A Menagerie Of Symmetry Testing Quantum Algorithms, Margarite Lynn Laborde Apr 2023

A Menagerie Of Symmetry Testing Quantum Algorithms, Margarite Lynn Laborde

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In Chapter 1, we establish the mathematical background used throughout this thesis. We review concepts from group and representation theory. We further establish fundamental concepts from quantum information. This will allow us to then define the different notions of symmetry necessary in the following chapters. In Chapter 2, we investigate Hamiltonian symmetries. We propose quantum algorithms capable of testing whether a Hamiltonian exhibits symmetry with respect to a group. Furthermore, we show that this algorithm is that this algorithm is DQC1-Complete. Finally, we execute one of our symmetry-testing algorithms on existing quantum computers for simple examples. In Chapter 3, we …

The Global Transcription Factor Fur Is Activated By Binding A [2fe-2s] Cluster To Maintain Iron Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli, Chelsey Rene Fontenot Apr 2023

The Global Transcription Factor Fur Is Activated By Binding A [2fe-2s] Cluster To Maintain Iron Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli, Chelsey Rene Fontenot

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Iron is an essential element for biological functions. Organisms have developed specific mechanisms to acquire, store, and export iron to manage intracellular iron homeostasis. These mechanisms are crucial not only for providing the cells with adequate iron for biological processes but also for ensuring that cells are not overloaded with excess iron, which is highly toxic. The Ferric uptake regulator (Fur) is a global transcription factor for maintaining intracellular iron homeostasis in bacteria. Previously, it was postulated that when the intracellular iron content is elevated, Fur binds ferrous iron to down-regulate the iron acquisition genes and up- regulate the iron …

The Regulation Of Autoimmunity Genes In Pancreatic Β-Cells By Nf-Κb, Thomas Malone Martin Apr 2023

The Regulation Of Autoimmunity Genes In Pancreatic Β-Cells By Nf-Κb, Thomas Malone Martin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease where the immune system targets the pancreatic islet beta-cells, which are responsible for insulin production and secretion, leading to a state of insulin insufficiency. Many of the molecular details of disease onset and progression remain poorly understood, including key aspects of cytokine signaling. Therefore, we have examined some of the consequences of inflammatory cytokine signaling as a critical module relevant to T1D. Using interleukin-1 (IL-1) signaling as a well-defined paradigm for inflammation, we investigated key components of this signaling pathway in pancreatic beta-cells. We identified ICAM-1, one of the proteins expressed in …

Examining The Impact Of Different Street Lighting Schemes On Traffic Safety And Drivers’ Behaviors At Unsignalized Intersections, Hisham Mohamed Abdu Kunnah

LSU Master's Theses

Lack of visibility is one of the main challenges that significantly impact drivers’ ability to safely perform driving tasks at night especially at unsignalized intersections. Several prior studies indicated that lighting enhances nighttime traffic safety. Nevertheless, lighting is not mandatory at unsignalized intersections in many states including Louisiana. This study aimed to investigate if lack of lighting is a contributing factor that affects traffic safety at unsignalized intersections in Louisiana. In addition, this study strived to identify current lighting policies adopted by other states, examine if there are any low-cost countermeasures implemented by other states to improve nighttime visibility, and …

Evaluation Of Reproductive Phenology, Space Use, And Ecology Of The Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo Silvestris) In West-Central Louisiana, Chad Argabright Apr 2023

Evaluation Of Reproductive Phenology, Space Use, And Ecology Of The Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo Silvestris) In West-Central Louisiana, Chad Argabright

LSU Master's Theses

Nest site selection is a driving demographic force behind eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) populations. However, previous research was likely not focused on the actual time of nest site selection, considering that nest site selection is likely only able to occur on the day of the first egg being laid. My objective was to determine if selection for any vegetation characteristics was occurring on the first day of laying. I estimated the path taken from the roost to the nest on the first day of egg laying (i.e., laying path) using GPS data collected from 164 unique …

Evaluating Fungal Population Response To The Miocene Climatic Optimum: High-Resolution Palynological Insights From The South China Sea And Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, Mallory Pilie

LSU Master's Theses

Fungi play key and specific roles in ecosystems, specifically as many have restricted geographic distributions, known host/substrate preferences, and are important local environmental indicators due to their short dispersal distances. This study of fossil fungi from a time interval of pronounced global warming, the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO), allows analysis of fungal response to an analogue for future climate change scenarios. The research presented herein is part of a larger project, Fungi in a Warmer World (FiaWW), which is using globally-distributed sediment samples to provide foundational information on fungal community distribution patterns and will provide the first fungi-based climatological reconstructions …

