Characterization And Tribological Behavior Of Diamond-Like Carbon And Nitrogen-Doped Diamond-Like Carbon Thin Films, Krishna Chaitanya Kadiyala Jan 2006

Characterization And Tribological Behavior Of Diamond-Like Carbon And Nitrogen-Doped Diamond-Like Carbon Thin Films, Krishna Chaitanya Kadiyala

LSU Master's Theses

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have been extensively studied for more than two decades due to their highly attractive properties. These films exhibit unique mechanical, electrical and tribological behavior and thus, possess great potential for applications in tribology. However, the high level of internal stress developed and low thermal stability are the main drawbacks. Synthesis of nitrogen-doped DLC (N-DLC) offers the possibility of overcoming these drawbacks. In the present study, DLC and N-DLC films (with low N content) were deposited on Si substrates using a hybrid plasma-assisted CVD/PVD process. Film characterization in terms of microstructure, composition and chemical state of components …

Evaluation Of An Amperometric Biosensor For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7, Danyelle Denise Small Jan 2006

Evaluation Of An Amperometric Biosensor For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7, Danyelle Denise Small

LSU Master's Theses

Escherichia coli O157:H7 contamination is a major hazard in the water supply, causing outbreaks of disease. Conventional methods of E. coli O157:H7 detection usually takes 1-2 days and require hands-on preparation. There is a need to develop a rapid, inexpensive means of detecting the organism. The amperometric biosensor technology has achieved success in the area of metabolite detection. In this study, a bench scale amperometric biosensor was investigated to rapidly detect Escherichia coli O157:H7. The amperometric biosensor consisted of a power source, Clark electrode, autoranging picoammeter, and fabricated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) outer insert with nitrocellulose membrane and attached horseradish peroxidase …

Antimicrobial Activity Of Cpc And Asc Against Foodborne Pathogens And The Physiological Effect On Fresh-Cut Cantaloupe Cubes At Refrigerator Temperatures, Allison Marie Dumas Jan 2006

Antimicrobial Activity Of Cpc And Asc Against Foodborne Pathogens And The Physiological Effect On Fresh-Cut Cantaloupe Cubes At Refrigerator Temperatures, Allison Marie Dumas

LSU Master's Theses

In the last few decades, fresh-cut fruit products have gained popularity with consumers. They require little to no further processing prior to consumption. Fresh-cut products also make fruits and vegetables more conveniently available to consumers year-round. There are limitations, however, to fresh-cut fruit and vegetables in the marketplace. These products are very perishable and could become contaminated with foodborne pathogens. Most fresh-cut fruits and vegetables will only last a short period of time at refrigerator temperatures. There are many possible routes of bacterial contamination in the fresh-cut produce industry. There is a need for antimicrobial compounds that can be applied …

How African-American And Hispanics Perceive Their Racial Equality In American Advertising, Denise Michele Pallais Jan 2006

How African-American And Hispanics Perceive Their Racial Equality In American Advertising, Denise Michele Pallais

LSU Master's Theses

This study focuses on how African-Americans and Hispanics perceive their racial equality in American advertising. A survey was conducted to find out the African-American and the Hispanic perceptions about how these ethnic groups saw themselves depicted, and the way they are stereotyped by the U.S. media. Overall, the study found that there was no difference between race and the level of perception between these two ethnic groups. However, age appears to be the only demographic variable that affects the African-American and Hispanic perception of discrimination. In addition, the study also exposed that African-Americans are mostly portrayed in the athletic advertising …

Application Of Polymeric Microfluidic Devices For Separation Of Single-Stranded Dna, Shawn Llopis Jan 2006

Application Of Polymeric Microfluidic Devices For Separation Of Single-Stranded Dna, Shawn Llopis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Microsystems targeted for DNA sequencing, especially those focused on electrophoretic separations, are rapidly proving their viability to genomic research, mimicking the progress made when capillary electrophoresis developed from miniaturizing slab gel electrophoresis techniques. Being the more recent electrophoretic separation platform, the commercial availability of microchip electrophoresis devices remains relatively limited. To this extent, high-aspect ratio microstructures formed in thermo plastics have been developed using rapid fabrication methods from molding tools designed for mass replication of high-aspect ratio microfeatures. In this work, the choice and compatibility of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) – the primary substrate for DNA separations in this work – was …

