© 2018 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Past studies have revealed potential differences in the functional meaning and social evaluation of children's temperamental shyness between Chinese interdependence-oriented and North American independence-oriented cultural contexts. However, very little is known about shy Chinese American children's adjustment in Western school contexts and potential pathways underlying their adjustment. To address this gap in the literature, we examined the associations between Chinese American children's temperamental shyness and their social adjustment outcomes, including peer exclusion, prosocial behavior, and assertiveness/leadership skills. In addition, the mediating role of children's display of anxious-withdrawn behavior and the moderating role of …

In the current study, we characterized the expression and histone modification profiles of the alternative promoters found within imprinted Igf2r, Mest, Zac1, Peg3, Snrpn and non-imprinted Myc loci. In terms of expression pattern, the alternative promoters are highly tissue-specific, which is in a stark contrast to the ubiquitous expression of the corresponding main promoters. The alternative promoters are associated with the …

We simulated larval feeding behavior in seed blends of non-Bt and Bt maize to determine if seed blends create more favorable conditions for heterozygous-resistant insects over their Bt-susceptible counterparts. Survival, growth, development, and progeny production of four genotypes of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, Bt-susceptible (aabb), Cry1A.105 heterozygous resistant (Aabb), Cry2Ab2 heterozygous resistant (aaBb), and Cry1A.105/Cry2Ab2 heterozygous resistant (AaBb), were evaluated in eight feeding sequences (Seq 1–8) of non-Bt and MON 89034 Bt maize leaf tissue expressing the Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 proteins. We report variation in the performance of the four genotypes across the feeding sequences and biological parameters measured. …

It has been established that contrast in the elastic properties can lead to enhancement of fracture toughness in heterogeneous materials. Focussing on layered materials as a model system, we show that this enhancement is a result of two distinct phenomena – first, fluctuations in stress leading to regions where the stress intensity at the crack is considerably smaller than that of the macroscopically applied value; and second, the lack of stress intensity when a crack is at a compliant to stiff interface thereby requiring renucleation. Using theoretical, computational and experimental methods, we study two geometries – a layered material and …

The Hindu Kush–Kohistan–Karakoram region is critical to understanding the long-term accretion history of the south Asian margin pre-and post-India–Asia collision and the impact of these collisions on the development of high topography. However, knowledge about this region remains incomplete owing to sparse studies. Here, we present a study comprising detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology, detrital muscovite Ar/ Ar thermochronology and numerical modelling on Ar/ Ar dates. The study identifies zircon U–Pb age peaks at 200, 110–130, 60–80 and 28–40 Ma, supporting the polyphase collisions and crustal growth in the south Asian margin. The modelling study reveals fast cooling–erosion at 115–129, 69–71, …

© 2017 Cambridge University Press. Latest Sandbian to early Katian sequences across Laurentia's epicontinental sea exhibit a transition from lithologies characterized as 'warm-water' carbonates to those characterized as 'cool-water'carbonates. This shift occurs across the regionally recognized M4/M5 sequence stratigraphic boundary and has been attributed to climatic cooling and glaciation, basin reorganization and upwelling of open ocean water, and/or increased water turbidity and terrigenous input associated with the Taconic tectophase. Documentation of oxygen isotopic trends across the M4/M5 and through bracketing strata provides a potential means of distinguishing among these alternative scenarios; however, oxygen isotopic records generated to date have failed …

A Robust Solver For A Mixed Finite Element Method For The Cahn–Hilliard Equation, Susanne C. Brenner, Amanda E. Diegel, Li Yeng Sung
Faculty Publications
We develop a robust solver for a mixed finite element convex splitting scheme for the Cahn–Hilliard equation. The key ingredient of the solver is a preconditioned minimal residual algorithm (with a multigrid preconditioner) whose performance is independent of the spacial mesh size and the time step size for a given interfacial width parameter. The dependence on the interfacial width parameter is also mild.

