Adaptive Quantum Information Processing In Non-Equilibrium Environments, Arshag Danageozian
Adaptive Quantum Information Processing In Non-Equilibrium Environments, Arshag Danageozian
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Solid state and condensed matter systems, such as diamond impurities, superconductors, quantum dots, and ion traps, constitute important physical platforms for various applications in quantum information processing (QIP). However, it has consistently been shown that all such modern platforms suffer from non-equilibrium behavior on timescales that are relevant for many important QIP tasks. The causes range from intrinsic non-equilibrium dynamics (e.g. in diamond) to the presence of various impurities with their own internal dynamics (e.g. in superconductors and quantum dots) or variations in the control fields used to stabilize the quantum matter (e.g. in ion traps). When reserving degrees of …
Femme Fatale In Lieder: Songs Of Lorelei By Clara Schumann, Franz Liszt, And Alexander Zemlinsky, Eun Chong Kang
Femme Fatale In Lieder: Songs Of Lorelei By Clara Schumann, Franz Liszt, And Alexander Zemlinsky, Eun Chong Kang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The femme fatale, a seductive and dangerous woman, is a popular archetype found in literature, art, and music. In German literature, the character of Lorelei is a well-known example of the femme fatale. She is associated with a steep rock cliff on the Rhine River and, from the cliff, convicted of bewitching men resulting in their murder. This written document focuses on Lorelei as the femme fatale character in German literature as seen in three musical settings by composers Clara Schumann, Franz Liszt, and Alexander Zemlinsky. The document also includes limited musical analyses of and singer’s commentary on …

Through this project, the author hopes to shed light on the beauty and richness of Asian Art Music and encourage its inclusion in the repertoire of American classical music. The purpose of this document is to supply a comprehensive performer’s guide to Malaysian composer, Chee Yean Wong’s song collections: “Mementos of Innocence” and “Three Yeats Songs.” The collections feature settings of English poems by Jean Blewett, Christina Rossetti, Edwin C. Ranck, Rabindranath Tagore, and William Butler …
Phase Transitions And Magnetocaloric Effects In Metastable Phases Of Intermetallic Compounds, Tej Bahadur Poudel Chhetri
Phase Transitions And Magnetocaloric Effects In Metastable Phases Of Intermetallic Compounds, Tej Bahadur Poudel Chhetri
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The interplay between spin and lattice degrees of freedom in magnetic materials often results in interesting magnetoresponsive effects. The magnetocaloric effect is one such magnetothermal phenomenon that may be utilized in energy-efficient magnetic cooling systems. This effect becomes more prominent near a coupling of magnetic and structural transitions, i.e., magnetostructural transitions (MSTs). This dissertation investigates phase transitions (magnetic and structural) in metastable phases of MnNiGe- and MnCoGe-based compounds generated through high-pressure synthesis/annealing and thermal quenching techniques and assesses their magnetocaloric effects.
First, the effects of doping, hydrostatic pressure, and thermal quenching on phase transitions and related magnetocaloric effects in Mn …

In the pursuit of student success, it is essential to acknowledge that a singular teaching style does not universally cater to all students. The educator's crucial role lies in creating an optimal learning environment that fosters students' endeavors to excel. This endeavor transcends mere classroom success or employment prospects, encompassing a broader impact on societal well-being. An experiential learning approach, where students actively engage in practical tasks, emerges as the most effective mode of instruction. Integrating project-based learning activities into the curriculum holds immense potential for enhancing student learning. Additionally, the utilization of analysis software tools like FTool and STAAD …

The activity coefficients of ions in polymeric ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) dictate the equilibrium partitioning coefficient of the ions between the membrane and the liquid. It also affects ion transport processes, such as conductivity, in ion-exchange membranes. Accurately predicting the ion activity coefficient without experimental data has been elusive as most models are empirical or semi-empirical. This work employs an embedding process that maps microscopic and macroscopic properties for modeling of ion activity coefficients in IEMs with molecular dynamics (MD) and machine learning (ML). This strategy is effective for accurately predicting activity coefficients in various IEM materials, including random copolymer and …
Reasoning The Voice: Toward A Diagnostic And Prescriptive Technique In The Teaching Of Singing, Carlos E. Santelli
Reasoning The Voice: Toward A Diagnostic And Prescriptive Technique In The Teaching Of Singing, Carlos E. Santelli
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Voice pedagogy literature often draws a parallel between a doctor’s ability to diagnose illness and prescribe treatment, and a voice teacher’s ability to identify vocal obstacles and design solutions. The core of these parallel procedures lies in an ability to utilize critical reasoning skills within highly specific contexts. Medical literature describes this as “clinical reasoning” and has studied it as a learned process. Voice pedagogy literature has traditionally described this as an innate process which is solely developed through experience. This document broadly examines the ways in which medical literature has broken down clinical reasoning into specific cognitive processes and …
Further Refinement Of An Asd-Subscale For The Childhood Behavior Checklist, Kimberly Ellison
Further Refinement Of An Asd-Subscale For The Childhood Behavior Checklist, Kimberly Ellison
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is tied to receiving the earliest possible intervention services that can influence a child’s development (Filipek et al., 1999). There are different measurement tools utilized to aid in the diagnostic assessment process, including broadband behavioral rating scales. The Childhood Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2001) is a parent/caregiver completed questionnaire about one’s child (typically or atypically developing). The CBCL is one of the most utilized broadband measures at the initial stages of a diagnostic assessment or screening to aid in understanding the symptom presentation (Hyman et al., 2020). Currently, there …

