Nmr Relaxation Studies Of Cements Used In Waste Disposal And Solid-State Deuterium Nmr Study Of The Molecular Motion In Rhodium Olefin Complexes., Greta Lynn Garner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes two studies that involve the use of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. The first is an analysis of the pore size distribution of Portland cements used in solidification/stabilization techniques for hazardous waste disposal and the second is an investigation of the solid state molecular motion of ethene ligands rhodium complexes. Cements play an important role in waste disposal. Low level wastes made of sludges, solids, liquids, and contaminated laboratory equipment are mixed with cements and buried in landfills. This method seems ideal, however major problems occur when materials containing toxic, heavy metals mixed with some organics …

A Transformational Reengineering System That Supports Software Maintenance Using A Graph Representation For The Identification Of An Object-Oriented Software Architecture., Ramachenga Reddy Valasareddi Jan 1999

A Transformational Reengineering System That Supports Software Maintenance Using A Graph Representation For The Identification Of An Object-Oriented Software Architecture., Ramachenga Reddy Valasareddi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The process of maintenance and enhancement of legacy software systems is a laborious and unavoidable task. Often these systems lack structure or modularity, as they were developed using programming languages and paradigms that do not incorporate object-oriented features and sound design principles. The software engineer's task can be simplified if tools are available to identify object like features in the code. These tools can help transform the non-object-oriented code to object oriented code. This research describes a comprehensive and systematic process for transformational reengineering of legacy systems. Research in reengineering is mainly focused on clustering techniques that group procedures present …

Production Of L-(+) Lactic Acid From Blackstrap Molasses By Lactobacillus Casei Subspecies Rhamnosus Atcc 11443., Narumol Thongwai

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Lactobacillus casei subspecies rhamnosus grew on non-supplemented blackstrap molasses. The bacteria grew best at the optimal temperature of 40 +/- 2°C, and at pH 5.5. Addition of yeast extract to molasses shortened the lag phase and increased cell mass. In batch fermentations without pH control, the highest ratio of lactic acid produced to cell mass was 12 from non-supplemented molasses. For pH controlled batch fermentations, the ratio's of lactic acid produced/cell mass were 81, 79, 51 and 31 for 0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8% yeast extract supplementation, respectively. Non-supplemented molasses, 8% Brix, produced 28 +/- 2 g/l of lactic acid …

Development Of Immunochemical Methods For Gossypol Analysis., Xi Wang Jan 1999

Development Of Immunochemical Methods For Gossypol Analysis., Xi Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Gossypol is a reactive polyphenolic compound present in the cotton plant. During cottonseed processing, gossypol can react with other compounds to form bound gossypol. Gossypol analyses using chemical methods do not always agree with its bioavailability to animal possibly because of various bound forms of gossypol with different stabilities in vivo and the (+/-)-gossypol enantiomers with different biological activities. The objectives of this research were to produce anti-gossypol antibodies and use antibodies to study gossypol chemistry and to analyze gossypol in cottonseed samples and cottonseed by-products. Polyclonal antibodies were produced from rabbits after they were immunized with gossypol-LPH (Limulus polyphemus …

Tennessee Williams And New Orleans: Rewriting The Playwright, Rewriting The City., Mark D. Zelinsky

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Vieux Carre (1978), Suddenly Last Summer (1958), and A Streetcar Named Desire (1947) are among the many Tennessee Williams' plays and short stories that take New Orleans as their setting; they demonstrate how the city offered an appropriate and complex metaphor to explore his themes. This study centers on Tennessee Williams and New Orleans and explores how the two are linked in a mutually advantageous relationship, how the city informed his work, how his works reflect/re-create the city, and how the combination has passed into popular culture. This work examines the themes and images prevalent in Williams, work that also …

Tourism And Place In Treasure Beach, Jamaica: Imagining Paradise And The Alternative., Michael J. Hawkins Jan 1999

Tourism And Place In Treasure Beach, Jamaica: Imagining Paradise And The Alternative., Michael J. Hawkins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The tourism production system has been generating images of the Jamaican landscape and culture since the mid-nineteenth century. This system consists of those individuals and corporate entities who produce and market the product itself, including travel writers, airlines, advertising agencies, hotel owners and government agencies; and the people, their culture, and elements of the landscape which are commodified as tourist attractions. The tourist gaze has traditionally focused on an idealized Caribbean landscape. Because of a shift in Western patterns of consumption, the focus of the gaze has shifted to emphasize the culture and people who inhabit the landscape. As the …

Isolation Of Antimutagenic Compounds In Corn And Cottonseed., Henry Njapau Jan 1999

Isolation Of Antimutagenic Compounds In Corn And Cottonseed., Henry Njapau

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Food, which ensures the sustenance of life, has also been implicated in the development or prevention of numerous diseases including cancer. Cancer may be a result of hereditary factors or genomic instability induced by DNA damage, from the intrinsic chemistry of cells or extrinsic factors like aflatoxin B1. Aflatoxin B1, produced by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, is a common contaminant of corn and cottonseed and a proven mutagen and animal carcinogen. Increased scientific knowledge and establishment of regulation have reduced but not eliminated exposure to aflatoxin B1. Complete elimination may be uneconomical for producers and may deprive consumers of …

