On The Numerical Solution Of The Cylindrical Poisson Equation For Isolated Self -Gravitating Systems., Howard Saul Cohl Jan 1999

On The Numerical Solution Of The Cylindrical Poisson Equation For Isolated Self -Gravitating Systems., Howard Saul Cohl

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses the need for an accurate and efficient technique which solves the Poisson equation for arbitrarily complex, isolated, self-gravitating fluid systems. Generally speaking, a potential solver is composed of two distinct pieces: a boundary solver and an interior solver. The boundary solver computes the potential, phi(xB) on a surface which bounds some finite volume of space, V, and contains an isolated mass-density distribution, rho(x). Given rho(x) and phi(xB), the interior solver computes the potential phi(x) everywhere within V. Herein, we describe the development of a numerical technique which efficiently solves Poisson's equation in cylindrical coordinates on massively parallel …

The Formation Of Short Period Binary Star Systems From Stable, Self-Gravitating, Gaseous Bars., John E. Cazes Jr Jan 1999

The Formation Of Short Period Binary Star Systems From Stable, Self-Gravitating, Gaseous Bars., John E. Cazes Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although we have a general understanding of how stars form, and there. are accepted theories that explain the formation of long-period binaries, we do not yet understand how short period binaries form. Here we present simulations that clearly demonstrate how such systems may form naturally from dense interstellar gas clouds. First, we present two models of compressible, self-gravitating fluid configurations with bar-like structures and supersonic internal motions. Both models have been constructed via dynamical simulations that have started from initially axisymmetric, rapidly rotating polytropes that were known to be dynamically unstable toward the development of a bar-like or two-armed spiral …

Clarinet Concertos By Post World War Ii Generation Norwegian Composers: Bjorn Kruse, Olav Berg, And Rolf Wallin., Beverly Ann Gibson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A substantial body of Norwegian clarinet literature exists that is infrequently performed outside of the Scandinavian countries and Europe. A new generation of composers emerged in the 1980s who have made visible their own individual approaches to composition. This monograph focuses on a selection of clarinet concertos composed by Bjorn Kruse (b. 1946), Olav Berg (b. 1949), and Rolf Wallin (b. 1957) which represent the most extensive pieces for clarinet in the respective composers' outputs to date and have been awarded prizes in composition contests. The composers have distinguished themselves as leading figures in the contemporary music scene in Norway, …

Community Structure And The Effects Of Experimental Fires On Hardwood Shrub Species In Southeastern Longleaf Pine Savannas., Paul Boguslaw Drewa Jan 1999

Community Structure And The Effects Of Experimental Fires On Hardwood Shrub Species In Southeastern Longleaf Pine Savannas., Paul Boguslaw Drewa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main objective of this dissertation is to describe and examine how altering fire regimes in southeastern longleaf pine savannas may affect the abundances and distributions of indigenous plant species. In chapter one, I investigate whether herbs, compared to shrubs, have greater utility in delineating communities along elevation gradients of several meters in longleaf pine savannas. Herbaceous and shrub abundance data were analyzed separately for areas in Louisiana and Florida using cluster analysis and ordination. In Louisiana, three plant communities were sharply delineated and strongly correlated with gradients in elevation, surface soil moisture, and other surface soil properties. Herbaceous species …

Crossing Over: An Oral History Of The Desegregation Experience Of Public School Personnel In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Douglas Raymond Davis Jan 1999

Crossing Over: An Oral History Of The Desegregation Experience Of Public School Personnel In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Douglas Raymond Davis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Fall of 1970 marked an important change in the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System. In the previous 1969--70 school year, only three thousand out of twenty-three thousand African American children in the district attended school with White children. In 1970, the number rose to nearly nineteen thousand. In addition, for the first time, school personnel, busses, and extra curricular activities were desegregated. Over six-hundred teachers began the 1970 school year teaching in schools that were previously and predominantly another race. This event, known as the "cross-over," is the subject of this dissertation. The historical study of the …

The Effect Of *Modeling And Tempo Gradations As Practice Techniques On The Performance Of High School Instrumentalists., Paul Thomas Henley Jan 1999

