Chromatin Of Endoreduplicated Pavement Cells Has Greater Range Of Movement Than That Of Diploid Guard Cells In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Naohiro Kato, Eric Lam Jun 2003

Chromatin Of Endoreduplicated Pavement Cells Has Greater Range Of Movement Than That Of Diploid Guard Cells In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Naohiro Kato, Eric Lam

Faculty Publications

In the current model of chromatin organization in the interphase cell nucleus, chromosomes are organized into territories. Although constrained diffusion of chromatin in interphase cells has been confirmed in all cell types examined, little is known about chromatin dynamics in plant interphase cells. In this work, we measured for the first time interphase chromatin dynamics in plants using the green-fluorescent-protein-mediated chromatin-tagging system. Moreover, we compared the dynamics of diploid guard cells and endoreduplicated pavement cells. The movement of tagged loci in live seedlings shows constrained behavior in both types of nuclei. However, we found that the apparent confinement area for …

Predicting Severe Wildfire Years In The Florida Everglades, Brian Beckage, William J. Platt Jun 2003

Predicting Severe Wildfire Years In The Florida Everglades, Brian Beckage, William J. Platt

Faculty Publications

© 2003 The Ecological Society of America. Wildfires result in important ecological benefits to many ecosystems, but have costs associated with fire fighting and property loss. Accurate, timely forecasts of the severity of upcoming wildfire seasons could facilitate wildfire management, limiting the most destructive aspects of fires, while preserving their ecological benefits. We demonstrate an approach where time series models are used to predict the severity of the wildfire season in Everglades National Park in southern Florida 3 months and 1 year beforehand. Model predictions contained all obserations within a 90% credible interval and also anticipated severe wildfire seasons. These …

An Algebraic Pairing Model With Sp(4) Symmetry And Its Deformation, K. D. Sviratcheva, A. I. Georgieva, J. P. Draayer Jun 2003

An Algebraic Pairing Model With Sp(4) Symmetry And Its Deformation, K. D. Sviratcheva, A. I. Georgieva, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

A fermion realization of the compact symplectic sp(4) algebra provides a natural framework for studying isovector-pairing correlations in nuclei. While these correlations manifest themselves most clearly in the binding energies of 0+ ground states, they also have a large effect on the energies of excited states, including especially excited 0+ states. In this paper, we consider nondeformed as well as deformed algebraic descriptions of pairing through the reductions of sp(q)(4) to different realizations of u(q)(2) for single-j and multi-j orbitals. The model yields a classification scheme for completely paired 0+ states of even-even and odd-odd nuclei in the 1d3/2, 1f7/2 …

Wigner Distribution Function Approach To Dissipative Problems In Quantum Mechanics With Emphasis On Decoherence And Measurement Theory, R. F. O'Connell Jun 2003

Wigner Distribution Function Approach To Dissipative Problems In Quantum Mechanics With Emphasis On Decoherence And Measurement Theory, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

We first review the usefulness of the Wigner distribution functions (WDFs), associated with Lindblad and pre-master equations, for analysing a host of problems in quantum optics where dissipation plays a major role, an arena where weak coupling and long-time approximations are valid. However, we also show their limitations for the discussion of decoherence, which is generally a short-time phenomenon with decay rates typically much smaller than typical dissipative decay rates. We discuss two approaches to the problem both of which use a quantum Langevin equation as a starting-point: (a) use of a reduced WDF but in the context of an …

Comparing Regeneration Techniques For Afforesting Previously Farmed Bottomland Hardwood Sites In The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Usa, Brian Roy Lockhart, Bob Keeland, John Mccoy, Thomas J. Dean

Faculty Publications

A study was implemented to test site preparation methods and artificial regeneration of three oak (Quercus spp.) species on four agricultural fields in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley in Louisiana, USA. Six years after establishment, few consistent differences were found in oak density between sowing acorn methods (seed drill versus broadcast seeding), autumn sowing versus spring sowing, and sowing acorns versus planting oak seedlings. Results indicated that some degree of site preparation is needed to establish oak seedlings but few differences were found between site preparation treatments. These results indicate that no one prescription for oak regeneration fits all potential …

Assessment Of The Local Stress State Through Macroscopic Variables, Robert P. Lipton May 2003

Assessment Of The Local Stress State Through Macroscopic Variables, Robert P. Lipton

Faculty Publications

Macroscopic quantities beyond effective elastic tensors are presented that can be used to assess the local state of stress within a composite in the linear elastic regime. These are presented in a general homogenization context. It is shown that the gradient of the effective elastic property can be used to develop a lower bound on the maximum pointwise equivalent stress in the fine-scale limit. Upper bounds are more sensitive and are correlated with the distribution of states of the equivalent stress in the fine-scale limit. The upper bounds are given in terms of the macrostress modulation function. This function gauges …

Localization Of Gravity In Brane World Cosmologies, Parampreet Singh, Naresh Dadhich May 2003

Localization Of Gravity In Brane World Cosmologies, Parampreet Singh, Naresh Dadhich

Faculty Publications

The most remarkable and interesting feature of brane world scenario is the use of bulk's curvature to localize gravity on the brane, albeit with fine tuning of the brane and bulk parameters. For FRW expanding universe on the brane, it is a moving hypersurface in Schwarzschild anti de Sitter bulk spacetime. We show that zero mass gravitons have bound state on the brane for suitable values of brane and bulk parameters. There occur various cases giving rise to different cosmological models, in particular we discuss a model with positive cosmological constant on the brane.

Employing the maximum entropy method (MEM) algorithm, we fit interstellar extinction measurements that span the wavelength range 0.125-3 μm. We present a uniform set of MEM model fits, all using the same grain materials, optical constants, and abundance constraints. In addition, we are taking advantage of improved UV and IR data and better estimates of the gas-to-dust ratio. The model fits cover the entire range of extinction properties that have been seen in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. The grain models employed for this presentation are the simplistic homogeneous sphere models (i.e., those of Mathis, Rumpl, & Nordsieck in …

High Affinity Ligand Binding By Integrins Does Not Involve Head Separation, Bing Hao Luo, Timothy A. Springer, Junichi Takagi May 2003

High Affinity Ligand Binding By Integrins Does Not Involve Head Separation, Bing Hao Luo, Timothy A. Springer, Junichi Takagi

Faculty Publications

Conformational change in the integrin extracellular domain is required for high affinity ligand binding and is also involved in post-ligand binding cellular signaling. Although there is evidence to the contrary, electron microscopic studies showing that ligand binding triggers α- and β-subunit dissociation in the integrin head-piece have gained popularity and support the hypothesis that head separation activates integrins. To test directly the head separation hypothesis, we enforced head association by introducing disulfide bonds across the interface between the α-subunit β-propeller domain and the β-subunit I-like domain. Basal and activation-dependent ligand binding by αIIbβ3 and αVβ3 was unaffected. The covalent linkage …
