Soil Processes Related To Marsh Loss In Coastal Louisiana., John Andrew Nyman Jan 1993

Soil Processes Related To Marsh Loss In Coastal Louisiana., John Andrew Nyman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Marsh loss in Louisiana ($\sim$8,000 ha/yr) is attributed primarily to salt-water intrusion, flooding, and sediment starvation. Soil processes were studied to complement previous work identifying causes rather than mechanisms. Relationships between soil mineral and organic matter were examined to better understand accretion, which counters subsidence and sea-level rise. More soil volume was occupied by organic matter than mineral matter in fresh, intermediate, and brackish soil. Estimated mineral sediment requirements for accretion were 6.7 times greater in salt marsh than in fresh marsh. Sediment requirements probably increase seaward because of sulfate in seawater, reduction of sulfate to toxic sulfides in soil, …

Reconstructability Theory For General Systems And Its Application To Automated Rule Learning., Sudhir Kumar Trivedi Jan 1993

Reconstructability Theory For General Systems And Its Application To Automated Rule Learning., Sudhir Kumar Trivedi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The two problems in reconstructability analysis, abbreviated as RA, are referred to as the reconstructability problem and the identification problem. The former relates to the process of reconstructing a given system under a given criterion from the knowledge of its subsystems and, during this process, identifying those subsystems that are important in the reconstruction. The latter allows the identification of an unknown system from the knowledge of its subsystems. The advent of RA has intensified the research efforts on system studies. The objective of this research is to study the process of system reconstruction for general systems and apply it …

Dynamic Behavior Of Headspace Gases In Modified Atmosphere Packaging For Meat., Yanyun Zhao Jan 1993

Dynamic Behavior Of Headspace Gases In Modified Atmosphere Packaging For Meat., Yanyun Zhao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Headspace gas composition in food packaging undergoes dynamic changes as a result of film permeability, postmortem metabolic activity, CO$\sb2$ absorption in water and lipid, and bacteria growth and respiration. A methodology to study dynamic behavior of headspace CO$\sb2$ was developed and used to identify the significant factors influencing CO$\sb2$ behavior within modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) systems for beef. Additionally, a mathematical structure suitable for modeling microbial growth in MAP systems was presented. A combined analytical and experimental method was developed to investigate headspace CO$\sb2$ changes during isothermal storage. The ideal gas law was used as a theoretical basis, and a …

Women's Stories Of Reading And Writing: Three Literacy Life Histories., Mary Annette Duchein Jan 1993

Women's Stories Of Reading And Writing: Three Literacy Life Histories., Mary Annette Duchein

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The stories of three retired women who have shown a lifelong and continuing commitment to learning and literacy were addressed through life history methodology. Three literacy life histories were produced which were then analyzed in light of current research in the field of reading and literacy. All life phases were addressed, but emphasis was placed on the retirement years. Results confirmed prior research in the field of reading across four lifespan phases--preformal schooling, formal schooling, homemaker/workplace, and retirement--and suggested that reading and writing grew in importance during the retirement years and led to an extension or increase in mental awareness. …

A Multiple Objective Formulation And Algorithm For The Layout Design Of Food Processing Facilities., Francisco A. Escobar Jan 1993

A Multiple Objective Formulation And Algorithm For The Layout Design Of Food Processing Facilities., Francisco A. Escobar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A multiple objective formulation, which incorporates robustness and constraint enforcement as design criteria, is utilized to model the layout of food processing facilities. These facilities are subject to the compliance with guidelines dictated by public health agencies, changes in product mix, and variation in production levels due to seasonality, which render existing layout design algorithms unsuitable for their design. The solution of the robust multiple objective formulation is implemented using a construction heuristic algorithm, MORCH, and an improvement heuristics, MOLAD. The MORCH/MOLAD hybrid algorithm performs comparably to well known heuristic algorithms where materials handling cost is used as the only …

Personal Narrative: Revealing Self And Reflecting Other., Charla Lee Markham Shaw Jan 1993