An Analysis Of Hurricane Laura's Storm Surge In Cameron Parish Using Synthetic Storm Tracks, Climatology, And Statistics, Cameron Goff

LSU Master's Theses

Cameron Parish is a large coastal parish in southwest Louisiana that has been impacted by several powerful tropical cyclones. In 2020, the strongest hurricane in recorded history to ever hit this region, Hurricane Laura, set a state record for the highest storm surge measurement at 6.34 meters. I examine the climatology of tropical cyclone landfalls in this parish, looking for trends in intensity and frequency with time. I then compare the extreme surge of Hurricane Laura with a dataset of 645 synthetic tropical cyclones generated and used by the Coastal Hazards System for Louisiana. Plots comparing various meteorological statistics to …

20-Year Assessment Of Total Suspended Sediment (Tss) Variability In Barataria Bay From Modis Ocean Color Using A Combination Of Adaptive Semi-Analytical And Neural Network Algorithms, Bijaylaxmi Sahoo Apr 2023

20-Year Assessment Of Total Suspended Sediment (Tss) Variability In Barataria Bay From Modis Ocean Color Using A Combination Of Adaptive Semi-Analytical And Neural Network Algorithms, Bijaylaxmi Sahoo

LSU Master's Theses

Barataria Bay, a hydrologically dynamic basin in the northern Gulf of Mexico, exhibits a distinct spatio-temporal distribution of total suspended sediment (TSS). However, studies on sediment distribution are limited by availability of in-situ data as well as the limitation of ocean color algorithms for suspended sediments in shallow optically complex waters. Barataria Bay TSS concentration profile is complex, influenced in the upper basin by fresh water sources such as the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion, and in the lower bay by the river plume and marine influence near the mouth of the bay. To efficiently study the sediment dynamics in the …

Neurocognitive Models Of Anxious Apprehension And Emotion Regulation: Implications For Working Memory, Paul Spano Apr 2023

Neurocognitive Models Of Anxious Apprehension And Emotion Regulation: Implications For Working Memory, Paul Spano

LSU Master's Theses

Children and adolescents with internalizing disorders, such as generalized anxiety and major depression, often experience functional impairment across multiple domains that exacerbates psychopathology. Working memory is a cognitive process that has been scrutinized for its ubiquity in daily life, its strong association with academic success, and its susceptibility to interference from internalizing symptoms, such as a depressed mood or anxious apprehension. However, the literature on the relationship between youth internalizing symptoms and working memory span is sparse, and existing research is confounded by a lack of theoretical clarity and, consequently, incomparable procedures. The present study aims to clarify this relationship …

The Influence Of Native Language And Sentence Form On Memory Of Motion Events, Stephanie L. Lopez Apr 2023

The Influence Of Native Language And Sentence Form On Memory Of Motion Events, Stephanie L. Lopez

LSU Master's Theses

This study utilized four experiments to investigate the extent to which native language influences memory in accordance with linguistic relativity. In Experiment 1, monolingual English speakers and Spanish/English bilinguals were divided into a verbal encoding condition and a verbal suppression encoding condition and watched motion events of low or high physical salience. Participants engaged in a recognition memory task followed by an event memory similarity judgment task. In Experiment 2, native monolingual English speakers were divided into an English-like (or manner-on-verb) description group, a Spanish-like (or path-on-verb) description group, mimicking the language groups of Experiment 1 respectively, and a verbal …

Beyond Compulsion: Félix Ravaisson's Conception Of Habit, Christopher Johnson Apr 2023

Beyond Compulsion: Félix Ravaisson's Conception Of Habit, Christopher Johnson

LSU Master's Theses

In opposition to a tendency present within the history of Western philosophy to regard ‘habit’ as a conservative force (represented by figures including Descartes, Spinoza, and Kant), contemporary philosophers working on habit (including Clare Carlisle and Catherine Malabou) have marshaled the thought of nineteenth century French philosopher Félix Ravaisson. With recourse to the ‘double law of habit,’ Ravaisson, in his 1838 doctoral thesis, depicts habit as both resistance and receptivity to change. I begin, in Chapter One, with a brief overview of the aforementioned negative evaluations of habit, as surveyed separately by Carlisle and Malabou. As these contemporary philosophers observe, …

Numerical Flume For Wave Dissipation By Mangrove Prop Roots, Rebecca L. Schurr Apr 2023

