Signal Transduction And Rickettsial Infection Of Tick Cells, Natthida Petchampai
Signal Transduction And Rickettsial Infection Of Tick Cells, Natthida Petchampai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia are obligate intracellular bacteria that are carried by ticks. One such tick, Dermacentor variabilis is a vector for the etiologic agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, R. rickettsii. These ticks also carry a non-pathogenic R. montanensis, the agent used in this study. Interestingly, field data collected from infected D. variabilis throughout the United States revealed that the majority of Rickettsia in ticks are non-pathogenic species such as R. montanensis. Although ticks serve as both vector and reservoir hosts for SFG Rickettsia, many questions regarding tick-Rickettsia interaction remain unresolved. Therefore, the overall goal of this research …
Novel Computational Tools And Utilization Of The Gut Microbiota For Phylogeographic Inference, Sarah Michelle Hird
Novel Computational Tools And Utilization Of The Gut Microbiota For Phylogeographic Inference, Sarah Michelle Hird
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Genetic data are frequently responsible for biological insight and recent advances in sequencing technology (high-throughput sequencing; HTS) have created massive DNA-sequence based datasets. While these technologies are invaluable, there are many analytical and application issues that need to be addressed. With these data we can ask and answer novel biological questions that were previously inaccessible. One major challenge in applying HTS to biological questions is data management: the file formats and sizes are foreign to many primary researchers. In the second and third chapters of this dissertation, I introduce two pieces of software that allow researchers to utilize HTS with …
Size Kinetics And Mechanics Of Clay-Biopolymer Flocs, Hang Yin
Size Kinetics And Mechanics Of Clay-Biopolymer Flocs, Hang Yin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The suspended cohesive sediments, mostly clay minerals with negative surface charges, usually interact through an array of intermolecular/surface forces (e.g., Coulomb force, van der Waals attractions, and hydrogen bonding) with waterborne organic matter (e.g., exopolymers) and dissolved salts, resulting in fractal, tenuous, and hybrid organic-inorganic flocs or “marine snow”. A pilot and systematic laboratory and theoretical work have been conducted towards a synthetic nanoscale understanding of the flocculation kinetics and mechanics of the clay-exopolymer micro-sized flocs. This systematic study has achieved two impressive objectives: (1) the effect of exopolymer polarity and concentration on the particle size kinetics of clay-exopolymer mixtures …

A Genetic Study On The Virulence Mechanism Of Burkholderia Glumae And, Rice Resistance To Bacterial Panicle Blight And Sheath Blight, Hari Sharan Karki
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Burkholderia glumae is a rice pathogenic bacterium that causes bacterial panicle blight. Some strains of this pathogen produce dark brown pigments when grown on the casamino-acid peptone glucose (CPG) agar medium. A pigment-positive and highly virulent strain of B. glumae, 411gr-6, was randomly mutagenized with mini-Tn5gus, and the resulting mini-Tn5gus derivatives showing altered pigmentation phenotypes were screened on CPG agar plates to identify the genetic elements governing the pigmentation of B. glumae. In this study, several positive and negative regulators, for the pigmentation of B. glumae were identified. During this study, a novel two-component regulatory system (TCRS) composed of the …
Chronic Pain In Entertainment Media: Using Empathy To Reduce Stigma, Rebecca Lang
Chronic Pain In Entertainment Media: Using Empathy To Reduce Stigma, Rebecca Lang
LSU Master's Theses
Entertainment media represent a primary source of health information, making it a prime area of research for wide-spread health issues such as chronic pain. Chronic pain conditions can elicit stigmatization due to pain representing a subjective experience; coming to understand the experience of a person in pain can reduce stigma for that person as well as the entire group of people with chronic pain. Entertainment media, through the use of an engaging narrative and characters, can portray an illness experience that potentially elicits empathy and reduces stigma for chronic pain conditions. This study is among the few to employ empathy …