Personal Narrative: Revealing Self And Reflecting Other., Charla Lee Markham Shaw

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Self-presentation is a response to internal and external demands for self-verification. The telling of personal narratives is one form of presenting self to others that begins early in life, and crosses racial, ethnic, and cultural boundaries. Not only do we present ourselves through narrative, those with whom we are socially involved present us to others through narrative. The primary purpose of this study was to examine how well one's perception of self is communicated to familiar others. Secondarily, this study explored the impact of sex differences and relationship type on the success of this communication. One hundred targets each brought …

Concept Circle Diagrams: A Metacognitive Learning Strategy To Enhance Meaningful Learning In The Elementary Science Classroom., Connie Sue Nobles Jan 1993

Concept Circle Diagrams: A Metacognitive Learning Strategy To Enhance Meaningful Learning In The Elementary Science Classroom., Connie Sue Nobles

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of concept circle diagrams, a newly developed metacognitive strategy (Wandersee, 1987), for meaningful science learning. Two research questions were: (a) Do concept circle diagrams enhance the identification and learning of science concepts more than traditional learning methods? and (b) Do concept circle diagrams evolve in quality within and across three sequences of direct explanation, guided practice, and independent practice? This study builds upon earlier research on two important metacognitive strategies, Vee diagrams (Gowin, 1981) and concept mapping (Novak & Gowin, 1984), used in science education. Participants were members of two …

Effect Of Planting Date And Other Management Inputs On Production Of Wheat., Syed Asif Hussain Shah Jan 1993

Effect Of Planting Date And Other Management Inputs On Production Of Wheat., Syed Asif Hussain Shah

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Intensive cereal management (ICM) can optimize the yield and performance of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Thell.). Planting is often delayed beyond the optimum date along the Gulf Coast due to frequent precipitation. Field experiments were conducted at four locations in 1991 and two locations in 1992 to evaluate the effects of intensive management practices on performance of wheat planted at recommended and post-recommended dates. Seeding rates of 84 or 168 kg ha$\sp{-1}$ and topdress N rates of 90 or 90 + 45 kg ha$\sp{-1}$ were evaluated for an early and a late-maturing cultivar planted at a recommended date …

Characterization Of Physiological Responses Of Suspension Cells From Alligator Weed (Alternanthera Philoxeroides (Mart.); Griseb) To An Abrupt Increase In Salinity., Gloria Balagtas-Burow Jan 1993

Characterization Of Physiological Responses Of Suspension Cells From Alligator Weed (Alternanthera Philoxeroides (Mart.); Griseb) To An Abrupt Increase In Salinity., Gloria Balagtas-Burow

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dark-grown suspension cells of alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb) were established in Murashige and Skoog medium and used to characterize several cellular responses to an abrupt increase in salinity (0 to 200 mol m$\sp{-3}$ NaCl). The fresh weight and cell density of salt-treated cells of alligator weed more than doubled by 7 d. Cell viability declined to 77% by 1 d, but recovered to 86% by 7 d after salt treatment. These responses indicate that alligator weed cells survived and adapted to an abrupt increase in salinity. Osmotic potential ($\psi\sb\pi$) of salt-treated cells declined to the $\psi\sb\pi$ of the …

Nitrogen Form, Aluminum, And Their Interaction Effects On Growth, Nitrogen Absorption And Chemical Composition Of Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.)., Jose Ramon Binns

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is frequently grown on acid soils with potentially toxic levels of aluminum (Al). Interaction effects of nitrogen (N) form and Al on growth and nutrient relationships in ryegrass require further definition for environmental, biological, and economic reasons. Nutrient solution and soil experiments were conducted in growth chambers to determine interactive effects of ammonium: nitrate (NH$\sb4$:NO$\sb3$) ratios and Al on growth, N absorption, nutrient composition, cation influx rate, and N use efficiency. In nutrient solution studies, highest dry weights of shoots were obtained when the two N forms were present in equal proportions, while highest dry …

The 28 day LC$\sb{50}$ estimates for C. sapidus, C. similis and S. haemastoma were respectively 106, 43 and 11.5 …

