Sample size for the integrated …
Tumor Necrosis Factor Induced Oxidative Stress In The Central Nervous System Contributes To Sympathoexcitation In Heart Failure, Anuradha Guggilam
Tumor Necrosis Factor Induced Oxidative Stress In The Central Nervous System Contributes To Sympathoexcitation In Heart Failure, Anuradha Guggilam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Despite advanced therapeutic strategies for post-myocardial infarction (MI) patients, many ultimately develop congestive heart failure (CHF), rendering the disease a major cause of death in the United States. MI is associated with an acute increase in sympathetic nervous system activity, becoming persistent in CHF patients. Increased pro-inflammatory cytokines (PICs) following MI are implicated in the pathogenesis of CHF. The increase in tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a primary PIC, correlates closely with heart disease severity. Moreover, central PIC production increases post-MI, and can affect the brain’s cardiovascular regulatory regions that control sympathoexcitation. Therefore, understanding how PICs modulate sympathoexcitation is important for …
The Anatomy Of Anatomia: Dissection And The Organization Of Knowledge In British Literature, 1500-1800, Matthew Scott Landers
The Anatomy Of Anatomia: Dissection And The Organization Of Knowledge In British Literature, 1500-1800, Matthew Scott Landers
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation develops a conceptual history of human anatomy, both as a discipline and as an epistemological model. Building on recent scholarship in the history of science, I argue that the basic organization of anatomical inquiry inspired a number of literary productions during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This project counters important critical trends of the last five decades, which have focused on the ambiguous characterization of an anatomical genre without providing sufficient medical context. I argue that intellectual history reveals a persistent epistemological analogy between the body and textual arrangements of human knowledge. By examining this analogical structure, it …
Strutting It Up Through Histories: A Performance Genealogy Of The Philadelphia Mummers Parade, Corey Elizabeth Leighton
Strutting It Up Through Histories: A Performance Genealogy Of The Philadelphia Mummers Parade, Corey Elizabeth Leighton
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the cultural performances of the parade community in one of the oldest and largest parades in the country: the Philadelphia Mummers Parade. The modern parade celebration consists of groups of mostly working-class white men from South Philadelphia who dress up in extravagant sequined and feathered costumes and, beginning in South Philadelphia, march toward City Hall on one of the largest streets in the city on New Year’s Day. The parade is competitive and marked by performance competitions at the end of each parade. The parade’s history in the city of Philadelphia is extensive but contested. Many locals …
A Non-Invasive Semiconductor Optical System To Measure Skin Tension, Anna Charron Dugas
A Non-Invasive Semiconductor Optical System To Measure Skin Tension, Anna Charron Dugas
LSU Master's Theses
The objectives of this project are to design, construct, validate and test a low-cost, non-invasive and painless device to measure skin tension. Skin is a complex, multi-layered, anisotropic material with non-linear viscoelastic behavior during stress application. The intricate balance of different semi-elastic fibers and continuous regeneration has brought difficulty to the accurate measurement of its mechanical properties. Commercial skin tension measurement products have been described, but are too expensive to be readily accessible for skin research and clinical utilization. The device to be developed in this project differs from existing devices in that it measures skin deformation under vacuum using …
Photocatalytic Reaction In Monolithic Optical Fiber Reactor With Inverse Opal Catalyst, Maoming Ren
Photocatalytic Reaction In Monolithic Optical Fiber Reactor With Inverse Opal Catalyst, Maoming Ren
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The development of photocatalytic reactor is essential for the successful application of heterogeneous semiconductor in environmental study, which has been shown to be photoactive and effective to oxidate organic pollutant and photoreduce CO2 to useful compounds. In this dissertation, a monolithic optical fiber reactor (MOFR) coated with inverse opal titania, which uses optical fibers as light-transmitting conductor and support of catalyst, was developed for both photodegradation and photoreduction. 1,2-dichlorobenzene, a volatile organic compound (VOC), was selected as the organic pollutant. This configuration of reactor and catalyst provides a high surface area, enhances mass transfer within the catalyst, manipulates photons transmission …
