Soil Climate And Pedology Of The Transylvanian Plain, Romania, Beatrix Haggard Jan 2012

Soil Climate And Pedology Of The Transylvanian Plain, Romania, Beatrix Haggard

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Transylvanian Plain (TP) is a 395,000 ha region located in north-central Romania and is an area of agronomic importance in the region. The TP is characterized by hilly terrain, dissected by the Someş and Mureş Rivers. The terrain creates a unique situation when assessing pedology and soil temperature. Soils can change quickly across the landscape in the TP due to the terrain. To account for these differences, soil temperature was measured to predict soil temperatures as well as to evaluate growing conditions. Twenty stations were installed for a long-term temperature and pedology study. Pedons were described for morphological characterization …

The Moderating Effect Of Autism Symptomology On The Relationship Of Cognitive And Adaptive Functioning With Anxiety Symptoms In Infants And Toddlers, Robert D. Rieske Jan 2012

The Moderating Effect Of Autism Symptomology On The Relationship Of Cognitive And Adaptive Functioning With Anxiety Symptoms In Infants And Toddlers, Robert D. Rieske

LSU Master's Theses

Anxiety disorders have been shown to have a high prevalence rate in the general population and the prevalence in those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is even higher. The detection, diagnosis, and implementation of an early intervention program for these disorders are crucial to the developmental outcome for such individuals. Researchers have shown how cognitive and adaptive functioning are related and affect anxiety symptoms in children as well as the high comorbidity with ASD. The aim of this study was to confirm those relationships, using scores from the BISCUIT-Part 2 (anxiety symptomology) and the BDI-II (Cognitive and Adaptive Developmental Quotient), …

Investigating The Physiological Roles Of Yqja And Yghb: Members Of The Conserved Deda Membrane Protein Family In Escherichia Coli, Rakesh Sikdar Jan 2012

Investigating The Physiological Roles Of Yqja And Yghb: Members Of The Conserved Deda Membrane Protein Family In Escherichia Coli, Rakesh Sikdar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation is to characterize the physiological roles of E. coli YqjA and YghB, which belong to the ancient and conserved DedA protein family of hitherto unknown functions. YqjA and YghB are inner membrane (IM) proteins with 61% amino acid identity and share partially redundant functions. Such characterization is achieved by addressing the phenotypes exhibited by strain BC202 with in-frame deletions of yqjA and yghB. BC202 exhibits cell division defects, inability to grow at temperatures above 42°C and an altered phospholipid composition. The cell division defect of BC202 is attributed to the inefficient secretion of periplasmic amidases …

Infrared Laser Ablation For Biological Mass Spectrometry, Fan Huang Jan 2012

Infrared Laser Ablation For Biological Mass Spectrometry, Fan Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Instrument and technique development and modeling of ionization methods using infrared (IR) laser desorption and ablation for mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of chemical and biochemical samples are described. Infrared lasers are highly efficient at sample removal and post-ablation ionization of materials removed by IR laser can be used to improve ionization efficiency. Fundamental studies of the physical processes in laser ablation mass spectrometry can help elucidate the mechanism. In this research, an infrared/ultraviolet two-laser matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) MS was developed for analysis of biomolecules. An infrared laser was used to ablate a mixture of analyte and matrix, and …

Shear Strength Evaluation Of An Erosional Soil System At Fourchon Beach, Jacques Pierre Boudreaux Jan 2012

Shear Strength Evaluation Of An Erosional Soil System At Fourchon Beach, Jacques Pierre Boudreaux

LSU Master's Theses

South Louisiana is vanishing. Subsidence due to relative sea level rise with erosion of weak wetland soils together produce devastating rates of land loss for this area. It is believed that high rates of erosion are due to weak strength properties of fine-grained sediments in the beaches, marshes, and other wetlands in coastal Louisiana. Wave action is known to initiate the movement of weak coastal soils in a manner that is related to the difference between the shear stresses applied by waves and the critical shear strength of erosional sediments. Direct shear tests were performed on samples obtained from the …

