Effect Of An Individualized Treatment Protocol On Competency Restoration In Pretrial Forensic Inpatients., Lisa Jo Bertman Jan 1999

Effect Of An Individualized Treatment Protocol On Competency Restoration In Pretrial Forensic Inpatients., Lisa Jo Bertman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Competency to stand trial refers to a defendant's ability to consult with his attorney with a reasonable degree of factual and rational understanding of the proceedings against him. If declared incompetent to stand trial by the courts, judicial proceedings are postponed until a defendant's competency deficits are remediated. However, there is a paucity of data on treatment of individuals who have been declared incompetent to stand trial. This study evaluated the effectiveness of individualized treatment on competency restoration in pretrial patients. This investigation improved upon previous group treatment studies, all but one of which were uncontrolled. Treatment groups were: Deficit-Focused …

Exercised animals exhibited significant increases in plasma lactate, plasma cortisol, LAK cell …

Ideomotor Apraxia And Lesion Location: Analysis Of Error Types, Motor Function, And Task Demands., Brenda Hanna-Pladdy Jan 1999

Ideomotor Apraxia And Lesion Location: Analysis Of Error Types, Motor Function, And Task Demands., Brenda Hanna-Pladdy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Ideomotor apraxia is a disorder of learned skilled movement which typically has been attributed to damage confined predominantly to the frontal and parietal cortical areas within the hemisphere dominant for speech. However, most studies of the anatomical basis of apraxia have relied on case studies or have only approximate lesion localization, and few studies have examined motor performance in relation to lesion location. This study examined the relationship of apraxia severity to lesion location (in both cortical/subcortical dimensions and anterior/posterior dimensions), aphasia, motor performance, and task demands, and identified the existence of subtypes of apraxia with characteristic performance profiles (error …

Characterization Of The Microsomal Mixed -Function Oxidase System Of Several Species Of Sea Anemones (Phylum: Cnidaria)., Linda Marie Heffernan Jan 1999

Characterization Of The Microsomal Mixed -Function Oxidase System Of Several Species Of Sea Anemones (Phylum: Cnidaria)., Linda Marie Heffernan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Several studies have demonstrated detrimental effects of anthropogenic compounds on coral reef communities. These compounds are known to be bioaccumulated rapidly, but eliminated slowly by anthozoans (i.e., corals and sea anemones). The cytochrome P450-dependent mixed function oxidase (MFO) system is the primary pathway for initial oxidation of many hydrophobic exogenous compounds; however, its presence had not been well documented in anthozoans. The studies reported herein show that a functional cytochrome P450-dependent MFO is present in the microsomal fraction of the sea anemones Anthopleura xanthogrammica , A. elegantissima, and Bunodosoma cavernata . The evidence is based on the presence of classical …

The key element in the success of industries is using the continuous process improvement strategies like reducing process variability and reducing response time to process deviations. Achieving quality in manufacturing processes is an …

Elongational Rheology Of Polyethylene Melts., Bijan Seyfzadeh Jan 1999

Elongational Rheology Of Polyethylene Melts., Bijan Seyfzadeh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Elongational melt flow behavior is an important and fundamental concept underlying many industrial plastics operations which involve a rapid change of shape as for example fiber spinning and stretching, bottle blow molding, and film blowing and stretching. Under high process loads polymeric materials experience enormous stresses causing the molecular structure to gain considerable orientation. This event has significant effects on the melt flow behavior and can be measured in terms of elongational viscosity and changes in enthalpy and entropy. Different polymeric materials with unique molecular characteristics are expected to respond uniquely to the elongational deformation; hence, molecular parameters such as …

An Engineering Equation Of State: Square-Well Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (Saft)., Hertanto Adidharma Jan 1999

An Engineering Equation Of State: Square-Well Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (Saft)., Hertanto Adidharma

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Molecular thermodynamics is an engineering discipline rooted in molecular physics and physical chemistry and aimed at developing practical models that predict the properties of matter. The goal of this work is to develop a molecular thermodynamic model for predicting fluid densities, phase equilibria, and energy functions, such as enthalpy and heat capacity. Chemical engineers need these properties to develop and design new processes and materials, and to make these processes energy efficient and environmentally benign. The approach is to hypothesize a mathematical approximation that captures interactions among real molecules on the basis of a molecular theory called the statistical associating …

Understanding Congressional Responsiveness., Phillip Jude Ardoin Jan 1999

Understanding Congressional Responsiveness., Phillip Jude Ardoin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses a simple question: Why are some members of congress very responsive to the ideological preferences of their constituency while others appear to ignore their constituency? Although numerous scholars have explored this issue, they have consistently: (1) limited their analyses to the influence of member characteristics while ignoring the potentially significant influence of constituent factors and (2) failed to test a single comprehensive model of congressional responsiveness that considers the full range of member and constituent factors hypothesized to influence variation in congressional responsiveness. This dissertation directly addresses these two problems by developing and testing a comprehensive model …

