This work unpacks James’s representational performance and the issues he faced in assimilating himself into English identity during him time on the English throne. He implemented tropes he previously utilized in Scotland, presenting himself as Solomon, David, Constantine, a philosopher-king, and Rex Pacificus. James relied upon print for his public representation, he was an avid writer and seems to have thought of himself as something of a theologian, for he frequently commented upon religious doctrine and paid acute attention to sermons. The purpose of this document is to supply a comprehensive performer’s guide to American composer Kurt Erickson’s Here, Bullet, a song cycle consisting of four songs for baritone and piano set to the poetry of American poet Brian Turner. Additionally, an overview of its unique consortium-based commissioning process will be included in examination of the entrepreneurial nature of its creation.

David Silkenat’s well-written and ambitious book blends cultural, social, and military history to illustrate how Civil War Era-Americans understood surrender, an action seemingly rife with negative connotations. Silkenat, a senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, captures how numerous Civil War soldiers, from individuals to large armies, decided to surrender and, in so doing, contends that the action was not always shameful. Rather, nineteenth-century contemporaries believed that surrender was key to distinguishing between civilized and uncivilized warfare, an idea shaped by early Americans’ relations with Native Americans, whom whites did not trust to uphold surrender terms (10-11). A computational model is developed to assess the effect of wear on the performance of an engine bearing. The model takes into account the variation of the film thickness under dynamic loading due to the wear of the bearing surface and shaft misalignment. The model adopts the mass-conservative cavitation algorithm to account for cavitation. To consider the surface roughness, the average flow model for the hydrodynamic pressure and the Kogut and Etsion model for the elastic-plastic contact pressure are implemented. The Ties That Bind: The Meaning Of Attachment In State Constitutional Revision, 1820-1845, Allison J. Morvant

This thesis examines the changing conception of attachment in state constitutional conventions from 1820 – 1845. During the colonial and early national periods, attachment was defined primarily through property ownership. Accordingly, early state constitutions limited the rights of citizenship, namely suffrage, to free white men who possessed a freehold. Over time, in response to pressure from upwardly mobile white males, state constitutional conventions began to create a new political order based on an expanded definition of attachment: non-propertied white males could exhibit attachment and be granted citizenship through affection, civic virtue, and public duty.

Constraining time is of critical importance to evaluating the rates and relative contributions of processes driving landscape change in sedimentary basins. The geomorphic character of the field setting guides the application of geochronologic or instrumental tools to this problem, because the viability of methods can be highly influenced by geomorphic attributes. For example, sediment yield and the linked potential for organic preservation may govern the usefulness of radiocarbon dating. Similarly, the rate of sediment transport from source to sink may determine the maturity and/or light exposure of mineral grains arriving in the delta and thus the feasibility of luminescence dating. …

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are prevalent in everyday life, ranging from household chemicals, naturally occurring scents from common plants and animals, to industrial-scale chemicals. Many of these VOCs are known to cause adverse health and environmental effects and require regulation to prevent pollution. It occurs because of the alkylation of various bases. These modifications of genes carried through altered creations of proteins ultimately lead to various diseases. Use Of A Behavioral Health Framework To Assess Perceptions Of Hurricane Evacuation Support Services In New Orleans, Louisiana, Aubry Kyle

This dissertation presents research conducted during the hurricane seasons of 2017 and 2018 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The research’s purpose was to assess citizen perceptions of evacuation support services offered during mandatory evacuation events. A prospective quantitative survey and qualitative, open-ended, semi-structured interview assessed perceptions. Both research methods were designed and assessed using the constructs of the Health Belief Model, a public health model created to assess perceived barriers, benefits, risks, severity, self-efficacy, and cues to action regarding health programming. Quantitative research yielded 211 surveys, representing opinions of New Orleans residents within 1-km Euclidian distance of an evacuation pick-up marker. …

Genomic plasticity, including genome reduction and horizontal gene transfer, has been correlated with virulence traits in several species. However, the conservation of virulence genes in species otherwise considered to have limited potential for infection suggests that phenotypic diversity may not be explained solely on the basis of genetic diversity. Instead, differential organization and control of gene regulatory networks may underlie many phenotypic differences. Objective: Alcohol misuse is present in over a quarter of trauma patients. Information in the clinical notes of the electronic health record of trauma patients may be used for phenotyping tasks with natural language processing (NLP) and supervised machine learning. The objective of this study is to train and validate an NLP classifier for identifying patients with alcohol misuse. Materials and Methods: An observational cohort of 1422 adult patients admitted to a trauma center between April 2013 and November 2016. Tim Williams (University of Oregon) and Evan Kutzler (Georgia Southwestern University) have presented a truly remarkable two-way correspondence between Confederate prisoner of war Wash (George Washington) Nelson, Jr. and his fiancée, Mollie Scollay. The couple’s story reflects a people caught in the crosshairs of war. Williams’s expertise in intellectual and gender history, and Kutler’s expertise in Civil War prisons combine to contextualize and interpret Wash’s experience of captivity, through both his letters to Mollie and his post-war memoirs, and Mollie’s experiences on the home front, which included her perception of Wash’s imprisonment.
