Chapter 3 provides an insight into the history of oxyallyl cations, the basis of the second methodology development project in our laboratory. This chapter focuses on the traditional reactions that utilize these reactive intermediates, and it also showcases the concept of direct nucleophilic addition and the …

Masculinity And Social Change: Exploring Generative Masculinity Development In Resident Assistant Men Through The Social Change Model Of Leadership Development, Joshua David Finch Jan 2016

Masculinity And Social Change: Exploring Generative Masculinity Development In Resident Assistant Men Through The Social Change Model Of Leadership Development, Joshua David Finch

LSU Master's Theses

In this study, men’s identity development among Resident Assistants (RAs) at Louisiana State University is investigated using a constructivist approach. Societal expectations of men tend to value hegemonic masculinity, which reinforces a drive for dominance, objectification, and high-risk behaviors (Edwards & Jones, 2009). Whereas, generative masculinity is characterized by a sense of responsibility, desire to give back, comfort with self, willingness to confront and break gender stereotypes, and the use of personal strengths to foster wellbeing (Badaszewski, 2014). Many characteristics of generative masculinity align with the Seven C’s of Social Change as described in the Social Change Model of Leadership …

The Characterization Of Alpha- And Beta-Carbonic Anhydrases Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, Robert John Dimario Jan 2016

The Characterization Of Alpha- And Beta-Carbonic Anhydrases Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, Robert John Dimario

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are zinc-metalloenzymes that interconvert two inorganic carbon (Ci) species, CO2 and HCO3-. In Arabidopsis thaliana, there are eight Alpha-CA genes, six Beta-CA genes, three Gamma-CA genes, and two Gamma-CA-like genes. The majority of CA research in plants has focused on finding a link between CA activity and photosynthesis rates. Since the CA genes are expressed in different plant tissues and multiple CA isoforms are distributed among various organelles of the plant cell, I hypothesize that CAs facilitate CO2 diffusion among cell compartments and maintain Ci pools for carbon-requiring reactions by interconverting CO2 and HCO3-. This thesis focuses …

Immune Gene Variation And Susceptibility To Upper Respiratory Tract Disease In Gopher Tortoises, Jean Pierre Elbers Jan 2016

Immune Gene Variation And Susceptibility To Upper Respiratory Tract Disease In Gopher Tortoises, Jean Pierre Elbers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The immune system defends the host from bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. The immune system is partially under genetic control through immune response genes, such as those of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) whose nucleotide variation influences the host’s ability to recognize foreign pathogens and can influence disease susceptibility. Populations of threatened species generally possess low levels of genetic variation, and genetically depauperate hosts may be at greater risk of infectious disease contributing to extirpations because they also possess low immunogenetic variation. My dissertation examines the relationship between immunogenetic variation and disease susceptibility and the factors that influence innate immune …

Chemical Communication: The Effects Of Stress-Induced Apocrine Sweat On Human Perceptions And Interactions, Laura Caitlyn Hatcher Jan 2016

Chemical Communication: The Effects Of Stress-Induced Apocrine Sweat On Human Perceptions And Interactions, Laura Caitlyn Hatcher

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In times of stress, humans secrete a type of sweat (apocrine sweat) that they do not secrete at any other time. This sweat has been previously shown to influence others who are exposed to it. The current project seeks to explore how apocrine sweat influences the people who are exposed to it. Using the framework of Emotional Contagion Theory, two studies were conducted to assess the effects of stress-induced apocrine sweat on human perceptions and interactions. Study 1 saw participants exposed to either thermoregulatory sweat or apocrine sweat before watching a short, fear-inducing video. Participants then reported their levels of …

Private Market Alternatives For Maintaining Wetland Viability In Coastal Louisiana: A Double-Hurdle Approach, Hua Wang Jan 2016

Private Market Alternatives For Maintaining Wetland Viability In Coastal Louisiana: A Double-Hurdle Approach, Hua Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The coastal zone of Louisiana contains more than three million wetland acres, or about 40 percent of the nation’s total. Since 1930, Louisiana has experienced a net loss of over 1,900 square miles of coastal wetlands. Currently at risk are the remaining coastal wetlands, 80 percent of which are under private ownership. The acceptance of private wetland owners to restoration programs and their participation in these programs are critical if future coastal restoration efforts are to be successful. Gaining the cooperation by the coastal landowners, however, is complicated by the fact that while the public benefits accruing from wetland protection …

Molecular Simulation Studies Of Hydrophobins Near Gas, Oil And Water Interfaces, Yuwu Chen Jan 2016

Molecular Simulation Studies Of Hydrophobins Near Gas, Oil And Water Interfaces, Yuwu Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation contains fundamental, classical molecular simulation studies of the properties of hydrophobins (a unique family of surface-active proteins produced by filamentous fungi in soil) near interfaces involving gas, oil, water, organic solvents and polymers. These studies are relevant to possibly using hydrophobins as natural oil dispersants and in processing of polymers. Preliminary studies by the Russo group suggest that these small surface-active proteins can encapsulate oil, gases and polymers in cylindrical structures. We have performed classic molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and potential of mean force (PMF) calculations of a class I hydrophobin EAS using both all-atom and coarse-grained representations. …

Exploration Of Bimetallic Nickel And Cobalt Complexes For Catalytic Oxidative Cleavage Of Alkenes And Hydroformylation, Ciera Vonn Duronslet

