Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 5 And Calcium Signaling In Retinal Amacrine Cells, Romina Sosa, Brian Hoffpauir, Michele L. Rankin, Richard C. Bruch, Evanna L. Gleason

Faculty Publications

To begin to understand the modulatory role of glutamate in the inner retina, we examined the mechanisms underlying metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5)-dependent Ca2+ elevations in cultured GABAergic amacrine cells. A partial sequence of chicken retinal mGluR5 encompassing intracellular loops 2 and 3 suggests that it can couple to both Gq and Gs. Selective activation of mGluR5 stimulated Ca2+ elevations that varied in waveform from cell to cell. Experiments using high external K+ revealed that the mGluR5-dependent Ca2+ elevations are distinctive in amplitude and time course from those engendered by depolarization. Experiments with a Ca2+-free external solution demonstrated that the …

Element Ratios And Aquatic Food Webs, R. Eugene Turner Aug 2002

Element Ratios And Aquatic Food Webs, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Organic matter is the result of concentrating a few non-metals that are relatively rare in the earth’s crust. Most of these essential elements are in a rough proportionality within phylogenetic groupings. Life is thus working against a concentration gradient to extract or accumulate these elements, and this metabolic work is accomplished in interrelated and often subtle ways for many other elements. The physiological requirement to sustain these elemental ratios (commonly discussed in terms of the N∶P ratios, but also C∶N, C∶P, and Si∶N ratios) constrains organization at the cellular, organism, and community level. Humans, as geochemical engineers, significantly influence the …

Echoes In X-Ray Binaries, K. O'Brien, Keith Horne, R. I. Hynes, W. Chen, C. A. Haswell, M. D. Still

Faculty Publications

We present a method of analysing the correlated X-ray and optical/UV variability in X-ray binaries, using the observed time delays between the X-ray driving light curves and their reprocessed optical echoes. This allows us to determine the distribution of reprocessing sites within the binary. We model the time-delay transfer functions by simulating the distribution of reprocessing regions, using geometrical and binary parameters. We construct best-fitting time-delay transfer functions, showing the regions in the binary responsible for the reprocessing of X-rays. We have applied this model to observations of the soft X-ray transient GRO J1655-40. We find that the optical variability …

Application Of The New Vanishing Interfacial Tension Technique To Evaluate Miscibility Conditions For The Terra Nova Offshore Project, Dandina N. Rao, J. I. Lee Aug 2002

Application Of The New Vanishing Interfacial Tension Technique To Evaluate Miscibility Conditions For The Terra Nova Offshore Project, Dandina N. Rao, J. I. Lee

Faculty Publications

Terra Nova oil pool is the second largest oil pool discovered in the Grand Banks of the Canadian East Coast and is under development. As a part of the oil recovery process selection criteria, miscibility conditions were determined for Terra Nova oil with various enrichment levels of gas available from the offshore production facilities using the recently developed vanishing interfacial tension (VIT) technique. The VIT technique is based on the concept that the interfacial tension between the gas and crude oil phases at reservoir temperature must reduce to zero as these two phases approach the point of miscibility. The concept …

Analysis And Classification Of Nonlinear Dispersive Evolution Equations In The Potential Representation, U. A. Eichmann, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer Jul 2002

Analysis And Classification Of Nonlinear Dispersive Evolution Equations In The Potential Representation, U. A. Eichmann, A. Ludu, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

A potential representation for the subset of travelling solutions of nonlinear dispersive evolution equations is introduced. The procedure involves reduction of a third-order partial differential equation to a first-order ordinary differential equation. The potential representation allows us to deduce certain properties of the solutions without the actual need to solve the underlying evolution equation. In particular, the paper deals with the so-called K(n, m) equations. Starting from their respective potential representations it is shown that these equations can be classified according to a simple point transformation. As a result, e.g., all equations with linear dispersion join the same equivalence class …

Efficacy Of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibition In Reducing Progression From Asymptomatic Left Ventricular Dysfunction To Symptomatic Heart Failure In Black And White Patients, Daniel L. Dries, Mark H. Strong, Richard S. Cooper, Mark H. Drazner

Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to determine whether enalapril had comparable efficacy in black and white patients with asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction (ALVD) in preventing the development of symptomatic heart failure (HF). BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that black patients with HF due to systolic dysfunction may derive less benefit than white patients with HF when treated with the same medication. METHODS: This is a post hoc analysis of the 4,054 black and white participants of the Studies of Left Ventricular Dysfunction Prevention Trial. RESULTS: Randomization to enalapril was associated with a comparable reduction in the relative risk of the …

We present the results of our monitoring of the halo black hole soft X-ray transient (SXT) XTE J1118+480 during its decline to quiescence. The system has decayed 0.5 mag from 2000 December to its present near-quiescent level at R ≃ 18.65 (2001 June). The ellipsoidal light curve is distorted by an additional modulation that we interpret as a superhump of Psh = 0.17049(1) d i.e. 0.3 per cent longer than the orbital period. This implies a disc precession period Pprec ∼ 52 d. After correcting the average phase-folded light curve for veiling, the amplitude difference between the minima suggests that …