The Effect Of *Modeling And Tempo Gradations As Practice Techniques On The Performance Of High School Instrumentalists., Paul Thomas Henley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of modeling conditions and tempo gradations as practice techniques on the performance of high school instrumentalists. Specifically, the independent variables of this study were model versus no model; and steady increase of tempo versus performance speed tempo versus alternating (slower and faster) tempos. Subjects (N = 60) were high school wind instrumentalists from the Midwest and the South. Subjects sight-read an etude, practiced the same etude six times using one of six distinct practice conditions, which were combinations of the two independent variables, and performed a posttest on the same …

Effects Of Winter Burning And Structural Marsh Management On Bird And Plant Communities Of The Gulf Coast Chenier Plain., Steven Walter Gabrey Jan 1999

Effects Of Winter Burning And Structural Marsh Management On Bird And Plant Communities Of The Gulf Coast Chenier Plain., Steven Walter Gabrey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Many Gulf Coast Chenier Plain marshes are managed through a combination of winter burning and structural marsh management (SMM) to improve habitats for waterfowl and furbearers and reduce wetland loss. These practices are controversial because of concerns regarding ability to achieve goals coupled with potential negative effects on other marsh processes or organisms. I investigated the effects of winter burning and SMM on bird and plant communities of Chenier Plain marshes in southwest Louisiana. I recorded bird and plant species abundance and vegetation structure in experimental burned and unburned marshes over two winters and three breeding seasons. Vegetation structure (visual …

Pine-Polyethylene (Wood -Polymer) Composites: Synthesis And Mechanical Behavior Characterization., Parviz S. Razi Jan 1999

Pine-Polyethylene (Wood -Polymer) Composites: Synthesis And Mechanical Behavior Characterization., Parviz S. Razi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Processing of recycled wood chips, recently produced after extraction of creosote from telephone posts and railroad crossties, and combining them with a recycled polymer for the synthesis of novel composite materials would initiate a new trend toward preservation of natural resources. The challenge is taken in this work to produce and study the properties of such materials for further advancement of science. In the present study, addition of pine wood chips to HDPE reduced the tensile strength and break strain in tensile loading. Smaller wood chips generally resulted in smaller reductions. Peak load, modulus of rupture and stiffness were slightly …

Design Of Work-Rest Schedules For Vdt Operators., Rana Balci Jan 1999

Design Of Work-Rest Schedules For Vdt Operators., Rana Balci

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The number of musculoskeletal and psychological discomforts is increasing as a result of continuing growth of VDT work. Although ergonomic improvements in workstation design can be applied, an effective work-rest schedule is an economical way to reduce these problems. The objective of this research was to determine an effective work-rest schedule for VDT operators. In addition to a discomfort questionnaire, performance and electromyography measurements from trapezius and flexor carpi radialis were used. Three different work-rest schedules were applied: 60-minute work/10-minute rest, 30-minute work/5-minute rest, and for the third schedule, the subjects received four breaks from VDT work each hour additional …

Holding Back The Waters: Land Development And The Origins Of Levees On The Mississippi, 1720-1845., Jeffrey Alan Owens Jan 1999

Holding Back The Waters: Land Development And The Origins Of Levees On The Mississippi, 1720-1845., Jeffrey Alan Owens

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Man's efforts to control flooding on the Mississippi began about 280 years ago, but the first 130 years has been neglected in scholarly literature. In spite of abundant primary sources, most histories of flood control on the Mississippi revolve around hydraulic engineering and the contributions of state and federal levee bureaucracies---factors which had almost no impact on the creation of the levee system. Engineers did install the first levee at New Orleans and levees on their own plantations in the 1720s, but the extension of the levee line thereafter was almost entirely the work of private land developers supervised at …

Nonaxisymmetric Equilibrium Models For Gaseous Galaxy Disks., Paul Fisher Jan 1999

Nonaxisymmetric Equilibrium Models For Gaseous Galaxy Disks., Paul Fisher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations show that, in the absence of self-gravity, an axisymmetric, gaseous galaxy disk whose angular momentum vector is initially tipped at an angle i0 to the symmetry axis of a fixed spheroidal dark matter halo potential does not settle to the equatorial plane of the halo. Instead, the disk settles to a plane that is tipped at an angle a = arctan [ q2 tan i0] to the equatorial plane of the halo, where q is the axis ratio of the halo equipotential surfaces. The equilibrium configuration to which the disk settles appears to be flat but it …

