The Role Of Affect In Service Encounter Satisfaction: An Experimental Study., Rama Kumari Jayanti Jan 1992

The Role Of Affect In Service Encounter Satisfaction: An Experimental Study., Rama Kumari Jayanti

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of the dissertation was to address the influence of affect towards service provider on service encounter satisfaction. The following research questions were examined: (1) the impact of affect towards the service provider on perceived performance and satisfaction; (2) the relative influence of affective versus cognitive variables in explaining satisfaction with services; (3) the explanatory ability of the disconfirmation model of satisfaction within the context of services. An experimental study was designed to address the above questions. Two factors, affect towards the service provider labeled Evaluative Impression of the service provider and Interaction Style (one dimension of perceived performance) …

Students' Use Of Teacher Feedback During Badminton Instruction., Nyit Chin Keh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the relationship between teacher feedback variables, student process variables, and student achievement. Another purpose was to investigate the mediating role of student process variables in student achievement. The subjects were 41 college students enrolled in two beginning badminton classes, and an experienced physical education teacher volunteered to teach both classes. Ten 45 minute instructional sessions took place over a 5 week period. Each class session was videotaped for subsequent coding. Subjects were pretested, posttested, and given a retention test on three badminton skills, the forehand high serve, the forehand overhead clear, and the backhand overhead clear. Student …

A Comparison Of The Physiological Responses Of Brain-Damaged Alcoholics, Nonbrain-Damaged Alcoholics, And Social Drinkers To The Smell Of Alcohol., Fredric D. Klug Jan 1992

A Comparison Of The Physiological Responses Of Brain-Damaged Alcoholics, Nonbrain-Damaged Alcoholics, And Social Drinkers To The Smell Of Alcohol., Fredric D. Klug

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study reviews the relapse prevention and neuropsychological literature relevant to alcoholism. The argument was made that impaired neuropsychological functioning may be an important determinant of relapse. Specifically, neuropsychological impairment was expected to affect the manner in which individuals respond to conditioned alcohol cues so as to increase their attention to the cues and increase their desire to drink, a process which might adversely affect recovery. In order to study the impact of conditioned alcohol cues, subjective, objective, and psychophysiological responses of brain-damaged alcoholics, nonbrain-damaged alcoholics, and nonbrain-damaged social drinkers were compared on their responses to alcohol and to water. …

Bibl. Nat. Ms. Fr. 379: A Study In Word And Image. (Volumes I And Ii)., Adelaide Stuart Frazier Jan 1992

Bibl. Nat. Ms. Fr. 379: A Study In Word And Image. (Volumes I And Ii)., Adelaide Stuart Frazier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Bibl. Nat. ms. fr. 379 offers a religious, social, literary and artistic comment on the implications of the early sixteenth century world. The cult of the Virgin is considered as it supported and directed the poetry contests or puy at Rouen and Dieppe in their particular emphases on the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption of the Virgin, both ideas more dogmatic than scriptural. The conduct of the puy controlled the literary and artistic expressions on the subject. A detailed discussion submits the evidence that the poets reflected the secular world in their poems and the artists' illustrations often rejected …

The Relation Between Stress And Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus: Physiologic Arousal Or Disruption Of Compliance?, Virginia Diane Garrett Jan 1992

The Relation Between Stress And Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus: Physiologic Arousal Or Disruption Of Compliance?, Virginia Diane Garrett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relations between minor life events, compliance, urinary free cortisol, and blood glucose in 40 adults with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus was examined. Specifically, this study explored whether naturally-occurring minor stressful events had disruptive effects on metabolic control through: (a) an arousal mechanism mediated by cortisol, (b) disruption of the individual's adherence to prescribed treatment, (c) a combination of arousal and disruption of compliance, or (d) a third, unspecified mechanism. Stress did not influence metabolic control, either independently or via a stress-compliance or stress-arousal mechanism although stress was related to cortisol activity. Neither the direct effects of cortisol nor a cortisol …

Consumer Evaluation Of Product-Related Injuries: The Development And Empirical Testing Of A Behavioral Model Of The Product Liability Process., Bryce Mitchell Griffin Jan 1992

Consumer Evaluation Of Product-Related Injuries: The Development And Empirical Testing Of A Behavioral Model Of The Product Liability Process., Bryce Mitchell Griffin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study strives to provide a better understanding of consumer evaluation of product liability cases. A model of consumer perceptions of the liability process, based predominantly on attribution theory, is developed and tested. The research first develops a general attributional model of the liability process, identifies relevant managerially-controllable dimensions of liability cases, and then tests consumer reaction to these factors utilizing experimental scenarios. The influence of several consumer-juror individual difference variables on the evaluation of liability cases is examined. In addition, potential mediators of the product liability process, including assessment of responsibility and affective evaluation of the plaintiff and defendant, …