The CRRES satellite was in service from July 1990 to October 1991, during a period of high solar modulation and solar activity. The ONR-604 experiment aboard CRRES measured helium with isotopic resolution in the energy range 38--110 MeV/nucleon, and heavy ions through iron at 200--500 MeV/nucleon. Although solar modulation was high throughout the CRRES mission, the mission included periods of solar quiescence as well as a number of large solar flares and associated solar energetic particle events. Measurements were made of helium and heavy ions during both the quiet times and the flare periods. A study was made to search …

Reawakening Sleeping Beauty: Fairy -Tale Revision And The Mid -Victorian Metaphysical Crisis., Cynthia Lynn Demarcus Jan 1999

Reawakening Sleeping Beauty: Fairy -Tale Revision And The Mid -Victorian Metaphysical Crisis., Cynthia Lynn Demarcus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Despite growing scholarly recognition of subversive social and political content in Victorian fairy tales, their significance in relation to the oft-cited Victorian "spiritual crisis" remains largely unexplored. This interdisciplinary study addresses that critical gap by examining three literary revisions of Sleeping Beauty from the early 1860s as pointed efforts to enter the intensified religious debate following the publication of Charles Darwin's Origin of the Species. The three revisions---Charles Dickens's novel Great Expectations (1860--61), Christina Rossetti's narrative poem "Goblin Market" (1862) and George MacDonald's fairy-tale "The Light Princess" (1864)---all appropriate the popular Sleeping Beauty narrative to create a vivid and emotionally …

Increasing Accuracy In Children's Verbal Self -Report Of Reinforcers., Gina Michelle Digiovanni Jan 1999

Increasing Accuracy In Children's Verbal Self -Report Of Reinforcers., Gina Michelle Digiovanni

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Several studies have examined the relationship between self-report of behavior and actual behavior (Baer, Williams, Osnes, & Stokes, 1985; Bernstein & Michael, 1990; Risley & Hart, 1968). Results from such studies indicate poor correspondence between verbal self-report and actual behavior. This finding is particularly true for children (Guevremont, Osnes, & Stokes, 1986). However, few studies have examined conditions under which the accuracy of self-report procedures can be increased. The current study evaluated whether the accuracy of children's verbal self-report of reinforcers could be increased by modifying antecedent conditions. Specifically, the current study examined the effects of two antecedent variables (i.e., …

Political Liberalization In Post -Communist Central Asia: A Comparative Study., Muhammad Islam Jan 1999

Political Liberalization In Post -Communist Central Asia: A Comparative Study., Muhammad Islam

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation seeks to explain variation in political liberalization among three post-communist Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. These countries share several common political outcomes such as the dominance of the executive and a high degree of statism. Yet they also witnessed significant variation in political liberalization within a short period of time after their independence in 1991. The fact that these countries share several common political, socioeconomic, cultural, and historical features makes the rise of this political variance more intriguing than the rise of the above, however, salient, common political outcomes among them within few years of their …

To Thine Own Self (And Thine Associates) Be True: The Strategic Management Of Competing Identities Among Academic Women., Shirley A. Keeton Jan 1999

To Thine Own Self (And Thine Associates) Be True: The Strategic Management Of Competing Identities Among Academic Women., Shirley A. Keeton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Social positions and social relationships are important in structuring self-concept. The self is often viewed as composed of identities related to the social positions an individual occupies. These identities are generally conceptualized as being organized hierarchically based on the individual's relative commitment to each. I contribute to this work by developing an Identity Management Model in which I propose three strategies (compartmentalization, amalgamation, and reprioritization) individuals use to manage completion among identities. In this model, I identify characteristics of (a) the identities, (b) the social environment and (c) the individual's social network that are likely to influence which strategy is …

Determination Of Consolidation Characteristics In Fine Soils Evaluated By Piezocone Tests., Beyongseock Lim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There has been an increasing trend to use the piezocone penetration test (PCPT) as an in situ tool of choice for determining the consolidation and flow characteristics of cohesive soils. The focus of this research is to study various factors that would affect the determination of consolidation characteristics in fine soils evaluated by piezocone tests. Immediate changes in excess pore pressure and tip resistance after penetration arrest for dissipation were experimentally identified. Undrained shear strength, influence of stress history, and lateral stress coefficient effects on the penetration pore pressure were investigated. By using a two-stage slurry consolidation technique, cohesive soil …

