Autobiographical Amnesia: Memory, Myth, Curriculum., Gregory Michael Nixon Jan 1992

Autobiographical Amnesia: Memory, Myth, Curriculum., Gregory Michael Nixon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Autobiography in curriculum theory and practice is being more and more acknowledged as a major force leading toward the development of reflectively analytical teachers, reflexive practitioners, and discursively self-aware individuals. I look to two vital aspects of self-narration to explore. I speak firstly of memory, without which narrative continuity would be impossible. Memory is as involved with learning as it is with storytelling, and I would agree with Krell (1978) that "inquiry into memory and the theory of pedagogy go hand in hand" (p. 131). I eschew the models of memory provided by the behavioral sciences, empirical psychology, cognitive psychology, …

Creating Informal Play Opportunities: Are Parents' And Preschoolers' Initiations Related To Children's Competence With Peers?, Gary W. Ladd, Craig H. Hart Jan 1992

Creating Informal Play Opportunities: Are Parents' And Preschoolers' Initiations Related To Children's Competence With Peers?, Gary W. Ladd, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

Preschoolers' social competence may depend on the frequency with which informal play activities are initiated by parents', children, and playmates. In this study, measures of children's peer relations in informal and school contexts and the frequency of parents', children's, and peers' play initiations were obtained with 83 preschool children and their families on 2 occasions. Frequent parent initiations were associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior, lower levels of nonsocial behavior and, among boys, greater peer acceptance in preschools. Children who were more initiating of informal peer contacts displayed less anxious behavior in school and were better liked by their …

Stress Begins In Kindergarten: A Look At Behavior During Standardized Testing, Pamela O. Fleege, Rosalind Charlesworth, Diane C. Burts, Craig H. Hart Jan 1992

Stress Begins In Kindergarten: A Look At Behavior During Standardized Testing, Pamela O. Fleege, Rosalind Charlesworth, Diane C. Burts, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

Kindergarten children’s behavior before, during, and after standardized achievement testing was explored through a qualitative study in two classrooms (n = 36). Simultaneously quantitative data were collected in one of the classrooms (n = 21) before and during the testing. Data were collected through observations in the classrooms, interviews with children and teachers, and audio and video taping of the children. For the quantitative component of the study, frequencies of stress behaviors were observed using a scan sampling method. Qualitative findings indicated an increase in behaviors reported to be stress related during the testing and a decrease in those behaviors …

Further Psychometric Properties Of The Mother's Activity Checklist., Linda Merideth Little Jan 1992

Further Psychometric Properties Of The Mother's Activity Checklist., Linda Merideth Little

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study attempted to extend the results obtained by Kelley and Carper (1988) regarding the psychometric properties of the Mother's Activity Checklist utilizing a larger, more heterogeneous sample of mothers. The MAC is a 100-item checklist of pleasant and unpleasant setting events which mothers frequently experience. A revised version of the MAC consisting of 45 items was developed utilizing factor analysis procedures. The revised version consists of four factors: Pleasant Events, Unpleasant Events, Aversive Child Behavior, and Aversive Marital Events. Utilizing a sample of eight hundred and thirty-three mothers with children between the ages of 2 and 12, both …

The Use Of Goal Setting And Contingency Contracting For Improving Children's Homework Performance., Deborah Lynn Miller Jan 1992

The Use Of Goal Setting And Contingency Contracting For Improving Children's Homework Performance., Deborah Lynn Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Research suggests that homework has favorable effects on learning and student achievement. However, research directed at improving homework completion and accuracy has been limited in scope. The present study examined the effects of goal setting and contingency contracting on children's homework performance. Subjects were four parent-child dyads in which the child exhibited clinically significant homework problems. Dependent variables of primary interest included direct observation of children's on-task behavior, work accuracy, and Homework Problem Checklist scores (Anesko, Schoiock, Ramirez, & Levine, 1987). Using a combination of multiple baseline and withdrawal (ABAB) designs, goal setting and contingency contracting produced significant improvements in …

The Effects Of Exercise Stress On Equine Immune Function., Tammie Lee Keadle Jan 1992

