© 2018, © 2017 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes of three pairs of congeneric peripheral fishes distributed on either side of the Isthmus of Panama in order to test their status as geminate species pairs. Our phylogenetic analysis did not support a sister relationship between Gobiomorus dormitor and G. maculatus and therefore they cannot be considered geminates. The average genetic distance of protein-coding genes between Sicydium altum and S. salvini was more than two times larger than between Atlantic and Pacific Awaous banana, suggesting different timings …

Mycobacterium tuberculosis continues to cause devastating levels of mortality due to tuberculosis (TB). The failure to control TB stems from an incomplete understanding of the highly specialized strategies that M. tuberculosis utilizes to modulate host immunity and thereby persist in host lungs. Here, we show that M. tuberculosis induced the expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), an enzyme involved in tryptophan catabolism, in macrophages and in the lungs of animals (mice and macaque) with active disease. In a macaque model of inhalation TB, suppression of IDO activity reduced bacterial burden, pathology, and clinical signs of TB disease, leading to increased host …

We determined the number of permits for oil and gas activities in 14 coastal Louisiana parishes from 1900 to 2017, compared them to land loss on this coast, and estimated their restoration potential. A total of 76,247 oil and gas recovery wells were permitted, of which 35,163 (46%) were on land (as of 2010) and 27,483 of which are officially abandoned. There is a direct spatial and temporal relationship between the number of these permits and land loss, attributable to the above and belowground changes in hydrology resulting from the dredged material levees placed parallel to the canal (spoil banks). …

The Belowground Intersection Of Nutrients And Buoyancy In A Freshwater Marsh, R. Eugene Turner, J E. Bodker, C Schulz

Faculty Publications

! An oligotrophic coastal freshwater marsh converted to open water within months after receiving partially-treated sewage water in fall 2006. Rafts of the upper 60 cm of marsh soil were found throughout the area within two years, as parts of the 1100 year-old marsh were re-distributed in the open water. We examined the marsh soils from 2009 to 2012 to determine some of the cause-and-effect consequences of their decomposition to the formation of these floating mats. There was a lack of herbivory damage in April 2009 where the outer boundary of the soil profile was weakened at 50-60 cm depth, …

Sea-Level Rise Tipping Point Of Delta Survival, R. Eugene Turner, M S. Kearney, R W. Parkinson Jan 2018

Sea-Level Rise Tipping Point Of Delta Survival, R. Eugene Turner, M S. Kearney, R W. Parkinson

Faculty Publications

The estimated rate of global eustatic sea-level rise (RSLR) associated with the formation of 36 of the world's coastal deltas was calculated for the last 22,000 years. These deltas are located in a variety of environmental settings with respect to tidal range, isostasy, and climate. After correcting the original uncalibrated radiocarbon age estimates to calibrated years, 90% of the deltas appear to have formed at an average age of 8109 +/- 122 before present (BP) and a median age of 7967 BP. This age corresponds to a period of significant deceleration in the RSLR to between 5 mm y(-1) and …

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill And Gulf Of Mexico Shelf Hypoxia, Nancy N. Rabalais, Leslie M. Smith, R. Eugene Turner Jan 2018

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill And Gulf Of Mexico Shelf Hypoxia, Nancy N. Rabalais, Leslie M. Smith, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

The oil/water/dispersant mixture from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill was juxtaposed on the Louisiana continental shelf with the annual development of oxygen-depleted bottom waters. There was uncertainty whether the oil from the spill might worsen the extent or severity of the seasonal hypoxic area formation in 2010. The surface and bottom water hydrocarbons in May were elevated compared to in June and July, while the bottom-water dissolved oxygen concentrations were higher in May and June compared to in July. The degradation of oil in the water column or sediments was not known. The results of an empirical orthogonal functions …

Walleye Recruitment Success Is Less Resilient To Warming Water Temperatures In Lakes With Abundant Largemouth Bass Populations, Gretchen J.A. Hansen, Stephen R. Midway, Tyler Wagner Jan 2018

Walleye Recruitment Success Is Less Resilient To Warming Water Temperatures In Lakes With Abundant Largemouth Bass Populations, Gretchen J.A. Hansen, Stephen R. Midway, Tyler Wagner

Faculty Publications

Lakes respond heterogeneously to climate, with implications for fisheries management. We analyzed walleye (Sander vitreus) recruitment to age-0 in 359 lakes in Wisconsin, USA, to (i) quantify the relationship between annual water temperature degree days (DD) and walleye recruitment success and (ii) identify the influence of lake characteristics - area, conductivity, largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) catch rates, and mean DD - on this relationship. The relationship between walleye recruitment and annual DD varied among lakes and was not distinguishable from zero overall (posterior mean = -0.11, 90% CI = -0.34, 0.15). DD effects on recruitment were negative in 198 lakes …

Quantifying the population-level effects of hypoxia on coastal fish species has been challenging. In the companion paper (part 1), we described an individual-based population model (IBM) for Atlantic croaker in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (NWGOM) designed to quantify the long-term population responses to low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations during the summer. Here in part 2, we replace the idealized hypoxia conditions with realistic DO concentrations generated from a 3-dimensional water quality model. Three years were used and randomly arranged into a time series based on the historical occurrence of mild, intermediate, and severe hypoxia year types. We also used …

Contrasting Impacts Of Competition On Ecological And Social Trait Evolution In Songbirds, Jonathan P. Drury, Joseph A. Tobias, Kevin J. Burns, Nicholas A. Mason, Allison J. Shultz, Hélène Morlon