Bird Ecology And Conservation In Peru's High Andean Petlands, Richard Edward Gibbons Jan 2012

Bird Ecology And Conservation In Peru's High Andean Petlands, Richard Edward Gibbons

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

High in the Andes, a unique peatland habitat exists precariously above the frostline and below snowline. These “bofedales”, as they are called in Peru, support an extraordinary avifauna consisting of both boreal and austral migratory species and residents. This ecosystem is predicted to be significantly reduced as a result of global climate change. We endeavored to understand the habitat associations and seasonality of the avian assemblage occurring in these permanent wetlands. Numerous detections of species outside of their documented geographic range provided an opportunity to assess geographic ranges using niche modeling. This novel approach provided insights and inferences for assessing …

Teacher Insights On High-Stakes Standardized Assessments: The Impact Of School Reform Policy On The Classroom, Jennifer Timmer Jan 2012

Teacher Insights On High-Stakes Standardized Assessments: The Impact Of School Reform Policy On The Classroom, Jennifer Timmer

LSU Master's Theses

Education reform policies have focused on high-stakes assessments primarily utilizing standardized tests for accountability purposes. As testing practices have evolved due to a variety of factors throughout the past century or so, they have become fully integrated into public schooling in the United States. These tests are having a marked impact on teachers and education, as teachers feel pressure to produce exceptional student results and modify their instructional practices, often “teaching to the test” and narrowing the curriculum in order to focus on the requirements of the mandates. This study examines a survey of public school teachers to ascertain their …

Investigations Into The Role Of Humic Acid In Biomembrane Permeability And The Effects Of Naturally Formed Gold And Silver Nanoparticles On These Interactions, Loice Marklyne Ojwang Jan 2012

Investigations Into The Role Of Humic Acid In Biomembrane Permeability And The Effects Of Naturally Formed Gold And Silver Nanoparticles On These Interactions, Loice Marklyne Ojwang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The mechanism and kinetics of the interaction of humic acids (HAs) with a 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-Sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (POPC) large unilamellar vesicle (LUV) model biomembrane system were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. All three HAs studied induced a perturbation to the biomembrane bilayer structure at pH 4.8. Concentration dependence studies revealed that biomembrane perturbation increased with increasing HA concentrations for Suwannee River HA (SWHA) from 0 to 20 mg C/L. For both Leonardite HA (LAHA) and Florida Peat HA (FPHA) aggregation influenced biomembrane perturbation at concentrations above 5 and 7.5 mg C/L, respectively. Temperature studies over the environmentally relevant ranges of 10 to 30 °C …

The Effect Of Inorganic Fillers On The Properties Of Wood Plastic Composites, Birm June Kim Jan 2012

The Effect Of Inorganic Fillers On The Properties Of Wood Plastic Composites, Birm June Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The effect of inorganic fillers including precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), glass fiber (GF), and nano-clay on properties of structured WPCs was investigated. In PCC-bamboo-polymer hybrid composites, tensile and flexural moduli were improved with increasing PCC content. After silane treatment of bamboo, RBF-filled hybrid composites showed better mechanical properties compared to those of GBP-filled hybrid composites. The hybrid composites showed 3-4 times higher modulus than those of PCC-filled composites at high PCC levels. Various property differences were observed between weak- and strong-core coextruded systems with shell composition changes. While the weak-core systems showed improved flexural strengths compared to their core-only control, …

Design, Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Peptides As Different Medical Treatment, Krystal Renee Fontenot Jan 2012

Design, Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Peptides As Different Medical Treatment, Krystal Renee Fontenot

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A peptide is defined, as a molecule that contains less than fifty amino acids; anything larger is a protein. Peptides are important molecules because they have diverse uses. Peptides were utilized in two ways: 1) Peptide bioconjugates containing a fluorescent porphyrin or phthalocyanine macrocycle were designed and investigated, with or without a PEG moiety for selective targeting of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). 2) Amyloid aggregating mitigating peptides (AAMPs) was synthesized and investigated containing polar amino acids, MiniPEGs, and/or ααAAs that have the ability to inhibit and disrupt Amyloid Beta (Aβ). The peptide bioconjugates containing a porphyrin or phthalocyanine …

