Filamentous fungi rapidly evolve in response to environmental selection pressures in part due to their genomic plasticity. Parastagonospora nodorum, a fungal pathogen of wheat and causal agent of septoria nodorum blotch, responds to selection pressure exerted by its host, influencing the gain, loss, or functional diversification of virulence determinants, known as effector genes. Whole genome resequencing of 197 P. nodorum isolates collected from spring, durum, and winter wheat production regions of the United States enabled the examination of effector diversity and genomic regions under selection specific to geographically discrete populations. 1,026,859 SNPs/InDels were used to identify novel loci, as well …

One critical issue in educational programs involves the extent to which graduates are ready to begin employment at program completion. Additionally, most research universities make deliberate efforts to enroll students from other countries. An important question regarding the effectiveness of the programs in these universities is whether the international students have comparable preparation and “Work-Readiness” as the domestic students. This study revealed that on several of the measures associated with “Work-Readiness“ international students had lower levels of “Readiness” than domestic students. Also, other differences were found in the groups on issues such as internship experiences and involvement in scholarly activities.

Larval Pollen Stress Increases Adult Susceptibility To Clothianidin In Honey Bees, Christina L. Mogren, Robert G. Danka, Kristen B. Healy

Neonicotinoid insecticides have come under scrutiny for their potential role in honey bee declines. Additionally, reduced access to forage in agricultural areas creates the potential for risk interactions with these pesticides in regions critical for honey production. In this study, we sought to determine whether sufficient access to pollen during larval development could mitigate stress associated with oral clothianidin exposure in honey bee adults. An apiary was established where pollen traps deprived half of the colonies of pollen, which was then supplemented to the others. Adults were fed 0, 10, 40, 200, or 400 µg/L clothianidin in the laboratory, and …

Newly emerged wheat blast disease is a serious threat to global wheat production. Wheat blast is caused by a distinct, exceptionally diverse lineage of the fungus causing rice blast disease. Through sequencing a recent field isolate, we report a reference genome that includes seven core chromosomes and mini-chromosome sequences that harbor effector genes normally found on ends of core chromosomes in other strains. No mini-chromosomes were observed in an early field strain, and at least two from another isolate each contain different effector genes and core chromosome end sequences. The mini-chromosome is enriched in transposons occurring most frequently at core …

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E.Smith.), is an important pest that has developed resistance to Bt corn in several countries. In this study, leaf-tissue bioassays and whole-plant tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of a Bt-susceptible (aabb), a Cry1A.105/Cry2Ab2 dual-gene resistant (AABB), and a heterozygous (AaBa) genotypes of S. frugiperda on two non-Bt and five pyramided Bt corn traits. The five Bt corn traits were Genuity® VT Double Pro® (VT-2P) containing Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 genes, Optimum®Intrasect® (Intrasect) containing Cry1F and Cry1Ab, Genuity® SmartStax® (SMT) containing Cry1A.105, Cry2Ab2, and Cry1F against lepidopteran pests, Optimum® Leptra® (Leptra) containing Cry1Ab, Cry1F, and …

Management Of Economically Important Insect Pests Of Millet, Ruparao T. Gahukar, Gadi V.P. Reddy, Tom Royer
Faculty Publications
Grain of various species of millet is a staple food of rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and China. In addition, millet is used as poultry and cattle feed in the United States, and the foliage is fodder for cattle in India. The crop is damaged by at least 150 insect pests during its growth and development. Although the current status of all of these pests is not known, shoot flies, stem borers, leaf-sucking, and the panicle-attacking insects are considered economically important. Control measures include the application of synthetic pesticides (as both seed treatment and foliar applications) and …

Reproduction and wing patterns (shape and colouration) in Polygonia c-aureum L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) are regulated by both photoperiod and temperature experienced during the immature stages, which result in the development of summer or autumn forms. The critical day length for this seasonal change in form was 13.5L: 10.5D at 21°C and 13L: 11D at 25°C. We investigated the connection between seasonal form and female reproduction. Under a 15L: 9D photoperiod at 21°C, reproductively active summer form butterflies are produced, whereas under an 8L: 16D photoperiod at 21°C autumn form butterflies with a strong tendency to enter diapause were produced. On …

The insect growth regulator NC-184, a juvenile hormone mimic, prevents moulting to the adult stage in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) (Orthoptera: Acrididae). Male nymphs treated in the penultimate or fi nal nymphal instar with NC-184 exhibit precocious mating behaviour in the fi nal instar. We examined whether this chemical affects the development of the internal reproductive organs of crowded nymphs. In treated males, both accessory glands and seminal vesicles were underdeveloped, and no sperm was found in the seminal vesicle, whereas these organs in control individuals had greatly increased in size 10 days after treatment, when all the …