Sensory biases caused by the residual sensations of previously served samples are known as carryover effects (COE). Contrast and convergence effects are the two possible outcomes of carryover. COE can lead to misinterpretations of acceptability, due to the presence of intrinsic psychological/physiological biases. COE on sensory acceptability (hedonic liking) were characterized and quantified using mixed and nonlinear models. N = 540 subjects evaluated grape juice samples of different acceptability qualities (A = good, B = medium, C = poor) for the liking of color (C), taste (T), and overall (OL). Three models were used to quantify COE: (1) COE as …
Return To The Repressive: Re-Thinking Nature- Culture In Contemporary Feminist Theory, Deborah Goldgaber
Return To The Repressive: Re-Thinking Nature- Culture In Contemporary Feminist Theory, Deborah Goldgaber

In "History of Sexuality"(Vol I.) Foucault argued that repression is the wrong model of power, understanding it in exclusively negative terms, as external to the body it constrains and inhibits. Power may also be positive, productive, and constitutive of the body and its possibilities. Thus, an adequate account of the relation between cultural forces and the body, Foucault argues, must challenge the "repressive hypothesis"(RH). Contemporary feminist accounts of the body are structured by this same oppositional view of power Foucault assumed: to call on Rosi Braidotti's distinction, discursive (cultural) forces are either negative or repressive (potestas) or positive and empowering …

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd Determining whether U isotopes are fractionated during incorporation into biogenic carbonates could help to refine the application of 238U/235U in CaCO3 as a robust paleoredox proxy. Recent laboratory experiments have demonstrated that heavy uranium (U) isotopes were preferentially incorporated into abiotic aragonite, with an isotope fractionation of ∼0.10‰ (238U/235U). In contrast, no detectable U isotope fractionation has been observed in most natural primary biogenic carbonates, but the typical measurement precision of these studies was ±0.10‰ and so could not resolve a fractionation of the magnitude observed in the laboratory. To resolve this issue, we have developed …

Quantitative assessment of the adhesion strength of ceramic hard coatings on substrates is a subject of great technological and scientific relevance, the achievement of which has proven difficult over the past two decades. Here we show that a micro-pillar tension testing protocol may serve as an effective method for this purpose, and demonstrate its effectiveness through a combination of micro tension testing and crystal plasticity finite element analysis (CPFEA). Tensile loading perpendicular to the interfaces, as well as accompanying CPFEA simulations, was conducted on CrN/Cu/CrN/Si micro-pillar tensile specimens fabricated from vapor phase deposited thin film sandwich structures. All tensile loading …
Molecular Level Interactions And Transformations Of Natural Organic Matter Within The Environment, Benjamin J. Haywood
Molecular Level Interactions And Transformations Of Natural Organic Matter Within The Environment, Benjamin J. Haywood
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This work was done in order to deepen the understanding of interactions occurring during sorption of anthropogenic organic compounds and dissolved organic matter (DOM) onto soil. As well as the transformation DOM undergoes during the sorption process and the overall transformation OM undergoes in the environment. This was achieved through the use of a “bottom-up” synthetic investigation, “top-down” natural system study, and a combination of these approaches.
The “bottom-up” approach, discussed in Chapter 2, involved the synthesis of a modular multi-tiered engineered soil surrogate (ESS) designed to mimic OM and general trends identified in the literature that impacts sorption behavior. …

Self-Healing Microcapsules As Concrete Aggregates For Corrosion Inhibition In Reinforced Concrete, Homero Castaneda, Marwa Hassan, Miladin Radovic, Jose Milla

Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures are vital to the US’s civil infrastructure for their strength and versatility. Unfortunately, RC elements deteriorate rapidly when exposed to corrosive environments. One possible solution is to extend the life of RC elements and systems using microencapsulated corrosion inhibitors to reduce the rebar corrosion rate. The capsules house an anodic corrosion inhibitor agent including calcium nitrate (CN) and triethanolamine (TEA). The integration of such microencapsulated materials will enhance the durability and extend the useful life by controlling the corrosion precursors and the corrosion process during damage evolution. Therefore, this work aims to develop and characterize the …

