Greenhouse Gas Emissions As Influenced By Nitrogen Fertilization And Harvest Residue Management In Sugarcane Production, Sanku Dattamudi, Jim Jian Wang, Syam K. Dodla, H. P. Viator, Ron Delaune, April Hiscox, Murali Darapuneni, Changyoon Jeong, Patrick Colyer Jan 2019

Greenhouse Gas Emissions As Influenced By Nitrogen Fertilization And Harvest Residue Management In Sugarcane Production, Sanku Dattamudi, Jim Jian Wang, Syam K. Dodla, H. P. Viator, Ron Delaune, April Hiscox, Murali Darapuneni, Changyoon Jeong, Patrick Colyer

Faculty Publications

Core Ideas: Application of urea led to higher N2O emissions than urea–ammonium nitrate in sugarcane. Residue retention led to higher N2O and CH4 emissions irrespective of N source. Both N source and residue management did not affect CO2 emissions. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is a major row-crop in the southern United States with high rates of N-fertilizer application and unique harvest-residue management. A 2-yr field experiment was conducted to investigate different N-fertilizer effects (urea and urea ammonium nitrate, UAN) and harvest-residue managements (residue-retain, RR, and residue-burn, RB) on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from soils under sugarcane production. In 2012, a split-plot …

A Finite Element Method For A Phase Field Model Of Nematic Liquid Crystal Droplets, Amanda E. Diegel, Shawn W. Walker Jan 2019

A Finite Element Method For A Phase Field Model Of Nematic Liquid Crystal Droplets, Amanda E. Diegel, Shawn W. Walker

Faculty Publications

We develop a novel finite element method for a phase field model of nematic liquid crystal droplets. The continuous model considers a free energy comprised of three components: the Ericksen’s energy for liquid crystals, the Cahn-Hilliard energy representing the interfacial energy of the droplet, and an anisotropic weak anchoring energy that enforces a condition such that the director field is aligned perpendicular to the interface of the droplet. Applications of the model are for finding minimizers of the free energy and exploring gradient flow dynamics. We present a finite element method that utilizes a special discretization of the liquid crystal …

Mathematical Modeling Of Frontal Polymerization, John A. Pojman Jan 2019

Mathematical Modeling Of Frontal Polymerization, John A. Pojman

Faculty Publications

© EDP Sciences, 2019 Frontal polymerization is way to convert liquid resin into a solid material with a self-propagating reaction. The reaction spreads like a flame from the heat of the reaction that diffuses into neighboring regions, starting more reaction. The frontal velocity has been accurately modeled for free-radical polymerization systems. The dynamics of fronts have been studied theoretically and experimentally. If the viscosity of the initial medium is low, then fronts can become unstable due to buoyancy-driven convection. A fascinating aspect of frontal polymerization is that fronts often do not propagate as a plane waves but exhibit complex modes …

Kms Conditions, Standard Real Subspaces And Reflection Positivity On The Circle Group, Karl Hermann Neeb, Gestur Ólafsson Jan 2019

Kms Conditions, Standard Real Subspaces And Reflection Positivity On The Circle Group, Karl Hermann Neeb, Gestur Ólafsson

Faculty Publications

We continue our investigations of the representation theoretic side of reflection positivity by studying positive definite functions Ψ on the additive group (ℝ, +) satisfying a suitably defined KMS condition. These functions take values in the space Bil (V) of bilinear forms on a real vector space V. As in quantum statistical mechanics, the KMS condition is defined in terms of an analytic continuation of Ψ to the strip [z ∈ : 0 ≥ Imz ≥ β] with a coupling condition Ψ (iβ + t) = Ψ (t) on the boundary. Our first main result consists of a characterization of …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Tooth Wear On Bovid Identification, Juliet K. Brophy, Gregory J. Matthews, George K. Thiruvathukal Jan 2019

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Tooth Wear On Bovid Identification, Juliet K. Brophy, Gregory J. Matthews, George K. Thiruvathukal