Interactions On Minerals And Organic Materials Along The Salinity Gradient In Barataria Basin, Louisiana., Jessica Anne Kastler Jan 1999

Interactions On Minerals And Organic Materials Along The Salinity Gradient In Barataria Basin, Louisiana., Jessica Anne Kastler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Changes in the associations among mineral and organic materials in estuaries may control the nature and quantity of organic material (OM) preserved in sediment deposits or cycled in the water column. Estuarine sediment-OM attachments were examined using descriptive analyses and experiments to assess their response to salinity changes and the bioavailability of sedimentary OM. Desorption experiments compared the amount of organic carbon extracted from sediment in rinses of different salinity. Uptake experiments monitored changes in carbon and bacteria concentrations to compare the bioavailability of dissolved and sedimentary OM. Clay mineralogy, surface area and elemental analysis of suspended and deposited sediment …

Studies On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression In Lipopolysaccharide-Stimulated Macrophages., Byeong Churl Jang Jan 1999

Studies On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression In Lipopolysaccharide-Stimulated Macrophages., Byeong Churl Jang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cyclooxygenase (COX) is the key enzyme in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins (PGs) known as pro-inflammatory mediators. COX has two isoforms: the constitutively expressed COX-1 and the mitogen-inducible COX-2. It has been demonstrated that COX-2 expression is selectively induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment after several hours in rat alveolar macrophages (Lee et al., 1992; Chanmugam et al., 1995). The mitogen-activated protein kinases [MAPKs; extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs), P38, and c-jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs)], nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), and Lyn kinase are known to be activated in the early stages (within minutes) of LPS signaling pathways. In the current study, the …

Precursors For Chemical And Photochemical Vapor Deposition Of Copper Metal., Alicia Marie James Jan 1999

Precursors For Chemical And Photochemical Vapor Deposition Of Copper Metal., Alicia Marie James

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The colorless square-planar cluster [CuN(SiMe3)2] 4, which contains four Cu(I) ions with four bridging amide groups, was studied as a precursor for chemical and photochemical vapor deposition of Cu metal. The cluster phosphoresces in CH2Cl2 solution and in the solid state at room temperature. Its electronic spectrum in CH 2Cl2 consists of two intense bands which are assigned to symmetry-allowed 3d → 4p transitions; the phosphorescence is also likely to be metal-centered. Solid [CuN(SiMe3)2]4 luminesces with approximately the same spectrum as that of the CH2Cl2 solutions. At 77 K, the solid-state luminescence red-shifts slightly. The emission lifetime in glassy Et2O …

Chromosomal Location Of Genes For Leafiness (Lfy1) And Susceptibility To Nicosulfuron (Nsf1) In Maize Genome., Orlando Jose Moreno Jan 1999

Chromosomal Location Of Genes For Leafiness (Lfy1) And Susceptibility To Nicosulfuron (Nsf1) In Maize Genome., Orlando Jose Moreno

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Genes that may confer resistance to diseases, tolerance to plant stress, good stalk quality, high yield potential and/or other desirable attributes are important. The leafy gene (Lfy1Lfy1) discovered in 1971 in maize (Zea mays L.) is known to produce much higher yields in hybrids that possess it. These hybrids suffer much less stalk lodging than those with the non-leafy (lfy1 lfy1) gene. The location of the leafy gene to a chromosome arm could facilitate both its transfer from one genotype to another and its use in linkage studies and aid in completing the maize linkage map. The purpose of this …

The Historical And Cultural Geography Of The Grange In Minnesota And Louisiana, 1870-1880., Linda Marie Thorstad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study uses historical and geographical inquiry to examine postbellum agrarian social, political and economic unrest that in 1868 led to the formation of the first national, secret and ritualistic, fraternal agricultural society known as the Grange. The Grange was created to unite farmers through cooperative buying and selling, to promote agricultural education, and to create a social organization that encouraged both women and men to acquire and refine leadership skills. It also sought to address concerns over monopolies and promoted state regulation of railroad rates. Although Grange membership peaked in 1875 and sharply declined through 1880, it forged the …