The Effects Of Exercise Stress On Equine Immune Function., Tammie Lee Keadle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The physiologic demands of exercise constitute a form of stress which is accompanied by modulation of immune responses. However, numerous studies in many different model systems have failed to clearly define the effects of exercise on immunity. Furthermore, the role of the neuroendocrine system in exercise-induced immunomodulation has been largely unexplored. To address these issues, we evaluated the effect of acute exercise stress on 3 indices of immune function in horses, before and after completion of a 12 week treadmill-based physical conditioning program. In addition, we determined the effects of corticosteroids, catecholamines, beta endorphin, and adrenocorticotropic hormone on these same …

"Mademoiselle De Maupin": A Close Reading And Study Of The Process Of Subjectivity In Theophile Gautier's Early Nineteenth Century Novel., Rebecca Lucille Tebeau Jan 1992

"Mademoiselle De Maupin": A Close Reading And Study Of The Process Of Subjectivity In Theophile Gautier's Early Nineteenth Century Novel., Rebecca Lucille Tebeau

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation proposes a close reading of Theophile Gautiers's Mademoiselle de Maupin. The purpose of this reading is to explore subjectivity by first assuming that it is a process, enacted by the protagonist's explorations of their own identities, but not an object contained in their elaborations. This view of subjectivity implies both the representational strategies of the protagonists, as well as the narrative strategies of the text. Since Mademoiselle de Maupin's narrative structure is so inconsistent and self-conscious, the explorations of self within the text draw attention to both the fiction of identity and the "identity" of fiction as a …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Severity Of Specific Adhd Symptoms And Parent And Child Locus-Of-Control Orientation In The Expression Of Parental Stress., Esther Marie Winters Jan 1992

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Severity Of Specific Adhd Symptoms And Parent And Child Locus-Of-Control Orientation In The Expression Of Parental Stress., Esther Marie Winters

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the effects of the child's specific ADHD symptoms, aggressive symptoms, and the parents' and child's locus of control orientation on parental stress. The frequently overlooked heterogeneous nature of the ADHD population was addressed, by assessing specific ADHD symptoms and the presence of aggressive symptomatology. Sixty boys, ages 6 to 12 years, diagnosed (using DSM-III-R criteria) as having ADHD by a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, and their parents participated in the study. Parents were asked to sign a consent form and complete measures of parental locus of control and parenting stress. A children's locus of control …

Decolonizing The Text: Glissantian Readings In Caribbean And African-American Literatures., Debra Lynn Anderson Jan 1992

Decolonizing The Text: Glissantian Readings In Caribbean And African-American Literatures., Debra Lynn Anderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation proposes to derive a critical reading from the writings of the Martinican poet, novelist, and theorist, Edouard Glissant. This reading would most directly involve, but not limit itself to, literatures written by black writers from the Caribbean and the United States. As critics such as Christopher Miller and Anthony Appiah suggest, these literatures have become the ground upon which colonization is symbolically re-enacted. Criticism colonizes these literatures by its textual appropriation, its imposition of Western critical models, and by bringing its own assumptions to the text. The critically acclaimed prefaces of Jean-Paul Sartre ("Orphee noire") and Andre Breton …

Dialogue Journal Writing In A Foreign Language Classroom: Assessing Communicative Competence And Proficiency., Lynn Patricia Baudrand-Aertker Jan 1992

Dialogue Journal Writing In A Foreign Language Classroom: Assessing Communicative Competence And Proficiency., Lynn Patricia Baudrand-Aertker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research studied dialogue journal writing, as it occurred between a teacher and twenty-one students in a French III high school. Results on attitude questionnaire indicated that dialogue journals helped students overcome their fear of the written form and increase their self-confidence and willingness to write. By demystifying the writing process, writing in their dialogue journals helped these students develop positive attitudes. The results on writing proficiency pre and post-tests indicated that students performed as well or better than students after four years of a foreign language in a high school setting or four semesters of college instruction. The dialogue …

The Methodological Issues Of Variance In Teacher Behavior And Student Achievement: The Relationship Of Variance To School And Teacher Effectiveness., Linda Jane Crone Jan 1992

The Methodological Issues Of Variance In Teacher Behavior And Student Achievement: The Relationship Of Variance To School And Teacher Effectiveness., Linda Jane Crone

