Marketing The Blue & Gray: Newspaper Advertising And The American Civil War, Michael E. Woods Jan 2019

Marketing The Blue & Gray: Newspaper Advertising And The American Civil War, Michael E. Woods

Civil War Book Review

Scholarly study of the Civil War-era press is robust. Thanks to specialized conferences and a steady output of books and articles, we know a lot about how publishers, editors, and correspondents satisfied the ravenous popular hunger for war news and, in the process, reshaped American journalism. Despite their extensive analysis of wartime newspapers, however, scholars have made sustained use of perhaps only half of the available material, because few have closely examined advertisements. Yet ads of all sorts proliferated during the conflict, as sellers seized the opportunity to reach growing numbers of subscribers, while publishers grew increasingly dependent on advertising …

Look At Lincoln: All The Powers Of Earth: The Political Life Of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. Iii, 1856-1860, Frank J. Williams

Civil War Book Review

All the Powers of Earth is the third volume by Sidney Blumenthal’s biography of Lincoln and the history of the United States during that era. Covering Lincoln and the country as it marches towards civil war, it is the most riveting of Blumenthal’s first three volumes and leaves this reviewer anticipating the final two volumes.

Dosage Compensation Of The X Chromosomes In Bovine Germline, Early Embryos, And Somatic Tissues, Zongliang Jiang Jan 2019

Dosage Compensation Of The X Chromosomes In Bovine Germline, Early Embryos, And Somatic Tissues, Zongliang Jiang

Faculty Publications

Dosage compensation of the mammalian X chromosome (X) was proposed by Susumu Ohno as a mechanism wherein the inactivation of one X in females would lead to doubling the expression of the other. This would resolve the dosage imbalance between eutherian females (XX) versus male (XY) and between a single active X versus autosome pairs (A). Expression ratio of X- and A-linked genes has been relatively well studied in humans and mice, despite controversial results over the existence of upregulation of X-linked genes. Here we report the first comprehensive test of Ohno's hypothesis in bovine preattachment embryos, germline, and somatic …

Civil War Obscura: Barracoon: The Story Of The Last “Black Cargo", Meg Groeling Jan 2019

Civil War Obscura: Barracoon: The Story Of The Last “Black Cargo", Meg Groeling

Civil War Book Review

Author and historian/folklorist Zora Neale Hurston, who died in obscurity in 1960, is back on the bookshelves in a significant way. Her first book, Barracoon, has finally been published. She completed the work in 1931 but could never interest publishers in the true saga of Cudjo Lewis, thought to be the last living person enslaved in Africa and transported to the United States by the slave ship Clotilda. Part of the reason the book encountered obstacles was the inclusion of dialect in Hurston's interviews with Kossula, Lewis's African name. Another part was the topic itself. Not only is …

Selling The Sights: The Invention Of The Tourist In American Culture, Sean Adams Jan 2019

Selling The Sights: The Invention Of The Tourist In American Culture, Sean Adams

Civil War Book Review

For most of human history, long-distance trips were, at best, a hassle and, at worst, life-threatening. Descriptions of travel during the early years of American independence, for example, abound with muddy roads, wretched food, dismal sleeping arrangements, and a general unhealthiness. Abigail Adams dreaded the trip back to Massachusetts from the new capital at Washington in 1801 as “a mountain before me,” as a result of the “many horrid Rivers to cross and such Roads to traverse.” Even elite travelers like Adams needed a few days of rest just to recover from the journey itself. What impact, then, would a …

Approaching Civil War And Southern History, Jessica Cannon Jan 2019

Approaching Civil War And Southern History, Jessica Cannon

Civil War Book Review

In retrospective snapshots looking across a long and distinguished scholarly career, Approaching the Civil War and Southern History collects together ten essays written by William J. Cooper, Boyd Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University. Individually these essays, initially published between 1970 and 2012, broadly examine a variety of topics in the Civil War-era South ranging from the leadership of Jefferson Davis to an analysis of the viability of cotton production. Taken together they highlight the clear argumentation and lucid prose that has long been a hallmark of William Cooper’s work.