Factors That Influence Traditional-Age, High-Achieving Students To Enroll At A Research-Extensive University In The Southern Region Of The United States, Roy Cleveland Brooks, Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if a model existed that significantly increased the researcher's ability to accurately explain the enrollment status of high-achieving freshmen based on the influence of selected demographic and academic characteristics. Since World War II, the need for students to obtain an outstanding postsecondary education in order to compete for the best positions in today's job market has become increasingly important. Thus, the need exists for higher education institutions to offer competitive academic programs that will attract top students and faculty. Since the number of graduating high school students is predicted to decline …

Effects Of An External Field And Dissipation On Decoherence, Jian Zuo Jan 2006

Effects Of An External Field And Dissipation On Decoherence, Jian Zuo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Decoherence is the suppression of the interference of quantum states. It plays important roles in the study of the quantum-classical transition. It is also the major obstacle in the implementation of various schemes of quantum computers. Decoherence can be affected by many factors. The interactions between quantum systems of interest and dissipative environments cause the extensively studied environment-induced-decoherence. Decoherence can also occur as the result of a temperature effect. A recent experiment investigated the engineering of decoherence, which involves applying an external field to the quantum system. In this thesis, we study the effect of an external field on decoherence …

Investigating The Influence Of Anti-Racist Education In Achieving Prejudice Reduction Among Secondary Education Students, Joseph Edward Wilson Jan 2006

Investigating The Influence Of Anti-Racist Education In Achieving Prejudice Reduction Among Secondary Education Students, Joseph Edward Wilson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the influence of participation in an anti-racist educational (ARE) program upon the perceptions of, critical assessments of, and self-reported behaviors toward institutional racism in a sample of 11th-grade students enrolled in a public school district that had recently undergone compulsory, court-ordered desegregation. This quasi-experimental study measured hypothesized differences between the scores of a group of high school students on a quantitative data-gathering instrument before their participation in an Undoing Racism curriculum, with their scores on that same instrument re-administered three months after their completion of that course. It then compared the degree of pre-intervention/ post-intervention changes in …

The Intersection Of News Frames: Examining The Top Two Health Problems In The United States, Lesa D'Anne Hatley Jan 2006

The Intersection Of News Frames: Examining The Top Two Health Problems In The United States, Lesa D'Anne Hatley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research tests the public health model of reporting to discover if changing the way newspaper stories frame the top two health concerns in the United States – cancer and obesity – affects readers’ view of the problem. Using an experimental design, this study manipulated the context of newspaper stories about cancer and obesity. Applying thematic (broader context) and episodic (individual or event) framing concepts and gains (emphasizes benefits – e.g. lives saved) and losses (emphasizes costs – lives lost), this research revealed how the differences in framing affect public opinion about cancer and obesity. This research expands framing theory …

Companion Animals As Being-Objects: The Role Of The Self/Other Binary In The Human-Animal Bond, Amanda Kelly Reed Jan 2006

Companion Animals As Being-Objects: The Role Of The Self/Other Binary In The Human-Animal Bond, Amanda Kelly Reed

LSU Master's Theses

This research project is an investigation into the human-dog bond and the practice of pet adoption and pet surrender at the East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control Center. The human-dog bond is an excellent vehicle for an investigation into how we create categories of other because it is a highly complex and intersubjective relationship with deep evolutionary roots that is often reduced to a relationship between possessor and possessed in which cultural, historical, and biological contexts are not considered. It is a relationship in which constructed meaning is taken for fact. This thesis explores how animal control centers both resist …

The Crystal Structure Of A Dna-Binding Protein, Hucr, From Deinococcus Radiodurans R1: A Member Of The Marr Family Of Winged-Helix Transcriptional Regulators, Hansen Bordelon Jan 2006