The direct effects of nuclear war would be horrific, with blasts, fires, and radiation killing and injuring many people. But in 1983, United States and Soviet Union scientists showed that a nuclear war could also produce a nuclear winter, with catastrophic consequences for global food supplies for people far removed from the conflict. Smoke from fires ignited by nuclear weapons exploded on cities and industrial targets would block out sunlight, causing dark, cold, and dry surface conditions, producing a nuclear winter, with surface temperatures below freezing even in summer for years. Nuclear winter theory helped to end the nuclear arms …

Algorithm 1035: A Gradient-Based Implementation Of The Polyhedral Active Set Algorithm, William W. Hager, Hongchao Zhang
Faculty Publications
The Polyhedral Active Set Algorithm (PASA) is designed to optimize a general nonlinear function over a polyhedron. Phase one of the algorithm is a nonmonotone gradient projection algorithm, while phase two is an active set algorithm that explores faces of the constraint polyhedron. A gradient-based implementation is presented, where a projected version of the conjugate gradient algorithm is employed in phase two. Asymptotically, only phase two is performed. Comparisons are given with IPOPT using polyhedral-constrained problems from CUTEst and the Maros/Meszaros quadratic programming test set.

Patients with autosomal recessive microcephaly 15 caused by deficiency in the sodium-dependent lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) transporter major facilitator superfamily domain–containing 2a (Mfsd2a) present with both microcephaly and hypomyelination, suggesting an important role for LPC uptake by oligodendrocytes in the process of myelination. Here we demonstrate that Mfsd2a is specifically expressed in oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) and is critical for oligodendrocyte development. Single-cell sequencing of the oligodendrocyte lineage revealed that OPCs from OPC-specific Mfsd2a-KO mice (2aOKO mice) underwent precocious differentiation into immature oligodendrocytes and impaired maturation into myelinating oligodendrocytes, correlating with postnatal brain hypomyelination. 2aOKO mice did not exhibit microcephaly, a finding …

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) present an opportunity to bridge the gap between the intermittent availability of green energy sources and the need for on-demand grid level energy storage. While aqueous vanadium-based redox flow batteries have been commercialized, they are limited by the constraints of using water as an electrochemical solvent. Nonaqueous redox flow battery systems can be used to produce high voltage batteries due to the larger electrochemical window in nonaqueous solvents and the ability to tune the redox properties of active materials through functionalization. Iron porphyrins, a class of organometallic macrocycles, have been the subject of many studies for …

Tectonic Advection Of Contacts Enhances Landscape Transience, Nate Mitchell, Adam M. Forte
Faculty Publications
Contrasts in bedrock erodibility have been shown to drive landscape transience, but it is unclear whether horizontal tectonic displacements would enhance such effects. Furthermore, one might expect these factors to coexist, as tectonic convergence helps to create rock strength contrasts in settings like the Himalayas. How do landscapes respond when contacts separating units are raised vertically and shifted horizontally by tectonics? To evaluate such questions, we use landscape evolution models to simulate the exposure of a weak unit in a landscape equilibrated to a strong unit. We explore different simulations varying factors like weak unit erodibility, diffusivity, contact dip, and …