Dose Titration Of Sericea Lespedeza Leaf Meal On Haemonchus Contortus Infection In Crossbred Lambs, Dana Alicia Pollard
Dose Titration Of Sericea Lespedeza Leaf Meal On Haemonchus Contortus Infection In Crossbred Lambs, Dana Alicia Pollard
LSU Master's Theses
Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasitism is a problem for small ruminant producers. Haemonchus contortus is the most detrimental because of substantial economic losses. Over the past decades, chemical anthelmintics have been used to control GINs. Recently, GINs have developed resistance to most anthelmintics, and now reliance on anthelmintics is not possible. Alternative control methods are needed. Also, the use of fewer chemicals in agricultural products has called for alternative methods to be less synthetic and more organic. One promising alternative method is the feeding of condensed tannin (CT) containing forages as either fresh forage or dried products such as hay, ground …
Environmental Influences On The Mobility And Speciation Of Arsenic In The Geothermal Waters Of El Tatio Geyser Field, Chile, Lindsey R. Johnson
Environmental Influences On The Mobility And Speciation Of Arsenic In The Geothermal Waters Of El Tatio Geyser Field, Chile, Lindsey R. Johnson
LSU Master's Theses
El Tatio geyser field, northern Chile, impacts regional water quality, policy, and agricultural commerce due to the geothermal waters containing high concentrations of naturally-occurring arsenic (As). In the circumneutral pH, non-sulfidic thermal waters at El Tatio, dissolved arsenite [As(III)] dominates geyser discharge water upstream, but dissolved arsenate [As(V)] dominates downstream. Microbial mats and sediments were analyzed for changes in As speciation using X-ray spectroscopy methods, such as XANES and EXAFS at both the As and Fe K-edges, combined with ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and molecular genetics, to understand As cycling. The sediments and microbial mats were dominated by As(V) speciated as both …
Platforms And Protocols For The Multidimensional Microchip Electrophoretic Analysis Of Complex Proteomes, John K. Osiri
Platforms And Protocols For The Multidimensional Microchip Electrophoretic Analysis Of Complex Proteomes, John K. Osiri
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The need for rapid, portable and high-throughput systems in proteomics is now prevalent because of demands for generating new protein-based disease biomarkers. However, 2-D protein profile patterns are lending themselves as potential diagnostic tools for biomarker discovery. It is difficult to identify protein biomarkers which are low abundant in the presence of highly abundant proteins, especially in complex biological samples like serum. Protein profiles from 2-D separation of the protein content of cells or body fluids, which are unique to certain physiological or pathological states, are currently available on internet databases. In this work, we demonstrate the ability to separate …

Examining Successful Recuritment Strategies Utilized By Volunteer Alumni, James Eric Prudhomme
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to describe the manner in which volunteer alumni recruiters at a flagship institution were able to recruit prospective students both in and out of the formal recruitment setting. Due to the challenges facing Louisiana State University with out-of-state recruitment, volunteer alumni recruiters provide a cost-effective alternative to assist this effort. Findings of this study can be used to expand the current alumni volunteer recruitment effort by providing insight into the strategies that result in success in the recruitment process, all the while encouraging fellow alumni to assist their effort. The methodology for …
Amyloid Aggregation-Mitigating Peptides As Potential Alzheimer's Drugs, Cyrus Kipkurui Bett
Amyloid Aggregation-Mitigating Peptides As Potential Alzheimer's Drugs, Cyrus Kipkurui Bett
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Neuronal cytotoxicity observed in Alzheimer¡¦s disease (AD) is linked to the aggregation of £]-amyloid peptide (A£]) into toxic forms. Increasing evidence points to oligomeric species as the neurotoxic species compared to fibrils; disruption or inhibition of A£]ƒnself-assembly into oligomeric or fibrillar forms remains a viable therapeutic strategy to reduce A£] neurotoxicity. Amyloid aggregation mitigating peptides (AAMPs) were designed based on the A£]ƒn¡§hydrophobic core¡¨ A£]17-20, with C£\,£\-disubstituted amino acidsƒnƒv£\£\AAs) added into this core as disrupting agents. The number, distribution, and side chain functionality of £\£\AAs incorporated into the mitigator sequence was found influences the resultant aggregate morphology as indicated by ex-situ …
