this protein was increased by induction of ftsA from an overexpression plasmid before processing the cells for immunogold labelling. The immunogold particles localized FtsA to the inner cytoplasmic membrane. Immunogold labelling of cells overproducing C-terminal deleted FtsA, displayed the gold particles throughout the cytoplasm. This suggested that the …
A Universal Parametrization In B-Spline Curve And Surface Interpolation And Its Performance Evaluation., Choong-Gyoo Lim
A Universal Parametrization In B-Spline Curve And Surface Interpolation And Its Performance Evaluation., Choong-Gyoo Lim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The choice of a proper parametrization method is critical in curve and surface fitting using parametric B-splines. Conventional parametrization methods do not work well partly because they are based only on the geometric properties of given data points such as the distances between consecutive data points and the angles between consecutive line segments. The resulting interpolation curves don't look natural and they are often not affine invariant. The conventional parametrization methods don't work well for odd orders k. If a data point is altered, the effect is not limited locally at all with these methods. The localness property with respect …
A Case For Procedural Justice Climate: Development And Test Of A Multilevel Model., Stefanie Elizabeth Naumann
A Case For Procedural Justice Climate: Development And Test Of A Multilevel Model., Stefanie Elizabeth Naumann
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Current conceptualizations of procedural justice focus largely on individual perceptions; no framework exists for examining procedural justice's social context. This dissertation presents a model that identifies contextual factors contributing to procedural justice climate and, in turn, a variety of work-related attitudes and behaviors associated with procedural justice climate. In general, empirical tests on data collected from 220 employees of two banks offered support for the model. Employee perceptions of leader member exchange, organizational support, and supervisor monitoring were positively associated with individual procedural justice perceptions. Work group perceptions of cohesion and supervisor visibility in demonstrating procedural justice were associated with …
Student Loan Procurement: Exploring Its Linkages To Leadership, Diligence, And Post-Collegiate Behaviors., Thresa Arnita Nelson-Brown
Student Loan Procurement: Exploring Its Linkages To Leadership, Diligence, And Post-Collegiate Behaviors., Thresa Arnita Nelson-Brown
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
With 50% of college attendees leaving college with student loan debt and the default rate of these loans dropping substantially, it may be time to turn our attention away from repayer-defaulter comparisons to look at loaner-non-loaner comparisons. This study addressed the research gaps in the student loans literature by linking leadership, diligence, and post-collegiate behaviors to loan procurement. Respondents in this study (n = 692) were examined and survey data was collected using abstracted versions of the Posner and Brodsky (1992) Leadership Practice Inventory, the Bernard (1991) Diligence Inventory, and an original demographic questionnaire. Leadership competencies, diligence competencies, post-collegiate behaviors, …
Physical And Chemical Properties Of Fibers Extracted From Sugarcane And Kenaf Rind., Simona Cristina Romanoschi
Physical And Chemical Properties Of Fibers Extracted From Sugarcane And Kenaf Rind., Simona Cristina Romanoschi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sugar cane fibers were extracted from the rind of cane stalks with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions of different concentrations, at atmospheric pressure, followed by a steam explosion. The extraction process was optimized using a central rotatable composite design, to study the influence of three reaction parameters (alkaline concentration, time of reaction and frequency of tumbling) on fiber bundle properties (weight, length, and tex). Tex was the objective function, with length as a constraint. Regression analysis indicated a quadratic polynomial response. Bleaching studies were conducted on sugar cane fibers extracted with 1.0N NaOH and on kenaf fibers mechanically processed only. Hydrogen …
An Analysis Of Reimbursement Methodologies And Cost Containment Policies In Medicaid Inpatient Hospital And Pharmaceuticals., Etienne Elmer Pracht
An Analysis Of Reimbursement Methodologies And Cost Containment Policies In Medicaid Inpatient Hospital And Pharmaceuticals., Etienne Elmer Pracht
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation consists of three essays. The first essay provides an analysis of the interaction between special interest groups, public interest factors, median voters' tastes and preferences regarding the provision of medical services for the poor, and cost containment policies on one side, and drug reimbursement levels, the size of state Medicaid programs, and the size of states' drug budgets on the other. The relative strengths of special interest are shown to be one of the most important determinants of drug reimbursement levels and drug expenditures. The median voters' preferences significantly explain the size of states' Medicaid programs. The results …

Experimental And Theoretical Study Of Dynamic Water Control In Oil Wells., Ephim I. Shirman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A dynamic water control, dubbed Downhole Water Sink (DWS) technology, is a well completion technique for production of hydrocarbons from reservoirs with bottom aquifer causing water coning. Typically, a DWS well is dually completed with top completion designated mostly for hydrocarbon production and bottom completion used for water drainage and coning control. Positions and flow rates of the completions are the DWS performance parameters to be determined by a process designer. This dissertation presents a theoretical and experimental study of DWS performance for various reservoir conditions and production schedules. A new mathematical model, developed in this work calculates steady state …

John Jacob Niles's Settings Of The Early Poetry Of Thomas Merton In "The Niles-Merton Songs", Opp. 171 And 172., Melanie Boney Williams
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
John Jacob Niles (1892-1980) is renowned as a composer and performer of music in the folk style of his native Appalachia. However, his body of work also includes forays into opera, oratorio, symphony, and art song. In fact, Niles's final compositional endeavor was the setting of twenty-two poems by the poet and Trappist monk Thomas Merton (1915-1968), who resided at Our Lady of Gethsemani Monastery in Kentucky. The Niles-Merton Songs, Opp. 171-172 were composed between 1967 and 1970. This study focuses on text-music relations in seven settings of poems from Merton's first two poetry publications, Thirty Poems (1944) and A …
