The Search For Senefiance: Contraires Allegories In The "Roman De La Rose", Camilla Rachal Pugh Jan 1999

The Search For Senefiance: Contraires Allegories In The "Roman De La Rose", Camilla Rachal Pugh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is the thesis of this dissertation that there exists in the Roman de la Rose a system of contraires allegories which move in a direction opposed to the traditional readings of three facets of the text. They are (1) Amant's assault upon the statue/sanctuary, (2) his relationship with Bel Accueil, and (3) the advice which Genius gives to Amour's barons. In addition, when taken cumulatively, the readings advanced argue for the identification of the Roman de la Rose with the Evangile eternel of Joachim de Fiore. These readings depend upon the reader's recognition of Faus Semblant as a contraire …

The Women On/Of The Porch: Performative Space In African-American Women's Fiction., Lajuan Evette Simpson Jan 1999

The Women On/Of The Porch: Performative Space In African-American Women's Fiction., Lajuan Evette Simpson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mediating Structures in African-American literature are essential in the formation of identity in the lives of the characters. Contemporary theory has moved into a deeper layer of hermeneutics beyond self/other dichotomies to look at the space between binary opposites. Therefore, modern theorists look at sites of play, of exchange, and of transformation. The porch is such a space. A mediating structure is a space that allows the various characters to develop and define themselves. Because of African-Americans, lack of freedom, it was important for them to find a space in which they were able to move and express their ideas, …

Computational Approach For Determination Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Soils Using Continuous Intrusion Piezocone Penetration Test., Chung Rak Song Jan 1999

Computational Approach For Determination Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Soils Using Continuous Intrusion Piezocone Penetration Test., Chung Rak Song

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In order to obtain the hydraulic conductivity or the coefficient of consolidation of the soil from PCPT, the pore pressure response during dissipation test is typically used. This method, however, requires the intermittent stopping of the advancement of the piezocone penetrometer for the dissipation test. Also, this method does not fully take into account the pore pressure interaction between near and far fields as pointed out by previous researchers (Kurup and Tumay, 1997). Thus a new rational approach is investigated here. The proposed method utilizes the pore water pressure during the penetration of the piezocone penetrometer. By its nature, the …

Effects Of The 4 X 4 Block Schedule On Teacher Behavior And Student Engagement Rate At The High School Level., Karen Meredith Soniat Jan 1999

Effects Of The 4 X 4 Block Schedule On Teacher Behavior And Student Engagement Rate At The High School Level., Karen Meredith Soniat

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Numerous educators have suggested that traditional scheduling practices in the nation's schools have contributed to the inability of teachers to utilize "proven" instructional techniques. This study examined the effects of the 4 x 4 block schedule on teaching behavior and student engagement rate in four core curriculum areas in 21 Louisiana high schools. This causal-comparative, ex-post facto study involved three group of schools matched to the extent possible on student population, free/reduced lunch, and community type. The 250 teachers in the Phase I (quantitative study) sample were randomly selected and measured via classroom observations. MANOVA results relating to differences on …

Sire Selection And Mating Practices In United States Dairy Herd Improvement Association Holstein Herds., Asiye Yilmaz Jan 1999

Sire Selection And Mating Practices In United States Dairy Herd Improvement Association Holstein Herds., Asiye Yilmaz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Over two million Holstein mating records was used to investigate selection and mating practices. Population statistics revealed non-random mating and selection. Herd production level was associated with higher breeding value sires and price paid per unit of semen. The decision to use an Artificial Insemination (AI) sire or natural service sire was studied and a discriminant function was derived that accurately categorized matings in a test data set of 117,000 observations, with an error rate less than 2.5 percent. Discriminating variables were herd production level, lactation number, service number, breeding month, cow status code, and days in milk at breeding. …

Hazards To Navigation On The Lower Mississippi River And At -Risk Human Populations., George P. Wooddell Jr Jan 1999

Hazards To Navigation On The Lower Mississippi River And At -Risk Human Populations., George P. Wooddell Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation tests whether known hazards to navigation determine the location of vessel accidents along the lower Mississippi River and describes the human populations most at risk according to predictions. The data are comprised of the relative risk index of river hazards (Forsyth et al. 1996, Gramling et al. 1998), the demographic characteristics of nearby residents, (U.S. Census 1990), and actual U.S. Coast Guard accident reports. Usable predictors of vessel accidents and a knowledge of population characteristics will enable better planning of emergency response, better placement of emergency response equipment, and more effective efforts to prevent vessel. accidents along the …