Spectra Of Mutations Induced By Tritium Beta Radiation Or 2-Chloroethyl Methanesulfonate In Drosophila Melanogaster Germ Cells., Nancy G. Fossett Jan 1993

Spectra Of Mutations Induced By Tritium Beta Radiation Or 2-Chloroethyl Methanesulfonate In Drosophila Melanogaster Germ Cells., Nancy G. Fossett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Tritium beta radiation (tritium) was used to induce mutations at the alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) locus in male Drosophila melanogaster post-meiotic germ cells. All 23 mutations recovered were deletions greater than one kilobase in size (multikilobase deletions) as determined by genetic complementation analysis. A statistical difference was observed between the frequency of multikilobase deletions (23/23 or 1.0) induced by tritium and the frequency of multikilobase deletions (19/27 or 0.7) induced by 100-kVp X-radiation (X-rays). The relative frequency of multikilobase deletions induced by tritium with respect to that induced by X-rays was 1.4. This value was compared to the relative biological effectiveness …

Transcription Initiation Studies With Bacillus Subtilis Promoters Containing Curved Dna., Douglas James Stemke Jan 1993

Transcription Initiation Studies With Bacillus Subtilis Promoters Containing Curved Dna., Douglas James Stemke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Many promoters contain a curved DNA component essential for high levels of transcription activity. The present work approached the study of these unusual DNA structures in a twofold manner. First, promoter binding by RNA polymerase from Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli was examined using a collection of promoters containing DNA curvature. Promoter binding by both RNA polymerases was governed primarily by the nucleotide sequence at the highly conserved $-$10 and $-$35 regions of the promoters. However, the presence of curved DNA, immediately upstream of the $-$35 region of the promoter, predictably increased binding to those promoters which contained curved DNA …

Signal Requirement For Memory Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes., Sudhirdas Kumar Prayaga Jan 1993

Signal Requirement For Memory Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes., Sudhirdas Kumar Prayaga

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Generation of an optimal immune response against a pathogen leads to protection from disease. Cytokines orchestrate a complex but well coordinated interaction between the cells of the immune system. Precise and sequential signals are required for the induction of a particular cellular function. In this study, I have analyzed the minimal signal requirement for memory cytotoxic T lymphocyte (mCTL) effector function. I have used human peripheral blood T cells as the source of influenza virus specific mCTL precursors, and influenza virus infected and formaldehyde fixed cells as antigen presenters in our assay system. Using this model, we have identified an …

A Study Of Deoxyribooligonucleotide Duplexes Containing An Unpaired Base Or Mismatched Base Pairs Using: (I) Molecular Modeling, And, (Ii) Proton Exchange Measured With Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy., Bonnie Mary Gunn-Tolson Jan 1993

A Study Of Deoxyribooligonucleotide Duplexes Containing An Unpaired Base Or Mismatched Base Pairs Using: (I) Molecular Modeling, And, (Ii) Proton Exchange Measured With Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy., Bonnie Mary Gunn-Tolson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mismatched base pairs have been implicated in mutations and arise from transitions or transversions of the base pairs during replication. An oligonucleotide duplex containing adjacent G$\cdot$A and A$\cdot$A mismatches, d(GCGAAT)$\cdot$d(ATAAGC), has been investigated using molecular mechanics and dynamics. Experimental NMR data obtained for a related molecule was used to constrain the model which suggested an unusual hydrogen-bonding for both mismatches. Between the G$\cdot$A and A$\cdot$A mismatches, defined by the unusual base pairing, there is a large twist angle. The remainder of the base pairs are B-DNA conformations. The effect of an unpaired base on the local geometry of an oligonucleotide …

Recognition And Production Of Facial Emotion By Autistic Children., Steven R. Love Jan 1993

Recognition And Production Of Facial Emotion By Autistic Children., Steven R. Love