Centralization And Decentralization: The Relationship Of Bureaucracy, Autonomy And The Principalship In Elementary Schools., Cheryl Berot Boutte Jan 1992

Centralization And Decentralization: The Relationship Of Bureaucracy, Autonomy And The Principalship In Elementary Schools., Cheryl Berot Boutte

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Throughout the last decade, parents and communities have continued to press for more control over their schools in an attempt to improve performance. Members of the educational community have begun calling for school restructuring to return decision making power to the school site professionals. These calls for the decentralization of our highly centralized school systems have prompted educators, researchers and political scientists to examine the organizational settings in which schools operate. This study investigated the influence of organizational structure, namely centralized bureaucracy and decentralized autonomy on school leadership and the relationship of that leadership to the school's culture. The study …

Codependency Issues In Selected Contemporary American Plays., Jill Stapleton Bergeron Jan 1992

Codependency Issues In Selected Contemporary American Plays., Jill Stapleton Bergeron

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Codependency is defined in this study as a disease characterized by individual adult inability to function in everyday life, in particular regards to personal relationships with others, in a healthy and self-loving manner. The study points to the works of several prominent theorists and practitioners in this field, such as John Bradshaw, Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse, Anne Wilson Schaef, and John and Linda Friel, as authoritative resource material on the subject. Being progressive in nature, codependency eventually leads to a host of severe personality and physical disorders, and usually to some form of suicide. The study points to abusive treatment in childhood--either …

Effects Of Imagery-Eliciting Strategies On Imagery Processing, Memory, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Intentions From Print Advertisements., Laurie Anne Babin Jan 1992

Effects Of Imagery-Eliciting Strategies On Imagery Processing, Memory, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Intentions From Print Advertisements., Laurie Anne Babin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation research examined four research questions. First, the question of whether or not imagery processing could be measured was addressed. It was assumed that mental imagery does exist and can be measured in three dimensions: quality, quantity, and elaboration. Support for this assumption is provided by the psychometric properties of the scale developed to measure imagery processing in concert with the support toward nomological validity of the construct that was provided by applying the scale in an experiment. Second, antecedents to mental imagery were examined, namely, the imagery-eliciting strategies of pictures and instructions to imagine, and their effects on …

A Conjoint Analysis Of Wetland-Based Recreation: A Case Study Of Louisiana Waterfowl Hunting., Christopher Ec Gan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Conjoint analysis is a recent evolution in mathematical psychology that has been employed extensively in the marketing environment. The technique is concerned with measuring the joint effect of two or more independent variables on the ordering of a dependent variable. Conjoint analysis relates an individual's preferences to a set of prespecified attributes. The objective of conjoint analysis is to decomposed a set of responses to factorially designed stimuli in which the utility of each stimuli attribute can be inferred from the respondents' evaluations of the stimuli. In addition, conjoint analysis and its economic foundations are developed in the context of …

Making The Secular Sacred: An Analysis Of Linguistic Devices Used To Give Religious Perspective To Ordinary Events., Wayne Porter Gregory Jan 1992

Making The Secular Sacred: An Analysis Of Linguistic Devices Used To Give Religious Perspective To Ordinary Events., Wayne Porter Gregory

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It has been suggested that human beings do not possess social reality so much as they actively and cooperatively construct it by means of language in interaction with others. The manipulation of symbols, the creation of inferences, the posturing of one's personal identity all work together to enable participants (both speakers and hearers) in a given speech event to create social reality and reaffirm and maintain their social relationships. In religious speech communities, like the one investigated in this study, participants seek to create a different kind of social reality--one that encompasses all of the individual and corporate experiences of …

Voices Of The Self In Daniel Defoe's Fiction: An Alternative Marxist Approach., Zaixin Zhang Jan 1991

Voices Of The Self In Daniel Defoe's Fiction: An Alternative Marxist Approach., Zaixin Zhang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The alternative Marxist approach to literary criticism in the present study consists of three "vocal" modes of interpretation: the public voice, the private voice, and the homeless voice of the self. The public voice represents authorial visions of the ideological real projected by dominant ideology that covers up the "objective" real, while the private voice corresponds to the authorial conscious or unconscious insertion into radical ideology that turns the "objective" real into the ideological real. However, the homeless voice of the self obliterates any ties with history and authorial ideology. A personification of the Marxist "particular interest" of the self, …

