The Role Of Fecal Pellets In The Flux Of Carbon To The Sea Floor On A River-Influenced Continental Shelf Subject To Hypoxia., Naureen Aziz Qureshi
The Role Of Fecal Pellets In The Flux Of Carbon To The Sea Floor On A River-Influenced Continental Shelf Subject To Hypoxia., Naureen Aziz Qureshi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Louisiana continental shelf near the Mississippi and Atchfalaya River deltas is a stratified and highly productive coastal system characterized by the largest hypoxic (dissolved oxygen $<$2 mg l$\sp{-1}$) zone in the western Atlantic Ocean. Carbon export from surface waters in the form of sedimenting zooplankton fecal pellets was examined to determine its importance in the formation and maintenance of oxygen deficiency in the bottom waters. Two sediment traps (5-6 and 15 m) were deployed in 1991 and 1992 in 20 m water depth within an area of chronic and seasonally severe hypoxia. I determined the fecal pellet number and carbon flux, and total carbon flux from the surface waters, the percent primary production exported as fecal pellets, and the potential for fluxed fecal pellet carbon to support bottom water hypoxia. I also quantitatively sampled the water column at discrete depths for fecal pellets and zooplankton to determine potential source organisms and their seasonal, diel and spatial variation. The highest densities of total organisms, copepods and copepod nauplii occurred during March and April (1992), when chlorophyll a concentrations in surface waters were highest, and decreased in summer and fall. The abundance of fecal pellets was positively correlated with total organisms, copepods and copepod nauplii, the likely source of fecal pellets. The fluxes of total particulate material, organic carbon, organic nitrogen, fecal pellet carbon and phytoplankton carbon varied similarly between seasons, and was lowest in summer and highest in spring. The fluxes were greater in 1991 than in 1992. Seasonal variations in fecal pellet number and carbon flux were positively correlated with indicators of high surface water productivity in 1991, but not in 1992. The flux of fecal pellets from surface to bottom waters accounted for 55% of the particulate material exported vertically, exceeded phytoplankton carbon fluxes, and was high enough to deplete the bottom water oxygen reserves in spring. The results support the hypothesis that the development of summer hypoxia is associated with the decomposition of organic matter accumulated in spring primarily by the sedimentation of a phytoplankton bloom via fecal pellets, and not as intact phytoplankton cells.
A Phytochemical Study Of Members Of The Genus Magnolia (Magnoliaceae) And Biosynthetic Studies Of Secondary Metabolites In Asteraceae Hairy Root Cultures., Qi Song
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Phytochemical investigations of four members of the genus Magnolia (family Magnoliaceae) were performed to provide lignans and sesquiterpene lactones. The aerial parts of the rare Louisiana native M. pyramidata afforded eight new neolignans with a novel skeleton, pyramidatin A to H. Leaves of M. virginiana provided the known sesquiterpene lactones parthenolide and costunolide as well as the new costunolactol and costunolactol dimer. An annual study of the leave constituents of M. virginiana illustrated that native M. virginiana only produces sesquiterpene lactones but transferred M. virginiana, possibly a northern variety, produces only lignans. The leaves of M. soulangiana gave five known …