Elusive Utopia: The Struggle For Racial Equality In Oberlin, Ohio, Angela F. Murphy
Elusive Utopia: The Struggle For Racial Equality In Oberlin, Ohio, Angela F. Murphy
Civil War Book Review
Elusive Utopia is a history of race relations in Oberlin, Ohio from its founding in 1833 through the early 1920s. It is the culmination of decades of study by its authors Gary J. Kornblith and Carol Lasser, both of whom are emeritus professors of history at Oberlin College. Their new book offers a significant widening of scope in our understanding of Oberlin in several ways. First, it expands the investigation of race relations in Oberlin beyond a focus on the progressive interracial college for which Oberlin is famous, taking into consideration the trajectory of race relations in the larger town.
The F Street Mess: How Southern Senators Rewrote The Kansas-Nebraska Act, Randall M. Miller
The F Street Mess: How Southern Senators Rewrote The Kansas-Nebraska Act, Randall M. Miller
Civil War Book Review
In her first book, Alice Elizabeth Malavasic argues that four southern senators who made up the F Street mess from 1853 to 1856 constituted the “most powerful bloc in the U.S. Senate.” (p. 8) During the 1850s, as self-proclaimed heirs of John C. Calhoun’s constitutional ideas and proslavery strategy, these senators used their positions as chairmen of critical senatorial committees to push slavery’s interests vigorously. In Malavasic’s accounting, the friendship and group dynamic of the four Democratic messmates – David Rice Atchison of Missouri, Andrew P. Butler of South Carolina, Robert M.T. Hunter of Virginia, and James M. Mason of …
The Most Complete Political Machine Ever Known: The North’S Union Leagues In The American Civil War, Timothy Wesley
The Most Complete Political Machine Ever Known: The North’S Union Leagues In The American Civil War, Timothy Wesley
Civil War Book Review
Paul Taylor’s The Most Complete Political Machine Ever Known: The North’s Union Leagues in the American Civil War reestablishes the significance of an underappreciated force in America’s political past. Once celebrated roundly for their contributions to Union victory, Union Leaguers have faded somewhat from our collective national memory. However understandable such amnesia might be given the trend of historians in recent decades to question the significance of everyday politics in the lives of wartime northerners, it is nevertheless unfortunate. Indeed, Taylor argues that the collective effect of the Union Leaguers on wartime Northern politics and the broader home front was …
Penitentiaries, Punishment, And Military Prisons: Familiar Responses To An Extraordinary Crisis During The American Civil War, Henry Kamerling
Penitentiaries, Punishment, And Military Prisons: Familiar Responses To An Extraordinary Crisis During The American Civil War, Henry Kamerling
Civil War Book Review
Angela M. Zombek, an assistant professor of history at St. Petersburg College, Clearwater, offers a well-researched monograph examining the similarities between antebellum and Civil War penitentiaries and military prisons. Zombek’s comparative framework not only investigates parallels between these institutions in the early republican, antebellum, and Civil War eras, but she also assesses likenesses in regional northern and southern carceral institutions. In particular, Zombek focuses on both state penitentiaries and military prisons in Washington, D.C., Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, and North Carolina. While the rationale for the selection of these regions and institutions might be explained in more detail, Zombek’s targets are …
The Afterlives Of Specimens: Science, Mourning, And Whitman’S Civil War, Sarah J. Purcell
The Afterlives Of Specimens: Science, Mourning, And Whitman’S Civil War, Sarah J. Purcell
Civil War Book Review
Lindsay Tuggle’s The Afterlives of Specimens offers a provocative, interdisciplinary analysis of Walt Whitman’s Civil War writings that examines the intersection of science and cultural mourning practices in a literary frame. Tuggle posits that Whitman’s books collected and commemorated soldiers in ways deeply influenced by nineteenth-century practices of botany, medicine, autopsy, embalming, and museum curation, the histories of which she explores with good specific evidence. She also provides new readings of Leaves of Grass and some of Whitman’s prose using theoretical apparatus provided by Nicholas Abraham, Judith Butler, Jacques Derrida, Sigmund Freud, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Maria Took. Tuggle argues …
A South Carolina Upcountry Saga: The Civil War Letters Of Barham Bobo Foster And His Family, 1860-1863, Alexia J. Helsley
A South Carolina Upcountry Saga: The Civil War Letters Of Barham Bobo Foster And His Family, 1860-1863, Alexia J. Helsley
Civil War Book Review
A South Carolina Upcountry Saga is a compilation of letters between members of the Foster family during the dramatic early years of the Civil War. The editor, a descendant of Barham Bobo Foster painstakingly located and transcribed the family letters. The letters begin with a terse note from B. B. Foster to a son, dated 20 December 1860, announcing “that South Carolina is out of the Union without a dissenting voice (p. 11) and end in 1863 except for a much later 1894 letter from Eunice Foster Kennedy to her father, B. B. Foster (p.328 ff).
Embattled Freedom, Journeys Through The Civil War Slave Refugee Camps, John F. Marszalek
Embattled Freedom, Journeys Through The Civil War Slave Refugee Camps, John F. Marszalek
Civil War Book Review
This book is an example of the movement in recent years in the publication of books on the American Civil War. For many years, scholars and civil war buffs wrote about the battles of the war and biographies of leading generals and politicians. Then along came the so-called “new military history,” the linking of the military and the social. More recently, scholars, though not usually Civil War buffs, have studied under-reported areas of the war: why the war was fought the way it was, and how the contribution of such groups like women and African-Americans provides an insight into the …
Combat Chaplain: The Life And Civil War Experience Of Rev. James H. Mcneilly, Army Of Tennessee, Robert Miller
Combat Chaplain: The Life And Civil War Experience Of Rev. James H. Mcneilly, Army Of Tennessee, Robert Miller
Civil War Book Review
More books have been written about the Civil War than any other event in American history. Of these some 60,000+ volumes, there is no shortage of diaries, biographies and studies of both legendary figures and virtual unknowns who played their unique roles in America’s most deadly war. While Lincoln books perhaps dominate the field, there is a plethora of titles on generals, unit commanders, artillerymen, infantrymen – and of late, more about key 19th century figures from wider societal perspectives. But of all the books published, perhaps some of the most ignored people, both during the Civil War and …

