New Orleans And Nation-Wide Prohibition As Reflected In The Times-Picayune, 1918-20, Robert Hartsell Russell

This is an inquiry into the beginnings of national prohibition in the United States, as seen by the Times-Picayune. Particular emphasis was given New Orleans, the community in which the newspaper was published and one of the most hostile areas in the country.

The period covered extends from November, 1918, when war prohibition began, through June, 1920, the month when the Supreme Court upheld the 18th Amendment and its enforcement act.

Some 600 issues of the Times-Picayune were carefully studied, giving due attention to news coverage, editorials, reader opinion, and the loyalties of the publication. A number of books on …

What la Louisiana getting far Its multi-mllion dollar Investment and annual expenditure of thousands of dollars for correctional services? The purpose of this thesis is to analyze a community of predominantly light-skinned Catholic Negroes as members of the parochial organization of Corpus Christi Catholic Negro Parish. Utilizing both the socio-historical and institutional approaches to the study of community, the objectives of the study were: (1) to present a history of the parish since its establishment in 1916; (2) to define the social organization of the parish; (3) to present a general view of the involvements of the parish membership in the familial, educational, economic, political, and recreational institutions; (4) to indicate-the-attitudes of each interviewee concerning residence and race; and …

During the nineteenth century Louisiana fell prey to many infectious diseases. One of the most severe to strike the state was Asiatic Cholera. In 1817 the pestilence began to spread from India, infecting both Asia and Europe. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean, cholera Invaded Louisiana in October, 1832, and within the next twelve months killed over 6,000 persons In Orleans alone. During this time all normal economic activities were Interrupted, and the city came to a near standstill as many people fled In an attempt to escape cholera.