Barbituric Derivative Nanoaggregates With Aggregation-Induced Emission And Mechanofluorochromism, Xi Su, Hanjun Zhang, Kaiyue You, Hua Wang, Yuezhi Cui, William W. Yu

Faculty Publications

© 2019 Xi Su et al. Three new nonplanar barbituric derivatives, named as TTB, TTTB, and TOB, were synthesized. The D-π-A type conjugated compounds showed obvious intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) property, which was evidenced by theoretical calculations and spectral analyses. All of them exhibited aggregation induced emission (AIE) when formed nanoaggregates. These nanoaggregates also showed reversible mechanofluorochromism (MFC). Their red light emission became deep red after grinding and then recovered with dichloromethane fuming. Hence, a strategy to fabricate mechanofluorochromic nanoaggregate phosphors via nonplanar π-skeleton and steric effect was demonstrated, and these nanophosphors possess potentials for mechanosensors and anticounterfeiting technology.

Electrochemical Epitaxial Growth Of Tio2/Cds/Pbs Nanocables, Peng Wang, Zhongyang Zhang, Hua Wang, Tieqiang Zhang, Haining Cui, Yue Yang, William W. Yu

Faculty Publications

© 2019 Peng Wang et al. Electrochemical deposition as a liquid phase epitaxial growth method is widely used to fabricate different kinds of hierarchical structures. As a typical heterostructure, TiO2/PbS is widely utilized in the areas of photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Oriented TiO2 nanorod (NR) arrays can provide direct pathways for the electron transport of photoanode. However, the lattice mismatch between TiO2 NR sides and PbS is very large; PbS nanoparticles (NPs) only formed on the top of TiO2 NRs. To solve this problem, TiO2/CdS core/shell nanocables were firstly prepared electrochemically because the lattice ratio between TiO2 and CdS was 0.916; …

Californios, Anglos, And The Performance Of Oligarchy In The U.S. West, Evan Rothera Jan 2019

Californios, Anglos, And The Performance Of Oligarchy In The U.S. West, Evan Rothera

Civil War Book Review

Andrew Gibb, currently assistant professor of theater history, theory, and criticism at Texas Tech University, offers an important revision of modern understandings of the U.S. West, particularly California. “Despite the individualist ideology that valorizes the working-class Anglos frontiersman,” Gibb asserts, “the truth is that ever since he began to arrive in the West, he had led a life dominated by local oligarchs (1). As Anglos arrived in California, they discovered a uniquely californio (Mexican Californian) system of social organization. This book draws heavily on theory, particularly the idea of performance, to demonstrate how public events both celebrate and proclaim the …

Black Litigants In The Antebellum American South, Jason A. Gillmer Jan 2019

Black Litigants In The Antebellum American South, Jason A. Gillmer

Civil War Book Review

Kimberly Welch has written a superb book. In Black Litigants in the Antebellum American South, Welch invites her reader into the local courtrooms in the Natchez district of Mississippi and Louisiana to witness a version of the slave South that, until recently, few historians had bothered to tell, or perhaps had even imagined. It is a version that shows persons of color—free and enslaved—as litigators, as people using the law to actively protect their interests and shape their own destinies.

Data

Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 17GTLSU12. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:

"Geological faulting has been implicated as a contributor to subsidence, coastal land-loss and submergence of marshlands in southern Louisiana. This report reviews whether fault motion, either by slow creep or more sudden slip, can cause deformation of engineered structures resulting in increased infrastructure maintenance and repair costs. The impact of surface, or near-surface, geologic faulting on critical infrastructure is insufficiently documented in southeastern Louisiana, but the state has a vast amount of energy-sector subsurface data that to date has been under-utilized for …

Petersburg To Appomattox: The End Of The War In Virginia, Christian B. Keller

Civil War Book Review

In this latest installment of UNC Press’s Military Campaigns of the Civil War series, Caroline E. Janney has made a strong mark for herself as Gary W. Gallagher’s literary successor. Most readers will be familiar with the storied list of previous titles in the series, the last of which on the end of the Overland Campaign and the Siege of Petersburg saw Janney and Gallagher team up as co-editors. That was a fine volume. This one is possibly even better.

