What Motivates Children To Respond? Functional Analysis And Intervention Of Math Computation Fluency, Catherine Rose Lark May 2018

What Motivates Children To Respond? Functional Analysis And Intervention Of Math Computation Fluency, Catherine Rose Lark

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

An abundance of research exists supporting the use of functional analyses to assess and treat problem behavior. In contrast, little research has been conducted on the application of functional analysis (FA) procedures to academic behaviors. The current study attempted to fill this research gap by conducting an FA of academic responding for five elementary students with low math fluency. Sessions were conducted using both a traditional reinforcement schedule of a fixed ratio of one (FR-1) as well as a more practical reinforcement schedule of a fixed ratio of ten (FR-10) to examine the effects of the reinforcement schedule on the …

A high-count-rate ionization chamber design with position-sensitivity has been developed and deployed at several accelerator facilities. Counting rates of ≥ 500 kHz with good Z-separation (up to 5% energy resolution) for particle identification have been demonstrated in a series of commissioning experiments. A position-sensitive capability, with a resolution of 3 mm, has been implemented for the first time to record position information and suppress pileup. The design and performance of the detectors are described.

A Bell test is a randomized trial that compares experimental observations against the philosophical worldview of local realism 1, in which the properties of the physical world are independent of our observation of them and no signal travels faster than light. A Bell test requires spatially distributed entanglement, fast and high-efficiency detection and unpredictable measurement settings 2,3 . Although technology can satisfy the first two of these requirements 4-7, the use of physical devices to choose settings in a Bell test involves making assumptions about the physics that one aims to test. Bell himself noted this weakness in using physical …

Exact Solution Of Mean-Field Plus An Extended T = 1 Nuclear Pairing Hamiltonian In The Seniority-Zero Symmetric Subspace, Feng Pan, Xiaoxue Ding, Kristina D. Launey, Lianrong Dai, Jerry P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

An extended pairing Hamiltonian that describes multi-pair interactions among isospin T=1 and angular momentum J=0 neutron–neutron, proton–proton, and neutron–proton pairs in a spherical mean field, such as the spherical shell model, is proposed based on the standard T=1 pairing formalism. The advantage of the model lies in the fact that numerical solutions within the seniority-zero symmetric subspace can be obtained more easily and with less computational time than those calculated from the mean-field plus standard T=1 pairing model. Thus, large-scale calculations within the seniority-zero symmetric subspace of the model is feasible. As an example of the application, the average neutron–proton …

The Effect Of Community Violence Exposure On Self-Reported Anxiety Symptoms In Adolescents: The Role Of Social Support Versus Family Cohesion, Blair Burke Kreiger May 2018

The Effect Of Community Violence Exposure On Self-Reported Anxiety Symptoms In Adolescents: The Role Of Social Support Versus Family Cohesion, Blair Burke Kreiger

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Exposure to community violence is a prevalent and problematic occurrence for many adolescents. Previous research associates direct (i.e., victimization) and indirect (i.e., witnessing or knowledge of incidences) community violence exposure with numerous adverse externalizing and internalizing psychological symptoms, including aggression, post-traumatic stress, depression, and anxiety. The literature also has identified risk and protective factors in community violence exposure and its outcomes. This study examined the relationship between community violence exposure and self-reported anxiety symptoms in adolescents, while also evaluating the role of social support and family cohesion as moderating variables. Results did not indicate significant relationship between community violence exposure …

Analysis Of Chromatin Interactions Of Beaf-Associated Promoters Using 4c, Shraddha Shrestha May 2018

Analysis Of Chromatin Interactions Of Beaf-Associated Promoters Using 4c, Shraddha Shrestha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A high degree of chromosome compaction is needed to fit nearly 2 meters of DNA inside a human nucleus of around 10 µm diameter. Correct chromatin folding is crucial to facilitate important nuclear functions such as transcription, DNA replication and DNA repair. Nuclei contain a variety of proteins, many of which help regulate chromatin structure and function. The mechanisms by which these proteins work are diverse and complicated. Here, we study the chromatin interactions of Boundary Element Associated Factor (BEAF) associated sites to gain insight into eukaryotic genome organization. We used circular chromosome conformation capture (4C) technology to detect genome-wide …

Dress Rules And Body Perceptions Of Mature Plus Size Women, Megan Katherine Romans May 2018

Dress Rules And Body Perceptions Of Mature Plus Size Women, Megan Katherine Romans

LSU Master's Theses

Due to western societies continued obsession with youth, thinness, and fitness it is no surprise that mature women and plus size women alike are still highly stigmatized and widely ignored by the fashion industry. Past studies related to mature women and plus size women’s dress and body perception have been conducted, however, there is a severe lack of research related to mature women who are also plus size. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to understand the dress rules and body perceptions of mature plus size women (MPSW) over their lifetime. This exploratory study consisted of 16 semi-structured interviews …

Describing The Education Reform Landscape: A Typology Of State Charter School Laws, William Flanary Dabney Jr. May 2018

Describing The Education Reform Landscape: A Typology Of State Charter School Laws, William Flanary Dabney Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since 2014, 42 states have adopted charter school legislation. Research has been conducted on charter school effectiveness and legislative adoption. However, limitations in the research exist regarding school choice in that studies address inequalities and outcomes at the school level, with limited attention to the state-level policy environment. Additionally, research does not consider variations in state school choice policy nor does it link policy differences to equitable educational outcomes.