Flexural Creep Analysis Of Recycled Polymeric Structural Elements., Jose Noe Martinez-Guerrero Jan 1999

Flexural Creep Analysis Of Recycled Polymeric Structural Elements., Jose Noe Martinez-Guerrero

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A structural product made of recycled plastics in standard sections similar to dimensional lumber is referred to as plastic lumber. The recycled plastics used in the manufacture of these members include high density polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene. Plastic lumber is a viscoelastic material possessing mechanical properties that are time and temperature dependent. This structural product is currently used primarily in non-load-bearing and low-end structural applications because of the non availability of engineering data and concerns about its creep behavior. Creep, which is the time dependent deformation under constant stress, is high for plastic lumber and is temperature sensitive. A …

Unrestrained Women And Decadent Old Aristocrats: The Nineteenth-Century Middle Class Struggle For Cultural Hegemony., Ronald Hamilton May Jan 1999

Unrestrained Women And Decadent Old Aristocrats: The Nineteenth-Century Middle Class Struggle For Cultural Hegemony., Ronald Hamilton May

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines three popular novels of the Victorian period: W. G. M. Reynolds's Wagner, the Wehr-wolf (1846-7), Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret (1862), and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897). Each work was written during distinct decades of the nineteenth century when certain popular novels were under attack for rotting the minds of their readers, promoting vice, and subverting cultural standards. During the 1840s, when Reynolds's wrote Wagner, the Wehr-wolf , novels that were published in cheap penny weeklies created a sensation among mass readers. In the 1860s, when Braddon wrote Lady Audley's Secret, the sensation novel became popular with …

Parental Alcoholism And Children's Social Skills., Marsha Dean Norton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study focused on the daily interactions and home environments of 14 families with alcoholic fathers who were beginning primary treatment for their alcoholism. Data were collected by in-depth, face to face interviews with all family members. Social skills questionnaires administered to each child. Two specific family patterns were found to be associated with higher level social skills in children. First, father's frequent presence in the home, coupled with positive family interaction, was associated with children's high range social skills. Even in circumstances where violence existed, if the father was routinely at home and participated in positive family interactions, social …

Chicken Pax Atomica: The Impact Of Nuclear Weapons On Conflict Between Interstate Dyads., James Franklin Pasley Jan 1999

Chicken Pax Atomica: The Impact Of Nuclear Weapons On Conflict Between Interstate Dyads., James Franklin Pasley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nuclear weapons, long considered the bete noire of human existence are examined quantitatively and qualitatively in this dissertation to ascertain if the heinous effects they threaten ultimately serve to promote deterrence between pairs of states. The findings suggest that nuclear weapons do have a significant impact on conflict when present on both sides of a dyadic dispute. In such symmetrical nuclear pairs conflict levels are quantitatively shown to be reduced, suggesting that the conflict inhibiting qualities of these weapons long espoused by nuclear optimists are legitimate. Further evidence is presented in the form of a qualitative analysis of conflict between …

The Estimation Of Premorbid Intelligence: A Comparison Of Approaches., Peter Anthony Petito Jan 1999

The Estimation Of Premorbid Intelligence: A Comparison Of Approaches., Peter Anthony Petito

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Early methods to estimate premorbid intelligence focused on the use of the WAIS or WAIS-R IQ scores or selected WAIS or WAIS-R subtests. It was expected that performance on such tests would remain stable after a brain injury. As further research showed this belief was not valid, researchers turned to the use of other tests of current ability, one being a measure of reading ability known as the National Adult Reading Test (NART). A second approach focused on the relationship found between certain demographic variables and intelligence. More recently, researchers have employed an approach that combined present abilities performance and …

Synthesis, Thermodynamic Stability And Enzymic Behavior Of Oligonucleotides Containing Pyrazole Nucleobase Analogs., Andrea Sapp Saurage

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Non-hydrogen bonding nucleosides with iodo, nitro, propynyl and thiazolyl substituted at the 4-position of pyrazole were prepared. These nucleosides were converted to their corresponding nucleoside phosphoramidites and incorporated into a series of complementary oligonucleotides in order to determine the effect that varying size, charge distribution and polarizability has on duplex stability and structure. The self-complementary Dickerson dodecamer sequence 5'-CGCXAATTYGCG-3', as well as the non-self complementary sequence 5'-CAAAATGGTGGCCAAGT-3 ' previously investigated by Brown, were used to determine the duplex stabilization and thermodynamic consequences of placing 5-nitroindole and 4-substituted pyrazole nucleosides across from each natural base. In the pyrazole series, the largest …