Electrophoretic Deposition Of Carbon Nanotubes On Silicon Substrates, Anirban Sarkar
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation research describes the feasibility study and investigation of Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for applications in semiconductor research. In recent years, the EPD technique has been considered as an economical, room temperature, solution based wet coating technique for thin and thick CNT films on arbitrary substrates. In this study, fabrication of uniform coatings of acid-treated CNTs has been pursued on bare silicon substrates by EPD from aqueous and organic suspensions. Research endeavors are extended to examine EPD of CNTs on silicon substrates with various surface coatings such as metal (aluminum), insulator layers (silicon dioxide and silicon …
The Effects Of Parent Factors On Children's Separation Anxiety, Anna Catherine May
The Effects Of Parent Factors On Children's Separation Anxiety, Anna Catherine May
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Parental anxiety is a well-known factor that contributes to the development of anxiety in children. However, little is known about how specific parental factors influence the development and trajectory of childhood anxiety. There is also a paucity of research on separation anxiety disorder specifically. Complicating matters, children who suffer from clinically significant separation anxiety tend to be younger and thus it is harder to obtain accurate information from this age group. The purpose of the present study was to determine the mechanism through which parental factors such as somatization, anxiety sensitivity, and separation anxious behaviors might influence the development of …

Medical Issue Or Policy? A Framing Analysis Of The Medical Marijuana Issue In U.S. Newspapers, Christopher Lee Kaiser
LSU Master's Theses
This study conducted a framing analysis of the medical marijuana issue in United States print media. In addition, this analysis investigated whether the medical marijuana issue was portrayed as a policy issue or a medical issue, and based the inquiry in public opinion and health communication literature. This analysis extracted a sample (N=240) from newspaper stories that reported the issue within the past five years in states that have enacted medical marijuana legislation. The framing analysis measured the occurrence of frames in three different categories: gain vs. loss, types of frames, and policy vs. medical. Furthermore, this analysis determined if …
Numerical Evaluation And Analysis Of The Adhesion Phenomena In Thermal Barrier Coating Systems Through Bio-Mimicking Plasma Process, Naser Imran Hossain
Numerical Evaluation And Analysis Of The Adhesion Phenomena In Thermal Barrier Coating Systems Through Bio-Mimicking Plasma Process, Naser Imran Hossain
LSU Master's Theses
Thermal Barrier Coatings or TBCs when abbreviated are an imperative part of the thermal protection system of expensive equipment and machinery in the automobile and aeronautics industry. They provide protection to expensive alloy materials upto a temperature of 2700° C without expensive metallurgical additions. Unfortunately, the problem of coating adhesion has plagued the TBC field for years, leading to catastrophic failures in critical TBC systems. Efforts to chemically improve bond strength has not been entirely successful, so the only other efficient way to do this would be some kind of mechanical interlocking that occurs at micro/nano scales. This research work …
An Alu Element-Based Model Of Human Genome Instability, George Wyndham Cook, Jr.
An Alu Element-Based Model Of Human Genome Instability, George Wyndham Cook, Jr.
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The human genome is strewn with repetitive sequence. An early estimate derived from the draft human genome sequence placed this repetitive content at ~45%. More detailed recent analyses have advanced the idea that the human repetitive and repeat derived contribution to the genome may be closer to 66-69%. The most commonly repeated sequence in the human genome is the Alu element. Alus make up 10.6 percent of all human DNA and have expanded to over one million copies in the human genome reproducing through a copy and paste mechanism. New Alu germline insertions are estimated to occur at a rate …
Model-Based Approaches To Discovering Diversity : New Implementations, Tests Of Adequacy And An Empirical Application To Central American Diptera, Noah M. Reid
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Most of the earth’s biodiversity is unknown to science. With global climate change set to drastically alter its distribution, it is imperative to catalogue it and understand its function in order to preserve it and better understand how this change will impact humanity. Recent technological and statistical advances have in theory made possible increasingly rapid discovery and description of diversity. The statistical properties and performance of these new approaches are still poorly known, however, their integration with complementary methods from disparate disciplines has not been achieved. In this dissertation we present three chapters of original research that advance these areas …
Modeling Temporal And Spatial Variations In Dissolved Oxygen In Amite River, Vahid Zahraeifard
Modeling Temporal And Spatial Variations In Dissolved Oxygen In Amite River, Vahid Zahraeifard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A watershed-based modeling framework is developed in this dissertation for simulating temporal and spatial variations in DO in lowland rivers with organic-rich fine-grained sediment. The modeling framework is based on three major contributions/new models, including (1)VART-DO model for improved estimation of reaeration coefficient (K2) in natural streams, (2)VART-DOS model for simulation of temporal variations in DO in response to sediment resuspension, and (3)VART DO-3L model for simulation of spatial variations in DO. A major advantage of VART-DO model is the capability of simulating DO exchange across the water-sediment interface through the hyporheic exchange mechanism in addition to the air-water exchange. …