Faculty Publications

Previous research provides a method for reducing the subjectivity in taxonomic identification of species in the family Bovidae by quantifying the occlusal surface of molar teeth using elliptical Fourier analysis. In this current study, we specifically test what effect medium to late tooth wear has on the identification of bovids when using the form (size and shape) of the occlusal surface to classify specimens. To achieve this, the classification results of teeth with ≥85% of their occlusal surface (training data set) were compared with the results of teeth with 87% of the time with both Alcelaphini and Reduncini classifying correctly …

Undergraduate International Student Enrollment Forecasting Model: An Application Of Time Series Analysis, Yu April Chen, Ran Li, Linda Serra Hagedorn

Faculty Publications

This study developed statistical models to forecast international undergraduate student enrollment at a Midwest university. The authors constructed a Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average model with input variables to estimate future enrollment. This model reflected enrollment patterns by semester through highlighting seasonality. Further, authors added input variables such as visa policy changes, the rapid increase of Chinese undergraduate enrollment, and tuition rate into the model estimation. The visa policy change and the increase of Chinese undergraduate enrollment were significant predictors of international undergraduate enrollment. The effect of tuition rates was significant but minimal in magnitude. Findings of this study generate …

Civil War In The Southwest Borderlands, 1861-1867, Robert L. Glaze Jan 2019

Civil War In The Southwest Borderlands, 1861-1867, Robert L. Glaze

Civil War Book Review

Civil War historiography has been well served by the recent proliferation of borderland studies. This burgeoning corner of the conflict’s literature has added nuance to our understanding of emancipation, the war in Appalachia, the Confederate diaspora, the Native American experience, and the war’s transnational dimensions. Civil War in the Southwest Borderlands by Andrew E. Masich is an accessible and well-researched addition to the literature.

In this sweeping, largely narrative history, Masich argues “that cultural groups fought civil wars in the Southwest Borderlands concurrent with and connected to the American Civil War and that such wars often occur when two or …

Women And The American Civil War: North-South Counterpoints, Lance Janda Jan 2019

Women And The American Civil War: North-South Counterpoints, Lance Janda

Civil War Book Review

In Women and the American Civil War: North-South Counterpoints, Professors Judith Giesberg and Randall M. Miller have assembled a very strong edited collection of 16 essays designed to integrate women’s and Civil War history and to systematically compare the experiences of women across regional boundaries and throughout the entire Civil War era. The goal of the work is to confront what Giesberg and Miller consider the segregation and racial gendering of many histories of the period, and to broaden and deepen our understanding of the wide array of women’s experiences and their still underappreciated importance in any effort to …

I Am Perhaps Dying: The Medical Backstory Of Spinal Tuberculosis Hidden In The Civil War Diary Of Leroy Wiley Grishman, Peter J. D'Onofrio

Civil War Book Review

This volume is a companion piece to The War Outside My Window. The Civil War Diary of LeRoy Wiley Gresham, 1860-1865. Invalid teenager Leroy Wiley Gresham left a seven-volume diary spanning the years of secession and the Civil War (1860-1865). He was just 12 when he began and he died at 17, just weeks after the war ended. His remarkable account, recently published as The War Outside My Window: The Civil War Diary of LeRoy Wiley Gresham, 1860-1865, edited by Janet E. Croon (2018), spans the gamut of life events that were of interest to a precocious and …

Coast-To-Coast Empire: Manifest Destiny And The New Mexico Borderlands, Janne Lahti Jan 2019

Coast-To-Coast Empire: Manifest Destiny And The New Mexico Borderlands, Janne Lahti

Civil War Book Review

Billy Kiser, an Assistant Professor of History at Texas A & M University – San Antonio, is one remarkably productive historian. This time he has written an engaging and interesting study of the first decades of United States conquest in New Mexico. Kiser proposes that the Santa Fe trade, the American military occupation during the Mexican-American War, the antebellum Indian wars, the slavery question, the transcontinental railroad speculations, and the Civil War should be seen as “a single, interconnected process of imposed political and ideological transformation” (p. 13). While arguing that New Mexico mattered in the era’s national context more …

