Non-Pt-Symmetric Two-Layer Cylindrical Waveguide For Exceptional-Point-Enhanced Optical Devices, Yin Huang, Yuecheng Shen, Georgios Veronis

Faculty Publications

We investigate the exceptional points in a two-layer cylindrical waveguide structure consisting of absorbing and non-absorbing dielectrics. We show that, by tuning the core to total radius ratio and the refractive index of the core layer in such a structure, the complex effective indices of two waveguide modes can coalesce so that an exceptional point is formed. We show that the sensitivity of the effective index of the waveguide mode to variations of the refractive index of the material filling the shell layer is enhanced at the exceptional point. In addition, we show that larger sensitivity enhancement is obtained for …

Correlation Of Circular Differential Optical Absorption With Geometric Chirality In Plasmonic Meta-Atoms, Jon C. Wilson, Philipp Gutsche, Sven Herrmann, Sven Burger, Kevin M. Mcpeak Jan 2019

Correlation Of Circular Differential Optical Absorption With Geometric Chirality In Plasmonic Meta-Atoms, Jon C. Wilson, Philipp Gutsche, Sven Herrmann, Sven Burger, Kevin M. Mcpeak

Faculty Publications

We report a strong correlation between the calculated broadband circular differential optical absorption (CDOA) and the geometric chirality of plasmonic meta-atoms with twodimensional chirality. We investigate this correlation using three common gold meta-atom geometries: L-shapes, triangles, and nanorod dimers, over a broad range of geometric parameters. We show that this correlation holds for both contiguous plasmonic meta-atoms and non-contiguous structures which support plasmonic coupling effects. A potential application for this correlation is the rapid optimization of plasmonic nanostructure for maximum broadband CDOA.

Modeling/Simulation Of The Dividing Wall Column By Using The Rigorous Model, Chi Zhai, Qinjun Liu, Jose A. Romagnoli, Wei Sun Jan 2019

Modeling/Simulation Of The Dividing Wall Column By Using The Rigorous Model, Chi Zhai, Qinjun Liu, Jose A. Romagnoli, Wei Sun

Faculty Publications

Dividing wall column (DWC) is an atypical distillation column with an internal, vertical WE partition wall that effectively accommodates two conventional distillation columns into one to improve the thermodynamic efficiency. In previous studies, different equivalent models by combining conventional columns are adopted to approximate the DWC modeling, which may not well describe the integration of the DWC; moreover, the computational cost increases when multiple columns are implemented to represent one DWC. In this paper, a rigorous mathematical model is proposed based on the mass balance, the energy and phase equilibrium of the DWC, where decision variables and state variables are …

Reaction Pathways For Hcn On Transition Metal Surfaces, Mohammed Abdel-Rahman, Xu Feng, Mark Muir, Kushal Ghale, Ye Xu, Michael Trenary

Faculty Publications

The adsorption and decomposition of HCN on the Pd(111) and Ru(001) surfaces have been studied with reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The results are compared to earlier studies of HCN adsorption on the Pt(111) and Cu(100) surfaces. In all cases the initial adsorption at low temperatures gives rise to a ν(C-H) stretch peak at ∼3300 cm-1, which is very close to the gas phase value indicating that the triple CN bond is retained for the adsorbed molecule. When the Pd(111) surface is heated to room temperature, the HCN is converted to the aminocarbyne species, CNH2, which …

Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 oxide has been modified by ultrathin Al2O3 coatings via atomic layer deposition (ALD) at a growth rate of 1.12 Å/cycle. All characterizations results including TEM, SEM, XRD and XPS together confirm high conformality and uniformity of the resultant Al2O3 layer on the surface of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 particles. Coating thickness of the Al2O3 layer is optimized at ~2 nm, corresponding to 20 ALD cycles to enhance the electrochemical performance of Ni-rich cathode materials at extended voltage ranges. As a result, 20 Al2O3 ALD-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material can deliver an initial discharge capacity of 212.8 mAh/g, and an associated coulombic efficiency …

Defect Engineering Activating (Boosting) Zinc Storage Capacity Of Mos2, Wangwang Xu, Congli Sun, Kangning Zhao, Xun Cheng, Saurin Rawal, Ye Xu, Ying Wang Jan 2019