At The Forefront Of Lee’S Invasion: Retribution, Plunder, And Clashing Cultures On Richard S. Ewell’S Road To Gettysburg, Steven J. Ramold
Civil War Book Review
Campaign histories of the Civil War concentrate their efforts on the subsequent battles that offensives generate, but tend to overlook the movements that lead up to the battles themselves. Robert J. Wynstra’s At the Forefront of Lee’s Invasion: Retribution, Plunder, and Clashing Cultures on Richard S. Ewell’s Road to Gettysburg takes a very different approach in that it is purely an account of one Confederate corps’ movement to battle, with only a cursory description of the Battle of Gettysburg at the end. As the leading element of Robert E. Lee’s incursion into Pennsylvania in 1863, Lt. Gen. Richard Ewell’s II …
Dear Delia: The Civil War Letters Of Captain Henry F. Young, Seventh Wisconsin Infantry, George C. Rable
Dear Delia: The Civil War Letters Of Captain Henry F. Young, Seventh Wisconsin Infantry, George C. Rable
Civil War Book Review
Collections of letters written by company- grade officers often prove more interesting than those from enlisted men or higher-ranking officers. Dear Delia: The Civil War Letters of Captain Henry F. Young, Seventh Wisconsin Infantry certainly confirms that generalization and more. It is one of the best collections of Civil War soldier letters that has been published during the past decade. Henry F. Young was a mill owner who enlisted in the 7th Wisconsin Infantry and rose to the rank of captain. He was a conscientious volunteer who nevertheless revealed to both his wife Delia and his father the gritty realities …

Contested Loyalty: Debates Over Patriotism In The Civil War North, Brian Matthew Jordan
Contested Loyalty: Debates Over Patriotism In The Civil War North, Brian Matthew Jordan
Civil War Book Review
Editor Robert M. Sandow has assembled ten essays that demonstrate the complexities and rich interpretive possibilities of these questions. Contested Loyalty confirms that debates over appropriate wartime behavior reached well beyond the realm of politics, annexing “homes, city streets, places of work and worship, and onto college campuses” (1). No less significantly, this anthology reaches beyond the Midwest (owing to its reputation for shrill Copperheadism, it is the region most frequently associated with questions of loyalty) to consider how these contests played out in New England and the Mid-Atlantic. Refreshingly, only one essay takes the Midwest as its principal focus.
Religion And Faith – The Forgotten Factor Of The Civil War, Robert J. Miller
Religion And Faith – The Forgotten Factor Of The Civil War, Robert J. Miller
Civil War Book Review
In 1861, the world’s most devout country went to war. Soldiers and civilians alike “read the same Bible, prayed to the same God and invoked His aide against the other.” In the antebellum era, organized faith and religion were easily the most important social and cultural values at work in America. Membership in churches grew from 1 in 15 to 1 in 7 Americans. The Second Great Awakening had led to the most prolific period of church growth in world history after the 1st century. Even the non-religious Abraham Lincoln said to an aide, “take all of [the Bible] …