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three different issues were involved in this study. Issue I examined the means and variances of teacher behavior for teachers in effective school versus teachers in ineffective schools. Five teachers were evaluated from grade three and grade five of five effective and six ineffective schools (25 teachers from effective schools and 30 teachers from ineffective schools). Observations of seven dimensions of teaching behavior were conducted. In every case, the group means of teacher behavior were higher for the teachers in the effective school category. An examination of the coefficients of variation indicated that the dispersion of scores for the teachers …

An Exploration Of Principal Change Facilitator Style, Teacher Bureaucratic And Professional Orientations, And Teacher Receptivity To Change. (Volumes I And Ii)., Sheila Weaks Chauvin Jan 1992

An Exploration Of Principal Change Facilitator Style, Teacher Bureaucratic And Professional Orientations, And Teacher Receptivity To Change. (Volumes I And Ii)., Sheila Weaks Chauvin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to utilize conceptions of principal change facilitator style, bureaucratic and professional orientations and teacher receptivity to change to extend our understanding of schools as organizations and to develop a comprehensive theoretical conception of planned organizational change in schools. A secondary purpose of this study was to report the results of a series of data analyses used to refine operational definitions of the study variables. This study is the first known in the literature to examine relationships among these variables in concert with a common set of schools, principals and teachers. The sample for …

Effects Of Stress, Dietary Restraint, And Disinhibition Upon Eating Habits And Nutrition., Barbara Ann Cubic Jan 1992

Effects Of Stress, Dietary Restraint, And Disinhibition Upon Eating Habits And Nutrition., Barbara Ann Cubic

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Restraint theory states that for some individuals physiological factors which normally result in eating compete with cognitive efforts to resist eating (i.e. dietary restraint). This disparity has been hypothesized to result in a chronic state of stress which leads to reduced behavioral control and increased negative affect. It has been presumed that dietary restraint is a precondition for overeating. Despite the legitimacy of proposing a link between stress, dietary restraint and overeating this interaction has not received intensive study. Furthermore, studies which have attempted to assess this relationship have not investigated the possible independent and interactive influences each of these …

Re-Thinking Readings And Writing In The Study Of Literature., Mary Ann Doyle Jan 1992

Re-Thinking Readings And Writing In The Study Of Literature., Mary Ann Doyle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

While the field of academic literary studies continues to engage in contested debate over defining and revising its curricula (Graff, 1987), teachers remain situated at the sometimes contradictory and often isolated intersections of theory and practice. Decisions made about writing in literature classes, selecting texts for course syllabi, and pedagogical style are most often negotiated at the level of the individual teacher, who may or may not be responding to an increasing incidence of departmental restructuring, recommendations, prohibitions, or political pressures. Though there is no scarcity of disagreements and accusations about what revisionary approaches 'mean', (Fieldnotes, Spring 1992), there is …

Modernity And War In The Poetry Of T. S. Eliot., Patricia Anne Gabilondo Jan 1992

Modernity And War In The Poetry Of T. S. Eliot., Patricia Anne Gabilondo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although most readers of T. S. Eliot have agreed that the European experience of world war and the resultant political and cultural dislocations provided an important context and source of imagery for much of his work, what has not been recognized is Eliot's use of figures of war to represent the intimate yet antagonistic relations between the poet's writing of modernity and the text that is history. Beginning with a tropological analysis of Eliot's "A Note on War Poetry," relative to both the genre of war poetry and aesthetic modernity, this study examines the figural interpenetration of war and literary …

Investigating The Informational Nature Of A Modeled Visual Demonstration., Britta Gertrud Schoenfelder-Zohdi Jan 1992

Investigating The Informational Nature Of A Modeled Visual Demonstration., Britta Gertrud Schoenfelder-Zohdi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the informational nature of a modeled visual demonstration of slalom-ski type movements performed on a ski simulator. Hypotheses exist suggesting that a model may convey information primarily about movement coordination (Newell, 1985), or movement form (Whiting, 1988), but there is no empirical evidence that this information is used by the learner so that skill acquisition is facilitated. To investigate this information question, three experiments were conducted that replicated and extended a study by Whiting, Bijlard, and den Brinker (1987) by analyzing movement kinematics of subjects in addition to movement outcome. In the first experiment, the expert model's …