Effects Of Environmental Factor Gradients On Survival, Growth And Physiology Of Two Species Of Crab Within The Genus Callinectes., John Louis Guerin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Effects of environmental factor gradients on growth, molting and physiology of crabs within the genus Callinectes were examined. Juvenile blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, were exposed to a range of dissolved cadmium concentrations at two salinities (2.5 and 25$\perthous$). 21-day LC$\sb{50}$'s were lower at 2.5$\perthous$ (19 $\mu$g l$\sp{-1}$) than at 25$\perthous$ (186 $\mu$g l$\sp{-1}).$ Crabs were exposed to Cd levels of 0, 50 and 100 $\mu$g l$\sp{-1}$ for bioenergetic measurements. Energy expenditure did not vary with cadmium. Scope for growth, energy consumption and energy absorption were unaffected by Cd at 25$\perthous,$ but decreased with exposure to cadmium at 2.5$\perthous.$. Juvenile lesser …
Nitrogen Biogeochemistry Of Aquaculture Pond Sediments., John Albert Hargreaves
Nitrogen Biogeochemistry Of Aquaculture Pond Sediments., John Albert Hargreaves
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Aquaculture pond water quality is dominated by planktonic processes, although the high surface-to-volume ratio suggests that sediment has the potential to effect important changes in water quality. The objectives of this research were to evaluate annual variation of sediment nitrogen biogeochemistry and develop a model of annual variation in ammonia concentration in a commercial channel catfish pond. In addition, the effects of physical and chemical sediment management techniques on water quality in aquatic mesocosms were evaluated. Sediment nitrogen was dominated by organic (92-96%) and adsorbed ammonium (2-4%) fractions. Porewater ammonium comprised the smallest yet most dynamic component of sediment N, …
The Effect Of Developmental Factors On The Use Of An Electronic Communication Device., Judith Danute Oxley
The Effect Of Developmental Factors On The Use Of An Electronic Communication Device., Judith Danute Oxley
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study addressed a poorly understood variable of voice output communication aid (VOCA) use, namely mnemonic development. Forty children without disabilities, aged from 49 to 60 months, were required to use an IntroTalker (Prentke Romich Company) to participate in a one-on-one storybook reading task with the investigator. They were provided with sixteen messages to use during a scripted reading of The Three Bears. Children could use a trained verbal elaboration strategy or generate their own methods to retrieve messages. Immediate and delayed responses of children under two training methods were compared, and the contribution of developmental factors, including metamemory, were …
Estimation Of Genetic Parameters For Preweaning Growth Traits Of Crossbred Cattle., Denis Jose Salgado-Fonseca
Estimation Of Genetic Parameters For Preweaning Growth Traits Of Crossbred Cattle., Denis Jose Salgado-Fonseca
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Data from a long-term rotational crossbreeding study involving Angus, Brahman, Charolais and Hereford cattle were analyzed to evaluate the importance of maternal effects on birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT) and preweaning average daily gain (ADG) and, to estimate genetic parameters. Six different animal models were fitted for each trait, ranging from a single additive to a maternal animal model allowing for both genetic and environmental maternal effects and a genetic covariance between direct and maternal additive effects. Genetic effects were obtained using a maternal animal model allowing for a maternal additive effect and a direct-maternal additive covariance (Model 4). …
The Production Of Triploid Oyster Larvae (Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin)) In Louisiana., John Eric Supan
The Production Of Triploid Oyster Larvae (Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin)) In Louisiana., John Eric Supan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Gonadal recycling of oyster broodstock, salinity effects during induction, and cytochalasin B (CB) dosage were investigated as factors affecting the production of triploid oyster larvae in Louisiana. These factors were studied at an oyster hatchery on Grand Isle, LA during 1992-1994 to help transfer triploid oyster technology to the Gulf region. Oyster broodstock were held nearshore in Caminada Bay, Louisiana and histologically analyzed between induced spawnings and during the winter of 1992-1993. Gametogenesis was analyzed qualitatively by developmental staging and quantitatively using mean gonad/body ratios (GBR) per section. The monthly percent occurrence of the developmental stages, as well as histological …
Modeling The Antecedents Of Compulsive Buying., Leslie K. Cole
Modeling The Antecedents Of Compulsive Buying., Leslie K. Cole
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Interest in dysfunctional consumption behaviors, such as compulsive buying, is a fairly recent development in the marketing literature. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop and test a theoretical model of the structural relationships among potential antecedents of compulsive buying behavior. In this dissertation, an extensive literature review identified several key constructs in the development of compulsive buying. These constructs include a family environment factor (parental influence), obsessive-compulsive trait, trait self-esteem, generalized anxiety, impulsive behavior, and anxiety reduction through shopping motivations. Seven studies were performed, including pretest and final studies with national non-student samples. Using LISREL, a structural model …