Effects Of Fluctuating Salinity, Nutritional State, And Temperature On Leptasterias Spp. From Little Port Walter, Alaska., Jeffrey William Tamplin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of fluctuating salinity, nutritional state, and temperature on activity, oxygen consumption, feeding, and growth rates were analyzed on seasonally collected Leptasterias spp. (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) from Little Port Walter, AK. Leptasterias aspera and L. epichlora were collected on June 10, 1994, divided into size groups, and perivisceral fluid osmolality was measured every three hours during a 12 h 30-10-30‰S fluctuating cycle. The perivisceral fluid osmolality of larger individuals fluctuated less than that of smaller sea stars. The perivisceral fluid osmolality of small and large Leptasterias spp. closely tracks the ambient water osmolality during tidal cycles. Leptasterias spp. were collected …

Effectiveness Of Web-Based Virtual Learning Environments In Business Education: Focusing On Basic Skills Training For Information Technology., Rami Mahmoud Ahmad Jan 1999

Effectiveness Of Web-Based Virtual Learning Environments In Business Education: Focusing On Basic Skills Training For Information Technology., Rami Mahmoud Ahmad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Calls for transforming the learning industries and revolutionizing business education are being answered by a proliferation of virtual learning environments, capitalizing on ever-growing and universal Internet-related technologies. This dissertation describes research investigating the effectiveness of web-based virtual environments by comparing traditional and information technology enhanced learning environments. A conceptual framework is proposed contrasting the effectiveness of these two environments across two learning models---the objectivist and the constructivist. Although technology may serve as a moderator that enhances the implementation of certain features of a learning model, there is a consensus that the learning model---not the technology---is the primary cause of learning. …

Extratropical Storms Of The Gulf Of Mexico And Their Effects Along The Northern Coast Of A Barrier Island: West Ship Island, Mississippi., Phillip Lynn Chaney Jan 1999

Extratropical Storms Of The Gulf Of Mexico And Their Effects Along The Northern Coast Of A Barrier Island: West Ship Island, Mississippi., Phillip Lynn Chaney

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The north-facing, estuarine shores of barrier islands along the northern Gulf of Mexico are experiencing severe shoreline erosion. This erosion process is related to storm events that occur when cold fronts pass along the coast. These cold fronts are associated with the migration of extratropical (mid-latitude) cyclones and anticyclones across the region in winter. Wind data collected by a NOAA weather buoy over the period 1981--1997 were used, in conjunction with daily weather maps, to evaluate winter storm activity. Seven synoptic weather patterns that produced extratropical storm events along the northern Gulf Coast were identified. Statistics were computed for the …

In Vivo And In Vitro Stimulation Of Murine Splenocytes With Brevetoxin-2 Immunogenic Conjugates For The Preparation Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Ciguatoxin-Related Compounds., Sonia Edith Guzman Perez Jan 1999

In Vivo And In Vitro Stimulation Of Murine Splenocytes With Brevetoxin-2 Immunogenic Conjugates For The Preparation Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Ciguatoxin-Related Compounds., Sonia Edith Guzman Perez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The proliferation of toxic algae is a natural phenomenon known as a harmful algal bloom. Ciguatera fish poisoning and neurotoxic fish poisoning are syndromes associated with this phenomenon. Current methods for the detection of their toxins (ciguatoxins and brevetoxins) are expensive, time-consuming, require trained personnel and special laboratory equipment. In the case of ciguatoxins, the lack of standard material worsens the problem. Specific objectives of this study included the use of brevetoxin-2 (PbTx-2) for the preparation of antibodies which could cross-react with ciguatoxins, the use of different PbTx-2 immunogenic conjugates, the use of in vivo versus in vitro stimulation of …

In Situ Nmr And Ft-Ir Studies On A Bimetallic Hydroformylation Catalyst., Rhonda Carter Matthews Jan 1999

In Situ Nmr And Ft-Ir Studies On A Bimetallic Hydroformylation Catalyst., Rhonda Carter Matthews

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This work describes a study of the mechanism by which a unique homogeneous bimetallic hydroformylation catalyst based on two rhodium metal centers chelated and bridged by a special tetraphosphine ligand works via bimetallic cooperativity. Hydroformylation runs on this bimetallic system which indicate higher rates of production and higher linear to branched product regioselectivity relative to the commercial monometallic Rh/PPh3 catalyst make this system a viable candidate for an almost completely new and effective way of performing hydroformylation catalysis. Numerous complexes have been characterized by in situ FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic studies, as well as X-ray crystallography, and support the presence …

