Private Stanley, I Presume?': An Intrepid British Adventurer Soldiered For Both Sides, Alec Hasenson

Civil War Book Review

Many volunteers from the British Isles, whatever their motives, took sides in the American Civil War. One of these was Henry Morton Stanley, who became famous largely as a result of his later adventures in Africa, and the books he wrote about the Dark Continent. He chronicled his wartime experiences....

Time-Varying Mortgage Prepayment Penalties, Austin Kelly, V. Carlos Slawson Dec 2001

Time-Varying Mortgage Prepayment Penalties, Austin Kelly, V. Carlos Slawson

Faculty Publications

Recent empirical findings reveal that prepayment decisions of commercial property owners are slower than predicted by the pure options-pricing model (OPM). Borrower decisions appearing slow, however, may be quite rational when prepayment penalties of a time-varying nature are incorporated into the OPM. This article uses a competing risks OPM, adjusted for each of four different categories of prepayment penalties, to analyze borrower prepayment behavior. We find the value of delaying prepayment is often higher for mortgages with declining-rate penalties than for mortgages with static-rate penalties, frequently requiring a substantially higher interest rate spread to trigger a refinance. Multifamily loan prepayment …

The Valuation Effects Of Initiations And Terminations Of Joint Ventures, Tomas Mantecon Prieto Dec 2001

The Valuation Effects Of Initiations And Terminations Of Joint Ventures, Tomas Mantecon Prieto

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the valuation effects of initiations and terminations of joint ventures formed by two partners.

The evidence indicates that there is an increase in value for both partners at joint venture initiations and that these gains are greater for small partners than for the large partners. The pattern of the gains to partners is consistent with the certification value of the inter-corporate relationship intrinsic to a joint venture. Moreover, an analysis of the operating performance after the initiation of joint ventures indicates that there is no significant improvement in operating performance of the partner firms relative to benchmark …

Burnside's Gamble: Fredericksburg Account 'Summarizes A Familiar Story', Robert K. Krick

Civil War Book Review

Through most of the Civil War's campaigns in the Virginia Theater, Fredericksburg held a position near center stage. The opposing capital cities of Washington and Richmond lay equidistant on either side; wagon roads converged in town; a major river flowed past; and a railroad crossed the river in do....

End Of The Road: Sherman Was Tenacious, But Johnston Was The Better Negotiator, Peter S. Carmichael

Civil War Book Review

In the popular imagination, the image of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant amicably discussing surrender terms in William McLean's parlor on April 9, 1865, symbolizes the end of the Civil War. The subsequent proceedings at Bennett Place, North Carolina, have often been an obscure footnote to the st....

Desperate Courage': Griswoldville's Lopsided Outcome Signaled The Confederacy's End, Albert Castel

Civil War Book Review

Judging by the total number of troops involved (no more than 4,000), the casualties for both sides (fewer than 700), and its strategic significance (none at all), the clash that took place near Griswoldville, Georgia, in November 1864 was not a battle, but merely a minor engagement. Yet Griswoldv....

Polymyxin-resistant mutants of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium accumulate a novel minor lipid that can donate 4-amino-4-deoxy-L-arabinose units (L-Ara4N) to lipid A. We now report the purification of this lipid from a pss- pmrAC mutant of E. coli and assign its structure as undecaprenyl phosphate-α-L-Ara4N. Approximately 0.2 mg of homogeneous material was isolated from an 8-liter culture by solvent extraction, followed by chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, C18 reverse phase resin, and silicic acid. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight mass spectrometry in the negative mode yielded a single species [M - H]- at m/z 977.5, consistent with undecaprenyl phosphate-α-L-Ara4N (Mr = …

High-Pressure Elastic Properties Of Major Materials Of Earth's Mantle From First Principles, Bijaya B. Karki, Lars Stixrude, Renata M. Wentzcovitch Nov 2001

High-Pressure Elastic Properties Of Major Materials Of Earth's Mantle From First Principles, Bijaya B. Karki, Lars Stixrude, Renata M. Wentzcovitch

