Development, Validation, And Testing Of A Self-Determination Theory Instrument Called The Motivation To Prepare Healthy Foods Questionnaire, Ariana Delong Bailey
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The objectives of these studies were to validate and confirm the structure of a previously developed questionnaire that measures the psychosocial constructs defined by the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and then test this questionnaire in a nutrition education setting. The instrument, titled the Motivation to Prepare Healthy Foods Questionnaire (MPHFQ), included items that measured intrinsic motivation, perceived competence, relatedness, autonomy, and autonomy support. These studies evaluated the questionnaire’s validity and ability to measure changes in the SDT construct scores.
The MPHFQ is a previously developed and reliable instrument intended to measure adults’ intrinsic motivation and perceived competence to prepare healthy foods, …

Quality Of United States And Bangladesh Shrimp Due To Growth And Post-Harvest Practices, Murshida Khan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Shrimp is one of the most consumed and traded seafood, and due to its high demand, consumers depend on both wild caught and farmed products. Post-harvest practices can greatly affect health, safety, and quality, and the goal of this project was to study the effects of chemicals, bacteria, and antibiotics on shrimp from Louisiana and Bangladesh. Quality changes (proximate composition, color, texture and total plate count of bacteria) in shrimp from Louisiana (Farfantepenaeus aztecus and Litopenaeus setiferus) and Bangladesh (Penaeus monodon and Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were determined due to the application of melanosis preventing compounds (sulfite powder, …
The 'Happiest' Corner Of London: Bethnal Green, 1550-1945, Audrey Lynne Gray
The 'Happiest' Corner Of London: Bethnal Green, 1550-1945, Audrey Lynne Gray
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
How is a cultural identity created, defined, and used? In this study, I have traced Bethnal Green’s cultural identity in the period between 1550 and1945. It was a cultural identity defined by poverty, but also by hope; residents were poor but scrappy, able to make do with the worst of circumstances. That cultural identity defined the area to outsiders; it was also embraced by the residents. Following the area’s path from an idyllic and genteel area to an overcrowded slum, I have traced the experience of poverty, and the development and impact of poverty relief, from the perspective of both …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
ABSTRACT
In France, the 17th century was a crucial period for the development of written French. New spelling rules were implemented but older ones were still in favor. When secular and religious elites established themselves in colonial Nouvelle France, (i.e., Canada and the United States), they brought in this set of old and more modern conventions.
Rare are the studies consecrated on hand-written French in the 17th century. Although a few researchers have looked at the literature produced by some famous French sisters, no one has ever studied their orthography. The originality of this dissertation arises from its …

© 2018 Elsevier Inc. The present study explores alternate pericyclic chemistries for tethering amine-terminal biomolecules onto silver nanoparticles. Employing the versatile tool of the retro-Diels-Alder (rDA) reaction, three thermally-labile cycloadducts are constructed that cleave at variable temperature ranges. While the reaction between furan and maleimide has widely been reported, the current study also evaluates the reverse reaction kinetics between thiophene-maleimide, and pyrrole-maleimide cycloadducts. Density Functional Theorem (DFT) calculations used to model and plan the experiments, predict energy barriers for the thiophene-maleimide reverse reaction to be greatest, and the pyrrole-maleimide barriers the lowest. Based on the computational analyses, it is projected …

Techniques Of Energy-Efficient Vlsi Chip Design For High-Performance Computing, Zhou Zhao
Techniques Of Energy-Efficient Vlsi Chip Design For High-Performance Computing, Zhou Zhao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
How to implement quality computing with the limited power budget is the key factor to move very large scale integration (VLSI) chip design forward. This work introduces various techniques of low power VLSI design used for state of art computing. From the viewpoint of power supply, conventional in-chip voltage regulators based on analog blocks bring the large overhead of both power and area to computational chips. Motivated by this, a digital based switchable pin method to dynamically regulate power at low circuit cost has been proposed to make computing to be executed with a stable voltage supply. For one of …

The transgenic technology using a single gene has been widely used for crop improvement. But the transgenic pyramiding of multiple genes, a promising alternative especially for enhancing complexly inherited abiotic stress tolerance, has received little attention. Here, we developed and evaluated transgenic rice lines with a single Salt Responsive Protein 3-1 (SaSRP3-1) gene as well as pyramids with two-genes SaSRP3-1 and Vacuolar H+-ATPase subunit c1 (SaVHAc1) derived from a halophyte grass Spartina alterniflora L. for salt tolerance at seedling, vegetative, and reproductive stages. The overexpression of this novel gene SaSRP3-1 resulted in significantly better growth of E. coli with the …