The Crystal Structure Of A Dna-Binding Protein, Hucr, From Deinococcus Radiodurans R1: A Member Of The Marr Family Of Winged-Helix Transcriptional Regulators, Hansen Bordelon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The MarR family of transcriptional regulators is an important group of prokaryotic DNA binding proteins. As the family name implies, multiple antibiotic resistance, members of the MarR family often regulate the expression of resistance genes to multiple antibiotics, organic solvents, household disinfectants, detergents, and oxidative stress agents. Most MarR members act as transcriptional repressors and exist as homodimers in both free and DNA-bound states. DNA-binding is mediated via a winged-helix fold and is often relieved by anionic lipophilic ligands. Deinococcus radiodurans R1 was found to encode a 181 residue MarR homolog designated HucR (hypothetical uricase regulator). Biochemical evidence has shown …

Voluntary Childlessness In The United States: Recent Trends By Cohort And Period, Laurie Chancey Jan 2006

Voluntary Childlessness In The United States: Recent Trends By Cohort And Period, Laurie Chancey

LSU Master's Theses

Most large-scale studies on voluntary childlessness since the waning of the baby boom provide cross-sectional estimates for a single time period. They cannot be synthesized to estimate change because of the varied definitions used to operationalize voluntary childlessness. In this study, I use data from the 1973-2002 cycles of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) to estimate change in voluntary childlessness using a consistent definition by period and birth cohort. I find that voluntary childlessness stayed relatively constant through the seventies and eighties, but showed a large increase from the mid-nineties to 2002. I show that voluntary childlessness increased …

Escape To Utopia: Mental Illness, Veterans, And Gowanda State Hospital (1946-1952), Ursula Irene Anna Goldsmith Jan 2006

Escape To Utopia: Mental Illness, Veterans, And Gowanda State Hospital (1946-1952), Ursula Irene Anna Goldsmith

LSU Master's Theses

This study will cover the history from 1946 to 1952 of a state hospital located in Helmuth, New York, known as Gowanda State Homeopathic Hospital (GSH). It describes the community, physical campus and the surrounding area where it is located. The experience of treating military personnel suffering from combat-related mental illness during the 1940s led many psychiatrists to emphasize the social dimensions of mental disorder and to hypothesize that mentally ill civilians and veterans may best be treated outside of traditional mental institutions in their hometowns. This theory was implemented with the discovery of psychotropic drugs in the mid 1950s. …

Wheat (Triticum Aestivum) Response To Simulated Drift Of Glyphosate, Christopher Andrew Roider Jan 2006

Wheat (Triticum Aestivum) Response To Simulated Drift Of Glyphosate, Christopher Andrew Roider

LSU Master's Theses

Field research evaluated response of ‘USG 3209’ wheat to glyphosate drift representing 12.5, 6.3, and 1.6% of the usage rate of 1,120 g ai/ha (140, 70, and 18 g/ha, respectively). Applications in 140 L/ha spray volume were made at first node in late February/late March, boot stage in late March/early April, and early flowering in early to mid-April. Bleaching of leaf foliage was observed for all glyphosate rates regardless of application timing. Height 28 days after treatment (DAT) was reduced 47% with glyphosate applied at 140 g/ha at first node and around 26% for 70 g/ha applied at first node …

Retrotransposon Mediated Genomic Fluidity In The Human And Chimpanzee Lineages, Kyudong Han Jan 2006

Retrotransposon Mediated Genomic Fluidity In The Human And Chimpanzee Lineages, Kyudong Han

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

LINE-1s (Long interspersed elements or L1s) and Alus are highly successful non-long terminal repeat retrotransposons with copy numbers of ~520,000 and >1 million within the human genome, respectively. They are associated with human genetic variation and genomic rearrangement. Although they are abundant throughout primate genomes, their propagation strategy remains poorly understood. The recently released human and chimpanzee draft genome sequences provide the opportunity to compare the human genome with the chimpanzee genome. Thus, we were able to assess how these elements expanded in primate genomes and how they create genomic instability during their integration into the host genome as well …

Substrate Utilization In Skeletal Muscle And Adipose Tissue, Lauren M. Sparks Jan 2006

