Chromosomal Inversions And The Reproductive Isolation Of Species, M. A.F. Noor, K. L. Gratos, L. A. Bertucci, J. Reiland

Recent genetic studies have suggested that many genes contribute to differences between closely related species that prevent gene exchange, particularly hybrid male sterility and female species preferences. We have examined the genetic basis of hybrid sterility and female species preferences in Drosophila pseudoobscura and Drosophila persimilis, two occasionally hybridizing North American species. Contrary to findings in other species groups, very few regions of the genome were associated with these characters, and these regions are associated also with fixed arrangement differences (inversions) between these species. This report presents annual ownership cost estimates associated with sugarcane combine harvesters. Two primary types of annual machinery ownership costs are defined, and estimates of these costs are calculated using current combine harvester purchase prices.

The recent, widespread adoption of the variety LCP 85-384 has caused sugarcane producers in Louisiana to reevaluate the number of stubble crops to keep in production before plowing out and replanting. This report outlines a procedure that can be used to determine the optimal number of sugarcane stubble crops to keep in production with the goal of maximizing producer net returns.

The average extensive air shower longitudinal development profile is measured. Events between 1017 and 1018 eV recorded by the HiRes/MIA hybrid experiment are used for the average profile. Several functional forms are examined using this average profile. The best-fit parameters for the above functions are determined. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