The Distinctive Regulatory Mechanisms Of Bacterial Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase, Alexandra Leigh Evans
The Distinctive Regulatory Mechanisms Of Bacterial Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase, Alexandra Leigh Evans
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Metabolic Regulation is a complex system used to control cellular metabolism in response to conditions in the cell’s environment. For most enzymes, the cell can rely upon a minimal amount of regulation; however, critical enzymes, such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase, must be regulated at multiple levels. Acetyl-CoA carboxylase catalyzes the first committed step in fatty acid synthesis. In bacteria, acetyl-CoA carboxylase forms a complex of three subunits–biotin carboxylase, biotin carboxyl carrier protein, and carboxyltransferase–which catalyze the carboxylation of acetyl-CoA to form malonyl-CoA via two half-reactions. In the first half-reaction, biotin covalently linked to biotin carboxyl carrier protein is carboxylated by biotin …
Engineering Metal-Ligand Interface For Selective Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction, Yuxin Fang
Engineering Metal-Ligand Interface For Selective Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction, Yuxin Fang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Unsustainable exploitation of fossil fuel and its massive greenhouse gas emission necessitates the development in alternative energy sources. Chemical fuels (CH3OH or C2H5OH) outperform other choices, such as batteries for their high energy densities, which is key to portability. Electrochemical reduction of CO2is capable of producing a wide range of valuable fuels (Syngas, formic acid, methane and methanol, etc.). Converting CO2into carbon-based fuels further closes the carbon neutral cycle, which contributes to the effort in reducing global CO2emission. Integration of organic ligands with transition metals shows great potential …

© The authors 2018. EseN is a type III secretion system (T3SS) effector that is encoded on the Edwardsiella ictaluri chromosome and is homologous to a family of T3SS effector proteins with phosphothreonine lyase (PTL) activity, including OspF from Shigella and SpvC from Salmonella. A yeast-2-hybrid system was used to identify the major vault protein (MVP) as a specific host-cell binding partner for EseN, and the proximity ligation assay (PLA) confirmed the interaction. Similar to other pathogens, E. ictaluri invasion activates extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) early in the infection, which are subsequently inactivated by EseN. Structurally, EseN …

The β decay of neutron-rich Cu74 has been studied at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. By using a high-resolution mass separator a purified Cu74 beam was obtained, thus allowing decay through its isobar chain to stable Ge74 without any decay chain member dominating. A total of 170γ rays were associated with Cu74β decay with 111 placed in the Zn74 level scheme. Updated β feeding intensities and estimated log(ft) values are presented, and new Jπ assignments are proposed using shell model calculations. The progression of simulated total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy (TAGS) based on proposed levels …

Natural And Targeted Isovariants Of The Rice Actin Depolymerizing Factor 2 Can Alter Its Functional And Regulatory Binding Properties, Sonali Sengupta, Kanniah Rajasekaran, Niranjan Baisakh

Actin depolymerizing factors (ADFs) are ubiquitous actin-binding proteins that play essential roles in maintaining cellular actin dynamics by depolymerizing/severing F-actin. Plant ADF isoforms show functional divergence via differential biochemical and cellular properties. We have shown previously that ADF2 of rice (OsADF2) and smooth cordgrass (SaADF2) displayed contrasting biochemical properties and stress response in planta. As a proof-of-concept that amino acid variances contribute to such functional difference, single amino acid mutants of OsADF2 were generated based on its sequence differences with SaADF2. Biochemical studies showed that the single-site amino acid mutations altered actin binding, depolymerizing, and severing properties of OsADF2. Phosphosensitive …

A reliable, real time, multi-sensor fusion functionality is crucial for localization of actively controlled capsule endoscopy robots, which are an emerging, minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic technology for the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In this study, we propose a novel multi-sensor fusion approach based on a particle filter that incorporates an online estimation of sensor reliability and a non-linear kinematic model learned by a recurrent neural network. Our method sequentially estimates the true robot pose from noisy pose observations delivered by multiple sensors. We experimentally test the method using 5 degree-of-freedom (5-DoF) absolute pose measurement by a magnetic localization system and …