Substrate Utilization In Skeletal Muscle And Adipose Tissue, Lauren M. Sparks

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Obesity and Type 2 diabetes are associated with high fat diet (HFD), reduced mitochondrial mass and function and insulin resistance as characterized by glucose disposal and relative to body fatness. We hypothesized that (a) HFD affects expression of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and function, (b) carbohydrate metabolism and storage is under transcriptional control and (c) both overall fatness and characteristics of adipose tissue influence the interplay between free fatty acids (FFAs) and insulin-stimulated glucose disposal. To test hypotheses “a” and “b”, we fed 10 insulin-sensitive males an isoenergetic HFD for 3 days with muscle biopsies before and after intervention. …

Phenolic Compounds And Antioxidant Activity Of Oat Bran By Various Extraction Methods, Darryl Lourey Holliday Jan 2006

Phenolic Compounds And Antioxidant Activity Of Oat Bran By Various Extraction Methods, Darryl Lourey Holliday

LSU Master's Theses

Recent studies have suggested that the health promoting capabilities of oats are due to its antioxidants (tocopherols, tocotrienols, and sterols) found within the bran along with phenolic compounds, such as avenanthramides, p-hydroxybenoic acid and vanillic acid. Long-chain fatty acid oxidation is directly responsible for most off-flavors in food. Since oat bran is a good source of antioxidants, a concentrated extract could be used as a natural preservative, for foods rich in unsaturated long-chain fatty acids. Three methods, traditional solvent (TSE), microwave-assisted solvent (MAS), and supercritical fluid treatment (SFT), were used to obtain the extracts. One extraction temperature in TSE, 60°C, …

Modeling The Effects Of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals On Atlantic Croaker: Understanding Biomarkers And Predicting Population Responses, Cheryl Anne Murphy Jan 2006

Modeling The Effects Of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals On Atlantic Croaker: Understanding Biomarkers And Predicting Population Responses, Cheryl Anne Murphy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A number of environmental stressors have been shown to interfere with reproductive and behavioral processes of fish by interfering with endocrine function. Most biomarkers of endocrine disturbance tend to be static measurements from dynamic systems making them difficult to evaluate within the context of an individual, or subtle effects that do not relate well to endpoints of ecological significance. I present an approach that uses a series of models, based on Atlantic croaker, to extrapolate laboratory results to indicators of individual and population health. First, I created a physiologically based model that simulates vitellogenesis in a female fish. The model …

Delineating Hurricane Vulnerable Populations In Orleans Parish, Louisiana, Stephanie Pedro Jan 2006

Delineating Hurricane Vulnerable Populations In Orleans Parish, Louisiana, Stephanie Pedro

LSU Master's Theses

Since settlement first began, equality issues between different social classes have been evident in the location of where residents settled in New Orleans. This research seeks to answer the question: What socioeconomic indicators are prevalent in the areas most-at-risk to flooding which could inhabit populations least able to evacuate? I will use Census 2000 block group data from the socioeconomic sample data (SF3) collected in 2000, along with other economic and GIS data from the New Orleans region to statistically represent the distribution of risk by selecting indicators predicted to be in flood zones from a classification tree analysis. Then, …

Inhibition Of Hormone Dependent And Independent Breast Cancer Cells By Oyster(Crassostrea Virginica) Ceramide, Madhavi Chintalapati

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this research was to investigate the in vitro and in vivo anti-angiogenic properties of ceramide isolated from oyster (Crassostrea virginica). Ceramide was isolated from oyster by silicic acid chromatography, purified by alkaline hydrolysis, and analyzed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In vitro, the activity of ceramide on human hormone-dependent (MCF-7) and hormone-independent (MDA-MB-435s) breast cancer cells was evaluated for cell viability and proliferation, VEGF-induced cell migration and invasion, apoptosis, and autophagy. The activity of ceramide was also evaluated for VEGF-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) tube formation. The protein levels of vascular endothelial growth factor …

The Abc's Of Hiv: When "Just Say No" Is Not Enough-Queer Critique Of Aids Policy, Lisa Laura Ladwig Jan 2006