Efficacy Of Multifunctionalized Saccharide Constructs For The Attenuation Of Amyloid-Beta Toxicity, Dhruva Dilip Dhavale Jan 2012

Efficacy Of Multifunctionalized Saccharide Constructs For The Attenuation Of Amyloid-Beta Toxicity, Dhruva Dilip Dhavale

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There is evidence that amyloid-beta (Aβ) toxicity is mediated through interactions and binding with neuronal surface sialic acids in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The binding affinity is higher if the sialic acids are clustered and toxicity of Aβ was attenuated by removal of neuronal sialic acids. Thus, interfering with cell membrane-Aβ binding using biomimetics that could reproduce the clustered sialic acid structure could present us with a potential target for therapeutic intervention in AD. Based on this hypothesis, we developed several multifunctionalized sialic acid labeled chitosan compounds of different valency, or number of sialic acid per chitosan molecule, to attenuate Aβ …

"Crappy New Year": Evaluation, Stance And Drinking Stories, Martin Edward Pfeiffer Jan 2012

"Crappy New Year": Evaluation, Stance And Drinking Stories, Martin Edward Pfeiffer

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is an examination of drinking stories and how authors, through linguistic means, achieve narrative, social, and cultural goals. Language is a biological fact of Homo sapiens and narrative is a universal method by which humans make sense of their world. Humans’ primeval relationship with alcohol is an expression of the innate desire to achieve altered states of consciousness. To study drinking stories is to study a manifestation of the essence of humanity. This research employs the narrative theories of Labov (1997) and Labov and Waletzky (1967) combined with Du Bois’s (2007) model of stance. I focus on the …

Technology In The Classroom: Effect Of Student Blogging On Learning Gains In A High School Classroom, Mandy Lynn Lebourgeois

LSU Master's Theses

This study explores the benefits of student use of web logs (blogs) in a high school Biology classroom. Students were assigned to blog by answering questions on topics from the Miller and Levine (2010) Biology textbook, which correlated to the Louisiana Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs), benchmarks that should be familiar to students at the end of a course. Raw gains (from pretest to posttest) were compared for the study group of 124 ninth and tenth grade students to determine if blogging increased student learning gains by increasing student accountability. The Louisiana Enhanced Assessment of Grade-Level Expectations (EAGLE) test bank was used …

Factors Affecting University Stem Faculty Job Satisfaction, Lisa Babin Verret Jan 2012

Factors Affecting University Stem Faculty Job Satisfaction, Lisa Babin Verret

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many job satisfaction studies have been done on faculty in higher education, but very little research has focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty. Through these studies, very little consensus has been reached on the satisfaction levels of male and female faculty. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the job satisfaction of tenured and tenure-track male and female STEM faculty at research institutions in six states. Moreover, the study sought to examine the relationship between STEM faculty job satisfaction and potential explanatory factors: gender, rank, tenure, salary, family status, whether or not there are children …

Evaluation Of Methods For Suppressing Estrus And Ovulation In Mares: Sustained Release Injections Of Altrenogest Versus Deslorelin Acetate, Thomas J. Stevens

LSU Master's Theses

Two experiments assessed the potential of altrenogest, an artificial progestogen, and deslorelin acetate, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, for suppressing estrus and ovulation in cyclic mares. In the first experiment, mares were administered a luteolytic dose of prostaglandin-F2á on d 6 of diestrus, and were then treated with 1 of 3 formulations of altrenogest in slow-release vehicle (6 mares/group): 1) Biorelease altrenogest LA150 (225 mg total as a 1.5 mL injection); 2) Biorelease altrenogest LA225 (225 mg total as a 1.0 mL injection); or 3) Biorelease altrenogest LA225 (450 mg total as a 2.0 mL injection). Six control mares received …

Role Of Herpes Simplex Type I Glycoproteins In Entry And Cell-Cell Fusion, Sona Chowdhury Jan 2012