Spectrum- And Energy-Efficient Radio Resource Allocation For Wireless Communications, Shengjie Guo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Wireless communications has been evolved significantly over the last decade. During this period, higher quality of service (QoS) requirements have been proposed to support various services. In addition, due to the increasing number of wireless devices and transmission, the energy consumption of the wireless networks becomes a burden. Therefore, the energy efficiency is considered as important as spectrum efficiency for future wireless communications networks, and spectrum and energy efficiency have become essential research topics in wireless communications. Moreover, due to the exploding of number mobile devices, the limited radio resources have become more and more scarce. With large numbers of …

Managing The Risks And Rewards Of Death In Eusocial Insects, Qian Sun, Kenneth F. Haynes, Xuguo Zhou
Faculty Publications
Eusocial insects frequently face death of colony members as a consequence of living in large groups where the success of the colony is not dependent on the fate of the individual. Whereas death of conspecifics commonly triggers aversion in many group-living species due to risk of pathogens, eusocial insects perform cooperative corpse management. The causes and social context of the death, as well as feeding and nesting ecology of the species, influence the way that corpses are treated. The corpse itself releases cues that dictate the colony's response. As a result, social insects exhibit behavioural responses that promote disease resistance, …

We provide expansions of the Detweiler-Whiting singular field for a particle with a scalar field moving along arbitrary, planar accelerated trajectories in Schwarzschild spacetime. We transcribe these results into mode-sum regularization parameters, computing previously unknown terms that increase the convergence rate of the mode-sum. We test our results by computing the self-force along a variety of accelerated trajectories. For non-uniformly accelerated circular orbits we present results from a new 1+1D discontinuous Galerkin time-domain code which employs an effective source. We also present results for uniformly accelerated circular orbits and accelerated bound eccentric orbits computed within a frequency-domain treatment. Our regularization …

Intertidal coastal environments are prone to changes induced by sea level rise, increases in storminess, temperature, and anthropogenic disturbances. It is unclear how changes in external drivers may affect the dynamics of low energy coastal environments because their response is non-linear, and characterized by many thresholds and discontinuities. As such, process-based modeling of the ecogeomorphic processes underlying the dynamics of these ecosystems is useful, not only to predict their change through time, but also to generate new hypotheses and research questions. Here, we used a three-point dynamic model to investigate how seagrass might affect the behavior of coupled marsh-tidal flat …

Negative Energy Blowup Results For The Focusing Hartree Hierarchy Via Identities Of Virial And Localized Virial Type, Aynur Bulut

We establish virial and localized virial identities for solutions to the Hartree hierarchy, an infinite system of partial differential equations which arises in mathematical modeling of many body quantum systems. As an application, we use arguments originally developed in the study of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (see work of Zakharov, Glassey, and Ogawa–Tsutsumi) to show that certain classes of negative energy solutions must blowup in finite time. The most delicate case of this analysis is the proof of negative energy blowup without the assumption of finite variance; in this case, we make use of the localized virial estimates, combined with …

Surface sediments collected from the continental shelf off the western Guangdong Province and northeastern Hainan Island are analyzed for selected heavy metals contents including Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As to determine spatial distribution, potential ecological risks, and sources. In addition, some of the controlling factors of heavy metals distribution are also discussed. The average heavy metals contents decrease in the order of Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > As > Cd. The averaged pollution degree, as shown by the index of geo-accumulation (Igeo), decreases in the order of Zn > Cu > Pb > Cr > Cd > As. Due to the barrier of islands, the …

© 2018 American Society for Microbiology. RNA interference (RNAi) is a widespread antiviral mechanism triggered by virus-produced double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs). In Caenorhabditis elegans, antiviral RNAi involves a RIG-I-like RNA helicase, termed DRH-1 (dicer related RNA helicase 1), that is not required for classical RNAi triggered by artificial dsRNA. Currently, whether antiviral RNAi in C. elegans involves novel factors that are dispensable for classical RNAi remains an open question. To address this question, we designed and carried out a genetic screen that aims to identify novel genes involved in worm antiviral RNAi. By introducing extra copies of known antiviral RNAi genes …

© 2018 American Society for Microbiology. Fatty acid hydroperoxides are involved in host-pathogen interactions. In both plants and mammals, polyunsaturated fatty acids are liberated during infection and enzymatically oxidized to the corresponding toxic hydroperoxides during the defensive oxidative burst that is designed to thwart the infection. The bacterial transcription factor OhrR (organic hydroperoxide reductase regulator) is oxidized by organic hydroperoxides, as a result of which the ohr gene encoding organic hydroperoxide reductase is induced. This enzyme converts the hydroperoxides to less toxic alcohols. We show here that OhrR from Burkholderia thailandensis represses expression of ohr. Gene expression is induced by …