"Spades Players" And "Senators": An Ethnography Of Black Subcultures In A Community College., Anthony Louis Molina Sr Jan 1991

"Spades Players" And "Senators": An Ethnography Of Black Subcultures In A Community College., Anthony Louis Molina Sr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This ethnographic study of Black community college students, in a predominantly white community college, took place over a three-year period and focused on two groups. One group, the spades players, neglected their studies in favor of the card game spades, which they made the central activity of their family-like collective in the student commons. The other group, Black senators in the Student Government Association, were academic achievers who performed service to the college. By immersion into both cultures, the researcher gained the confidence of individual students in both groups, interviewed them in various settings, and looked for reasons behind the …

Curriculum Reform From Multicultural Perspectives: The Analysis Of An Urban School District's Systemic Process. (Volumes I And Ii)., Linda Johnson Stelly

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Crises in the economic and social conditions of the underrepresented have led to the analysis of education and the schooling process for responses to and explanations for these inequalities. The purpose of this ethnographically informed, autobiographic case study is to examine the relational and contradictory dynamics of an urban southern school district's systemic process of educational reform from multicultural perspectives. The case study examines the rules, roles and relationships of key change agents and stakeholders as they define education from multicultural perspectives in the process of change. The research further examines the developmental processes necessary to transform the existing curriculum …

Problem Behaviors Associated With Sociometric Status In An Adolescent Population., Glenda C. Thorne Jan 1991

Problem Behaviors Associated With Sociometric Status In An Adolescent Population., Glenda C. Thorne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the usefulness of the classification system developed by Coie and his colleagues (1982) with an adolescent population by examining the relationship between sociometric status and psychopathology. Five hundred thirty-one seventh- through ninth-grade students participated in the study. Following the Coie et al. (1982) procedure, children were identified as either popular, rejected, neglected, controversial, or average. The basis for status group membership was scores adolescents received on positive and negative peer nominations. Four social status variables were derived from these measures: (a) liked most peer nomination scores, (b) liked least peer nomination …

The Use Of Supertitles By American Opera Companies., Christina Margaret Alves Jan 1991

The Use Of Supertitles By American Opera Companies., Christina Margaret Alves

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main purpose of this monograph was to examine the use of supertitles in foreign language opera by American opera companies. Supertitles are the translation of an opera's text projected simultaneously above the stage during an opera performance. The use of supertitles is one of the most controversial issues in the opera world. Although the primary purpose is to enable the audience to understand a foreign text, there is an ongoing controversy over whether supertitles enhance an opera performance or detract from it. Many opera companies are using supertitles, but there are still those who have not made the investment …

The Variable Learning Effects Of Two Types Of Intervention On L2 Communication Skills Using Interactive Tasks., Margaret Ann Powers Jan 1991

The Variable Learning Effects Of Two Types Of Intervention On L2 Communication Skills Using Interactive Tasks., Margaret Ann Powers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study evaluated the benefits of a task-based procedure used to develop L2 communicative effectiveness in spoken English among a group of advanced proficiency learners. Using two interactive information-exchange map tasks, one diagram task, and two intervening discussion sessions, the study attempted to investigate the actual communicative outcomes of interaction prompted by the tasks and by the interventions. Subjects in three conditions first performed a map task designed with four referential problems which had to be solved to successfully complete the task. Immediately following the map task, the subjects in the first condition participated in a discussion session in which …

A Brooding Eloquence: Amplification And Irony In Marlowe's Dramas., Jeffery Galle Jan 1991

A Brooding Eloquence: Amplification And Irony In Marlowe's Dramas., Jeffery Galle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

My subject is the relationship between rhetoric and the range of possible reaction to Marlowe's protagonists in his five major plays--Tamburlaine I and II, Doctor Faustus, The Jew of Malta, and Edward II. In a very broad sense, I conceive of the rhetoric of each play in terms of opposing rhetorical forces, amplification and irony, and attempt to account for the relative intensity of amplification and irony in each play as I study the rhetoric of the protagonist. One strategy, amplification, entails the investment of a major character with logical arguments from invention, effective arrangement of ideas from disposition, and …

Individual And Work-Related Variables Contributing To Hospital Nurses' Participation Or Non-Participation In Available Clinical Career Ladder Programs., Sarah Kay Alford Thornhill

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One solution to overcome the shortage of hospital nurses is to establish and implement clinical career ladder programs. The purpose of this study was to examine hospital clinical nurses' perceptions of ladder programs as a job enrichment strategy and to determine individual and work-related variables contributing most to nurses' participation or nonparticipation in available clinical ladder programs. A random sample of 600 clinical nurses employed full time in five regional medical center hospitals located in Louisiana and Mississippi were the study subjects. Respondents were 106 (88.3%) of the 120 ladder program participants and 385 (80.2%) of the 480 nonparticipant nurses. …