Role Of Herpes Simplex Type I Glycoproteins In Entry And Cell-Cell Fusion, Sona Chowdhury

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-1) is a neurotropic virus that infects primarily mucocutaneous epithelial cells and nervous tissue. Membrane fusion is an important aspect of the HSV-1 lifecycle, that occurs during viral entry (virus-cell fusion), viral spread (cell-to-cell fusion), as well as, during virion morphogenesis (assembly and egress). These membrane fusion steps involve complex interactions between multiple viral glycoproteins and cellular receptors. HSV-1 glycoprotein B (gB) is necessary but not sufficient for membrane fusion events. Despite the fact, that the majority of known hypermorphic mutations which cause extensive virus-induced cell fusion occur within glycoprotein K (gK); yet the role …

Extending Social Cognitive Career Theory Into The Entrepreneurship Domain: Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy's Mediating Role Between Inputs, Outcome Expectations, And Intentions, Eric William Liguori Jan 2012

Extending Social Cognitive Career Theory Into The Entrepreneurship Domain: Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy's Mediating Role Between Inputs, Outcome Expectations, And Intentions, Eric William Liguori

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Self-efficacy is among the most important constructs in recent entrepreneurship literature (Forbes, 2005), and is central to our understanding of entrepreneurial phenomena. Accordingly, it often captures the attention of policy makers, community leaders, educators and entrepreneurship advocates (e.g., Shook & Bratianu, 2010; Descant, 2010; McCollister, 2011; Chapman, 2011). In this dissertation, I seek to expand upon the extant knowledge of self-efficacy research by undertaking three specific objectives. First, I apply a social cognitive career theory (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994) to entrepreneurship, and posit that this is a more robust theoretical framework to study individual entrepreneurial activity. Second, I explore …

Thermal Field Investigations And Applications To Integral Abutment Bridges With Frp Panels, Bo Kong Jan 2012

Thermal Field Investigations And Applications To Integral Abutment Bridges With Frp Panels, Bo Kong

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Expansion joints are often considered as one of the most vulnerable elements affecting the sustainability of traditional jointed bridges. Over the past several decades, a new type of integral abutment bridge (IAB) has been proposed, where the joints are eliminated at the abutments and/or along the length of the bridges. Although with wide acceptances, the IABs have not been largely applied in practice. Many arguments are unsettled and there are no national design guidelines currently. Among all, the thermal behavior is one of the most concerned issues, and that, to a large extent, limits the maximum length of IABs that …

Development Of An Estradiol-Dopamine Anagonist Protocol For Inducing Ovulation In Seasonally Anovulatory Mares, Pamela Boliew Mitcham Jan 2012

Development Of An Estradiol-Dopamine Anagonist Protocol For Inducing Ovulation In Seasonally Anovulatory Mares, Pamela Boliew Mitcham

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Five experiments were conducted to assess potential improvements in a protocol for inducing ovulation in seasonally anovulatory mares based upon estradiol pretreatment followed by dopamine antagonist injection. The first experiment compared various doses of estradiol cypionate (ECP) and domperidone (in biodegradable microparticles), as well as additions and deletions to the protocol. It was concluded that as little as 75 mg ECP and as little as 1.5 g of domperidone could be used with success, but that both components were required. In the second experiment, timing of the injection (1, 6, or 11 days apart) and ECP dose were assessed. It …

Ionic Materials For Applications In Sensing And Optoelectronics, Sergio L. De Rooy Jan 2012

Ionic Materials For Applications In Sensing And Optoelectronics, Sergio L. De Rooy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Organic salts consist of bulky anions and/or cations whose properties can be tailored for specific purposes. Ionic liquids (ILs) are (semi)organic salts with melting points below 100 ºC. They typically exhibit neglible vapor pressures, high thermal stability, wide liquidus range, and tunable solubility. Moreover specific functions can be built into their respective ions. The first part of the dissertation involves discussions of chiral ionic liquids with additional protic, magnetic, and magneto-luminescent properties, respectively. In addition to their enantioselective sensing capabilities, the ILs may find use in chiral separations and catalysis. The second part of the dissertation involves discussions of fluorescent …

