Modes Of Weather System-Induced Flows Through An Arctic Lagoon, Chunyan Li, Wei Huang, Changsheng Chen, Kevin M. Boswell, Renhao Wu

Faculty Publications

With the increasing warming of the Arctic, the summertime ice-free period in the coastal Arctic becomes longer and the water exchange between arctic lagoons and coastal Beaufort Sea becomes more important for land–ocean interaction. This study examined the dynamics of water exchange between the arctic lagoons and the Arctic Ocean under the influence of weather systems (the transient arctic cyclones and hovering Beaufort High pressure system). We implemented rare observations, numerical modeling with the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM), and a forcing-response Empirical Orthogonal Function (fr-EOF) analysis to determine the weather-driven flow patterns and characteristics in the micro-tidal arctic …

Mitochondria are essential for survival and as such, impairments in organelle homeostasis significantly accelerate age-related morbidity and mortality. Here, we determined the contribution of bioenergetic efficiency to life span and health span in Drosophila melanogaster utilizing the mitochondrial uncoupler BAM15. Life span was determined in flies fed a normal diet (ND) or high fat diet (HFD) supplemented with vehicle or BAM15. Locomotor function was determined by negative geotaxis assay in middle-aged flies fed vehicle or BAM15 under ND or HFD conditions. Redox capacity (high-resolution respirometry/fluorometry), citrate synthase (enzyme activity), mtDNA content (qPCR), gene expression (qPCR), and protein expression (western blot) …

Faculty Publications

Ligustrum spp. (Oleaceae) have become invasive species in the US and negatively affect native plant diversity and richness in forests. Ochyromera ligustri (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is considered a potential biological control agent in the US because adults feed on the foliage and larvae are seed-feeders of Ligustrum spp. To discover the relationships between O. ligustri and Ligustrum spp., fruit dissections or rearing and field observations are required. In the current research project, novel PCR primers were developed to rapidly detect the DNA of O. ligustri in molecular analyses without rearing and observation. The developed PCR primers worked even with 0.01 ng …

Clear Speech Effects In Production Of Sentence-Medial Mandarin Lexical Tonesa), Jack Rittenberry, Irina A. Shport

Faculty Publications

Adding to limited research on clear speech in tone languages, productions of Mandarin lexical tones were examined in pentasyllabic sentences. Fourteen participants read sentences imagining a hard-of-hearing addressee or a friend in a casual social setting. Tones produced in clear speech had longer duration, higher intensity, and larger F0 values. This style effect was rarely modulated by tone, preceding tonal context, or syllable position, consistent with an overall signal enhancement strategy. Possible evidence for tone enhancement was observed only in one set of analysis for F0 minimum and F0 range, contrasting tones with low targets and tones with high targets.

Sexual Orientation-Based Microaggressions And Cannabis Use Outcomes Among Sexual Minority Individuals: The Impact Of Negative Affect And Coping-Motivated Cannabis Use, Evan M. Threeton, Paige E. Morris, Julia D. Buckner

Faculty Publications

Introduction: Sexual minority individuals report significantly more cannabis use and problems than their heterosexual peers, possibly due to their frequent experiences with sexual orientation-based microaggressions. As a result, sexual minority individuals may turn to cannabis use to cope with the negative affect associated with these experiences. No known studies have tested this hypothesis; therefore, the current study tested if sexual orientation microaggressions are positively associated with negative affect (anxiety and depression), cannabis coping motives, and cannabis-related outcomes (frequency, problems); if coping motives are positively associated with cannabis-related outcomes; and if negative affect and cannabis use to cope with negative affect …

Increasing Duration Of Heatwaves Poses A Threat To Oyster Sustainability In The Gulf Of Mexico, Jeffrey D. Plumlee, Sean P. Powers, David L. Kimbro, John C. Lehrter, Jason Herrmann, John Mareska

Faculty Publications

The future of the wild oyster fishery in the northern Gulf of Mexico is largely uncertain due to changing environmental conditions and declining abundance of harvestable oysters. Specifically, rising temperatures can directly impact the physiological thresholds of the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) at all life history stages and alter the narrow ecological niche this oyster occupies. The impact of rising temperatures is likely most pronounced during atmospheric heatwaves, defined as three or more days above the 90th percentile of daily maximum air temperatures, which have been shown to be increasing in frequency. Increasing exposure to high temperature extremes may contribute …

Song And Genetic Divergence Within A Subspecies Of White-Crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia Leucophrys Nuttalli), Amy Rongyan Luo, Sara Lipshutz, Jennifer Phillips, Robb T. Brumfield, Elizabeth Perrault Derryberry

Faculty Publications

Animal culture evolves alongside genomes, and the two modes of inheritance-culture and genes-interact in myriad ways. For example, stable geographic variation in culture can act as a reproductive barrier, thereby facilitating genetic divergence between "cultural populations."White-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys) are a well-established model species for bird song learning and cultural evolution, as they have distinct, geographically discrete, and culturally transmitted song types (i.e., song dialects). In this study, we tested the hypothesis that divergence between culturally transmitted songs drives genetic divergence within Nuttall's white-crowned sparrows (Z. l. nuttalli). In accordance with sexual selection theory, we hypothesized that cultural divergence between …

Neutron star (NS) mergers where both stars have negligible spins are commonly considered as the most likely 'standard' case. In globular clusters, however, the majority of NSs have been spun up to millisecond (ms) periods and, based on observed systems, we estimate that a non-negligible fraction of all double NS mergers () contains one component with a spin of a (few) ms. We use the Lagrangian numerical relativity code SPHINCS_BSSN to simulate mergers where one star has no spin and the other has a dimensionless spin parameter of χ = 0.5. Such mergers exhibit several distinct signatures compared to irrotational …

Model species continue to underpin groundbreaking plant science research. At the same time, the phylogenetic resolution of the land plant tree of life continues to improve. The intersection of these 2 research paths creates a unique opportunity to further extend the usefulness of model species across larger taxonomic groups. Here we promote the utility of the Arabidopsis thaliana model species, especially the ability to connect its genetic and functional resources, to species across the entire Brassicales order. We focus on the utility of using genomics and phylogenomics to bridge the evolution and diversification of several traits across the Brassicales to …

Aim: Biotic interchanges between Africa, India, and Eurasia are central to explaining the present-day distribution and diversity of freshwater organisms across these landmasses. Synbranchiformes is a diverse and species-rich clade of freshwater acanthomorph fishes found on all southern continents except Antarctica, and include eel- and perch-like, air-breathing and non-air-breathing fishes. Lacking a comprehensive and resolved phylogeny of the entire clade, contemporary interpretations of synbranchiform biogeography invoke scenarios as disparate as Gondwanan vicariance and pan-global rafting to explain their modern-day distribution. Here, we study their biogeographic history of continental dispersal events and test whether these are associated with increases in lineage …

Why and how organismal lineages radiate is commonly studied through either assessing abiotic factors (biogeography, geomorphological processes, and climate) or biotic factors (traits and interactions). Despite increasing awareness that both abiotic and biotic processes may have important joint effects on diversification dynamics, few attempts have been made to quantify the relative importance and timing of these factors, and their potentially interlinked direct and indirect effects, on lineage diversification. We here combine assessments of historical biogeography, geomorphology, climatic niche, vegetative, and floral trait evolution to test whether these factors jointly, or in isolation, explain diversification dynamics of a Neotropical plant clade …