This descriptive study described and categorized the variation of state charter school polices and explored differences in state level education finance, student demographics and academic outcomes, and school type characteristics. A …

Relative Cooling Power Enhancement By Tuning Magneto-Structural Stability In Ni-Mn-In Heusler Alloys, Jing Han Chen, Nickolaus M. Bruno, Zhenhua Ning, William A. Shelton, Ibrahim Karaman, Yujin Huang, Jianguo Li, Joseph H. Ross

Faculty Publications

Off-stoichiometric Ni2MnIn Heusler alloys have drawn recent attention due to their large magnetocaloric entropy change associated with the first-order magneto-structural transition. Here we present crystal structural, calorimetric and magnetic studies of three compositions. Temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction shows clear structural transition from a 6M modulated monoclinic to a L21 cubic. A significant enhancement of relative cooling power (RCP) was achieved by tuning the magnetic and structural stability through minor compositional changes, with the measured results quantitatively close to the prediction as a function of the ratio between the martensitic transition (Tm) temperature and austenite Curie temperature (TC) although the maximal magnetic …

© The Author(s) 2018. Reliance on anthelmintic drugs to control internal parasites in sheep is no longer sustainable because of the development of resistance to these drugs in parasite populations. Genetic selection may offer an alternative long-term solution, as differences in parasite resistance exist both within and among sheep breeds. However, selection for parasite resistance may have correlated effects on other production traits. The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters for weaning (WFEC) and postweaning (PWFEC) fecal egg counts (FEC) and assess their relationship with birth (BWT), weaning (WWT), and postweaning (PWWT) BW in Katahdin lambs. The …

Two-Sided Tolerance Intervals For Members Of The (Log)-Location-Scale Family Of Distributions, Miao Yuan, Yili Hong, Luis A. Escobar, William Q. Meeker

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose methods to calculate exact factors for two-sided control-the-centre and control-both-tails tolerance intervals for the (log)-location-scale family of distributions, based on complete or Type II censored data. With Type I censored data, exact factors do not exist. For this case, we developed an algorithm to compute approximate factors. Our approaches are based on Monte Carlo simulations. We also provide algorithms for computing TIs that control the probability in both tails of a distribution. A simulation study for Type I censored data shows that the estimated coverage probability is close to the nominal confidence level when the …

Faculty Publications

The principle of similarity (Thompson, 1917) states that the weight of an organismfollows the 3/2-power law of its surface area and is proportional to its volume on the condition that the density is constant. However, the allometric relationship between leaf weight and leaf area has been reported to greatly deviate from the 3/2-power law, with the irregularity of leaf density largely ignored for explaining this deviation. Here, we choose 11 bamboo species to explore the allometric relationships among leaf area (A), density (ρ), length (L), thickness (T), and weight (W). Because the edge of a bamboo leaf follows a simplified …

Assessing The Influence Of Precipitation On Shallow Groundwater Table Response Using A Combination Of Singular Value Decomposition And Cross-Wavelet Approaches, Peng Qi, Guangxin Zhang, Y. Jun Xu, Lei Wang, Changchun Ding, Chunyang Cheng

Faculty Publications

Identifying the spatiotemporal change of the groundwater table to precipitation at the river basin scale can be important for regional water resource management. In this study, we proposed a method that combines singular value decomposition and cross-wavelet approaches to analyze the relationship between groundwater level dynamics and precipitation. The method was applied to the Naoli River Basin, Northeast China. Moreover, the method of continuous wavelet using fast Fourier transform was also used to reveal clearly the relationship between groundwater level and heavy precipitation. The results showed that the major mode of relationship between groundwater and precipitation was divided into four …

Preparation And Preliminary Characterization Of Alligator Mississippiensis Keratin-Rich Extracts, Cristian Josue Macoto Calix

LSU Master's Theses

The state of Louisiana has become the lead producer of alligator skins and meat in the United States. More than 300,000 alligators are harvested annually from farm and wild sources. Simultaneously, the industry generates thousands of pounds of waste during the processing of alligators. This waste contains valuable fibrous proteins such as keratins. This study aimed to identify keratin in keratin-rich extracts prepared from alligator backstraps. Alligator backstrap samples were collected from alligator processing facilities located in Springfield, Louisiana. The percentage of protein extracted with 2-mercaptoethanol (2BME), 2BME and dithiothreitol (DTT), DTT, or sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) was calculated. Sodium Dodecyl …

© 2018 The Author(s). Background: Pollutant particles containing environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are formed during many combustion processes (e.g. thermal remediation of hazardous wastes, diesel/gasoline combustion, wood smoke, cigarette smoke, etc.). Our previous studies demonstrated that acute exposure to EPFRs results in dendritic cell maturation and Th17-biased pulmonary immune responses. Further, in a mouse model of asthma, these responses were enhanced suggesting exposure to EPFRs as a risk factor for the development and/or exacerbation of asthma. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) has been shown to play a role in the differentiation of Th17 cells. In the current study, we …

Event-Based Climatology Of Tropical Cyclone Rainfall In Houston, Texas And Miami, Florida, Jill C. Trepanier, Clay S. Tucker

Faculty Publications

Tropical cyclone (TC) rainfall amounts are compared from 1950-2017 for Houston, Texas and Miami, Florida to estimate the risk of TC rain in both cities. Following the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in 2017, concern has risen over the future of raininess in these locations. Per-event rainfall amounts are aggregated using tracks taken from HURDAT, time-of-rain gathered from National Weather Service daily weather maps, and rainfall totals taken from airport monitoring stations. Risk analysis tools include descriptive statistics, time series, and return frequencies for Houston and Miami, and spatially interpolated surfaces for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The season duration …