Molecular Approaches To Detect And Control Cercospora Kikuchii In Soybeans, Ashok Kumar Chanda Jan 2012

Molecular Approaches To Detect And Control Cercospora Kikuchii In Soybeans, Ashok Kumar Chanda

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cercospora leaf blight (CLB) caused by Cercospora kikuchii, has become a troublesome disease in the southern United States. C. kikuchii produces a non-hostspecific phytotoxin and a pathogenicity factor known as cercosporin during infection of soybean. A quantitative real-time PCR assay was developed for detection and quantification of C. kikuchii. The sensitivity of detection is 1 pg of genomic DNA. The assay detected the presence of C. kikuchii in soybean leaves long before the appearance of disease symptoms. C. kikuchii DNA levels in soybean leaves increased slowly during early soybean development, followed by a quick increase at late reproductive stages. Results …

Southern Bellas: The Construction Of Mestiza Identity In Southern Narratives, Wendy Aimee Braun Jan 2012

Southern Bellas: The Construction Of Mestiza Identity In Southern Narratives, Wendy Aimee Braun

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This project analyzes representations and self-representations of Mestizas living in areas of the Deep South that lack a significant Latino presence. Incorporating a range of media, I take a comparative approach to Southern cultural narratives and propose a re-reading of these works through an examination of identity formation and cultural negotiation. By centering the Southern Mestiza, this dissertation advances concepts of intersectionality to address the role of region, as well as race and gender, in the representation and experiences of women often overlooked in Southern and U.S. Latino studies. The Introductory chapter summarizes the theoretical framework for the study, including …

Painting A Surrealist Case Study Tableau: Culturally Relevant Post-Disaster Education Programming, Jolanta Smolen Santana Jan 2012

Painting A Surrealist Case Study Tableau: Culturally Relevant Post-Disaster Education Programming, Jolanta Smolen Santana

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This retrospective study explores how each disaster site needs to be considered as its own individual portrait for analysis and how inclusion of cultural elements contributes to the recovery of those affected by the disaster and helps in reinstating their cultural identity. This study was conducted after hurricane Katrina’s landfall, at the largest FEMA trailer park, Renaissance Village, from its inception in October 2005 until its closure June 2008. It portrays how programs may ensure their sustainability if cultural elements are included in the program design, development, and delivery of services. The nuanced notions of culture are predominantly recognized in …

Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Nutrients Dynamics In Restored Wetlands Of The Mississippi River Basin, Christopher Lundberg Jan 2012

Greenhouse Gas Emissions And Nutrients Dynamics In Restored Wetlands Of The Mississippi River Basin, Christopher Lundberg

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Greenhouse gases were sampled during spring and summer months in 2010 and 2011 at two sites in the Mississippi River Basin: a riparian forested wetland under restored flood pulsing near Memphis, TN and a coastal estuarine marsh complex impacted by a river diversion at Caernarvon, LA. Mean methane fluxes at Caernarvon (-0.09 g CH4-C m-2 d-1) were lower than those at Memphis (0.53 g CH4-C m-2 d-1), and did not differ between seasons. Nitrous oxide fluxes were generally below detection limits. Fluxes were uncorrelated with water depth, soil temperature, and ambient air temperature, though sampling occurred over a narrow range …

Composition And Physiological Characteristics Of The University Lake Ecosystem Phytoplankton Community: Impacts Of Seasonal And Episodic Events, Brianne Elizabeth Norris Jan 2012

Composition And Physiological Characteristics Of The University Lake Ecosystem Phytoplankton Community: Impacts Of Seasonal And Episodic Events, Brianne Elizabeth Norris