A Study Of The Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Ichthyoplankton And Post-Larval Penaeids Recruiting Into A Louisiana Tidal Pass, Matthew John Kupchik
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation attempts to better understand astronomical, meteorological, and oceanographic forcing of offshore-spawned, estuarine-dependent species from continental shelf to estuarine waters through tidal passes. The vertical distribution of zoo-/ichthyoplankton within the inner continental shelf from the Louisiana Offshore Oil Platform monitoring project (1978-1995) provided an important offshore end member for the estuarine recruitment study, and is potentially useful in predicting vulnerabilities to past and future oil spills. The role that atmospheric cold front passages may have on densities and movement of zoo-/ichthyoplankton recruiting through the Bayou Tartellan tidal pass, Louisiana, were analyzed using a Generalized Additive Model. The pre-frontal phase, …
The Effects Of Natural And Anthropogenic Stressors On The Stress Response And Tissue-Level Response In Teleost Fish, Benjamin David Dubansky
The Effects Of Natural And Anthropogenic Stressors On The Stress Response And Tissue-Level Response In Teleost Fish, Benjamin David Dubansky
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Analysis of integrative physiological responses is a valuable approach to studying the biological impacts of natural and anthropogenic stressors in biota. By measuring fluctuations in multiple physiological characteristics, we are able to predict the impact that exogenous stressors may have on organismal health. Laboratory studies are useful in studying the effects of a single or multiple stressor interactions in a controlled environment, although field-based studies allow for the understanding of how fish are affected in situ, where multiple natural and anthropogenic stressors exist. Using laboratory and field-based experimental design, physiological indices of fish health were measured in fish exposed to …

Heterogeneous Volumetric Data Mapping And Its Medical Applications, Huanhuan Xu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
With the advance of data acquisition techniques, massive solid geometries are being collected routinely in scientific tasks, these complex and unstructured data need to be effectively correlated for various processing and analysis. Volumetric mapping solves bijective low-distortion correspondence between/among 3D geometric data, and can serve as an important preprocessing step in many tasks in compute-aided design and analysis, industrial manufacturing, medical image analysis, to name a few. This dissertation studied two important volumetric mapping problems: the mapping of heterogeneous volumes (with nonuniform inner structures/layers) and the mapping of sequential dynamic volumes. To effectively handle heterogeneous volumes, first, we studied the …

Advancing The Field Of Polypeptoids Through The Synthesis Of Novel Architectures And Thermoresponsive Polymers, Samuel Henry Lahasky
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Peptidomimetic polymers are an emerging class of polymers that are structurally related to polypeptides. Due to their structural similarities, these polymers can be used to study some of the physical aspects of polypeptides (for example, protein folding). They are also increasingly being used in the fields of biology and drug-delivery. Some members of peptidomimetic polymers include polyacrylamides, polyoxazolines and polypeptoids. Polymer synthesis and characterization has been performed for both polyacrylamides and polyoxazolines, with research dating back to the 1950s and 1980s respectively. Research in the field of polypeptoids has not been as extensive; however, emerging synthetic strategies are allowing for …
Performing Folk Punk : Agonistic Performances Of Intersectionality, Benjamin D. Haas
Performing Folk Punk : Agonistic Performances Of Intersectionality, Benjamin D. Haas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The overarching goal of this project is to argue that folk punk performances offer spaces where a listening audience is exposed to a radical and intersectional politics, and enable that audience to identify with those views. By considering the performances of Inky Skulls, Pussy Riot!, and Against Me!, this study looks to the ways in which these folk punk exemplars highlight elements of the radical politics of the American left and in the history of folk and punk music. In particular, this project considers the intersections of race and class, women and nonhuman animals, and queerness and anarchism, as intersecting …