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Autistic males ages 8 to 16 made significantly more errors than did chronologically and intellectually age-matched nonautistic normal and mentally retarded males on emotion recognition tasks using audiotaped and videotaped emotion sequences. The audiotape and videotape included "happy" "sad," "scared," "angry," and "no emotion" sequences. Emotional sequences included emotionally relevant verbal content and the length of verbalized material in the emotional sequences was limited to between 4 and 10 words. Videotaped sequences showed actors portraying facial expressions and verbal content consistent with the five emotion states. Both tapes were rated by normal adults and children as containing "socially valid" representations …

Contributions Of Monoclonal Antibodies With Anti-Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule Like Activity To Peripheral Nerve Regeneration., Laura G. Remsen Jan 1993

Contributions Of Monoclonal Antibodies With Anti-Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule Like Activity To Peripheral Nerve Regeneration., Laura G. Remsen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Tubes containing monoclonal antibodies with anti-neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM)-like activity were applied to transected sciatic nerves to attempt to perturb the recovery of muscle function. Physiological recordings were used to estimate the return of function. The decline of implanted antibody over 28 days was estimated. No significant immune responses were detected in response to the implanted material. Electron microscopic and immunohistological analyses evaluated particular cellular disruptions in nerves due to the presence of these antibodies with anti-N-CAM like activity. Histological sections of fixed experimental nerves consistently revealed abnormal gaps between Schwann cells of regenerating nerves. This specific Schwann cell …

The Role Of Flagellar Proteins In Adhesion Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, And Isolation Of The Corresponding Gene(S)., Ratchanee Hongprayoon Jan 1993

The Role Of Flagellar Proteins In Adhesion Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, And Isolation Of The Corresponding Gene(S)., Ratchanee Hongprayoon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Polar flagellar core protein was purified from Vibrio parahaemolyticus by differential centrifugation and cesium chloride isopycnic centrifugation. Twelve hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies against flagellar core protein (MAb-flc) were obtained from fusions. By chance, one purified flagellar core preparation retained flagellar sheath and as a consequence, two hybridomas were detected which secreted anti-sheath antibodies (MAb-fls). MAb-flc and MAb-fls reacted specifically with their corresponding antigens as demonstrated by immunogold labelling. Coagglutination reagents prepared with MAb-flc and MAb-fls were tested against 34 strains of V. parahaemolyticus and 34 heterologous Vibrio species. The coagglutination results revealed that the flagellar core was species-specific while the …

An Examination Of The Spontaneously Generated And Retold Narratives Produced By Gifted/Learning-Disabled Adolescents From An Integrated Perspective Of Language Development., Phebe Archon Hayes Jan 1993

An Examination Of The Spontaneously Generated And Retold Narratives Produced By Gifted/Learning-Disabled Adolescents From An Integrated Perspective Of Language Development., Phebe Archon Hayes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Few studies have examined the narrative abilities of gifted children with learning disabilities. This study investigated the ability of eighth-grade gifted children with learning disabilities (gifted/LD) to produce oral and written narratives by comparing their stories to those produced by gifted peers with no learning deficits (nonLD/gifted). It was hypothesized that evidence of difficulty generating the stories relative to the macrostructure (organization of ideas across sentences) and the microstructure (organization of ideas within sentences) would be exhibited by the gifted/LD population. Twenty, 13-year-old eighth-graders served as subjects in the present investigation. All were identified as gifted by their local school …

Predicting The Movement And Retention Of Pesticides In Soils: Physical And Chemical Nonequilibrium Modeling Approaches., Liwang Ma Jan 1993

Predicting The Movement And Retention Of Pesticides In Soils: Physical And Chemical Nonequilibrium Modeling Approaches., Liwang Ma

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Atrazine retention and transport in a highly aggregated Sharkey clay soil were investigated through kinetic batch experiments, miscible displacement (column transport), and mathematical modeling. Batch results indicated that atrazine retention was kinetic and adsorption-desorption was hysteretic. Adsorption and desorption isotherms were well described using the Freundlich equation (S = KC$\sp{\rm N}).$ Fitted Freundlich K was a function of reaction time and initial atrazine input concentrations, whereas fitted N was only affected by reaction time. Desorption hysteresis was quantified by the maximum difference between adsorption and desorption isotherms, and showed a linear increase with reaction time. Atrazine adsorption kinetics was successfully …

