Anderson Localization For The Unitary Almost Mathieu Operator, Fan Yang
Anderson Localization For The Unitary Almost Mathieu Operator, Fan Yang
Faculty Publications
We prove Anderson localization for all Diophantine frequencies and all non-resonant phases for a model that arises from a 2D quantum walk model subject to an external magnetic field, also known as the unitary almost Mathieu operator. Our work provides the first localization results for all Diophantine frequencies in quasi-periodic quantum walk and CMV matrix setting. We also obtain sharp asymptotics of the localized eigenfunctions.

Background/Objectives: Sickle cell disease (SCD) impacts about 100,000 people in the US. SCD increases the risk of cholelithiasis and microvascular ischemia, which could increase the risk of acute pancreatitis (AP). Abdominal pain is a common presenting symptom of AP and sickle cell vaso-occlusive crisis. The purpose of our systematic review is to estimate the prevalence and determine the severity of AP in individuals with SCD compared to the general population. Methods: Multiple electronic databases were searched. We included studies that included children and adults (population) and addressed the association of SCD (exposure) with AP (outcome) compared to the same population …

The United States had one of the worst outcomes in the management of COVID-19 risk, with a death rate in the 94th percentile of all countries. Setting aside the obvious politicized nature of COVID-19 public health recommendations and mandates, we argue that best practices in financial risk management provide parallels that could have served as valuable guidance. We demonstrate here that considerable signals were missed that would have required very little effort and would have been consistent with sound risk management. We also identify examples of misleading information such as that COVID-19 was particularly hard on the elderly. The data …

Learning Nonlinear Dynamics In Synchronization Of Knowledge-Based Leader-Following Networks, Shimin Wang, Xiangyu Meng, Hongwei Zhang, Frank L. Lewis
Learning Nonlinear Dynamics In Synchronization Of Knowledge-Based Leader-Following Networks, Shimin Wang, Xiangyu Meng, Hongwei Zhang, Frank L. Lewis

Knowledge-based leader-following synchronization of heterogeneous nonlinear multi-agent systems is a challenging problem since the leader's dynamic information is unknown to any follower node. This paper proposes a learning-based fully distributed observer for a class of nonlinear leader systems, which can simultaneously learn the leader's dynamics and states. This class of leader dynamics is rather general and does not require a bounded Jacobian matrix. Based on this learning-based distributed observer, we further synthesize an adaptive distributed control law for solving the leader-following synchronization problem of multiple Euler–Lagrange systems subject to an uncertain nonlinear leader system. The results are illustrated by a …

Physics simulation results of natural processes usually do not fully capture the real world. This is caused for instance by limits in what physical processes are simulated and to what accuracy. In this work we propose and analyze the use of an LSTM-based deep learning network machine learning (ML) architecture for capturing and predicting the behavior of the systemic error for storm tide forecast models with respect to real-world water elevation observations from gauge stations during hurricane events. The overall goal of this work is to predict the systemic error of the physics model and use it to improve the …

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a malignant Grade VI cancer type with a median survival duration of only 8–16 months. Earlier detection of GBM could enable more effective treatment. Hyperpolarized magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HPMRS) could detect GBM earlier than conventional anatomical MRI in glioblastoma murine models. We further investigated whether artificial intelligence (A.I.) could detect GBM earlier than HPMRS. We developed a deep learning model that combines multiple modalities of cancer data to predict tumor progression, assess treatment effects, and to reconstruct in vivo metabolomic information from ex vivo data. Our model can detect GBM progression two weeks earlier than conventional MRIs …

Antioxidant therapies are of interest in the prevention and management of ocular disorders such as cataracts. Although an active area of interest, topical therapy with antioxidants for the treatment of cataracts is complicated by multiple ocular anatomical barriers, product stability, and solubility. Entrapment and delivery of antioxidants with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles is a possible solution to these challenges, however, little is known regarding their effects in vitro or in vivo. Our first aim was to investigate the impact of blank and lutein loaded PLGA nanoparticles on viability and development of reactive oxygen species in lens epithelial cells in vitro. Photo-oxidative …

