Broadband Switchable Infrared Absorbers Using Phase-Change Materials, M. Tanvir Emrose, Emily L. Payne, Chenglong You, Georgios Veronis

Faculty Publications

We introduce multilayer structures with the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) for use as broadband switchable absorbers in the infrared wavelength range. We optimize both the material composition and the layer thicknesses of the multilayer structures, in order to maximize the difference between the absorption for GST in its crystalline phase and the absorption for GST in its amorphous phase in the wavelength range of interest. We show that in the optimized structures near perfect absorption can be switched to very low absorption in a broad wavelength range by switching GST from its crystalline to its amorphous phase. Our optimized lithography-free …

Optimal Querying For Communication-Efficient Admm Using Gaussian Process Regression, Aldo Duarte, Truong X. Nghiem, Shuangqing Wei

Faculty Publications

In distributed optimization schemes consisting of a group of agents connected to a central coordinator, the optimization algorithm often involves the agents solving private local sub-problems and exchanging data frequently with the coordinator to solve the global distributed problem. In those cases, the query-response mechanism usually causes excessive communication costs to the system, necessitating communication reduction in scenarios where communication is costly. Integrating Gaussian processes (GP) as a learning component to the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) has proven effective in learning each agent's local proximal operator to reduce the required communication exchange. A key element for integrating GP …

A Simplified Model For The Study Of Film-Boiling Droplet Motion On Microscale Ratchets, Sheldon Wang, Jeong Tae Ok, Sunggook Park, Mahmoud Elsharafi, Yu Guo

Faculty Publications

In this work, we explore a simplified model based on both analytical and computational methods for the study of film-boiling droplet motion on microscale ratchets. We consider a specific ratchet design with the length periods and depth of ratchets much smaller than the size of the droplet. We conclude based on our modeling that for the ratchet configuration considered in this paper, the conduction within the vapor film is the dominant means of heat transfer in comparison with convection and radiation. Furthermore, we demonstrate a more manageable two-dimensional model in which analytical approaches coupled with computational approaches yield reasonably accurate …

Humanitarian Watchdogs: The Impact Of Humanitarian Aid On State Behavior, Kevin David Bradley Feb 2024

Humanitarian Watchdogs: The Impact Of Humanitarian Aid On State Behavior, Kevin David Bradley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Does the delivery of humanitarian aid outside the control of the state increase repressive practices by the government and harm the population? Concerns over the unintended negative impacts of humanitarian aid continues to drive research and spirited debate by scholars, policy makers, and practitioners. Although several contend humanitarians serve as “watchdogs” and constrain repression by their presence in a country, whether they do this, the methods employed, and the scope of impact has not been theoretically or empirically addressed. The watchdog theory proposes that the presence of humanitarian international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) generates information about the disaster, the actions of …

Producing Digital Reflections Of Reality Through Intercultural Filmmaking And Multisensory Engagement, Trai Thomas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the author’s production of three intercultural, multisensory films situated in New Orleans, encompassing elements both narrative and documentary genres. Intercultural cinema exists in a setting where people of different cultural backgrounds live together in power-inflicted spaces of diaspora, colonialism, and cultural apartheid and the development of the story is centered around exoticism, fetishization, and fascination with the other (Marks 2007, 1). Multisensory media primarily engages through visual perception and auditory input, which create cultural knowledge stored as long-term memory files in the brain (Marks 2007).

Molecular motors (MM) are molecular machines, or nanomachines, that rotate unidirectionally upon photostimulation and perform mechanical work on their environment. In the last several years, it has been shown that the photomechanical action of MM can be used to permeabilize lipid bilayers, thereby killing cancer cells and pathogenic microorganisms and controlling cell signaling. The work contributes to a growing acknowledgement that the molecular actuation characteristic of these systems is useful for various applications in biology. However, the mechanical effects of molecular motion on biological materials are difficult to disentangle from photodynamic and photothermal action, which are also present when a …