Sustainability calls for policies that meet current societal needs without compromising the needs of future generations; thus, a dual relationship between human and natural resources is required. The main goal of the current research was to introduce up-to-date environmental techniques for sustainable natural resource utilization in semiarid and humid ecosystems in short and long term. To achieve this goal, two studies were implemented. First, sustainable land use management was evaluated in a newly reclaimed, semiarid region in the Bustan 3 area (341.27 km2), Egypt. To achieve sustainable management in this agro-ecosystem; detection of land cover change, assessment of the most …
Concentration And Detection Of Hepatitis A Virus And Its Indicator From Seawater, Jiemin Cormier
Concentration And Detection Of Hepatitis A Virus And Its Indicator From Seawater, Jiemin Cormier
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is the leading worldwide cause of acute viral hepatitis, and its outbreaks often occur from fecal contaminated shellfish. HAV is extremely stable in the environment and can survive 3~10 months in water. In addition, HAV can be bio-concentrated by shellfish by as much as 100 fold from fecal contaminated waters. Bacteriophage MS2 is used widely as a surrogate for HAV, and its presence has been proven to be a reliable indication of the presence of HAV. A rapid detection of viral contamination in water environments can prevent economic loss and can identify the source of …
Evolutionary And Ecological Dynamics Of Rapid Radiation Of Pocket Gophers (Thomomy's) In Mexico, Verity Lynn Mathis
Evolutionary And Ecological Dynamics Of Rapid Radiation Of Pocket Gophers (Thomomy's) In Mexico, Verity Lynn Mathis
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding biodiversity is one of the driving foundations of evolutionary biology and researchers use a myriad of tools to uncover and understand the processes contributing to it. The evolutionary and ecological dynamics in a group of smooth-toothed pocket gophers, the Thomomys umbrinus species complex, is studied for this dissertation. This complex is distributed from south-central Arizona and southwestern New Mexico south to Veracruz, Mexico. The genetic complexity of T. umbrinus was initially discovered via allozymes and karyotypes, resulting in five genetic clades: three with one diploid number of chromosomes (2n = 76; two clades distributed in the Sierra Madre Occidental …
Erosional Resistance Of Cohesive Sediments In Coastal Saltmarshes, Hem Raj Pant
Erosional Resistance Of Cohesive Sediments In Coastal Saltmarshes, Hem Raj Pant
LSU Master's Theses
Louisiana’s saltmarshes, one of the most productive wetlands in the nation, are undergoing severe erosion due to hydrodynamic forces (storm surge) and sea level rise. The erosional behavior of coastal saltmarshes, which possess cohesive sediments as their integral components, are very difficult to analyze and understand. The erosional resistance of cohesive sediments determines the stability and sustainability of coastal wetlands. This erosional resistance is expressed as an erosion threshold or critical shear stress, which depends on various soil properties (e.g. water content, root content, organic matter content, and pore water salinity) affecting saltmarsh erodibility integratively. A cohesive strength meter was …