Composted materials serve as an effective soil nutrient amendment. Organic matter in compost plays an important role in quantifying composted materials overall quality and nutrient content. Measuring organic matter content traditionally takes considerable time, resources, and various laboratory equipment (e.g., oven, muffle furnace, crucibles, precision balance). Much like the quantitative color indices (e.g., sRGB R, sRGB G, sRGB B, CIEL*a* b*) derived from the low-cost NixPro2 color sensor have proven adept at predicting soil organic matter in-situ, the NixPro2 color sensor has the potential to be effective for predicting organic matter in composted materials without the need for traditional laboratory …
Development Of Cyclic Scb Test For Evaluating Fatigue Cracking Resistance Of Asphalt Mixture At Intermediate Temperature, Ye Ma
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Asphalt pavements are subjected to premature cracking due to traffic loading and environmental effects. The Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) test has been traditionally conducted in a monotonic, displacement-controlled mode at intermediate temperature to assess the fatigue crack resistance of asphalt mixtures. However, fatigue damage is essentially deterioration in material integrity as a result of repeated loading. This study aims to develop a cyclic SCB test to characterize the fatigue cracking properties of asphalt mixture utilizing Paris’ Law model. A secondary goal is to apply the Paris’ Law coefficients measured from the developed cyclic SCB test in predicting the fatigue life of …
Empirical Distribution Functions For Farmland Derivative Stocks, Shaharia Jaman Bhuiyan
Empirical Distribution Functions For Farmland Derivative Stocks, Shaharia Jaman Bhuiyan
LSU Master's Theses
Abstract
This thesis investigates the statistical distribution functions fit for modeling the returns of farmland derivative stocks and financial market indexes. Farmland derivative stocks have garnered increased interest due to their potential use in portfolio diversification and risk management. Financial asset returns can be characterized by higher moment behavior in the underlying statistical distribution. This implies that in assessing the statistical distribution properties of risks, proper consideration must be given to the choice of functional form. The Generalized Lambda Distribution (GLD) is used due to its flexibility in model various distribution functions.
The dataset comprises daily and monthly log returns …
Constraining Giant Planet Occurrence Rates With The Multi-Band Imaging Survey For High-Alpha Planets (Mishaps) Observations Of 47 Tucanae, Alison Crisp
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Though the confirmed exoplanet population has now reached over 5,500 planets, we still have a plethora of unanswered questions, e.g., regarding their formation mechanisms, true demographics, occurrence rates, and habitability. One remaining question is whether hot Jupiters formed in situ or migrated to their current orbits, so close to their host stars that their periods are 10 days or less. This question can potentially be answered by probing the effects of elemental abundances on hot Jupiter occurrence rates. These rates have been found to correlate with metallicity, but the specific elements responsible for the correlation have largely been unresolved. The …

Development Of Satellite-Assisted Forecasting System For Vibrio Vulnificus Prevalence In Coastal Waters, Saber Aradpour
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Vibrio vulnificus is a halophilic gamma proteobacterium that is autochthonous to coastal waters and is responsible for 50% of seafood-related deaths in the United States. This study presents a series of nowcasting and forecasting models for predicting vibrio vulnificus abundance in oysters by identifying the long-range dependence of vibrio vulnificus abundance on antecedent environmental conditions and detecting the environmental conditions using satellite remote sensing technology. It was discovered that vibrio vulnificus abundance exhibits a long-range dependence on antecedent environmental conditions which can be characterized by seven independent environmental predictors (stressors) including sea surface temperature (SST), water level (WL), sea surface …

Chinese Calligraphic Dance (Ccd) And Generative Arts: Phantom Of Utopia, Ka Hei Cheng
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The intricate elements embedded in the pictorial, ideological, and semantic facets of Chinese characters find their origin in simple calligraphic gestures. This generative arts research and creative work elevates traditional two-dimensional Chinese calligraphy into a multidimensional realm in extended reality (XR) by translating it into a three-dimensional dance movement, integrating music and visual media. This transformation is achieved by decomposing the words into gestures and somaesthetic
movement/interaction, encoding the collective bodily expressions into a manifestation termed Chinese Calligraphic Dance (CCD). Within this dance form, the fusion of categorized and uncategorized gestures/movements is sonified through a motion tracking system, giving rise …

A Friendship Of Two Prima Donnas: The Letters Of Adelina Patti To Giulia Valda, Jacquelyn Ancelet
LSU Master's Theses
Of the many prima donnas of the nineteenth century, Adelina Patti (1843–1919) stands out as one of the most successful, with a fifty-year international concertizing career. Biographers across multiple languages have covered her career in great depth, but devote little attention to her close friendships. Herman Klein (in The Reign of Patti [1920]) and John Cone (in Adelina Patti: Queen of Hearts [1993]), for instance, claim that Patti was known by many, but understood by few. One who does seem to have understood her and developed a close relationship with her was Giulia Valda (1850–1925), herself a professional singer, if …