Charged current scattering of νμ, on 12C has been studied using a π+ decay-in-flight νμ beam at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. A sample of 66.9±9.1 events satisfying criteria for the exclusive reaction 12 C(νμ,μ-)12Ng.s. was obtained using a large liquid scintillator neutrino detector. The observed flux-averaged cross section (5.6±0.8±1.0) × 10-41 cm2 agrees well with reliable theoretical expectations. A measurement was also obtained for the inclusive cross section to all accessible 12N states 12C(νμ,μ-)X. This flux-averaged cross section is (10.6±0.3±1.8) × 10-40 cm2 which is lower than present theoretical calculations.

Relaxation Through Homogenization For Optimal Design Problems With Gradient Constraints, R. Lipton Jul 2002

Relaxation Through Homogenization For Optimal Design Problems With Gradient Constraints, R. Lipton

Faculty Publications

The problem of the relaxation of optimal design problems for multiphase composite structures in the presence of constraints on the gradient of the state variable is addressed. A relaxed formulation for the problem is given in the presence of either a finite or infinite number of constraints. The relaxed formulation is used to identify minimizing sequences of configurations of phases.

Magnetic Field Induced Charge And Spin Instabilities In Cuprate Superconductors, M. Franz, D. E. Sheehy, Z. Tešanović Jun 2002

Magnetic Field Induced Charge And Spin Instabilities In Cuprate Superconductors, M. Franz, D. E. Sheehy, Z. Tešanović

Faculty Publications

A quantum electrodynamics (QED3) was presented in a box theory for field-induced spin and charge instabilities in cuprates, driven by local fluctuations of a pinned vortex. A d-wave superconductor suffered an antiferromagnetic (AF) instability closely related to the chiral symmetry breaking in (2+1)-dimensional QED3. Neutron scattering and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) experiments revealed the presence of local AF and charge order in the vicinity of field-induced vortices. Direct experimental evidence showed that individual vortices underwent significant quantum fluctuations.

Haplotype-based methods offer a powerful approach to disease gene mapping, based on the association between causal mutations and the ancestral haplotypes on which they arose. As part of The SNP Consortium Allele Frequency Projects, we characterized haplotype patterns across 51 autosomal regions (spanning 13 megabases of the human genome) in samples from Africa, Europe, and Asia. We show that the human genome can be parsed objectively into haplotype blocks; sizable regions over which there is little evidence for historical recombination and within which only a few common haplotypes are observed. The boundaries of blocks and specific haplotypes they contain are …

We synthesized key findings from the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, the world's largest and longest-running experimental study of habitat fragmentation. Although initially designed to assess the influence of fragment area on Amazonian biotas, the project has yielded insights that go far beyond the original scope of the study. Results suggest that edge effects play a key role in fragment dynamics, that the matrix has a major influence on fragment connectivity and functioning, and that many Amazonian species avoid even small (<100-m-wide) clearings. The effects of fragmentation are highly eclectic, altering species richness and abundances, species invasions, forest dynamics, the trophic structure of communities, and a variety of ecological and ecosystem processes. Moreover, forest fragmentation appears to interact synergistically with ecological changes such as hunting, fires, and logging, collectively posing an even greater threat to the rainforest biota.

On Interval Clutters, Guoli Ding Jun 2002

On Interval Clutters, Guoli Ding

Faculty Publications

A hypergraph is an interval hypergraph if its vertices can be linearly ordered so that all its edges are consecutive sets. Interval hypergraphs have been characterized by Tucker (J. Combin. Theory 12 (1972) 153) in terms of excluded subhypergraphs. In this paper, we strengthen Tucker's result for clutters by characterizing interval clutters in terms of excluded partial clutters, as well as excluded minors. Since minor and partial clutter relations are much more restrictive than the subhypergraph relation, our results are more applicable than Tucker's result in, many situations. As a lemma, we also determine all the minor minimal clutters that …

What Are The Hot R Coronae Borealis Stars?, Orsola De Marco, Geoffrey C. Clayton, F. Herwig, D. L. Pollacco, J. S. Clark, David Kilkenny

Faculty Publications

We investigate the evolutionary status of four stars: V348 Sgr, DY Cen, and MV Sgr in the Galaxy and HV 2671 in the LMC. These stars have in common random deep declines in visual brightness, which are characteristic of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. RCB stars are typically cool hydrogen-deficient supergiants. The four stars studied in this paper are hotter (Teff = 15-20 kK) than the majority of RCB stars (Teff = 5000-7000 K). Although these are commonly grouped together as the hot RCB stars they do not necessarily share a common evolutionary history. We present new observational data and …