Influence Of Various Health Beneficial Spices On Some Characteristics Of Yogurt Culture Bacteria Lactobacillus Acidophilus, And Sensor Acceptability Of Spicy Probiotic Yogurt, Margie Michelle Sanchez-Vega
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
There is a pronounced public awareness about herbal remedies. Garlic and ginger have antibacterial properties and prevent cardiovascular diseases. Onion and turmeric decrease the risk of diabetes and like garlic, they have anticancer properties. Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Lactobacillus acidophilus are lactic acid bacteria that produce lactase and reduce the symptoms of malabsorption. Earlier work has shown the influence of spice extracts but the influence of pure spice juice on yogurt culture bacteria is not known. Characteristics of yogurt culture bacteria were measured by suspending freshly thawed cultures in 0.1% peptone water (growth), acidified MRS broth (acid tolerance), MRS-Thio …
Time Of Day Preferences And Resource Allocation, Alicia Marie Briganti
Time Of Day Preferences And Resource Allocation, Alicia Marie Briganti
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Previous studies have shown that circadian rhythms can have a significant impact on cognitive task performance (Bodenhausen, 1990; May, Hasher, & Stoltzfus, 1993), and that performance is better during participants’ optimal time of day for explicit memory tasks and for tasks where inhibition of responses is required. Researchers have concluded that deficits during one’s non-optimal time of day are due to inefficient inhibition (e.g., May & Hasher, 1998). However, previous studies have not sufficiently addressed possible changes in resource allocation, or the amount of resources that are allocated to the primary task versus the amount of resources used to actively …
Effects Of Amino Acids And Fatty Acids On Rice Starch Properties: Thermal, Pasting, Resistant Starch And Structural Characterization, Yu Jiang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this study, the effects of fatty acids and amino acids on rice starch were determined in aspects of pasting properties, thermal characteristic, starch digestibility and crystallinity structure. Results from viscosity analysis showed significantly low peak viscosity when rice starch was combined with 1.0% stearic acid and 6% lysine without any pH adjustment; within 0.6%-1.0% of stearic acid and 6% of lysine addition, there was a linear regression relationship between peak viscosity and the level of stearic acid. Similar pasting curves were found in rice starch with 1.0% stearic acid and 6% glutamine, or 6% cysteine, or 6% glycine in …

Mathematical And Computer-Based Models For Optimizing Microwave Heating Processes Of Frozen Oysters, Jie Zhang
Mathematical And Computer-Based Models For Optimizing Microwave Heating Processes Of Frozen Oysters, Jie Zhang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Consumers with full-time jobs prefer microwavable-frozen-meals for convenience when lack time to cook. Microwaves do not require a medium for heat transfer and provide quick heating even in low thermal conductivity foods, which does not occur in conventional heating. The main problem in utilizing microwave-heating for cooking is the non-uniform temperature distribution in foods which may result in insufficient lethality of microorganisms in some part. This non-uniformity can be due to a number of factors including composition and geometry of food. The objectives of this study were to develop a mathematical-model based on Maxwell¡¯s equations for predicting the temperature distribution …
Cyclic Block Copolypeptoids : Synthesis, Self-Assembly And Macroscopic Properties, Chang-Uk Lee
Cyclic Block Copolypeptoids : Synthesis, Self-Assembly And Macroscopic Properties, Chang-Uk Lee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents the first experimental efforts for synthesizing a new class of peptidomimetic polymers, cyclic block copolypeptoids, studying their self-assembly in dilute solution, and examining their macroscopic properties. Cyclic poly(N-methyl-glycine)-b-poly(N-decyl-glycine) (PNMG-b-PNDG) diblock copolymers were synthesized via sequential, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-mediated ring-opening polymerization of NCA monomers with controlled chain length and compositions. Cryo-TEM shows that PNMG105-b-PNDG10 copolymers in methanol (1 mg/mL) form spherical micelles that organize to form cylindrical micelles over time. The formation of cylindrical micelles is attributed to the crystallization of PNDG chains, as revealed by SAED and microDSC analyses. Cyclic PNMG100-b-PNDG10 copolymers form thermo-reversible, free-standing gels at …
The Collaged Practice : (Un)Familiar, Raina Beth Wirta
The Collaged Practice : (Un)Familiar, Raina Beth Wirta
LSU Master's Theses
My thesis exhibition is an installation of works including sculpture, video, paintings, a hand made book, sound, and drawings that emanated from a series of two-dimensional collages: self-contained forms that evoke the surreal, (un)familiar, and/or grotesque. Infused with a sort of mysterious being-hood and intended to inspire curiosity (at the least), they are unfamiliar in relation to a particular biological thing, but (mostly) recognizable in the autonomous bits and pieces. I seek to question where our physicality ends and the next form of biological life begins, and our responses to that physicality. With childlike inquisitiveness and wonder, and a healthy …