One big reason this book succeeds is the uniform quality of writing among the nine essays, which range from traditional …

A Fierce Glory: Antietam—The Desperate Battle That Saved Lincoln And Doomed Slavery, Mark A. Neels Jan 2019

A Fierce Glory: Antietam—The Desperate Battle That Saved Lincoln And Doomed Slavery, Mark A. Neels

Civil War Book Review

The bloodiest single day in American military history, the Battle of Antietam was also a pivotal moment in the Civil War that is nonetheless often overshadowed by more infamous battles such as Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Gettysburg. Still, a number of good full-length accounts do exist. Among them are James Murphin’s The Gleam of Bayonets (1965), John Michael Priest’s Antietam: The Soldier’s Battle (1989), Stephen Sears’ Landscape Turned Red (1993), and James McPherson’s Crossroads of Freedom (2002). Besides the staggering numbers of casualties, perhaps what most attracts scholars and Civil War enthusiasts to this particular battle is the fame (or infamy) …

Bibliometrics For Faculty Evaluation: A Statistical Comparison Of H-Indexes Generated Using Google Scholar And Web Of Science Data, David J. Dunaway

Faculty Publications

The growing need for quantification of research performance for promotion and tenure

and grant funding decisions has lead many to rely on citation metrics. There are many metrics to choose from but one of the most common is the h-index. While the h-index has been criticized by many, the metric itself is not the only concern. The source of the citation information used to calculate the h-index is also important. In this case study the h-index was calculated using citation data from Clarivate’s Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar (GS) for a selection of faculty working at a large …

Quantifying Amphibian Range Fragmentation In The Southeastern United States, Catherine E. Newman, Christopher C. Austin Jan 2019

Quantifying Amphibian Range Fragmentation In The Southeastern United States, Catherine E. Newman, Christopher C. Austin

Faculty Publications

© the authors. An often overlooked component of research on factors that drive amphibian geographic distributions is description of species range shape. Broad-scale range disjunction has implications for phylogeography, ecology, and conservation, but descriptions of fragmentation are usually based on subjective visual assessment of range maps. Here, we describe a method for objectively quantifying range fragmentation and use this method to describe the patterns of amphibian species range shapes in the southeastern United States, home to the highest amphibian species richness in North America. Species ranges varied widely in degree of fragmentation, from completely contiguous to highly fragmented, and degree …

Bottom-Up Trait-Mediated Indirect Effects Decrease Pathogen Transmission In A Tritrophic System, Bret D. Elderd Jan 2019

Bottom-Up Trait-Mediated Indirect Effects Decrease Pathogen Transmission In A Tritrophic System, Bret D. Elderd

Faculty Publications

© 2018 by the Ecological Society of America A plant's induction of secondary defenses helps to decrease herbivore damage by changing resource quality. While these chemical or physical defenses may directly decrease herbivory, they can also have indirect consequences. In a tritrophic system consisting of a plant, an insect herbivore, and an insect pathogen, plant based trait-mediated indirect effects (TMIEs) can alter host–pathogen interactions and, thereby, indirectly affect disease transmission. In a series of field experiments, individual soybean plants (Glycine max) were sprayed with either a jasmonic acid (JA) solution to trigger induction of plant defenses or a similar control …

Effective Multi-Scale Approach To The Schrödinger Cocycle Over A Skew-Shift Base, R. Han, M. Lemm, W. Schlag Jan 2019

Effective Multi-Scale Approach To The Schrödinger Cocycle Over A Skew-Shift Base, R. Han, M. Lemm, W. Schlag

Faculty Publications

We prove a conditional theorem on the positivity of the Lyapunov exponent for a Schrödinger cocycle over a skew-shift base with a cosine potential and the golden ratio as frequency. For coupling below 1, which is the threshold for Herman's subharmonicity trick, we formulate three conditions on the Lyapunov exponent in a finite but large volume and on the associated large-deviation estimates at that scale. Our main results demonstrate that these finite-size conditions imply the positivity of the infinite-volume Lyapunov exponent. This paper shows that it is possible to make the techniques developed for the study of Schrödinger operators with …