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith Jan 1992

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The last two decades have seen a significant increase in the number and size of multinational corporations and a growing global investment environment. Linked to that growth has been a call for standards that produce accounting information that is capable of crossing national boundaries. One of the groups of professional elites that have addressed the call for harmonized international accounting standards is the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). The IASC objective (IASC 1988, 1) states that it will "work generally for the improvement and harmonization of regulations, accounting standards and procedures ... " To address such a goal, the IASC …

Using Independence Training To Teach Independent Living Skills To Visually Impaired Children And Youth., Marie E. Taras Jan 1992

Using Independence Training To Teach Independent Living Skills To Visually Impaired Children And Youth., Marie E. Taras

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two groups of students with visual impairments were taught various independent living skills. Five of the seven students also had a diagnosis of mental retardation. One group (three first graders) was taught the tasks of folding a shirt, making an emergency telephone call, and spreading soft foods with a knife. The other group (four young men) was taught to increase leisure skills through three different leatherwork tasks. Independence training was conducted in a group format, and included social learning components (e.g., self-evaluation, peer evaluation and reinforcement) in addition to traditional operant procedures (e.g., modeling, prompting). However, due to the presence …

A Comparison Of Language And Graphic Products Of Students From Kindergarten Classrooms Differing In Developmental Appropriateness Of Instruction., Jean Germany Mosley Jan 1992

A Comparison Of Language And Graphic Products Of Students From Kindergarten Classrooms Differing In Developmental Appropriateness Of Instruction., Jean Germany Mosley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the ways in which kindergartners from more and less developmentally appropriate classrooms negotiate the process of graphic communication. Both quantitative and qualitative aspects of this process are examined. Eighty-one kindergarten children from four classrooms were asked to tell a story both verbally and graphically. They were encouraged to include drawing, writing, or both on their paper. Then they were asked to tell the story that they had produced graphically. The children were students in one of four classrooms from a single school system that were identified as: (a) most developmentally appropriate beliefs and practices; (b) developmentally appropriate …

Leader-Member Exchange Quality: The Relationship Of Similarity, Competence, And Selected Personality Variables., Antoinette S. Phillips Jan 1992

Leader-Member Exchange Quality: The Relationship Of Similarity, Competence, And Selected Personality Variables., Antoinette S. Phillips

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) model (e.g., Cashman, Dansereau, Graen, & Haga, 1976; Dansereau, Cashman, & Graen, 1973) contends that leaders react differently with individual followers, rather than treating them homogeneously. Specifically, it assumes that leader behavior depends on relationships with individual work unit members. It further contends that followers vary in their perceptions of and reactions to leader behaviors. Followers, based on their interpersonal relationships (exchanges) with a leader, tend to form two qualitatively different groups, an in-group (higher quality) and an out-group (lower quality). Previous research has documented that insiders and outsiders may experience very different work outcomes. Factors …

Quality Enhancement Through Goal-Setting: Examining The Effects Of Goal Attributes And Feedback On Performance., Paula Lynne Phillips Jan 1992

Quality Enhancement Through Goal-Setting: Examining The Effects Of Goal Attributes And Feedback On Performance., Paula Lynne Phillips

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A laboratory experiment, using 165 students, was conducted to assess the effects of goal type (quantity vs quality), goal difficulty (difficult vs easy), goal specificity (specific vs nonspecific), and feedback type (goal-discrepant vs strategic) on performance. Subjects were asked to perform a heuristic task, appropriate for the assessment of both quantity and quality performance. Results indicated: (a) the provision of quality feedback will increase effort and will improve quality performance; (b) individuals value quality feedback more than they value quantity feedback; (c) individuals are more accurate in their prediction of quantity performance than they are in their prediction of quality …

Effects Of Job Applicant Past Performance And Interpersonal Attraction On Evaluator Attributions And Selection Decisions., Carl R. Phillips Jan 1992

Effects Of Job Applicant Past Performance And Interpersonal Attraction On Evaluator Attributions And Selection Decisions., Carl R. Phillips