Crossing The Deadlines: Civil War Prisons Reconsidered, Angela M. Riotto

Civil War Book Review

In the volume’s foreword, John T. Hubbell, professor emeritus at Kent State University, succinctly summarized the historiography of Civil War prisons, remarking, “It seems that prisons and prisoners have been…a part of the narrative, yet somehow strangely apart from it.” Seeking to remedy this disconnect, Michael P. Gray, author of The Business of Captivity: Elmira and its Civil War Prisons (2001), tasked eight scholars to “reconsider” Civil War prisons and prisoners of war (POWs) and scholars’ interpretations of the topic. The result, Crossing the Deadlines: Civil War Prisons Reconsidered, is an enlightening essay collection that highlights the latest methodologies …

Race And Education In New Orleans: Creating The Segregated City, 1764-1960, William A. Link Jan 2019

Race And Education In New Orleans: Creating The Segregated City, 1764-1960, William A. Link

Civil War Book Review

Race and Education in New Orleans considers an important question for American historians: What forces created racial segregation? Using schooling as a focal point, Walter Stern skillfully unpacks the complex factors underlying white supremacy and the city’s social and racial order. Although New Orleans is critical for students of urban America, it possessed distinctive features that, over time, became transformed into a pattern resembling the rest the country.

Look At Lincoln: Leadership: In Turbulent Times, Frank J. Williams Jan 2019

Look At Lincoln: Leadership: In Turbulent Times, Frank J. Williams

Civil War Book Review

Doris Kearns Goodwin discusses the four courageous and effective leaders she knows best: Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson. She examines their genuine leadership including their successes and failures. The four were ambitious and had a deep-rooted resilience that permitted them to overcome adversity. Despite confronting political necessities, they had the moral virtue to think primarily of “the whole” rather than just their own individual interest.

War, Memory, And The 1913 Gettysburg Reunion, Brian Matthew Jordan Jan 2019

War, Memory, And The 1913 Gettysburg Reunion, Brian Matthew Jordan

Civil War Book Review

Black-and-white photographs of former enemies gripping hands across the low, stone fence that rambles down Cemetery Ridge are among the most iconic images of Civil War veterans. Snapped at the fiftieth anniversary reunion in Gettysburg, an event that organizers billed as the “Peace Jubilee,” these disarming scenes came to epitomize the swift exceptionalism of sectional reconciliation in the decades after the Civil War. In 1990, documentarian Ken Burns successfully exploited the emotional power of those photographs—together with sepia-toned newsreel footage of the final reunion of Union and Confederate veterans, held in Gettysburg in 1938—in his nine-part PBS film series. A …

A Strife Of Tongues: The Compromise Of 1850 And The Ideological Foundations Of The American Civil War, Joshua A. Lynn

Civil War Book Review

Antebellum politicians knew that words mattered. In 1856 Louisianan Judah P. Benjamin complained in the Senate that remarks made by antislavery colleague William H. Seward “will be spread through the machinery of the federal post office. It is printed in your [Congressional] Globe. It will be read, probably, by millions of people.” “No such faint voice as mine,” Benjamin whined, “can follow it to every village, to every hamlet, to every cottage to which it has spread.”The prospect of antislavery sentiment invading southern villages, hamlets, and cottages worried this slaveholding politician. Years after the Compromise of 1850 had supposedly achieved …