Glycoconjugate vaccines have become an effective strategy for protection against an array of globally persistent diseases resulting from pathogenic bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), Neisseria meningitidis, and Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi. Comprised of a carbohydrate (referred to as glycan) covalently inked to a carrier protein, these vaccines can initiate adaptive immunity by inducing B and T cell responses once in the lymphatic system. This is particularly relevant for infants two years of age and younger whose immune systems are not fully developed. A continuously emerging threat in clinical settings, Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative bacterium …

Background:Women can spend up to 40%of their lives in the postmenopausal state. As women begin to transition into menopause, known as perimenopause, changes in hormonal concentrations and body composition dramatically increase overall cardiometabolic risk. Dietary patterns and interventions can be utilized to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease (CVD) and some dietary patterns over others may be more beneficial due to their specific effects on the health aspects of menopause. In this narrative review, we summarize key cardiovascular alterations that occur during the menopause transition and explore current dietary recommendations to address CVD risk aswell as explore the newfrontier of precision …

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of central lean mass distribution with the risk of mortality. Methods: This cohort study included 40,283 UK Biobank participants. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the association of central lean mass distribution, i.e., trunk-to-leg lean mass ratio, assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, with the risk of mortality. Results: The median age of the participants was 65 years, and 52% were women. During a median follow-up of 4.18 years, 674 participants died, of whom 366 were due to cancer and 126 were due to cardiovascular causes. Compared …
Quantum Classical Algorithm For Solving The Hubbard Model Via Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, Anshumitra Baul
Quantum Classical Algorithm For Solving The Hubbard Model Via Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, Anshumitra Baul
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Modeling many-body quantum systems is widely regarded as one of the most promising applications for near-term noisy quantum computers. However, in the near term, system size limitation will remain a severe barrier for applications in materials science or strongly correlated systems. A promising avenue of research is to combine many-body physics with machine learning for the classification of distinct phases. I present a workflow that synergizes quantum computing, many-body theory, and quantum machine learning (QML) for studying strongly correlated systems. In particular, it can capture a putative quantum phase transition of the stereotypical strongly correlated system, the Hubbard model. Following …

The Anatomy Of Inequality: Medicine, Mourning, And Socioeconomic Status In Victorian England, Molly G. Decker
LSU Master's Theses
"The Anatomy of Inequality: Medicine, Mourning, and Socioeconomic Status in Victorian England," examines the historic relationships between socioeconomic inequality, death, and medical practice during the Victorian period, with specific ttention on London and surrounding areas. I argue that the extreme socioeconomic disparities of the time were deeply intertwined with the practices surrounding death, mourning, and medical care. The first chapter, "The Price of Sorrow," explores the elaborate mourning rituals and displays of status among the wealthy and upper to middle-class Victorians, detailing how these practices were not only expressions of grief but also conspicuous displays of social status and wealth. …

We investigated the temperature-dependent structural evolution of thermoreversible triblock terpolypeptoid hydrogels, namely poly(N-allyl glycine)-b-poly(N-methyl glycine)-b-poly(N-decyl glycine) (AMD), using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) with contrast matching in conjunction with X-ray scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) techniques. At room temperature, A100M101D10 triblock terpolypeptoids self-assemble into core-corona-type spherical micelles in aqueous solution. Upon heating above the critical gelation temperature (Tgel), SANS analysis revealed the formation of a two-compartment hydrogel network comprising distinct micellar cores composed of dehydrated A blocks and hydrophobic D blocks. At T ≳ Tgel, the temperature-dependent dehydration of A block further leads to the gradual rearrangement of both …

Despite intense research, methods for controlling soft matter’s spontaneous self-assembly into well-defined layers remain a significant challenge. We observed ion-induced structural discontinuities of phospholipid vesicles that can be exploited for controlled self-assembly of soft materials, using DOPC and NaCl as a model system. The observations were made for the 0.25 wt % lipid concentration. We used dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential measurement, cryo-electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray, and small-angle neutron scattering to understand the reason for the discontinuities. For salt concentrations below 8 mM, we observed a decrease in the liposome diameter with increased NaCl concentration. Above 8 mM, we measured a …

Carbohydrates are integral to various biological processes such as cell signaling, function and regulation. Carbohydrates also play critical roles in various disease and metastatic pathways. This has garnered considerable attention to the field of glycoscience, however, the study of carbohydrate-containing compounds remains a challenge due to the difficulty in obtaining pure samples from natural sources. As a result, the biological evaluation of carbohydrates relies on synthetic chemistry to produce pure compounds in significant quantities. However, the synthesis of carbohydrates present their own challenges owing to the complexity in controlling stereochemistry and regiochemistry. The most significant of these challenges is controlling …