Practicing Freedom With Care: The Development Of Warrior-Caregiving In Contemporary Literature From The Americas., Joanna Barszewska Marshall Jan 1999

Practicing Freedom With Care: The Development Of Warrior-Caregiving In Contemporary Literature From The Americas., Joanna Barszewska Marshall

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Taking my cue from Toni Morrison's Playing in the Dark, I read three contemporary Black writers in the Americas---George Lamming, Barbados; Michelle Cliff, Jamaica; and Jess Mowry, United States---for signs of a response that was ignored when prevailing conceptions of freedom were formulated in early America. Suggesting that the vision embodied in the name of one plantation, Sans Souci, characterized attempts to deal with the anxieties of a slaveholding free republic, I argue that these writers provide an alternative vision by attempting to reconcile the practices of freedom and care, and I engage their vision in dialogue with several theoretical …

How The Villanelle's Form Got Fixed., Julie Ellen Kane Jan 1999

How The Villanelle's Form Got Fixed., Julie Ellen Kane

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This work debunks the myth of the villanelle as a "fixed poetic form" dating back to the sixteenth century or earlier and replaces it with a new-historical account of how a semi-improvisatory musico-poetic genre, the choral-dance lyric, was "translated" across ruptures in lyric technology between oral, manuscript, and print cultures. The "fixity" of the villanelle's written form is shown to be not a matter of long-standing "heritage" or "tradition," but the result of deliberate actions taken by one eighteenth- and one nineteenth-century individual who inserted less-than-truthful passages into otherwise "authoritative" prosodic treatises. Chapter 1 identifies the literary sources responsible for …

The Influence Of Climate For Belief In The Overseas Mission On Cross-Cultural Training Effectiveness., Charles Andrew Handler Jan 1999

The Influence Of Climate For Belief In The Overseas Mission On Cross-Cultural Training Effectiveness., Charles Andrew Handler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study represents the presentation and empirical investigation of a model of cross-cultural training (CCT) effectiveness. This model develops the idea that characteristics of the individual and the organization may influence trainees' motivation to learn and thus may impact the effectiveness of CCT programs. The proposed model is unique in that it suggests trainees, perceptions of a specific climate referent, climate for belief in the overseas mission, may serve as an organizational characteristic that can impact CCT effectiveness. It is proposed that perceptions of a climate for belief in the overseas mission are created via organizational members, shared perceptions of …

Toward An Understanding Of Instructor-Student Interactions: A Study Of Videoconferencing In The Postsecondary Distance Learning Classroom., Thomas R. Atkinson Jr Jan 1999

Toward An Understanding Of Instructor-Student Interactions: A Study Of Videoconferencing In The Postsecondary Distance Learning Classroom., Thomas R. Atkinson Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This qualitative case study examined interactions, the effect of instructional strategies on interactions, participant attitudes, and perceptions that occurred during two courses taught via interactive videoconferencing in higher education. Analysis of coded observational data, field notes, and interviews with students and instructors provided insights about the distance learning environment. Using an interaction model, the classroom interactions were grouped into the following categories: (a) learner-content, (b) learner-instructor, (c) learner-learner, and (d) learner-interface. Results showed that learner-instructor and learner-learner interactions were highest during classes which were organized as discussion sessions with specific guidelines for the content and the nature of questions on …

Sediment-Air Partitioning Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemicals., Guilhem De Seze Jan 1999

Sediment-Air Partitioning Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemicals., Guilhem De Seze

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Contaminated sediments that become exposed to the air as a result of dredging or water receding are potential sources of emissions of toxic compounds to the atmosphere. Exposure models are currently being developed to assess the risk associated with this pathway of contaminant release and to design efficient remediation techniques. A critical parameter in these emission models is the equilibrium partition coefficient of the contaminant between the sediment and the air. In this study, the sediment-air equilibrium partitioning of a polymiclear aromatic hydrocarbon (phenanthrene) and a heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (dibenzofuran) was investigated. Both classes of compounds are commonly found in …

I/O-Conscious Tiling For Disk-Resident Data Sets, Mahmut Kandemir, Alok Choudhary, J. Ramanujam Jan 1999

I/O-Conscious Tiling For Disk-Resident Data Sets, Mahmut Kandemir, Alok Choudhary, J. Ramanujam