Numerical Flume For Wave Dissipation By Mangrove Prop Roots, Rebecca L. Schurr

LSU Master's Theses

Mangroves provide shorelines with many beneficial engineering services, including shoreline stabilization, wave attenuation, and damage mitigation during tsunami or tropical cyclone events. This research focuses on wave attenuation rates and drag coefficients, and how they are affected by mangrove prop roots. Previous lab research using a physical wave flume has quantified wave height decay and drag coefficients for synthetic mangrove forests and confirmed that attenuation does indeed increase as mangrove forest density increases. This research will use a 3D numerical flume model developed in Proteus, a Python package, to simulate prior physical model experiments. This work will attempt to validate …

The Hillman Site (16ebr60): A Glimpse Into Pre-Contact South Louisiana, Brandy Kerr

LSU Master's Theses

Situated along the north bank of Bayou Manchac lies the pre- and post-contact Hillman site, 16EBR60. First discovered in 1960 by the landowner, George Menefee, the site was subsequently investigated by Louisiana State University archaeologist Dr. William Haag, who pronounced the site a Marksville village, due to the large number of lithic tools recovered from the site. Subsequent investigations at the site by Surveys Unlimited Research Associates, Inc. (SURA) in 2021 confirmed the Marksville component of the site and found occupation continued into the succeeding Troyville and Coles Creek cultures. The principal research questions asked include: (1) How does the …

Cannabis Use Across The Menstrual Cycle: The Impact Of Negative Affect And Coping Motives, Paige Morris Apr 2023

Cannabis Use Across The Menstrual Cycle: The Impact Of Negative Affect And Coping Motives, Paige Morris

LSU Master's Theses

Women appear to use more cannabis during the premenstrual and menstrual phases of the menstrual cycle, presumably because women use cannabis to manage increases in negative affect associated with these phases. Yet little work has tested this hypothesis or examined individual difference variables associated with greater coping-motivated cannabis use. The current study tested whether state negative affect interacts with coping motives to predict greater cannabis use during the premenstrual and/or menstrual phases and whether trait anxiety or difficulties with emotion regulation moderate these relations. Female undergraduate students with regular monthly menstrual cycles and who were not using hormonal contraceptives ( …

Times Of Crisis: A Comparative Discourse Analysis Of U.S. And Mexican Presidential Rhetoric, Kassandra Gonzalez-Ramos

LSU Master's Theses

Language is a communicative tool that in the possession of politicians holds the power to be persuasive and aggressive, empowering and uniting, or disruptive and dividing. Previous research has relied on numerous methodological approaches to analyze political discourse from different viewpoints to reveal the manner in which politicians as part of political institutions transform and manipulate language. The current investigation performs a critical discourse analysis (CDA) based on the framework developed by Van Dijk (1993,1997) in order to demonstrate the speech act realization in a total of 14 political speeches delivered by American presidents Biden, Trump, and Obama and Mexican …

The Social Support Experiences Of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) Adults, Lindsay A. Duede, Colter Ray Apr 2023

The Social Support Experiences Of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) Adults, Lindsay A. Duede, Colter Ray

LSU Master's Theses

Social support researchers commonly recognize that support is most useful when it matches the needs and desires of those receiving it. Yet, the majority of research regarding attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and social support frames questions of communication competence by placing neurodiverse communities at odds with neurotypical ones. This practice reinforces a hierarchy in which neurotypical individuals are viewed as correct and deviations from that norm as failures. Individuals with ADHD experience emotions differently than those without it; thus, it stands to reason that people with ADHD could have different needs and desires for support. Therefore, this study has two key …

Performance Anxiety In Young Musicians: A Case Study Of Music Educators' Experiences, Carmen L. Rodriguez Apr 2023

Performance Anxiety In Young Musicians: A Case Study Of Music Educators' Experiences, Carmen L. Rodriguez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Anxiety is a common emotional reaction in musicians that can negatively influence their performance. Some studies have proved that Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) can be found not only in adults but also in adolescents and children from 3 years old. Since MPA is a significant aspect of musicians’ development, it is essential that music educators take preventive action against MPA in young musicians, specifically under 18 years old. The purpose of this study is to examine the strategies used by music educators to address MPA in young musicians. Educators were interviewed regarding musical performance anxiety and its presence within their …

The Non-Apprehension Of Selfhood And Metaphysical Freedom, Christopher Rinderle Apr 2023

The Non-Apprehension Of Selfhood And Metaphysical Freedom, Christopher Rinderle

LSU Master's Theses

In this work I take on one of the most axiomatic assumptions humans possess. The sense of self is embedded so deeply inside each one of us that to question it seems utterly ridiculous. Fortunately, I do not outright reject the notion of selfhood. I investigate what it is and is not through multiple angles – ancient and contemporary – which leads to investigations of free will and responsibility.