All carcasses were subjected to high voltage electrical stimulation during slaughter. After a 24 hr …

"A Perfect War": Politics And Parties In Louisiana, 1824--1861., John Michael Sacher Jan 1999

"A Perfect War": Politics And Parties In Louisiana, 1824--1861., John Michael Sacher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

My dissertation explores Louisiana's political development from 1824 to 1861. Many antebellum state studies have been written, but none focus specifically on Louisiana. While sharing the rest of the South's commitment to slavery and cotton, Louisiana possessed atypical attributes including: a unique ethnic composition, a sugar cane crop dependent upon a protective tariff, and the presence of New Orleans, the South's foremost commercial city. Louisiana's antebellum political situation resulted from the interaction of these distinctive traits with the characteristics that Louisiana shared in common with the rest of the United States. The primary focus of this political narrative is the …

Rhetorical Theory: Discourse Practices Of Utopian Communities., Irvin Andreu Wilhite Jan 1999

Rhetorical Theory: Discourse Practices Of Utopian Communities., Irvin Andreu Wilhite

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study is interested in idealized expressions of political ideology in utopian science fiction literature written during the Cold War following World War II. Accordingly, a dramatistic analysis is presented regarding fourteen science fiction novels published between 1949 and 1959 which describes their thematic content with respect to consonant and contrasting moral/social/political positions and the influx of advancing technology. A description of the canonical works precedes this analysis. Subsequently, contemporary related studies are lightly analyzed for comparative and contextual considerations. Conclusions address the importance of rhetoric and performance in restoring the destabilized balance of power as an aftermath of violent …

Organizing The *South: Railroads, Plantations, And War., Steven Gedson Collins Jan 1999

Organizing The *South: Railroads, Plantations, And War., Steven Gedson Collins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This work examines the emergence of organizational and bureaucratic ideas in the 19th-century South. It shows that organizational thinking took root in the antebellum South and grew during the Civil War. Many Southerners accepted the modern precepts of time, system, and bureaucratic control. They created of modern view of the world while incorporating slavery within this outlook. These same organizational ideals helped create a New South. The first section of this work examines how southern railroad managers introduced modern bureaucratic structures into their operations. At the same time, they incorporated slavery within this modern corporate structure. The second section examines …

Experimental Mammalian Predator Removal And Other Factors Affecting Dabbling Duck Reproduction In North Dakota., Pamela Renee Garrettson Jan 1999

Experimental Mammalian Predator Removal And Other Factors Affecting Dabbling Duck Reproduction In North Dakota., Pamela Renee Garrettson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the prairie pothole region, high predation rates often reduce duck nest success below the 15--20% thought necessary for population stability. Lethal removal of mammalian predators of duck nests is one potential management option, but there is little reliable information about the effects on nest success of removing mammalian predators without using poisons. On 16 4,150-ha blocks, half of them trapped during spring and summer, I found higher ( P < 0.001) nest success on trapped sites (45%) than on untrapped sites (17%). There were no year (P = 0.296), year-treatment (P = 0.423), or species-treatment (P > 0.895) effects. Nest success of blue-winged teal (Anas discors) and gadwalls (A. strepera) was higher than that of mallards ( A. platyrhynchos) and pintails (A. acuta, P = 0.028) on …

Scaling Simulations Of Reconfigurable Meshes., Jose Alberto Fernandez Zepeda Jan 1999

Scaling Simulations Of Reconfigurable Meshes., Jose Alberto Fernandez Zepeda

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation deals with reconfigurable bus-based models, a new type of parallel machine that uses dynamically alterable connections between processors to allow efficient communication and to perform fast computations. We focus this work on the Reconfigurable Mesh (R-Mesh), one of the most widely studied reconfigurable models. We study the ability of the R-Mesh to adapt an algorithm instance of an arbitrary size to run on a given smaller model size without significant loss of efficiency. A scaling simulation achieves this adaptation, and the simulation overhead expresses the efficiency of the simulation. We construct a scaling simulation for the Fusing-Restricted Reconfigurable …

Development Of Pseudostationary Phases For Separations In Electrokinetic Chromatography., Judson Leroy Haynes Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The research presented in this dissertation covers pseudo-stationary phase development for separations in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). Micelles and cyclodextrins have traditionally served as the most popular pseudo-stationary phases (PSPs) used in EKC. However, the development and implementation of PSPs, which have improved properties over traditional ones, are necessary to extend the utility of electrokinetic chromatography. This dissertation covers research contributions, chapter by chapter, to the area of PSP development made by the author. In addition to this, Chapter 1 covers a brief history of chromatography and the fundamentals of capillary electrophoresis and EKC. The first pseudo-stationary phase developed was a …