Defect Engineering Activating (Boosting) Zinc Storage Capacity Of Mos2, Wangwang Xu, Congli Sun, Kangning Zhao, Xun Cheng, Saurin Rawal, Ye Xu, Ying Wang

Faculty Publications

Rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries are particularly attractive for large-scale application due to their low cost, environmental friendliness and safety. However, the development of zinc ion batteries is seriously impeded by the limited choice of suitable cathode materials owing to their low reversibility and slow diffusion of divalent zinc cations in cathodes. Herein, we report defect engineered MoS2-x nanosheets as cathode for Zn ion cells. These MoS2-x nanosheets show a preferential insertion of Zn ions into sulfur vacancies, allowing a much greater capacity to be obtained compared to pure MoS2. Combined STEM analysis, electrochemical study, and theoretical modeling reveal that …

Three-Dimensional Analytical Poromechanical Solutions For An Arbitrarily Inclined Borehole Subjected To Fluid Injection, S. L. Chen Jan 2019

Three-Dimensional Analytical Poromechanical Solutions For An Arbitrarily Inclined Borehole Subjected To Fluid Injection, S. L. Chen

Faculty Publications

Hydraulic fracturing is the primary method of stimulation in unconventional reservoirs, playing a significant role in oil and gas production enhancement. A key issue for the analysis of hydraulic fracture initiation is to accurately determine the stress distributions in the vicinity of the borehole caused by the injection of pressurized fluids. This paper develops an exact, three-dimensional, poroelastic coupled analytical solution for such stress analysis of an arbitrarily inclined borehole subjected concurrently to a finite-length fluid discharge and in situ stresses, using Fourier expansion theorem and the Laplace–Fourier integral transform technique. The complicated boundary conditions, which involve the mixed boundary …

Analysis Of Cylindrical Cavity Expansion In Anisotropic Critical State Soils Under Drained Conditions, K. Liu, S. L. Chen Jan 2019

Analysis Of Cylindrical Cavity Expansion In Anisotropic Critical State Soils Under Drained Conditions, K. Liu, S. L. Chen

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a semi-analytical solution for the drained cylindrical cavity expansion problem using the well-known anisotropic modified Cam clay model proposed by Dafalias in 1987. The prominent feature of this elastoplastic model, i.e., its capability to describe both the initial fabric anisotropy and stress-induced anisotropy of soils, makes the anisotropic elastoplastic solution derived herein for the cavity problem a more realistic one. Following the development by Chen and Abousleiman in 2013 of a novel solution scheme that establishes a link between the Eulerian and Lagrangian formulations of the condition of radial equilibrium, the plastic zone solution can eventually be …

Mrt-Lattice Boltzmann Model For Multilayer Shallowwater Flow, Kevin R. Tubbs, Frank T.C. Tsai Jan 2019

Mrt-Lattice Boltzmann Model For Multilayer Shallowwater Flow, Kevin R. Tubbs, Frank T.C. Tsai

Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study are to introduce a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) to simulate multilayer shallow water flows and to introduce graphics processing unit (GPU) computing to accelerate the lattice Boltzmann model. Using multiple relaxation times in the lattice Boltzmann model has an advantage of handling very low kinematic viscosity without causing a stability problem in the shallow water equations. This study develops a multilayer MRT-LBM to solve the multilayer Saint-Venant equations to obtain horizontal flow velocities in various depths. In the multilayer MRT-LBM, vertical kinematic viscosity forcing is the key term to couple adjacent layers. We …

Optimizing The Performance Of Microsurfacing Treatments In Flexible Pavements And Assessing Its Effects On Moisture Damage, Mohammad Z. Bashar, Mostafa A. Elseifi, Momen R. Mousa, Zhongjie Zhang, Kevin Gaspard Jan 2019

Optimizing The Performance Of Microsurfacing Treatments In Flexible Pavements And Assessing Its Effects On Moisture Damage, Mohammad Z. Bashar, Mostafa A. Elseifi, Momen R. Mousa, Zhongjie Zhang, Kevin Gaspard