Single-Molecule Detection Of Unique Genome Signatures: Applications In Molecular Diagnostics And Homeland Security, Jason M. Emory
Single-Molecule Detection Of Unique Genome Signatures: Applications In Molecular Diagnostics And Homeland Security, Jason M. Emory
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Single-molecule detection (SMD) offers an attractive approach for identifying the presence of certain markers that can be used for in vitro molecular diagnostics in a near real-time format. The ability to eliminate sample processing steps afforded by the ultra-high sensitivity associated with SMD yields an increased sampling pipeline. When SMD and microfluidics are used in conjunction with nucleic acid-based assays such as the ligase detection reaction coupled with single-pair fluorescent resonance energy transfer (LDR-spFRET), complete molecular profiling and screening of certain cancers, pathogenic bacteria, and other biomarkers becomes possible at remarkable speeds and sensitivities with high specificity. The merging of …
The Effects Of Being Placed In Special Education Classes Versus General Education Classes And Teacher Certification On Students' High-Stakes Testing Scores, Bethany Ann Porter
The Effects Of Being Placed In Special Education Classes Versus General Education Classes And Teacher Certification On Students' High-Stakes Testing Scores, Bethany Ann Porter
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The introduction of new laws such as the amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 1997) and the No Child Left Behind Act have changed education for special education students in the United States. Students with disabilities are now more frequently being held to the same standards as those students without disabilities. These federal laws are designed to help close the achievement gap among all students regardless of race, gender, poverty, or disability status. Special education students are now required to participate in statewide high-stakes testing programs alongside their nondisabled peers. Another movement involves including students with disabilities …
Collpas As Activity Hotspots For Frugivorous Bats (Stenodermatinae) In The Peruvian Amazon: Underlying Mechanisms And Conservation Implications, Adriana Bravo Ordonez
Collpas As Activity Hotspots For Frugivorous Bats (Stenodermatinae) In The Peruvian Amazon: Underlying Mechanisms And Conservation Implications, Adriana Bravo Ordonez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In western Amazonia, large numbers of frugivorous bats regularly visit natural forest clearings known locally as collpas (also called clay licks or mineral licks). Bats arrive at collpas to drink water that has accumulated in depressions created by larger mammals that consume soil. Although collpa visitation by bats appears relatively common in western Amazonia, little is known about its causes and its ecological implications. In this dissertation I describe general and seasonal patterns of collpa visitation by frugivorous bats in the Peruvian Amazon, and I investigate potential explanations for this unique behavior. Regardless of season, collpas seem to be activity …
The Syntheses Of Methyl Jasmonate And Analogs Of Alpha-Methylene-Gamma-Butyrolactone Utilizing Titanium Medicated Cyclocarbonylation, Steve O. Lawrence
The Syntheses Of Methyl Jasmonate And Analogs Of Alpha-Methylene-Gamma-Butyrolactone Utilizing Titanium Medicated Cyclocarbonylation, Steve O. Lawrence
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
From its humble beginnings as a novel carbon–carbon bond forming reaction, the Pauson–Khand reaction has lead to the synthetic development of a variety of natural products. One particular variation of the Pauson–Khand reaction was called the hetero Pauson–Khand. This reaction differs from the normal Pauson–Khand reaction because the reaction employs an intramolecular titanium mediated cycloaddition using enal and enones instead of alkenes and alkynes functional groups to prepare a variety of natural products. These natural products usually contain a bicyclic cyclopentenone core. Because the new ring contains a hetero atom, the name hetero Pauson–Khand was coined. Alpha–Methylene–Gamma–Butyrolactones posses a wide …
The Effects Of Increasing The Risk Perception Of High-Risk Behaviors On Decision Making Among College Daily Smokers And Never-Smokers, Scott Patterson