Intraspecific Variation In Salt Tolerance In Panicum Hemitomon, Spartina Patens, And Spartina Alterniflora: Population Differentiation And Investigations Of Underlying Factors., Mark Warner Hester
Intraspecific Variation In Salt Tolerance In Panicum Hemitomon, Spartina Patens, And Spartina Alterniflora: Population Differentiation And Investigations Of Underlying Factors., Mark Warner Hester
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although it is known that wetland plant species exhibit considerable interspecific variation in salt tolerance across coastal plant communities, very little is known concerning the amount of intraspecific variation in salt tolerance within plant species. Panicum hemitomon, Spartina patens and Spartina alterniflora are dominant emergent macrophytes of fresh, brackish and salt marshes, respectively. To investigate intraspecific variation in salt tolerance, plant material was collected from Gulf Coast populations of each of these species and subjected to a salinity screening protocol. All three of the plant species displayed significant intraspecific variation in lethal salinity level and plant morphology. Lethal salinity levels …
Combinatorial Design And Analysis Of Optimal Multiple Bus Systems For Parallel Algorithms., Priyalal D. Kulasinghe
Combinatorial Design And Analysis Of Optimal Multiple Bus Systems For Parallel Algorithms., Priyalal D. Kulasinghe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation develops a formal and systematic methodology for designing optimal, synchronous multiple bus systems (MBSs) realizing given (classes of) parallel algorithms. Our approach utilizes graph and group theoretic concepts to develop the necessary model and procedural tools. By partitioning the vertex set of the graphical representation CFG of the algorithm, we extract a set of interconnection functions that represents the interprocessor communication requirement of the algorithm. We prove that the optimal partitioning problem is NP-Hard. However, we show how to obtain polynomial time solutions by exploiting certain regularities present in many well-behaved parallel algorithms. The extracted set of interconnection …
Synthesis Of Benz(F)Tryptophan And Constrained Amino Acid Derivatives As Fluorescence Probes., Guillermo Morales
Synthesis Of Benz(F)Tryptophan And Constrained Amino Acid Derivatives As Fluorescence Probes., Guillermo Morales
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Constrained amino acids and benzannulated analogs of indole were synthesized as potential fluorescence probes of peptide structure. 1-Amino-2-(3-indolyl)-cyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid (W3) is a rotationally-restricted tryptophan analog whose C$\sb\alpha$-C$\sb\beta$ bond is part of a 6-membered ring. Friedel-Crafts reaction between $\alpha$-hydroxycyclohexanone and indole affords 2-(3-indolyl)cyclohexanone which is further converted into its corresponding spirohydantoin derivative via Strecker reaction. Basic hydrolysis of this hydantoin derivative with Ba(OH)$\sb2$ in oxygen-free water at 250$\sp\circ$C in a Parr$\sp\circler$ high pressure bomb afforded the constrained tryptophan analog. N-(t-Boc)piperidine-4-amino-4-carboxylic acid is a constrained Aib analog. Treatment of 4-piperidinone monohydrate hydrochloide with triethyl amine, catalytic amounts of N,N-dimethylamino pyridine and di-tert-butyl …
The Molecular And Morphological Systematics Of Subfamily Epidendroideae (Orchidaceae)., Malcolm Ray Neyland
The Molecular And Morphological Systematics Of Subfamily Epidendroideae (Orchidaceae)., Malcolm Ray Neyland
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The current project undertakes the first molecular-based phylogenetic study of subfamily Epidendroideae (Orchidaceae). Approximately 1,200 nucleotide bases (from the 3$\sp\prime$ half of the ndhF chloroplast gene) for 34 orchid taxa, and a lilioid monocot, Clivia miniata, (Amaryllidaceae) were subjected to phylogenetic analysis using parsimony methods. Oryza sativa (Poaceae), a nonlilioid monocot was designated as outgroup. Using unweighted ndhF sequences, the strict consensus cladogram of 531 most-parsimonious trees supports the hypothesis that the large subfamily Epidendroideae is monophyletic, with Listera (Neottieae) as sister. Although subtribal-level relationships in subfamily Epidendroideae ate well resolved in this analysis, tribal-level relationships are resolved poorly. A …
Changes Of Amylases And Carbohydrates In Sweetpotatoes During Storage And Their Effects On Viscosity Of Sweetpotato Puree., Xiangyong Liu
Changes Of Amylases And Carbohydrates In Sweetpotatoes During Storage And Their Effects On Viscosity Of Sweetpotato Puree., Xiangyong Liu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A critical problem associated with the production of sweetpotato puree is the inconsistency of final product. Two possible factors, amylase activity and carbohydrate content in sweetpotatoes during storage, were investigated. It was found that $\alpha$- and $\beta$-amylase activities do not significantly change during storage, and have no significant effects on viscosity of sweetpotato puree. The inconsistent products in sweetpotato puree processing are mostly due to the change of alcohol insoluble solids (AIS) in sweetpotatoes during storage. The decrease of AIS is partially due to respiration that converts starch into CO$\sb2$ and H$\sb2$O. A new bio-processing method was proposed to improve …