A Proposed Framework For The Evaluation Of Academic Librarian Scholarship, Rachel Borchardt, Polly Boruff-Jones, Sigrid Kelsey, Jennifer Matthews Jan 2019

A Proposed Framework For The Evaluation Of Academic Librarian Scholarship, Rachel Borchardt, Polly Boruff-Jones, Sigrid Kelsey, Jennifer Matthews

Faculty Publications

The ACRL Impactful Scholarship and Metrics Task Force has created a framework draft that is designed to help librarians and libraries contextualize their impact within academic librarianship. To create this framework, the task force studied existing disciplinary models, institutional guidelines, and surveyed academic librarians. The task force discovered few standard practices regarding impact measurement from disciplinary societies or in institutional documentation, but did find some larger models outlining distinct impact areas. The proposed framework outlines evaluation in two primary impact areas for academic librarians, scholarly and practitioner impact, with suggested metrics for a range of research outputs in each category. …

Synoptic View Of Lithospheric S-Wave Velocity Structure In The Southern United States: A Comparison Of 3d Seismic Tomographic Models, Alden Netto, Jay Pulliam, Patricia Persaud

Faculty Publications

The southern U.S. continental margin records a history spanning ca. 1.2 Ga, including two Wilson cycles. However, due to a thick sediment cover, the paucity of significant local seismicity, and, until recently, sparse instrumentation, details of this passive margin's tectonomagmatic evolution remain disputed. This paper compares recent S-wave tomography and crustal thickness models based on USArray data to help establish a framework for geodynamic interpretation. Large-scale patterns of crustal velocity anomalies, corresponding to major regional features such as the Ouachita orogenic front and the Precambrian margin, are generally consistent between the models. The spatial extent of smaller-scale tectonic features, such …

A Note On The Connectivity Of 2-Polymatroid Minors, Zachary Gershkoff, James Oxley Jan 2019

A Note On The Connectivity Of 2-Polymatroid Minors, Zachary Gershkoff, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Brylawski and Seymour independently proved that if M is a connected matroid with a connected minor N, and e ∈ E(M) − E(N), then M\e or M/e is connected having N as a minor. This paper proves an analogous but somewhat weaker result for 2-polymatroids. Specifically, if M is a connected 2-polymatroid with a proper connected minor N, then there is an element e of E(M) − E(N) such that M\e or M/e is connected having N as a minor. We also consider what can be said about the uniqueness of the way in which the elements of E(M) − …

Dependencies Among Dependencies In Matroids, James Oxley, Suijie Wang Jan 2019

Dependencies Among Dependencies In Matroids, James Oxley, Suijie Wang

Faculty Publications

In 1971, Rota introduced the concept of derived matroids to investigate “de-pendencies among dependencies” in matroids. In this paper, we study the derived matroid δM of an F-representation of a matroid M. The matroid δM has a naturally associated F-representation, so we can define a sequence δM, δ2M,. The main result classifies such derived sequences of matroids into three types: finite, cyclic, and divergent. For the first two types, we obtain complete characterizations and thereby resolve some of the questions that Longyear posed in 1980 for binary matroids. For the last type, the divergence is estimated by the coranks of …

A Matroid Extension Result, James Oxley Jan 2019

A Matroid Extension Result, James Oxley

Adding elements to matroids can be fraught with difficulty. In the Vámos matroid V 8 , there are four pairs X 1 , X 2 , X 3 , and X 4 that partition E(V 8 ) such that (X 1 ∪ X 2 , X 3 ∪ X 4 ) is a 3-separation while exactly three of the local connectivities (X 1 , X 3 ), (X 1 , X 4 ), (X 2 , X 3 ), and (X 2 , X 4 ) are one, with the fourth being zero. As is well known, there is no …