Mathematics And Gender: A General History Of Recent Research And Common Perceptions., Mary E. Reeves Jan 1993

Mathematics And Gender: A General History Of Recent Research And Common Perceptions., Mary E. Reeves

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the last two decades a tremendous volume of research data has been collected about differences between female and male students in mathematics. But although the amount of data collected has been large, there have been few conscious attempts to understand this data in social, economic, technological, and political terms. This history of academic research on gender differences connects the explosion of academic interest in the 1970s and 1980s with the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and the sense of technological crisis that pervades mathematics education and popular consciousness. The emergence of "Women's Lib" and interest in gender equity in …

Solid-State Nmr Studies Of Organometallic Complexes, Ae Ja Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy has been used to obtain information about electronic structure and molecular geometry for some organometallic complexes. The principal elements of the 13C chemical shielding tensor for a dimetallocyclopropane unit and three square-planar metal cyanides have been determined from a nonlinear least squares fit of the chemical shift powder pattern. For the dimetallocyclopropane unit, the orientation of the chemical shielding tensor with respect to the molecular axis has been assigned based on the dipolar coupling tensor. The principal elements of the 13P chemical shielding tensor for three binuclear platinum diphosphite complexes have been obtained from a …

Molecular Phylogenies And Biogeography Of Central American Birds., Shannon J. Hackett Jan 1992

Molecular Phylogenies And Biogeography Of Central American Birds., Shannon J. Hackett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents data on the biogeography and molecular systematics of seven independent lineages of birds; both allozyme and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) characters were used. The purpose of this study was to discover biogeographic patterns among endemic taxa distributed in the highlands and lowlands of southern Central America and sister taxa in either North or South America. Analyses of the genera Diglossa, Buarremon, Pselliophorus, and Pezopetes suggested a complex biogeographic pattern in the highlands of southern Central America; divergence of some highland lineages occurred relatively recently (during the Pleistocene), after the landbridge connection between Central and South America was completed, …

Assimilation Of Organic Contaminants In Wetlands: Processes And A Conceptual Model., John Howard Pardue Jan 1992

Assimilation Of Organic Contaminants In Wetlands: Processes And A Conceptual Model., John Howard Pardue

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Laboratory studies and field measurements were conducted to quantify assimilative capacity of toxic organic contaminants in freshwater wetlands. Studies were conducted for hexachlorobenzene and naphthalene in a mineral-dominated bottomland hardwood forest and an organic matter-dominated freshwater marsh. In laboratory studies, sorption of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in wetland soil and floodwater was strongly influenced by high levels of naturally occurring dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Organic matter-dominated wetlands (e.g., marshes) demonstrated no advantage over mineral-dominated wetlands (e.g., bottomland hardwood forests) for sorption of HCB due to partitioning in this DOC phase. Over the short-term, sorption of HCB was adequately described using a three-phase …

Effects Of Temperature On Methane Consumption In A Forest Soil And In Pure Cultures Of The Methanotroph Methylomonas Rubra, G. M. King, A. P.S. Adamsen Jan 1992

Effects Of Temperature On Methane Consumption In A Forest Soil And In Pure Cultures Of The Methanotroph Methylomonas Rubra, G. M. King, A. P.S. Adamsen

Faculty Publications

Methane oxidation in soil cores from a mixed hardwood-coniferous forest varied relatively little as a function of incubation temperatures from -1 to 30°C. The increase in oxidation rate was proportional to T2.4 (in kelvins). This relationship was consistent with limitation of methane transport through a soil gas phase to a subsurface zone of consumption by diffusion. The Q10 for CO2 production, 3.4, was substantially higher than that for methane oxidation, 1.1, and indicated that the response of soil respiration to temperature was limited by enzymatic processes and not diffusion of either organic substrates or molecular oxygen. When grown under conditions …