The Effects Of Increasing The Risk Perception Of High-Risk Behaviors On Decision Making Among College Daily Smokers And Never-Smokers, Scott Patterson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Participation in high-risk behaviors, such as substance use or dangerous driving practices, is widely reported by young adults and college students. Psychosocial theories explain participation in high-risk behaviors by the effects of risk perception on the outcome of behavior. Physiological researchers assert that biological factors (such as the role of the prefrontal cortex) better account for participation in high-risk behaviors based on impulsive decision-making patterns in substance users. The current study explored the relationship between impulsive decision-making and risk perception by assessing the impact of changes in high-risk perceptions on a measure of impulsive decision-making (delay discounting task). A sample …
Testicular Toxicity And The Potential For 1, 2 -Ethlyene Dichloride (Edc) To Initiate Epigenetic Disruption Of The Paternal Genome, Harold J. Daigle
Testicular Toxicity And The Potential For 1, 2 -Ethlyene Dichloride (Edc) To Initiate Epigenetic Disruption Of The Paternal Genome, Harold J. Daigle
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Our genetic inheritance begins with one genome copy from each parent. The presence of one or more errors in either the maternal or the paternal genome can lead to genetic disease or disruption of the embryonic program and potential loss of the offspring. Numerous chemical and physical toxicants are known to produce germ line mutagenesis based on their ability to produce DNA sequence mutations. Exposures to these cytotoxic and mutagenic agents pose a risk for human offspring. However, very little is known regarding the sensitivity of the epigenetic patterns involved in reproductive functions to adverse effects of chemical agents. The …
Investigations Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Ergosterol Biosynthesis, Kristy Marie Brumfield
Investigations Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Ergosterol Biosynthesis, Kristy Marie Brumfield
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Ergosterol is the major sterol found in the membranes of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. While past studies have identified some ergosterol mutants in C. reinhardtii, very little is known about sterol biosynthesis pathways in this species. With the elucidation of the Chlamydomonas genome, bioinformatics analysis has allowed us to determine potential genes involved in ergosterol biosynthesis. With this knowledge, a working model of the pathway was designed for future analysis. Several of the ergosterol biosynthetic genes were analyzed in respect to their role and involvement in flagellar regeneration. These genes were upregulated during the regrowth of the flagella. Also Chlamydomonas strains lacking …
Historic Sediment Accretion Rates In A Louisiana Coastal Marsh And Implications For Sustainability, Rebekah Perkins Smith
Historic Sediment Accretion Rates In A Louisiana Coastal Marsh And Implications For Sustainability, Rebekah Perkins Smith
LSU Master's Theses
Deltaic marshes of the Mississippi River in Louisiana disappeared at a rate of 88 km2 annually from 1956 to 2000 (Barras et al. 2003) as marshes become inundated by sea water. Marsh surface elevation varies spatially and temporally due to fluvial sediment deposition, resuspension, erosion, compaction, sea level rise, and organic matter accumulation and decomposition. If net accretion from sediment deposition and/or peat production is insufficient, marshes respond to sea level rise by migrating landward. Since human development prevents landward migration of marsh in Breton Sound Basin, Louisiana, marsh sustainability can only be achieved if vertical accretion keeps pace with …

Atomistic Simulations Of Lipid Bilayers In The Presence Of Dimethylsulfoxide, Raghava Alapati
Atomistic Simulations Of Lipid Bilayers In The Presence Of Dimethylsulfoxide, Raghava Alapati
LSU Master's Theses
In a typical cryopreservation protocol, the system to be preserved is first equilibrated with chemicals known as cryoprotective agents (CPAs). CPAs have been shown to alleviate cell damage from either the solute effects or the formation of intracellular ice during the subsequent freezing process. Thus, an extensive body of literature reporting the effects of CPAs on cellular systems has been accumulated over the last 50 years; detailing largely experimental interactions between cell systems and chemicals. Recent advances in computational methodology now offer an additional dimension in our ability to understand the molecular interactions between cell membranes, idealized as lipid bilayers …

Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Content Of Breast Milk From Women With And Without Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Julissa Marisel Salguero
Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Content Of Breast Milk From Women With And Without Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Julissa Marisel Salguero