Accounting For Slavery: Masters And Management, Joshua D. Rothman Jan 2019

Accounting For Slavery: Masters And Management, Joshua D. Rothman

Civil War Book Review

If there is a central human character in Caitlin Rosenthal’s book about recordkeeping, accounting, and slavery, his name is Thomas Affleck. Born in Scotland, Affleck migrated to the United States in the 1830s. He eventually ended up in southwestern Mississippi, where he found the methods used by his fellow slaveholding cotton planters to manage and measure their operations irregular and inadequate for effectively gauging productivity over time. Drawing in part on his previous experience as a bookkeeper for the Bank of Scotland, Affleck crafted an accounting journal for his overseers to use, and in the late 1840s, he published the …

The Last Battleground: The Civil War Comes To North Carolina, Robert Wooster Jan 2019

The Last Battleground: The Civil War Comes To North Carolina, Robert Wooster

Civil War Book Review

The Last Battleground consists of forty-three chapters adopted from essays originally published over fifty installments in Our State: Celebrating North Carolina, a popular magazine, during the four-year sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Each chapter represents a self-contained story of some aspect of the war involving North Carolina, with an eye toward emphasizing the intensely personal nature of the terrible conflict. As Gerard explains of his original goals (p. ix), “The stories would not be sweeping accounts of regimental maneuvers in battle but personal tales of people making the hardest choices of their lives.” In so doing, the author captures …

From Slave To Statesman: The Life Of Educator, Editor, And Civil Rights Activist Willis M. Carter Of Virginia, Fred L. Johnson

Civil War Book Review

In the book From Slave to Statesman: The Life of Educator, Editor, and Civil Rights Activist Willis M. Carter of Virginia, authors Robert Heinrich and Deborah Harding present a robust analysis of the life and times of this dynamic African American who battled against the suffocating social boundaries prescribed for blacks in the late nineteenth century. Born into bondage like his contemporary, educator and indomitable self-help advocate Booker T. Washington, Willis M. Carter proved that his enslaved origins were no deterrent to his capitalizing upon every opportunity made possible by freedom.

Look At Lincoln: Becoming Lincoln, Frank J. Williams Jan 2019

Look At Lincoln: Becoming Lincoln, Frank J. Williams

Civil War Book Review

Becoming Lincoln is a study of Abraham Lincoln’s life before his presidency, which focuses not on his successes, but on his failures. Beginning with his youth, the volume addresses Lincoln’s early political setbacks from defeats at the ballot box to his time in the Illinois state legislature, a length of four terms that the author considers less than successful. This captivating book focuses on Lincoln’s journey to the presidency, alongside the recently released Sydney Blumenthal’s series The Political Life of Abraham Lincoln and David Herbert Donald’s Lincoln.

All the while, Professor Freehling, Emeritus, University of Kentucky, avoids David Donald’s …

Thermogenic dry gas flowed from Jurassic sections in the DH5R research well drilled onshore in Adventdalen, central Spitsbergen, Arctic Norway. The DH5R gas originates from the organic-rich units of the mudstone-dominated Middle Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Agardhfjellet Formation, which is the onshore equivalent to the Fuglen Formation and the prolific oil and gas generating Hekkingen Formation in the southern Barents Shelf. Low-permeable, low-porosity sandstones from the Upper Triassic De Geerdalen Formation of the neighbouring DH4 well were oil-stained and gas was also collected from this interval. Gas from the two stratigraphic intervals have different compositions; the gas from the Agardhfjellet …

Evidence For Fe-Si-O Liquid Immiscibility At Deep Earth Pressures, Sarah M. Arveson, Jie Deng, Bijaya B. Karki, Kanani K.M. Lee

Faculty Publications

Seismic observations suggest that the uppermost region of Earth's liquid outer core is buoyant, with slower velocities than the bulk outer core. One possible mechanism for the formation of a stably stratified layer is immiscibility in molten iron alloy systems, which has yet to be demonstrated at core pressures. We find immiscibility between liquid Fe-Si and Fe-Si-O persisting to at least 140 GPa through a combination of laser-heated diamond-anvil cell experiments and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. High-pressure immiscibility in the Fe-Si-O system may explain a stratified layer atop the outer core, complicate differentiation and evolution of the deep Earth, and …