Faculty Publications

The elasticity of materials is important for our understanding of processes ranging from brittle failure, to flexure, to the propagation of elastic waves. Seismologically revealed structure of the Earth's mantle, including the radial (one-dimensional) profile, lateral heterogeneity, and anisotropy are determined largely by the elasticity of the materials that make up this region. Despite its importance to geophysics, our knowledge of the elasticity of potentially relevant mineral phases at conditions typical of the Earth's mantle is still limited: Measuring the elastic constants at elevated pressure-temperature conditions in the laboratory remains a major challenge. Over the past several years, another approach …

Long-Slit Observations Of Extended C Ii Λ1335 Emission Around V854 Centauri And Ry Sagittarii, G. C. Clayton, T. R. Ayres Oct 2001

Long-Slit Observations Of Extended C Ii Λ1335 Emission Around V854 Centauri And Ry Sagittarii, G. C. Clayton, T. R. Ayres

Faculty Publications

We have obtained long-slit far-ultraviolet (1150-1730 Å) spectra of the R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars V854 Cen and RY Sgr near maximum light and pulsational phase zero with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The far-UV spectrum of each star shows a photospheric continuum rising steeply toward longer wavelengths and a prominent emission feature at C II λ1335. RY Sgr displays a second, but fainter, emission attributed to Cl I λ1351 (which is radiatively fluoresced by C II λ1335), but Cl I is weak or absent in V854 Cen. Most surprisingly, the C II emission …

Deformations Of The Fermion Realization Of The Sp(4) Algebra And Its Subalgebras, K. D. Sviratcheva, A. I. Georgieva, V. G. Gueorguiev, J. P. Draayer, M. I. Ivanov

Faculty Publications

With a view towards future applications in nuclear physics, the fermion realization of the compact symplectic sp(4) algebra and its q-deformed versions are investigated. Three important reduction chains of the sp(4) algebra are explored in both the classical and deformed cases. The deformed realizations are based on distinct deformations of the fermion creation and annihilation operators. For the primary reduction, the su(2) substructure can be interpreted as either the spin, isospin or angular momentum algebra, whereas for the other two reductions su(2) can be associated with pairing between fermions of the same type or pairing between two distinct fermion types. …

Origin Of Lateral Variation Of Seismic Wave Velocities And Density In The Deep Mantle, Shun Ichiro Karato, Bijaya B. Karki Oct 2001

Origin Of Lateral Variation Of Seismic Wave Velocities And Density In The Deep Mantle, Shun Ichiro Karato, Bijaya B. Karki

Faculty Publications

Strong constraints can be placed on the origin of heterogeneity of seismic wave velocities and density if the observed ratios of various parameters are compared with mineral physics predictions. They include the shear to compressional wave velocity heterogeneity ratio, R ≡ δ log V / δ log V , the bulk sound to shear wave velocity heterogeneity ratio, R ≡ δ log V / δ log V , and the density to velocity heterogeneity ratio, R ≡ δ log ρ / δ log V . Using mineral physics considerations, we calculate these ratios in the lower mantle corresponding to the …

Readout And Control Of A Power-Recycled Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Antenna, Peter Fritschel, Rolf Bork, Gabriela González, Nergis Mavalvala, Dale Ouimette, Haisheng Rong, Daniel Sigg, Michael Zucker Oct 2001

Readout And Control Of A Power-Recycled Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Antenna, Peter Fritschel, Rolf Bork, Gabriela González, Nergis Mavalvala, Dale Ouimette, Haisheng Rong, Daniel Sigg, Michael Zucker

Faculty Publications

Interferometric gravitational-wave antennas are based on Michelson interferometers whose sensitivity to small differential length changes has been enhanced by the addition of multiple coupled optical resonators. The use of optical cavities is essential for reaching the required sensitivity but sets challenges for the control system, which must maintain the cavities near resonance. The goal for the strain sensitivity of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) is 10-21 rms, integrated over a 100-Hz bandwidth centered at 150 Hz. We present the major design features of the LIGO length and frequency sensing and control system, which will hold the differential length to …