LSU Master's Theses
Reduced insulin sensitivity and abnormal nutrient metabolism in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) may compromise polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of breast milk. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and compare PUFA milk composition of women with and without GDM. Breast milk collections were performed in GDM (n=6) and controls (n=12) at weeks 2, 6, 10 and 12 postpartum using a hospital grade breast pump. Estimated dietary intake of PUFA and use of prenatal supplements containing DHA (PS/DHA) was determined by 24-hour dietary recalls conducted after each milk collection. Based on these preliminary data, milk docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; …
Physical And Chemical Factors Controlling Carbon Gas Emissions And Organic Matter Transformation In Coastal Wetlands, Syam Kumar Dodla
Physical And Chemical Factors Controlling Carbon Gas Emissions And Organic Matter Transformation In Coastal Wetlands, Syam Kumar Dodla
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Wetlands are important sinks for the atmospheric carbon (C) and play a major role in the global carbon cycle. However, factors impacting wetland soil C transformations and C gas production are not yet well understood. Elucidating these influences is especially important to Louisiana as wetlands are being impacted by salt water intrusion, subsidence and Mississippi river water diversion activities. This study evaluates, the effects of salinity, ions in river and sea water (K+, Ca2+) , clays and electron acceptors (NO3-, SO42-) on soil C transformations as well as C gas production from Louisiana coastal wetlands. Wetland soils were collected from …
Antiviral Chemotherapeutic Agents Against Equine Herpesvirus Type 1: The Mechanism Of Antiviral Effects Of Porphyrin Derivatives, Galena V. Rybachuk
Antiviral Chemotherapeutic Agents Against Equine Herpesvirus Type 1: The Mechanism Of Antiviral Effects Of Porphyrin Derivatives, Galena V. Rybachuk
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) is an important ubiquitous enzootic equine pathogen, causing significant economic losses to the horse industry. Despite extensive vaccination protocols, EHV-1 continues to be a major cause of epidemic abortion, perinatal mortality, respiratory disease and neurologic disease. EHV-1 infections are usually dealt with by using management practices that limit spread of the disease and secondary complications, providing symptomatic relief to infected horses, but no specific treatment is available. New therapeutic or virucidal agents could have great utility in slowing both the progression and spread of the disease in an epidemic situation. A number of porphyrins and their derivatives …

The Effects Of Geomorphology And Primary Productivity On Neotropical Leaf Litter Herpetofauna: Implications For Amazonian Rainforest Conservation, Jessica L. Deichmann
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Amazon rainforest encompasses over one billion acres of South America and sustains remarkable biodiversity. Despite the large body of research stemming from this region, little is known about the effects of geomorphology and primary productivity on the fauna of Amazonia, and on reptiles and amphibians in particular. In my dissertation, I examine differences in the abundance, biomass and species richness of secondary consumers in the leaf litter herpetofauna communities on young and ancient soils. Herein, I develop methods to utilize existing data sets and museum collections in new studies involving community biomass. I found that, although the process of …
The Role Of Climate Variability And Riverine Pulsing In The Community Dynamics Of Estuarine Nekton In Breton Sound, Louisiana, Bryan Patrick Piazza
The Role Of Climate Variability And Riverine Pulsing In The Community Dynamics Of Estuarine Nekton In Breton Sound, Louisiana, Bryan Patrick Piazza
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Climate controls biotic community composition at multiple spatiotemporal scales through variability in environmental control mechanisms (assembly filters). This research investigated the role of climate variability in the community dynamics of estuarine nekton in Breton Sound estuary, Louisiana, and, specifically the effects of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), freshwater discharge, and a tropical cyclone. A teleconnection was found between ENSO and juvenile brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus) abundance in Breton Sound from 1988 – 2007. ENSO affected winter weather conditions (air pressure, temperature and precipitation), and spring brown shrimp abundance in Breton Sound. Juvenile brown shrimp abundance lagged ENSO by …
