The Irish In New Orleans, 1845-1855, Ruby Nell Gordy Jul 1960

The Irish In New Orleans, 1845-1855, Ruby Nell Gordy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Between the years of 1845 and 1855 over one and a quarter million of Ireland’s population fled to the United States in order to escape dire poverty and almost certain death in their native land. Only a small percentage of these immigrants settled in New Orleans, but this minority group played a significant role in this period of the city’s history. The purpose of this study was to determine how the Irish of New Orleans lived, what social and political problems their presence created, and in what ways they contributed to the growth and development of the city. Newspapers, census …

The Career Patterns Of Negro Lawyers In New Orleans, Barbara Marie Guillory Jun 1960

The Career Patterns Of Negro Lawyers In New Orleans, Barbara Marie Guillory

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This is the first systematic study of the career patterns of Negro lawyers in the South. Two main hypotheses have guided the collection and analysis of data. The first, proposed by Gunnar Myrdal, states that all Negro professionals are "imprisoned" in the Negro problem. The second hypothesis, proposed by William Peters, holds that leadership in the Negro community is shifting from ministers toward lawyers.

In order to test these hypotheses data from four main sources were collected:

  1. a thorough review of pertinent literature,
  2. personal interviews with all twenty Negro lawyers practicing in New Orleans,
  3. interviews with selected white lawyers, court …

Behavior Of The Red-Footed Booby (Sulasula) In British Honduras, Jared Verner May 1959

Behavior Of The Red-Footed Booby (Sulasula) In British Honduras, Jared Verner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During three months of the breeding season in a colony of 3500 Red-footed Boobies (Sula sula) on 45½-acre Half Moon Caye, fifty miles east of Belize, British Honduras, that species’ little-known breeding activities were investigated. Feeding flights of boobies began leaving the caye before daylight and returned in the evening until after dark. Wind direction and velocity notably affected the mode of the birds’ departure but little affected their direction. Average flight-unit size was 2.41 birds. Contrary to published accounts, the boobies were able to take flight from the ground.

Women In Prison: A Study Of Social Relationships, Charlotte Mae Richardson Jan 1959

Women In Prison: A Study Of Social Relationships, Charlotte Mae Richardson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During the preceding half century, sociologists have conducted an increasing number of studies of small informal groups; however, few social scientists have studied these phenomena among inmates in prison. Particularly is this true with regard to female inmates. This thesis seeks to present a sociological description of informal inmate groups, their leaders, and the isolates in a women's division of a state prison. It is hoped that the study will provide insight into possible hypotheses and methodological procedures for future research. The conclusions tend to support the findings of other social scientists who have written in this area. Non-participant observation, …