Transportation infrastructure needs continuous monitoring. However, traditional inspections cost money and are conducted visually. New technologies for bridge monitoring are expensive and complex. This project involved developing cost-effective sensor technologies that can be applied towards the maintenance of railroad bridges by recording reference-free transverse displacement. More specifically, this project developed new applications of new technologies (Arduino, wireless smart sensors, drones, Hololens) and promoted workforce development with an emphasis on outreach of high-school students. This project was carried out in three main phases: (1) development and validation of technologies, (2) education and outreach to students, and (3) outreach to industry consisting …
Sustainability-Based Long-Term Management Of Bridges Under Multi-Hazard Exposure, Mohamed Soliman
Sustainability-Based Long-Term Management Of Bridges Under Multi-Hazard Exposure, Mohamed Soliman
Publications
Bridges are under deterioration due to various mechanical and environmental stressors. Hydraulic-related hazards (e.g., flood and scour), aggressive environmental conditions, and seismic events (e.g., earthquake) are recognized as the most significant threats to the safety of bridges. In traditional risk assessment methods for structures susceptible to damage due to floods and other natural hazards (e.g., corrosion and seismic events), future hazard predictions are conducted using historic return periods and climate records. However, recent increase in flood intensity in central-southern states indicate that future hazard occurrence rate may not necessarily follow past trends. Accordingly, current design, assessment, and management methodologies should …

Entanglement Cost And Quantum Channel Simulation, Mark M. Wilde

This paper proposes a revised definition for the entanglement cost of a quantum channel N. In particular, it is defined here to be the smallest rate at which entanglement is required, in addition to free classical communication, in order to simulate n calls to N, such that the most general discriminator cannot distinguish the n calls to N from the simulation. The most general discriminator is one who tests the channels in a sequential manner, one after the other, and this discriminator is known as a quantum tester [Chiribella et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 060401 (2008)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.101.060401] or one who …

Interactions Observed With Clomazone Plus Pendimethalin When Mixed With Postemergence Rice Herbicides, Matthew Osterholt
LSU Master's Theses
A study was conducted at the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center’s H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station (RRS) in 2017 and 2018 to evaluate whether the pre-packaged mixture of clomazone plus pendimethalin should be applied delayed preemergence (DPRE) or postemergence (POST) within a herbicide residual overlay with saflufenacil, clomazone, or quinclorac. POST applications also included penoxsulam or halosulfuron in combination with the second residual application. No differences were observed with barnyardgrass control at 14 DAT across all treatments with 92 to 98% control. At 42 DAT, barnyardgrass treated with either clomazone plus pendimethalin applied at either timingin combination with either …
Design And Application Of Task-Specific Gumbos And Nanogumbos For Sensing And Separation, Mingyan Cong
Design And Application Of Task-Specific Gumbos And Nanogumbos For Sensing And Separation, Mingyan Cong
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The work presented in this dissertation employs task-specific materials for sensing and protein separation applications. These materials were derived from a group of uniform materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS). GUMBOS are organic salts similar to ionic liquids, but have melting points ranging from 25 to 250 °C. As with ionic liquids, the properties of GUMBOS can be easily tuned by changing the counter-ion. Thus, task-specific GUMBOS can be designed and prepared with properties that are beneficial for applications in sensing or protein separation. In this dissertation, the selective responsive behavior of a series of GUMBOS and nanomaterials derived from …

An Evaluation Of Modified Bed Load Sediment Transport Equations For Enhanced Sediment Transport Quantification In Steep Mountain Streams – Case Study Little Fountain Creek, Colorado Springs, Co., James Emerson Smith Iv
LSU Master's Theses
In mountainous regions, extreme floods occur every year, placing societies and infrastructures at risk. Communities rely on local, state, and federal agencies to emplace flood structures, perform flood risk assessments, and simulate catastrophic events. While, our ability to quantify and predict the movement of sediment in streams with low gradients is well developed (Bathurst, 1987), our ability to quantify and predict the movement of sediment along steep mountain streams (SMS) has not been developed to a similar degree (Yager, 2012; Schneider, 2016). To most effectively manage mountainous watersheds and understand the risk associated with flood events, scientists must better understand …

Analysis Of Fluvial Scroll Bar Development With Surface Wave Inversion: False River, Louisiana, Blake Odom
LSU Master's Theses
The development of ridge-and-swale scroll bar topography of meandering river point bars is not well understood. We hypothesize that scroll bars formed during lateral accretion by the landward migration of transverse bars. To explore this, we relate the scroll bar topography to the internal sedimentary structure. We acquire, invert, and interpolate three pseudo-2D shear wave velocity profiles in two regions of the False River point bar, a Mississippi river oxbow lake in Pointe Coupee Parish Louisiana. Prior studies provide electrical conductivity well logs and cores as well as SH seismic reflection images along the same seismic surveys. LiDAR elevation data …