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The “old” bimetallic nickel complexes, meso- and rac-Ni2Cl4(et,ph-P4) were investigated as possible “catalysts” for the oxidative cleavage of alkenes using an unsaturated fatty acid, oleic acid, as the substrate. The “new” bimetallic nickel complexes with a stronger chelating tetraphosphine ligand, meso- and rac-Ni2Cl4(et,ph-P4-Ph), were also synthesized and tested for the oxidative cleavage of oleic acid. All four dinickel complexes were found to be active for the oxidative cleavage of oleic acid, producing extremely small amounts of aldehyde product. The Stanley research group also discovered the oxidative cleavage of alkenes using only the “old” et,ph-P4 tetraphosphine ligands with no metal centers. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Cyclic Polypeptoids By Organo-Mediated Controlled Zwitterionic Ring-Opening Polymerization And Development Of Redox-Responsive Polypeptoid Micelles As Drug Delivery Carriers, Ang Li Jan 2016

Synthesis And Characterization Of Cyclic Polypeptoids By Organo-Mediated Controlled Zwitterionic Ring-Opening Polymerization And Development Of Redox-Responsive Polypeptoid Micelles As Drug Delivery Carriers, Ang Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Peptoids are peptidomimetic polymers, which have attracted much attention over the past two decades. They have similar building blocks to peptides, and the similarity makes the backbone of peptoids hydrophilic and biocompatible.1 Two types of peptoid polymers are under development. One is sequence-defined peptoids, which exhibit excellent bioactivities.2 Another one is polypeptoids. The good biocompatibility and highly tunable side chain substituents allow polypeptoids to be used broadly in future biomedical applications. Varying polymer architectures, including linear polymers, cyclic polymers, comb-like polymers, and dendrimers can provide distinctive properties to the polymers. Cyclic polymers employ a cyclic architecture and lack chain ends, …

Lag Time Between Parental First Concerns About Development And Entry Into Early Intervention: Impact Of Child/Family Factors, First Concerns, And Symptom Presentation, Jennifer S. Beighley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts an individual’s ability to relate to and communicate with others. Although children often do not receive a diagnosis until age 4-5 years (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014), parents typically recognize developmental problems by age 2 years (Chawarska et al., 2007), and often in the first year of life (Kishore & Basu, 2011). However, these early concerns do not always translate into appropriate or timely steps to access care. Few studies have examined factors relating to the time lag that exists between early concerns and action. Because early intervention …

Metabolic Preconditioning Of Mammalian Cells: Approaches For Increasing Biostability After Desiccation, Apurva Shrihari Borcar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Selected species in nature are able to tolerate prolonged periods of severe water stress. Survival of cellular desiccation in these anhydrobiotic organisms is conferred by a number of mechanisms including accumulation of stabilizing solutes, such as trehalose, and expression of Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins. An additional feature shared by some anhydrobiotic animals is the capacity to suppress mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in preparation for desiccation. These mechanisms improve the physiological robustness of cells to stress. The primary aim of this dissertation is to evaluate forms of metabolic preconditioning and to test the most propitious as a means to improve desiccation …

In choosing to look at the impact of white racially homogeneous work environments, if any, in relation to Black women higher education administrators, this research was grounded in Patricia Hill Collins’ Black Feminist Thought. Utilizing Black Feminist Thought, rooted in intersectionality, provided a sturdy foundation for one interested in conducting research specific to Black women, whether the discourse is race, gender, and/or any other intersecting identities. Black Feminist Thought conveys the message that Black women have similar yet different experiences from White women and similar yet different experiences from Black men, while simultaneously having shared yet different experiences than other …

An Integrated Approach To Ambrosia Beetle Management In Ornamental Tree Nurseries: Biology Of And Control Measures For Exotic Xyleborina, Christopher Werle Jan 2016

An Integrated Approach To Ambrosia Beetle Management In Ornamental Tree Nurseries: Biology Of And Control Measures For Exotic Xyleborina, Christopher Werle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ambrosia beetles have been a challenge to profitable nursery production for decades, with management recommendations focused on population monitoring and properly-timed insecticidal applications. Beetles disperse from forests starting in early spring, but few studies have determined the extent of this flight period, or how far they will fly into a nursery. And while the use of semiochemicals by ambrosia beetles has been widely examined, their use of visual cues including colors represents another gap in our knowledge. In addition to these under-studied behavioral traits, the available chemical control measures for ambrosia beetles are not completely effective, and repeated applications become …

Development Of Functional Markers For Resistance To Leaf Scald In Sugarcane, Andres Felipe Gutierrez Viveros Jan 2016

Development Of Functional Markers For Resistance To Leaf Scald In Sugarcane, Andres Felipe Gutierrez Viveros

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Leaf scald, caused by Xanthomonas albilineans, is a major sugarcane disease worldwide. The disease is managed primarily with resistant cultivars obtained through classical breeding; however, the erratic symptom expression hinders the reliability and reproducibility of the selection process. The development of molecular markers associated with incompatible/compatible reaction can overcome this limitation. Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) and quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping were the strategies used to find leaf scald resistance-associated genes and molecular markers in sugarcane. SSH results showed that genes involved in signal perception and transduction, and DNA binding, were highly expressed in the resistant clone LCP 85-384 compared …