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to examine the main and interactive effects of applicant past performance and interpersonal attraction on evaluator attributions and selection decisions; and the effects of evaluator attributions on selection decisions. One hundred seventy-two male and female students enrolled in undergraduate principles of management classes participated in the study. Subjects evaluated an application for an on-campus position and were asked to make selection decisions (i.e., rating applicant's chances of being selected for an interview and eventually receiving a job offer). The results indicated a main effect of applicant past performance (educational and work-related) on selection …

A Multi-Criterion Transactional Model., Bradley Shawn O'Hara Jan 1992

A Multi-Criterion Transactional Model., Bradley Shawn O'Hara

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This objectives of this dissertation were: (1) to conceptualize and test the influence of transactional elements, personal elements, and contextual elements on the transactional outcomes of trust, satisfaction and commitment; (2) to examine the role of external variables on transactional outcomes; and (3) to assess the interaction among transactional outcomes. Two hundred and eighteen propane gas retailers completed a mail questionnaire concerning an interaction (either discrete or on-going) with one of their suppliers. Perceptions around norms of the contract with this supplier (i.e., solidarity, role integrity), personal characteristics and traits of the salesperson (i.e., similarity, expertise, ethical orientation, customer orientation), …

Perceptual Evaluation Of Infant Articulatory Transitions., Nancye Chaney Roussel Jan 1992

Perceptual Evaluation Of Infant Articulatory Transitions., Nancye Chaney Roussel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The transition portion of the speech signal has been identified as critical to the perception of both consonants and vowels. Furui (1986) demonstrated that for adult Japanese speakers a 10 ms segment of the transition centered on the area of maximum spectral movement contained the most critical information for joint consonant and vowel perception. The distribution of phonemic cues contained within consonant-vowel (CV) non-reduplicated (NRB) syllables of infants ages 6 months to 15 months was compared to the distribution observed in adult productions to examine the extent of coproductive overlap of infant consonant and vowel gestures. Truncated versions of infant …

Predicting Success Of Minority Nursing Students On The "New" Nclex-Rn., Janet Simmons Rami Jan 1992

Predicting Success Of Minority Nursing Students On The "New" Nclex-Rn., Janet Simmons Rami

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to identify academic variables that could be used to forecast success for minority, baccalaureate (BSN) students enrolled in higher education in the south. A second purpose was to develop a methodological framework for predicting success on the post-1988 versions of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), that enhanced external validity, and generalizability. The best predictors of success for minority BSN nursing students were the Mosby assesstest, school comprehensive exit exams, GPA microbiology, the college cumulative GPA, nursing course cumulative GPA, and ACT composite. The sample included 216 Black graduates of three …

The Role Of Orbitofrontal And Temporal Lobe Cortices In Olfactory Memory Function., Robert Mansfield Savage Jan 1992

The Role Of Orbitofrontal And Temporal Lobe Cortices In Olfactory Memory Function., Robert Mansfield Savage

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Temporal lobe cortex was found to be essential to the initial processing of odor information within the cortex. This brain area can recognize previously smelled odors independent of damaged orbitofrontal cortex. In contrast, orbitofrontal cortex was found to be essential to identifying odors and attaching a verbal or nonverbal label to odor stimuli. These findings were observed in three brain-damaged groups, those with left hemisphere stroke (CVA), right hemisphere CVA, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The differential pattern of performance observed for CVA and TBI subjects on odor identification and odor recognition tasks suggests that temporal lobe and orbitofrontal olfactory …

Predicting Kindergarten Success: Use Of The Lens Model Methodology To Determine Factors Which Predict Success In The Kindergarten Classroom., Karen Lynne Serrett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent developments, including and especially the passage of legislation such as P.L. 99-457, have led to a call for more sophisticated technology to accurately assess at-risk preschool children. In addition, there is an urgent need for well trained professionals to perform these assignments. The purpose of the present study was to utilize the Lens Model methodology to examine variables professionals believe are important predictors of successful kindergarten functioning. In addition, the study also explored which variables would actually predict successful kindergarten functioning. Four major findings emerged from the study. First, results indicated that, for the professionals, Social Skills and Cognitive …