Faculty Publications

Louisiana’s $6.3 million microsurfacing program is amongst the largest microsurfacing programs in the United States. As microsurfacing seals the road surface, the effectiveness of this treatment in such a setting has been a concern in recent years by linking it to moisture damage caused by the trapped moisture underneath the pavement especially in areas with shallow groundwater table. Furthermore, the cost-effectiveness and optimal timing of microsurfacing applications are also not well established for the south-central United States. The objective of this study was to assess the short-term and long-term effects of microsurfacing treatments and to evaluate whether microsurfacing is a …

Joint Power Allocation And User Scheduling For Device-To-Device-Enabled Heterogeneous Networks With Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access, Jiaqi Liu, Gang Wu, Sa Xiao, Xiangwei Zhou, Geoffrey Ye Li, Shengjie Guo, Shaoqian Li

Faculty Publications

Device-to-device (D2D) communications-enabled dense heterogeneous networks (HetNets) with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are promising solutions to meet the high-throughput requirement and support massive connectivity. In this paper, we propose a novel framework on the D2D-enabled HetNets with NOMA, where small cells underlay the uplink spectrum of macrocells to make full use of spectrum resources, NOMA technique is invoked to serve more downlink users simultaneously, and D2D-enabled multi-hop transmission is established to enhance signal reception of the far users (FUs) on cell edge. We investigate joint power allocation and user scheduling to maximize the ergodic sum rate of the near users …

Geometric Hawkes Processes With Graph Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks, Jin Shang, Mingxuan Sun Jan 2019

Geometric Hawkes Processes With Graph Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks, Jin Shang, Mingxuan Sun

Faculty Publications

Hawkes processes are popular for modeling correlated temporal sequences that exhibit mutual-excitation properties. Existing approaches such as feature-enriched processes or variations of Multivariate Hawkes processes either fail to describe the exact mutual influence between sequences or become computational inhibitive in most real-world applications involving large dimensions. Incorporating additional geometric structure in the form of graphs into Hawkes processes is an effective and efficient way for improving model prediction accuracy. In this paper, we propose the Geometric Hawkes Process (GHP) model to better correlate individual processes, by integrating Hawkes processes and a graph convolutional recurrent neural network. The deep network structure …

Synthesis Of Fault Traces In Se Louisiana Relative To Infrastructure, David Culpepper, Elizabeth Chinn Mcdade, Nancye Dawers, Mark Kulp, Rui Zhang Jan 2019

Synthesis Of Fault Traces In Se Louisiana Relative To Infrastructure, David Culpepper, Elizabeth Chinn Mcdade, Nancye Dawers, Mark Kulp, Rui Zhang

Publications

Geological faulting has been implicated as a contributor to subsidence, coastal land-loss and submergence of marshlands in southern Louisiana. This report reviews whether fault motion, either by slow creep or more sudden slip, can cause deformation of engineered structures resulting in increased infrastructure maintenance and repair costs. The impact of surface, or near-surface, geologic faulting on critical infrastructure is insufficiently documented in southeastern Louisiana, but the state has a vast amount of energy-sector subsurface data that to date has been under-utilized for transportation and other near-surface engineering applications. Recent and on-going work by research groups at Tulane University, University of …

"What is spirituality? Is this all about God? And what is God? A mystical concept? All I know that if we surrender to the will of God, if we pray and repent for our sins, we will be saved out of our trouble and we will get peace of mind. To me, my dance is my God. Through my dance I have touched the essence of spirituality."

In Between Realms: The Search For Feminine Selfhood In The Essais Of Montaigne, Anna Suarez Dec 2018

In Between Realms: The Search For Feminine Selfhood In The Essais Of Montaigne, Anna Suarez

Comparative Woman

My purpose is to explore factors of the Renaissance that determined women’s selfhood in Montaigne’s Essais. I argue that the shift into modernity is responsible for the loss of women’s autonomy as well as the anxiety experienced by men regarding their power as well as their potential. Montaigne and Renaissance discourse defines women only by their bodies (sexual organs) and I explore the elements that established biological essentialism. This paper exemplifies comparative literature in the sense that it combines literature, theory, and art for the purpose of creating a well-researched examination of the root causes for why women were …