A series of Cr-containing hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H:Cr) coatings were deposited onto 316 stainless steel (316SS) substrates using inductively coupled plasma assisted reactive sputter deposition. Elemental Cr interlayers with different thicknesses of 100, 200, and 300 nm were deposited between a-C:H:Cr and 316SS. Detailed composition, structure, and mechanical behavior characterization of deposited a-C:H:Cr/Cr/316SS specimens were performed. Fracture toughness values of the a-C:H:Cr layer, the Cr layer, and the a-C:H:Cr/Cr/316SS interfacial regions were measured by bending of microcantilever beams with focused ion beam milled pre-notches in-situ a scanning electron microscope. Measured fracture toughness of a-C:H:Cr/Cr/316SS interfacial regions exhibits an approximately linear …
Simulations Of Intruder-Free X-Ray Transient Absorption And Time-Resolved X-Ray Scattering For Probing Attosecond Electron Dynamics, Mengqi Yang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The motion of electrons plays a fundamental role in both physics and chemistry, and capturing such dynamics requires the ability to resolve changes at the attosecond timescale, which is enabled by the advent of ultrashort laser pulses. This dissertation aims to facilitate the interpretation of ultrafast electron dynamics and attosecond spectroscopy by real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) simulations. The first part of this dissertation focuses on improving the simulation of X-ray transient absorption spectra (XTAS) with Gaussian basis sets in RT-TDDFT by applying a filter to the transition dipole matrix. Due to the spatial limitation of atom-centered Gaussian functions, …
Pathways To Blunted Facial Affect In Negative Schizotypy: Social Motivation And Online Cognitive Resources, Tovah M.D. Cowan
Pathways To Blunted Facial Affect In Negative Schizotypy: Social Motivation And Online Cognitive Resources, Tovah M.D. Cowan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Schizotypy, a range of personality traits which confer liability for schizophrenia, is associated with significantly diminished social functioning and quality of life. Social dysfunction in all forms of schizotypy, including schizophrenia, is connected to blunted affect, or diminished expressivity, particularly facial expressions which are less frequent, intense, or long than typical. However, the mechanisms and treatments for blunted affect are, as yet, poorly understood and underdeveloped. In this project, two putative mechanisms of blunted affect were explored. The first involves cognitive load capacities, which are diminished in schizotypy, causing blunted affect – individuals do not have the cognitive resources to …

Cycles And Dynamic Correlations Between Agricultural And Stock Markets, Junior E. Betanco Gunera
Cycles And Dynamic Correlations Between Agricultural And Stock Markets, Junior E. Betanco Gunera
LSU Master's Theses
This study conducts two interrelated econometric analyses; it first analyzes the cyclical relationship between stock and commodity markets and second, it studies the dynamic conditional correlation between them. The cyclical analysis uses the bandpass filter proposed by Christiano-Fitzgerald (2003) to isolate the trend component in the long-run relationship of stocks relative to commodity markets. The results show that stock and commodities have alternated in return leadership nine times during the last 151 years, three full cycles (from peak to peak) can be clearly identified, each one with an average duration of 31 years. While the COVID-19 pandemic had little impact …
A Comparison Of Self-Report Measures To Screen For Mental Health Concerns In Youth, Jacob Landon Deboer
A Comparison Of Self-Report Measures To Screen For Mental Health Concerns In Youth, Jacob Landon Deboer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Proactive screening for treatable conditions is not a new concept. Instead, screening has been present in the United States since at least the early 1900s. Accordingly, many schools actively screen for academic problems, yet the same attention is not paid to mental health. Past research estimates that one out of five children in the U.S. has a mental health disorder. However, recent research conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic has found these numbers to be increasing. Additional estimates suggest that only one-third of children with a mental health disorder receive treatment. Schools have a role to play in addressing the identification …

Active colloids use energy input at the particle level to propel persistent motion and direct dynamic assemblies. We consider three types of colloids animated by chemical reactions, time-varying magnetic fields, and electric currents. For each type, we review the basic propulsion mechanisms at the particle level and discuss their consequences for collective behaviors in particle ensembles. These microscopic systems provide useful experimental models of nonequilibrium many-body physics in which dissipative currents break time-reversal symmetry. Freed from the constraints of thermodynamic equilibrium, active colloids assemble to form materials that move, reconfigure, heal, and adapt. Colloidal machines based on engineered particles and …

We demonstrate that for polyethylene depolymerization with induction heating (IH), using a bifunctional (Pt- or Pt− Sn-containing zeolite) hydrocracking catalyst, we can obtain high hydrocarbon product yields (up to 95 wt % in 2 h) at a relatively low surface temperature (375 °C) and with a tunable product distribution ranging from light gas products to gasoline- to diesel-range hydrocarbons. Four zeolite types [MFI, LTL, CHA(SSZ-13), and TON] were chosen as the supports due to their varying pore sizes and structures. These depolymerization results are obtained at atmospheric pressure and without the use of H2 and result in an alkane/alkene mixture …