The Abc's Of Hiv: When "Just Say No" Is Not Enough-Queer Critique Of Aids Policy, Lisa Laura Ladwig

LSU Master's Theses

This paper will critique the United States' AIDS policy, both domestic and international. I demonstrate how queer theorists have used Jacques Lacan's concepts of "jouissance" and the "unconscious desire" to suggests ways in which the current policy has dangerous implications for real people, for public health, and human rights. I reveal how the problem of rising HIV infection is not due to the lack of availability of safer-sex information, but rather it is a problem of execution: the Religious Right's ideology inscribed in our public health policy. Finally, I wish to expose how people in this country and others are …

ABSTRACT Solvent extraction methods are widely used for extracting antioxidant in foods and other sources. In this study, Traditional Solvent Extraction (TSE) and Microwave-Assisted Solvent Extraction (MASE) were utilized to determine the content of antioxidants in corn germ, wheat bran and wheat germ. Corn germ, wheat bran and wheat germ all contain different levels of antioxidants; TSE and MASE were utilized to determine the content of antioxidants in these three samples. TSE was performed at 60 ¨¬C employing three solvents, acetone, hexane and methanol. MASE was performed using the solvent methanol at four different temperatures, 60, 80, 100 and 120 …

Brugia Phangi: Effects Of Third Stage Larvae Es Immunization On Early Migration And Parasite Establishment In Mongolian Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus), Ginger Ann Robertson Jan 2006

Brugia Phangi: Effects Of Third Stage Larvae Es Immunization On Early Migration And Parasite Establishment In Mongolian Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus), Ginger Ann Robertson

LSU Master's Theses

Brugia infections occur via the bite of an infected mosquito. Third stage infective larvae (L3) deposited on the skin during feeding migrate into the bite wound, through skin and into the lymphatic system. It is hypothesized that L3 excretory/secretory products (ES) are important in this initial phase of the infection. A model for these early migrations has been established by inoculating L3s into the dermis (ID) of the permissive gerbil host. In this model, most L3s injected ID in the louer hind limb travel to the popliteal lymph node by 3 days post infection. Adult parasites are located primarily in …

Uncovering Bacterial Diversity On And Below The Surface Of A Hyper-Arid Environment, The Atacama Desert, Chile, Danielle Rene Bagaley Jan 2006

Uncovering Bacterial Diversity On And Below The Surface Of A Hyper-Arid Environment, The Atacama Desert, Chile, Danielle Rene Bagaley

LSU Master's Theses

The Atacama Desert in Chile extends from latitudes 17º S to 28º S between longitudes 69º W and 71º W. It has been reported that surface soils in the hyper-arid region contain low numbers of culturable heterotrophic bacteria. These soils are considered Mars-like and offer an ideal setting to investigate the application of life detection systems. Thirty-three surface sites were sampled to examine further the extent of the hyper-arid region. We also excavated four soil pits, 40 cm to 90 cm in depth, to explore subsurface microbial communities. One pit was dug in a southern region of the desert compared …

Information Analysis Of Dna Sequences, Riyazuddin Mohammed Jan 2006

Information Analysis Of Dna Sequences, Riyazuddin Mohammed

LSU Master's Theses

The problem of differentiating the informational content of coding (exons) and non-coding (introns) regions of a DNA sequence is one of the central problems of genomics. The introns are estimated to be nearly 95% of the DNA and since they do not seem to participate in the process of transcription of amino-acids, they have been termed “junk DNA.” Although it is believed that the non-coding regions in genomes have no role in cell growth and evolution, demonstration that these regions carry useful information would tend to falsify this belief. In this thesis, we consider entropy as a measure of information …

Effects Of Silvicultural Techniques And Landscape Management On Habitat Quality And Relative Abundance For Northern Bobwhites In A Pine Plantation Forest, Jason Douglas Burke Jan 2006

Effects Of Silvicultural Techniques And Landscape Management On Habitat Quality And Relative Abundance For Northern Bobwhites In A Pine Plantation Forest, Jason Douglas Burke