Faculty Publications

© 2018 Drury et al. Competition between closely related species has long been viewed as a powerful selective force that drives trait diversification, thereby generating phenotypic diversity over macroevolutionary timescales. However, although the impact of interspecific competition has been documented in a handful of iconic insular radiations, most previous studies have focused on traits involved in resource use, and few have examined the role of competition across large, continental radiations. Thus, the extent to which broad-scale patterns of phenotypic diversity are shaped by competition remain largely unclear, particularly for social traits. Here, we estimate the effect of competition between interacting …

Denmark Vesey’S Garden: Slavery And Memory In The Cradle Of The Confederacy, Gaines M. Foster Jan 2018

Denmark Vesey’S Garden: Slavery And Memory In The Cradle Of The Confederacy, Gaines M. Foster

Civil War Book Review

In the wake of Dylann Roof’s murders at a Charleston church and another death during the violence at the Lee Monument in Charlottesville, a public debate over taking down Confederate monuments has intensified. The resulting discussion of the meaning of the Confederacy and the use of Confederate symbols can help Americans better understand their racial past. In coming to terms with that past, however, it may be even more important to address how Americans remember and present the history of slavery. If so, Ethan J. Kytle’s and Blain Roberts’ fascinating study of how one city, Charleston, South Carolina, remembered slavery …

Depredation And Deceit: The Making Of The Jicarilla And Ute Wars In New Mexico, Joseph Sánchez Jan 2018

Depredation And Deceit: The Making Of The Jicarilla And Ute Wars In New Mexico, Joseph Sánchez

Civil War Book Review

Gregory F. Michno's book fills an important historiographical gap in New Mexico's history regarding Native American tribes and related Indian policies during New Mexico’s early Anglo-American territorial period (1848-1912). Long before that time, Spanish colonial (1598-1821) and Mexican territorial (1821-1848) officials had enforced a dual Indian policy, one for mountain and plains tribes, another for Indian pueblos. Fearing a deal gone wrong in which New Mexico could be overrun by numerous plains or mountain tribes, Spanish officials and, later, Mexican officials in New Mexico, banned trade with such tribes as the Utes, Apache and Comanche, with the exception of the …

Look At Lincoln: Lincoln’S Sense Of Humor, Frank J. Williams Jan 2018

Look At Lincoln: Lincoln’S Sense Of Humor, Frank J. Williams

Civil War Book Review

Lincoln’s use of jokes and stories is legendary. He had a deep need to use humor as therapy to ward off sadness, tragedy, and family loss. He also employed comic stories to engage listeners and, in the case of trials, engage jurors and discombobulate witnesses. In the law office, addressing clients, Lincoln used humor to gain the trust of clients who found him more approachable when he employed it.

Democracy’S Schools: The Rise Of Public Education In America, Sarah L. Hyde Jan 2018

Democracy’S Schools: The Rise Of Public Education In America, Sarah L. Hyde

Civil War Book Review

Johann Neem’s Democracy’s Schools: The Rise of Public Education in America, from the excellent How Things Worked series, edited by Robin Einhorn and Richard R. John, is a love letter to America’s public education system. Neem begins with a personal recounting of his own experience as an immigrant attending California public schools. He credits the public school system for preparing him for success and Americanizing his family. The author writes “the schools were for all Americans, and the schools helped make us Americans.” (ix) It is a powerful preface and Neem continues the theme throughout the book, explaining the …

The American Elsewhere: Adventure And Manliness In The Age Of Expansion, Adam Pratt Jan 2018

The American Elsewhere: Adventure And Manliness In The Age Of Expansion, Adam Pratt

Civil War Book Review

Taking aim at men who ventured west from the War of 812 to the Mexican War, and then wrote about their experiences, Jimmy Bryan uncovers a world of romance and sentiment seemingly at odds with the rough and tumble world these men explored. The contrast, however, makes sense in the context of the “elsewhere,” and it’s here that Bryan’s analysis of adventuring men in the first half of the 19th century shines. The “elsewhere” is not necessarily a single, geographic place; instead it is an imagining of the west that tied adventurism to the growth of the United States. …

The Power And Politics Of Art In Postrevolutionary Mexico, Edrea Maria Mendoza Jan 2018

The Power And Politics Of Art In Postrevolutionary Mexico, Edrea Maria Mendoza

Civil War Book Review

In the first sentence of her acknowledgements, Stephanie J. Smith admits that Power and Politics of Art in Postrevolutionary Mexico was the book she always wanted to write. Her compelling way of storytelling highlights her devotion and passion for this book, and she brings to life the interweaving of art and politics from the standpoint of members of Mexico’s Communist Party (PCM). Despite their small membership numbers, Smith argues that the artists and intellectuals that made up the organization were responsible in helping to influence Mexico’s political culture and cultural production from its founding in 1919

Literary Cultures Of The Civil War, Brook Thomas Jan 2018

Literary Cultures Of The Civil War, Brook Thomas

Civil War Book Review

Literary scholars give far less attention to the Civil War and especially Reconstruction than do historians. Nonetheless, a revival is underway. Timothy Sweet’s Literary Cultures of the Civil War collects some of the best work being done. His superb introduction traces developments from the centennial to recent sesquicentennial celebrations of the Civil War. For the centennial, Robert Penn Warren, Daniel Aaron, and Edmund Wilson produced synthetic narratives that caught the attention of a wide public.

Inglorious Passages: Noncombat Deaths In The American Civil War, Chris Mackowski

Civil War Book Review

In 2008, Drew Gilpin Faust’s This Republic of Suffering opened the way for what some scholars have since termed a “dark turn” in Civil War scholarship. Historian Brian Matthew Jordan has argued this darker, more complex approach properly considers the war “not as an event, but as a human experience”—and, despite the remove of more than a century and a half, an experience that can once again make us viscerally uncomfortable. The latest contribution to this body of dark scholarship comes from Brian Steel Wills, Inglorious Passages: Noncombat Deaths in the American Civil War (University Press of Kansas, …
