Anomalous Nmr Spin-Lattice Relaxation In Srb6 And Ca1-Xlaxb6, J. L. Gavilano, Sh Mushkolaj, D. Rau, H. R. Ott, A. Bianchi, D. P. Young, Z. Fisk Mar 2001

Anomalous Nmr Spin-Lattice Relaxation In Srb6 And Ca1-Xlaxb6, J. L. Gavilano, Sh Mushkolaj, D. Rau, H. R. Ott, A. Bianchi, D. P. Young, Z. Fisk

Faculty Publications

We report the results of 11B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of SrB6 and Ca0.995La0.005B6 below room temperature. Although the electrical resistivities of these two materials differ substantially, their 11B-NMR responses exhibit some strikingly common features. Both materials exhibit ferromagnetic order, but their 11B-NMR spectra reveal very small hyperfine fields at the boron sites. The spin-lattice relaxation T-11 varies considerably with external field but changes with temperature only below a few K. We discuss these unusual results by considering various different scenarios for the electronic structure of these materials. © 2001 The American Physical Society.

The Field Equation From Newton's Law Of Motion And The Absence Of Magnetic Monopole, Parampreet Singh, Naresh Dadhich Mar 2001

The Field Equation From Newton's Law Of Motion And The Absence Of Magnetic Monopole, Parampreet Singh, Naresh Dadhich

Faculty Publications

By requiring the linear differential operator in Newton's law of motion to be self adjoint, we obtain the field equation for the linear theory, which is the classical electrodynamics. In the process, we are also led to a fundamental universal chiral relation between electric and magnetic monopoles which implies that the two are related. Thus there could just exist only one kind of charge which is conventionally called electric.

Novel Transactivation Domain In Erythroid Kruppel-Like Factor (Eklf), Kumar Pandya, David Donze, Tim M. Townes Mar 2001

Novel Transactivation Domain In Erythroid Kruppel-Like Factor (Eklf), Kumar Pandya, David Donze, Tim M. Townes

Faculty Publications

Erythroid Kruppel-like Factor (EKLF) is an erythroid-specific transcription factor that plays a critical role in γ- to β-globin gene switching during development. To identify essential domains required for EKLF transactivation function, we cotransfected a human erythroleukemia cell line (K562) with a locus control region γ/Luc-β/Cat reporter and an EKLF expression vector. In this assay EKLF mediates a 500-fold induction of β/CAT expression compared with controls. To map essential transactivation domains, progressive NH2-terminal and internal deletion mutants of EKLF were constructed. All EKLF mutants were expressed at wild-type levels, localized to the nucleus, and bound DNA. When mutant EKLF proteins were …

Interferon-Γ-Induced Regulation Of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Γ And Stats In Adipocytes, Kyle J. Waite, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Patricia Arbour-Reily, Jacqueline M. Stephens Mar 2001

Interferon-Γ-Induced Regulation Of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Γ And Stats In Adipocytes, Kyle J. Waite, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Patricia Arbour-Reily, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) is known primarily for its roles in immunological responses but also has been shown to affect fat metabolism and adipocyte gene expression. To further investigate the effects of IFN-γ on fat cells, we examined the effects of this cytokine on the expression of adipocyte transcription factors in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Although IFN-γ regulated the expression of several adipocyte transcription factors, IFN-γ treatment resulted in a rapid reduction of both peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) protein and mRNA. A 48-h exposure to IFN-γ also resulted in a decrease of both CCAAT/enhancer-binding α and sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP-1) expression. The …

O'Er Land And Sea: Four-Volume History Of Civil War Leathernecks Now Complete, E. Rory O'Connor

Civil War Book Review

David M. Sullivan's lavishly illustrated series, The United States Marine Corps in the Civil War, is the first extensive history of the Corps during the 1860s. The author's main purpose is to show that, contrary to popular perceptions, marines fought in almost every area of operation and cond....

Man And Machine: Haunted Survivors Turn To Science For Postwar Redemption, Don Evans Mar 2001

Man And Machine: Haunted Survivors Turn To Science For Postwar Redemption, Don Evans

Civil War Book Review

Chris Adrian's debut novel Gob's Grief is not so much a book about the Civil War as it is about how people cope with the terrible loss and grief caused by the war. It is a book not of battles and generals, but of spirit voices, regret, and madness. A postwar America riven by social upheava....

Lincoln's Scribe: John Hay Grew In Office Serving A President He Revered, William D. Pederson

Civil War Book Review

Modern White House staffers are far removed from their original role as "passionate anonyms." Today they wield power once reserved for cabinet secretaries. Simultaneously, the number of employees in the White House has expanded from a handful during Lincoln's administration to several hundred. Yet s....

Solid And Steady': Cadmus Wilcox, Though Reliable And Brave, Still Eludes Fame, Theodore P. Savas

Civil War Book Review

Given Major General Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox's long and combat-rich command tenure with the Army of Northern Virginia, it is curious it took so long for someone to pen his biography. Except for First Manassas, Wilcox was in the thick of the fighting in virtually every major engagement in the Eastern ....