Systematics, Ecology, And Social Biology Of The Musk Duck (Biziura Lobata) Of Australia., Kevin Grant Mccracken Jan 1999

Systematics, Ecology, And Social Biology Of The Musk Duck (Biziura Lobata) Of Australia., Kevin Grant Mccracken

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Musk Ducks (Biziura lobata) exhibit a number of unusual morphological and behavioral traits. The most notable of these include: greatly abducted hind-limbs for underwater swimming efficiency, extreme sexual size dimorphism and pronounced structural dimorphism, lek display activity, elaborate sexual display repertoires, and the distinctly non-waterfowl-like trait of provisioning young with all their food from the time of hatch until fledging. Despite such peculiarities and obvious theoretical potential in the areas of comparative morphology, sexual selection, and brood ecology, few studies of Musk Ducks have been undertaken, and those to date have been either small in scope and design, or focused …

Improving Searches For Gravitational Wave Bursts., Carroll Andrew Morse Jan 1999

Improving Searches For Gravitational Wave Bursts., Carroll Andrew Morse

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The first half of this dissertation discusses the details of calibrating a resonant mass gravitational wave antenna and determining its sensitivity. We dispense with the assumption of a perfectly tuned antenna and transducer and model the system using a coordinate rotation. We demonstrate that all of the important model parameters can be directly measured. We demonstrate that the signal response of the two detector modes should be equal despite any mistuning and that the mistuning parameter can be measured in two separate ways. These properties are useful for determining the degree to which a real detector's behavior parallels that of …

Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Silicon Nitride And Oxynitride Films Using Disilane As Silicon Source., Giridhar Nallapati Jan 1999

Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Silicon Nitride And Oxynitride Films Using Disilane As Silicon Source., Giridhar Nallapati

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Process characterization details along with the electrical properties of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposited silicon nitride and oxynitride films are reported, for the first time, using disilane as the silicon source. Two regimes of deposition, namely excess-disilane regime and excess-ammonia regime, were observed for deposition of silicon nitride films using disilane, ammonia and helium. Films deposited under process conditions falling at the boundary of these two regimes had deposition rates that were mostly dependent on rf power and gas flow ratio resulting in highly repeatable film qualities. Silicon nitride films deposited on Si wafers at 250°C and post-metallization annealed in …

Biological Diversity And Cultural Survival: Mopan Maya Traditional Culture And Environmental Change In Southern Belize., Michael Kenneth Steinberg

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a study of the causal relationship between the decline of cultural diversity and environmental diversity. My study investigates the larger-scale economic, political, and social factors that result in the rejection of traditional land use strategies and how these changing strategies ultimately lead to an overall decline in environmental diversity in the Mopan Maya landscape in southern Belize. Five Mopan Maya cultural biogeographic case studies are presented, including the management of maize diversity, the species composition and variability of kitchen gardens, swidden-fallow agroforestry practices, traditional bee keeping, and hunting game and habitat preferences. These topics were chosen because …

An Analysis And Performer's Guide To The Sonatine For Flute And Piano By Pierre Boulez., Diana M. Tiffany

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In spite of the preeminence of its composer, the Sonatine for Flute and Piano by Pierre Boulez is not a well known work. The piece poses truly formidable technical and aesthetic challenges for players and audiences. The purpose of this study is to present an analysis and some practical suggestions for flutists preparing the piece for performance. This serial-based work is divided into four continuous main stanzas, each demonstrating a different style and varying compositional techniques while using the same row. The repetition of specific pitch-class sets, rhythm motives, and pitch classes within each stanza lends each one aurally identifiable …

An Empirical Examination Of Maximum Entropy Estimation., Randall Charles Campbell Jan 1999

An Empirical Examination Of Maximum Entropy Estimation., Randall Charles Campbell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Maximum entropy estimation is a relatively new estimation technique in econometrics. We carry out several Monte Carlo experiments using real data as a basis in order to understand the properties of the maximum entropy estimator. We compare the maximum entropy and generalized maximum entropy estimators to traditional estimation techniques in linear regression, binary choice, and multinomial choice models. In addition, we discuss maximum entropy estimation in censored and truncated regression models. We find that the generalized maximum entropy estimator dominates the logit estimator and the multinomial logit estimator in Monte Carlo experiments. The generalized maximum entropy estimator in discrete choice …