LSU Master's Theses

This research determined the changes in phytoplankton community composition in a shallow subtropical lake, influenced by urban surroundings. Specifically this research focused on the effects of seasonal progression and episodic events on the changing inorganic nutrient dynamics and the effects those dynamics had on the phytoplankton community composition and productivity. This research quantified gross primary production and respiration to determine if seasonality or episodic events were acting as forcing functions of the phytoplankton community composition. Water samples were collected weekly at three sites on the lake’s perimeter, as well as following episodic events, to monitor nitrate (NO3), phosphate (PO4-3), ammonium …

An Evaluation Of Alternative Approaches For Simulating Animal Movement In Spatially-Explicit Individual-Based Models, Katherine Shepard Watkins Jan 2012

An Evaluation Of Alternative Approaches For Simulating Animal Movement In Spatially-Explicit Individual-Based Models, Katherine Shepard Watkins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Simulating animal movement in spatially-explicit individual-based models (IBMs) is both challenging and critically important to accurately estimating population dynamics. I compared four distinct movement approaches or sub-models (restricted-area search, kinesis, event-based, and run and tumble) in a series of simulation experiments. I used an IBM loosely based on a small pelagic fish that simulated growth, mortality, and movement of a cohort on a 2-dimensional grid. First, I tested the sub-models calibrated (i.e., trained) with a genetic algorithm in one set of environmental conditions in three other novel environments. The sub-models performed well, except restricted-area search and event-based that needed to …

The Impact Of An Informal Science Learning Environment On The Environmentally Responsible Behavior Of Adults: A Case Study, Kathryn Ann March Jan 2012

The Impact Of An Informal Science Learning Environment On The Environmentally Responsible Behavior Of Adults: A Case Study, Kathryn Ann March

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since environmental education’s emergence in America, the field has been primarily focused on increasing environmental awareness, attitudes, knowledge, skills, and behavior. Yet the nation’s overall level of environmental literacy, especially with regard to the performance of environmentally responsible behaviors, continues to be low (Coyle, 2005). Unlike school-based education programs, which only reach a segment of the population, informal sites have the potential to influence learners of many ages and diverse backgrounds (NRC, 2009). Informal science learning environments (ISLEs) have been shown to provide personally meaningful learning experiences and have the potential to impact environmentally responsible decisions and actions (Falk, 2005). …

Inside The Seed Of School Accountability: An African-Centered Analysis, Rodrick Lerone Jenkins Jan 2012

Inside The Seed Of School Accountability: An African-Centered Analysis, Rodrick Lerone Jenkins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

I use Marimba Ani’s Asili concept as defined in Yurugu to examine the school accountability model. By school accountability model, I mean the school model that consists of privately managed “public schools” regulated by state testing programs. I argue that school accountability is essentially oppressive and its success depends on the falsification of African and African American history. Ani explains that Asili is a Kiswalhili term meaning “beginning,” “origin,” “source,” “nature (in the sense of the ‘nature’ of a person or thing),” “essence,” or “fundamental principle.” Furthermore, Ani writes that seed is an “ubiquitous African analogical symbol in African philosophical …

This thesis emphasizes on an alternate instructional tool called “Concept Map”. The goal of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using concept maps in improving the science achievement of 10th -grade students and compare it with a traditional approach for a Biology unit. Furthermore, the interaction of the student’s concept mapping ability and their learning gains was investigated. Both the control and the experimental groups were required to take a pre test before instruction and a posttest at the end of three weeks. The test consisting of 31 questions was used to assess learning gains on a Biology …

Queer Utopian Geographies And Cold War Poetry, Brigitte Natalie Mccray Jan 2012

Queer Utopian Geographies And Cold War Poetry, Brigitte Natalie Mccray

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Queer Utopian Geographies and Cold War Poetry intervenes in the general narrative about Cold War culture, made even more famous by such recent popular shows like Mad Men and Pan Am, that describes the era as a repressed society in desperate need of liberation. While indeed Cold War America was a time of paranoia and loyalty oaths, even before the Stonewall Riots of 1969 gay men and lesbians found subtle ways to resist popular media and government discourse that perpetuated the myth that the homosexual was the anti-citizen. A number of gay men and lesbians traveled extensively to escape this …