LSU Master's Theses

Pine plantation forests are increasing in scope across the southeastern United States, particularly Louisiana. These areas provide poor quality bobwhite brood-rearing habitats, and become increasingly degraded without periodic disturbance. Poor quality habitat conditions at a landscape-level scale usually results in reduced fall bobwhite body weights, creating low survival rates. We researched 4 understory vegetation management techniques (ie. mowing, no treatment, burn only, and imazapyr with burning) within pine plantations to evaluate their effects on vegetation composition and structure and on arthropod abundance and availability relative to bobwhite brooding habitat in 2002-2005. We used 1,155 human-imprinted bobwhite chicks to estimate foraging …

Modeling And Fabrication Of A Microthermocouple Array, Adam Cygan Jan 2006

Modeling And Fabrication Of A Microthermocouple Array, Adam Cygan

LSU Master's Theses

Cryobiology is the study of how living cells and tissues respond to freezing and exposure to subzero temperatures. Studies in this field are aimed toward improving methods of cryosurgery as well as the storage of cells and tissues. For example, one area of research is to link the biophysical cellular dehydration and intracellular ice formation in cells during tissue freezing to cell viability and mechanical properties after thawing. There is currently a method for measuring dehydration in cells as part of a tissue, but not an adequate method for measuring intracellular ice formation in tissues. A prototype device that would …

Fluctuations And Noise: A General Model With Applications, R. F. O'Connell Dec 2005

Fluctuations And Noise: A General Model With Applications, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

A wide variety of dissipative and fluctuation problems involving a quantum system in a heat bath can be described by the independent-oscillator (10) model Hamiltonian. Using Heisenberg equations of motion, this leads to a generalized quantum Langevin equation (QLE) for the quantum system involving two quantities which encapsulate the properties of the heat bath. Applications include: atomic energy shifts in a blackbody radiation heat bath; solution of the problem of runaway solutions in QED; electrical circuits (resistively shunted Josephson barrier, microscopic tunnel junction, etc.); conductivity calculations (since the QLE gives a natural separation between dissipative and fluctuation forces); dissipative quantum …

The Identity Of Catfishes Identified As Mystus Cavasius (Hamilton, 1822) (Teleostei: Bagridae), With A Description Of A New Species From Myanmar, Prosanta Chakrabarty, Heok Hee Ng

Faculty Publications

The identity of South Asian riverine bagrid catfishes usually referred to as Mystus cavasius (Hamilton, 1822) is reviewed. Three species comprise what is currently understood as M. cavasius: M. cavasius s. str. from northern India, M. seengtee from southern India and a new species, M. falcarius, from the Salween and Irrawaddy river drainages in Myanmar and the shorter river drainages in southern Myanmar. Mystus seengtee is resurrected from synonymy with M. cavasius and both species are redescribed. The three species differ from other congeners with a long-based adipose fin in having a combination of a black spot in front of …

Conformational Studies Of The Tetramerization Site Of Human Erythroid Spectrin By Cysteine-Scanning Spin-Labeling Epr Methods, Shahila Mehboob, Bing Hao Luo, Wentao Fu, Michael E. Johnson, L. W.M. Fung Dec 2005

Conformational Studies Of The Tetramerization Site Of Human Erythroid Spectrin By Cysteine-Scanning Spin-Labeling Epr Methods, Shahila Mehboob, Bing Hao Luo, Wentao Fu, Michael E. Johnson, L. W.M. Fung

Faculty Publications

We used cysteine-scanning and spin-labeling methods to prepare singly spin labeled recombinant peptides for electron paramagnetic resonance studies of the partial domain regions at the tetramerization site (N-terminal end of α and C-terminal end of β) of erythroid spectrin. The values of the inverse line width parameter (ΔH0-1) from a family of SpoI-1-368Δ peptides scanning residues 21-30 exhibited a periodicity of ∼3.5-4. We used molecular dynamics calculations to show that the asymmetric mobility of this helix is not necessarily due to tertiary contacts, but is likely due to intrinsic properties of helix C′, a helix with a heptad pattern sequence. …