Faculty Publications

This paper describes a tiling technique that can be used by application programmers and optimizing compilers to obtain I/O-efficient versions of regular scientific loop nests. Due to the particular characteristics of I/O operations, straightforward extension of the traditional tiling method to I/O-intensive programs may result in poor I/O performance. Therefore, the technique proposed in this paper customizes iteration space tiling for high I/O performance. The generated code results in huge savings in the number of I/O calls as well as the data volume transferred between the disk subsystem and main memory. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

A Matrix-Based Approach To Global Locality Optimization, Mahmut Kandemir, Alok Choudhary, J. Ramanujam, Prith Banerjee Jan 1999

A Matrix-Based Approach To Global Locality Optimization, Mahmut Kandemir, Alok Choudhary, J. Ramanujam, Prith Banerjee

Faculty Publications

Global locality optimization is a technique for improving the cache performance of a sequence of loop nests through a combination of loop and data layout transformations. Pure loop transformations are restricted by data dependencies and may not be very successful in optimizing imperfectly nested loops and explicitly parallelized programs. Although pure data transformations are not constrained by data dependencies, the impact of a data transformation on an array might be program-wide; that is, it can affect all the references to that array in all the loop nests. Therefore, in this paper we argue for an integrated approach that employs both …

A Global Communication Optimization Technique Based On Data-Flow Analysis And Linear Algebra, M. Kandemir, P. Banerjee, A. Choudhary, J. Ramanujam, N. Shenoy

Faculty Publications

Reducing communication overhead is extremely important in distributed-memory message-passing architectures. In this article, we present a technique to improve communication that considers data access patterns of the entire program. Our approach is based on a combination of traditional data-flow analysis and a linear algebra framework, and it works on structured programs with conditional statements and nested loops but without arbitrary goto statements. The distinctive features of the solution are the accuracy in keeping communication set information, support for general alignments and distributions including block-cyclic distributions, and the ability to simulate some of the previous approaches with suitable modifications. We also …

Large Magnitude Sinusoidal Voltammetry For Reversible Electrochemical Reactions., Yide Chang Jan 1999

Large Magnitude Sinusoidal Voltammetry For Reversible Electrochemical Reactions., Yide Chang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sinusoidal voltammetry, the current response of a simple reversible electrochemical reaction under a large magnitude sinusoidal potential, is investigated in this work. The ferricyanide/ferrocyanide (Fe(CN)6-3/-4 ) redox couple at a platinum electrode, which is known to be reversible, was measured using sinusoidal potentials. Theoretical analyses, including computer-simulation of sinusoidal voltammetry at various excitation potentials, are also presented. The results obtained are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. One remarkable advantage of sinusoidal voltammetry is that the charging current accompanying the electrode process, which is the most significant components of the noise at a fast potential scan, may be discriminated …

Application Of Barton Esters In Polymer Modification., Timothy S. Evenson Jan 1999

Application Of Barton Esters In Polymer Modification., Timothy S. Evenson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Esters of N-hydroxypyridine-2-thione, known as Barton esters, dissociate homolytically upon exposure to heat or light generating chain initiating acyloxy radicals and pyridine sulfide radicals that lead to 2,2'-dipyridyl disulfide. The dominant mode of Barton ester consumption is chain transfer, yielding pyridinesulfide end groups and acyloxy radicals. Thermolysis (80°C) or photolysis (25°C) of Barton esters initiated polymerization of styrene. The polymerization rate was found to be independent of Barton ester concentration. Chain transfer to initiator controls molecular weight; the chain transfer constants for phenyl Barton ester in styrene and acrylamide are 0.96 and 0.08 respectively. Polymer end-groups were identified as an …

Preparing Undergraduate Music Majors To Teach Beginning Instrumentalists: The Effects Of Self-Evaluation, Teacher Observation, And Performance-Oriented Instructional Approaches On Teacher Behaviors And Pupil Responses., Leigh-Ann Marie Lethco Jan 1999

Preparing Undergraduate Music Majors To Teach Beginning Instrumentalists: The Effects Of Self-Evaluation, Teacher Observation, And Performance-Oriented Instructional Approaches On Teacher Behaviors And Pupil Responses., Leigh-Ann Marie Lethco

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of three approaches to training preservice instrumental music teachers (N = 22) for initial teaching experiences involving beginning instrumentalists ( N = 22). The three approaches---one involving intensive self-evaluation activities, a second focusing on observation of experienced instrumental music teachers, and a third evidencing a performance orientation---were administered as a four-week treatment phase in an undergraduate brass techniques course. Primarily, this study was designed to answer the question: Did instructional approach differentially affect teacher behavior across two private lessons? Teacher (subject) and pupil behaviors were documented and categorized according to …
