The Preaching Of George Whitefield During The Great Awakening In America, Eugene Edmond White

For thirty-four George Whitefield followed the Biblical dictum: “Go ye into the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” Traveling by horseback, by schooner, and even by rowboat, he sought converts in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Holland, Bermuda, and colonial America. The out-of-doors was often his chapel; and a mound, tree stump, horse’s back, or hogshead, served as his pulpit. In his itinerating, Whitefield averaged about forty hours of preaching each week and eventually delivered about 18,000 sermons to some ten million auditors. Commitments To The Louisiana State Pententiary During The Fiscal Years 1939-1940 And 1945-1946, George Bedsole Jr

This study analyzes the commitments to the Louisiana State Penitentiary during the fiscal years 1939-1940 and 1945-1946. It directs particular attention at the possible effects of the recent war upon, first, the pattern of crime in the state; second, the characteristics of the persons admitted to the state penitentiary. Under the former category are considered the types of crimes for which sentenced, the place of crime, and the extent of recidivism. In connection with the latter category, information on race, sex, age, marital status, religion, and occupation is analyzed. James Brown was born in Virginia in 1766, son of the reverend John Brown, a Presbyterian minister. He was educated in his father’s schools and at William and Mary College. Trained for the law, he mowed to Kentucky to be with his brother John. The latter, also a lawyer, was prominent, serving in the U. S. Senate, 1792-1806.

President Washington appointed James Brown attorney for Kentucky in 1790. CM admission of Kentucky to statehood, the Governor named Brown secretary of state for a four year term. Brown moved to New Orleans in 1804. Jefferson appointed him successively secretary of the …