An Examination Of Semiotic Theories Of Accounting Accruals., Harlan Lynn Etheridge Jan 1991

An Examination Of Semiotic Theories Of Accounting Accruals., Harlan Lynn Etheridge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two theories of accounting accruals form the core of this study. The theory of the functions of accounting accruals is induced from observation of accounting accruals. One type of accounting accrual reflects incomplete transactions under a system of cash receipts and cash disbursements. The function of these accruals is to convey data about economic events associated with incomplete cash transactions. These accruals are referred to as syntactically redundant accruals. The second type of accounting accrual presents messages in a different format than their counterparts in a system of cash receipts and cash disbursements. The function of these accruals is to …

The Making Of Meaning: Three Children's Responses To Three Researcher-Composed Narratives., Mary S. Everett Jan 1991

The Making Of Meaning: Three Children's Responses To Three Researcher-Composed Narratives., Mary S. Everett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three children's responses to three research-composed narratives were investigated. Participants were eight-year-old girls from the lower S.E.S., African-American culture. Study focuses on the composing processes used to write three children's stories and the responses of children to the stories. The author's intended meaning was compared with the children's construction of meaning. After each story was read aloud, response was elicited by each participant retelling the story and answering open-ended interview questions. One week later the participant was asked to retell the story a second time to determine changes in concept of story. Data were analyzed according to grounded theory methodology. …

An Analysis Of Syntactic Skills Used In Translating Natural Language Sentences Into Algebraic Equations., Elizabeth Devalcourt Gray Jan 1991

An Analysis Of Syntactic Skills Used In Translating Natural Language Sentences Into Algebraic Equations., Elizabeth Devalcourt Gray

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine how a competent person translates a natural language sentence into an algebraic equation. A current theory of how translation occurs is espoused by a group of cognitive scientists who propose that the competent translator uses only conceptual strategies in the translation process. I propose and investigate an alternate theory that the translation skills of a competent student are based on a syntactic analysis and syntactic manipulation of the sentence. In most cases such direct, syntactic translation processes will suffice, but for a small minority of sentence types a decision must be made …

An Analysis Of Educational Films: An African-American Perspective. (Volumes I And Ii)., Brenda Garibaldi Hatfield Jan 1991

An Analysis Of Educational Films: An African-American Perspective. (Volumes I And Ii)., Brenda Garibaldi Hatfield

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Historically African-Americans have been marginalized and subordinated in critical discourse and research in curriculum studies and educational media. There is a vital need for research directed toward African-Americans as subjects and viewers of media used in school curricula. Cultural theorists in curriculum and educational media studies are interested in knowing how social, political and ideological messages are produced and circulated in society, and how student audiences use them to make sense of their experiences. The purpose of this research is to contribute to a better understanding of how racial representations and social identities are coded and produced in educational films, …

Discriminating Borderline Personality Disorder (Bpd) From Major Depression And Refining Diagnostic Criteria For Bpd., Betty Susan Head Jan 1991

Discriminating Borderline Personality Disorder (Bpd) From Major Depression And Refining Diagnostic Criteria For Bpd., Betty Susan Head

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Investigators have sought to clarify the Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) category by comparing it with other personality disorders (e.g., Clarkin, Widiger, Frances, Hurt, & Gilmore, 1983; Zanarini, Gunderson, Grankenburg, & Chauncey, 1990), schizophrenia (see review by Siever & Gunderson, 1978), and major depression (see review by Gunderson & Phillips, 1991). The current study investigated the discriminative validity of the DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association, 1987) borderline criteria and qualitative differences in depression between borderlines (BPD) and patients diagnosed with major depressive episode (MDE). The 100 subjects were inpatients (n = 94) and outpatients (n = 6), assigned to one of three …

Family Support For Persisters And Non-Persisters In Louisiana's Adult Basic Education Programs., Geraldine Hargrove Holmes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The role that family involvement and the effects of home efforts have on improved student achievement for children is well documented in the literature. The purpose of this study was to determine whether family support should be considered when planning adult basic education (ABE) programs. The objectives addressed were: demographic characteristics, level of family support, and relationship of family support among selected variables. A statewide random sample of 197 adult basic education students was surveyed (82.7% response rate). Persisters (students who either completed the ABE program or were continuing their instruction when the study was conducted) and non-persisters (students who …