In the first chapter, I discuss the Buddhist anātman or non-self. I argue that the historical Buddha did not endorse the idea that the self must be overcome through enlightenment – …

Evaluating The Pesticide-Induced Outbreak Of Soybean Looper, Chrysodeixis Includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), In Louisiana Soybean, Scott Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker), has established itself as the primary lepidopteran defoliator in Midsouth soybean agroecosystems. Pesticide-induced outbreak events associated with this pest have been observed by soybean producers. The insecticides believed to prompt these incidents are routinely used for the control of other co-occuring pests, such as stink bugs. Outbreak conditions present soybean producers with conflicting management decisions for pests. Laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments were conducted to provide a better understanding of insecticide usage impact on populations of C. includens and the arthropod community. To discern the potential mechanisms behind C. includens outbreak, a baseline for the …

Characterizing Marr Homologs That Mediate Bacterial Fitness And Survival, George Chukwuemeka Nwokocha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Plant disease outbreaks are on the rise, threatening food security in many parts of the globe. To address these enormous challenges, new intervention strategies like bio-controls are being used as an important sustainable alternative to mitigate the negative effects of pathogens and increase the quality and productivity of agricultural crops. MarR family transcriptional regulators have been studied for their involvement in regulating bacterial virulence genes that help colonize plant hosts and therefore could serve as targets for biocontrol. The transcriptional regulator PecS, a member of the MarR family, is encoded by select bacterial pathogens and we show here that PecS …

Essays On The Economics Of Health And Education, Thao Bui Apr 2023

Essays On The Economics Of Health And Education, Thao Bui

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three chapters on the economics of health and education. In Chapter 2, I examine the effect of prenatal exposure to Agent Orange, a dioxin- contaminated herbicide that was dispersed on a large scale in South Vietnam for military operations during the Vietnam War, on educational attainment of Vietnamese civilians. The identification strategy exploits province-by-cohort variation in the intensity of Agent Orange sprayed. I find that controlling for conventional bombing, cohorts exposed in utero to Agent Orange (who were born between 1962 and 1971) have lower educational attainment compared to other birth cohorts. The same inference is …

Domain Specific Analysis Of Privacy Practices And Concerns In The Mobile Application Market, Fahimeh Ebrahimi Meymand

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mobile applications (apps) constantly demand access to sensitive user information in exchange for more personalized services. These-mostly unjustified-data collection tactics have raised major privacy concerns among mobile app users. Existing research on mobile app privacy aims to identify these concerns, expose apps with malicious data collection practices, assess the quality of apps' privacy policies, and propose automated solutions for privacy leak detection and prevention. However, existing solutions are generic, frequently missing the contextual characteristics of different application domains. To address these limitations, in this dissertation, we study privacy in the app store at a domain level. Our objective is to …

Effects Of Task-Switching On Proactive Control And Metamemory Regulation, Jessica Hacker Apr 2023

Effects Of Task-Switching On Proactive Control And Metamemory Regulation, Jessica Hacker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Past researchers have proposed a relationship between cognitive control and metamemory and several studies have provided the most support for a relationship between task-switching and metamemory regulation. Nevertheless, the evidence has been correlational. To my knowledge, the present study was the first to include an experimental manipulation incorporating a dual-task that required task-switching within a feeling of knowing (FOK) paradigm to directly observe the effects of task-switching on FOK accuracy. Research on cognitive control has demonstrated that engaging in proactive cognitive control typically leads to better performance in cognitive tasks and that young adults are naturally biased to engage in …

Dose Calculation And Prediction Methods For Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Payton Hayes Stone Apr 2023

Dose Calculation And Prediction Methods For Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Payton Hayes Stone

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Implementation of automation routines leveraging deep learning (DL) methods has been a growing topic of interest. The focus of this work is on the Gamma Knife (GK) workflow, specifically the approximation of dose distributions from GK plan parameters and the prediction of dose distributions using DL. These works contribute towards the larger goal of treatment plan prediction and are seen as intermediate steps towards that end. The approximation of dose distributions was motivated by the closed nature of the GK system, which causes complications with the evaluation of the predictions made by the DL models. The approximation utilizes a superposition …

The Abolitionist Spectator: Resistant Readings Of Punishment, Rehabilitation, And Reform At The Louisiana State Penitentiary, Kathryn Marie Morris

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

For the majority of the twenty-first century, Louisiana has been the global leader in rates of incarceration. Despite its prevalence, many people encounter prisons and punishment only through representations in movies, television, and the news, remaining distant from the actual processes of punishment and prisons built in remote areas. The Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, however, is unique in the number of opportunities it presents for the public to enter the prison for large-scale events like the famous Angola Prison Rodeo, select drama club performances, or to visit the Angola Prison Museum. These opportunities are often read cynically, as moments …