The Evolution Of The Red River Valley Settlement System, 1714--1860., Keumsoo Hong Jan 1999

The Evolution Of The Red River Valley Settlement System, 1714--1860., Keumsoo Hong

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Since the first European settlement was established in the middle of Indian territory in 1714, the Red River Valley had experienced a dramatic transformation until the end of the antebellum period. The trajectory of the evolution can be divided into five vertical cross sections. The formative phase (1714--1803) features the colonial regimes in political arena, less-specialized regional economies, nascent urban units laden heavily with defensive functions, and coerced labor system. The settlement system resembled a semi-primate pattern with Natchitoches on the summit. The period of the Territory of Orleans (1804--1812) corresponded to the transition phase. During this interim, traditional staples …

This investigation explored the effects of the interpersonal communication concepts of willingness to communicate, self-monitoring, and loneliness on the group outcomes of group attraction and group communication satisfaction. Using the Willingness to Communicate Scale (McCroskey, & Richmond, 1990), Lennox and Wolfe's (1984) Revised Self-monitoring Scale, the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale (Russell, Peplau, & Cutrona, 1980), an adaptation of Byrne's (1969) original Interpersonal Judgment Scale, and an adaptation of Hecht's (1978) Communication Satisfaction Inventory, communication dispositions were analyzed in relationship to group attraction and group communication satisfaction. Consistent with expectations, the results show that loneliness mediated reported group communication satisfaction. Individuals …

Essays On Identification Of Monetary Policy Shocks In Vector Autoregressive Models: Alternative Identification Schemes And Lag Structures., Keuk-Soo Kim Jan 1999

Essays On Identification Of Monetary Policy Shocks In Vector Autoregressive Models: Alternative Identification Schemes And Lag Structures., Keuk-Soo Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is primary concerned with the sensitivity of the effects of monetary policy shocks across alternative identification schemes and lag structures. The four widely-cited identification schemes of Christiano, Eichenbaum, and Evans (1994; 1996), Strongin (1995), Bernanke and Mihov (1998), and the long-run restrictions approach pioneered by Blanchard and Quah (1989) are used. Also, three types of lag structures---symmetric, Keating-type, and Hsiao-type asymmetric lag structures---are employed. The first essay focuses upon a closed economy framework. The results indicate that impulse response functions for macro variables are often sensitive to identification schemes and lag structures. For a given lag structure, the …

The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of accurate/inaccurate teacher instruction, high/low teacher delivery and on-/off-task student behavior on musicians' evaluations of teaching effectiveness. An additional purpose of this study was to determine whether differences in the musicians' evaluative responses of teacher effectiveness would occur due to differences in their experience level. Subjects (N = 168) were musicians and were grouped accordingly: (1) grades 6--8; (2) grades 9--12; (3) undergraduate; and (4) experienced teacher. The subjects viewed and evaluated a videotape of eight teaching segments for teacher effectiveness. The segments had been simulated by the investigator …

Another New South: Patterns Of Continuity In The Southern Naval Stores Industry., Robert Boone Outland Iii Jan 1999

Another New South: Patterns Of Continuity In The Southern Naval Stores Industry., Robert Boone Outland Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Analysis of southern naval stores production, an industry in many respects more representative of southern economic development than cotton textiles, reveals a pattern of continuity between the antebellum and post-war South. Naval stores manufacturing began in the colonial era but languished as a marginally-profitable business until the 1830s when new uses for spirits of turpentine resulted in increased demand and higher prices. Large turpentine operations developed almost exclusively in eastern North Carolina and the slaves, who performed most of the work, experienced distinct work patterns. By the 1850s, destructive gum-harvesting methods led to the depletion of North Carolina's longleaf pine …

Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Predation On Sediment- And Stem-Dwelling Meiofauna: Field And Laboratory Experiments, Christopher S. Gregg, John W. Fleeger

Faculty Publications

Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to clarify the predatory role of Palaemonetes pugio Holthius in salt-marsh benthic communities. Field experiments (cage enclosures using P. pugio as a predator) were conducted on unvegetated mudflat and vegetated-marsh sites. Neither sediment- or stem-dwelling meiofaunal abundances were significantly impacted. Laboratory experiments measured the functional response of P. pugio feeding on suspended harpacticoid copepods, tested the efficiency of P. pugio feeding on harpacticoids in sediments, and measured the predation rate of P. pugio on stem-dwelling meiofauna. Grass shrimp feeding rate on suspended copepods followed a type II functional response, increasing with increasing prey density …

Hst Observations Of Gro J1655 - 40 In Outburst, Robert I. Hynes

Faculty Publications

We examine the results of a coordinated HST-RXTE-CGRO campaign to study the microquasar GRO J1655-40 during its 1996-7 outburst, focusing on interpretation of the overall anti-correlation seen between optical and X-ray fluxes during the early months of the outburst. Our tools include echo-mapping, optical/UV continuum spectral modelling and analysis of spectral variability. We conclude by suggesting one possible interpretation for the anti-correlation.