The Effects Of Departures From Prior Return Measures On Individual Taxpayer Frame And Tax Reporting Decisions., Phyllis V. Copeland
The Effects Of Departures From Prior Return Measures On Individual Taxpayer Frame And Tax Reporting Decisions., Phyllis V. Copeland
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The individual tax compliance gap persists despite costly enforcement efforts that attempt to dissuade noncompliance by identifying noncompliant taxpayers and imposing sanctions on those identified. Enforcement strategies that reduce the psychological incentives of noncompliance may complement the dissuasive approach. The present study probes this psychological alternative by examining several factors that are potential determinants of how taxpayers perceive their tax return results, and accordingly, how much reporting risk they are willing to assume. Noncompliance is modelled as a two-tier process. The first relies on adaptation level theory that suggests taxpayers frame the filing of their current year tax returns with …

Myoglobin And Lipid Stability Of Meat And Liposome Model Systems With Modified Atmosphere Packaging., Nai-Yun Huang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The influences of lipid peroxidation and pigment autoxidation in beef and liposome model systems were examined in modified atmosphere packaging containing oxygen (O$\sb2).$ Ground beef of 75 and 90% lean were packaged in 80% nitrogen (N$\sb2){:}20\%$ carbon dioxide (C$\sb2)$ for distribution and storage atmospheres were exchanged for 80% $\rm O\sb2{:}20\%\ CO\sb2$ at 15, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27 or 29 days postpackaging before retail display. On the same postpackaging day, samples from longer gas exchange, but shorter display times had lower lipid oxidation, psychrotrophic growth, metmyoglobin formation, discoloration and odor scores when compared with samples from shorter gas exchange times …
A Comparison Of Ecological Factors Affecting Two Species Of Lotic Molluscs., Paul David Johnson
A Comparison Of Ecological Factors Affecting Two Species Of Lotic Molluscs., Paul David Johnson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined habitat-mediated differences in the population structure of two species of stream molluscs, the Louisiana pearl-shell mussel, Margaritifera hembeli, a protected species, and Elimia semicarinata, a pleurocerid gastropod. In 1991 I located Margaritifera hembeli in a drainage system where it was previously unknown, and describe here the distribution of M. hembeli in the Bayou Rigolette drainage in Grant Parish, Louisiana. The mussel was limited to small second- and third-order lotic systems. Of several physicochemical and habitat parameters, specific conductance, Ca$\sp{+2}$ concentration, sediment particle size, sediment compaction and channel width were most important in explaining abundance. Substratum stability was …

Alu elements are a family of interspersed repeats that have mobilized throughout primate genomes by retroposition from a few 'master' genes. Among the 500,000 Alu elements in the human genome are members of the human- specific subfamily that are not fixed in the human species; that is, not all chromosomes carry an Alu element at a particular locus. Four such polymorphic human-specific Alu insertions were analyzed by a rapid, PCR-based assay that uses primers that flank the insertion point to determine genotypes based on the presence or absence of the Alu element. These four polymorphic Alu insertions were shown to …

A Preliminary Mass Balance Model Of Primary Productivity And Dissolved Oxygen In The Mississippi River Plume/Inner Gulf Shelf Region, Victor J. Bierman Jr., Scott C. Hinz, William J. Wiseman Jr., Nancy N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
A deterministic, mass balance model for phytoplankton, nutrients, and dissolved oxygen was applied to the Mississippi River Plume/Inner Gulf Shelf (MRP/IGS) region. The model was calibrated to a comprehensive set of field data collected during July 1990 at over 200 sampling stations in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The spatial domain of the model is represented by a three-dimensional, 21-segment water-column .grid extending from the Mississippi River Delta west to the Louisiana-Texas border, and from the shoreline seaward to the 30-60 m bathymetric contours. Diagnostic analyses and numerical experiments were conducted with the calibrated model to better understand the environmental …

Oxygen depletion is a seasonally dominant feature of the lower water column on the highly-stratified, riverine-influenced continental shelf of Louisiana. The areal extent of hypoxia (bottom waters ≤2 mg l−1 dissolved oxygen) in mid-summer may encompass up to 9,500 km2, from the Mississippi River delta to the upper Texas coast, with the spatial configuration of the zone varying interannually. We placed two continuously recording oxygen meters (Endeco 1184) within 1 m of the seabed in 20-m water depth at two locations 77 km apart where we previously documented midsummer bottom water hypoxia. The oxygen meters recorded considerably different oxygen conditions …

Ecological Impacts Of Historic And Prehistoric Hurricanes On Horn Island, Mississippi, Kari Gathen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Hurricanes play an important role in the ecology and geomorphology of the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. In order to study the impact of hurricanes on barrier island vegetation, the sedimentary and fossil pollen records taken from cores in three ponds on Horn Island, Mississippi were examined to establish a record of ecological and geomorphological disturbance on Horn Island. Surface samples taken from the bottom of 15 ponds and 3 lagoons, delineated as fresh or brackish according to salinity test results, provide the modern vegetational analog to compare with the fossil pollen record using a discriminant analysis. Discriminant analysis results …

Habitat Use, Movement, And Production Ecology Of The Crayfish Procambarus Vioscai, Christopher David Barcza
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I conducted three studies during the year of 1993 in order to investigate the ecology of the crayfish Procambarus vioscai in the streams of the Kisatchie National Forest. The first study was designed to determine the factors that effect the microdistribution of this crayfish. A direct and positive relationship between the variation in leaf accumulation and crayfish biomass in a location was observed in the study streams. Laboratory observations of the behavior of the crayfish associated with leaf litter and a regression model for structure volume versus crayfish biomass indicated that exploitation of leaf accumulations by P. vioscai is a …

The nucleotide sequence of the S gene of the bovine respiratory coronavirus (BRCV) strain G95, which was isolated from nasal swabs of a calf suffering from respiratory disorders, was determined and compared with the S gene of the enteropathogenic bovine coronavirus (BECV) strain LY138. Sequence analysis revealed 98.7% nucleotide and 98.3% deduced amino acid identities between the S genes of BRCV-G95 and BECV-LY138 without any deletions or insertions. Nucleotide substitutions were distributed randomly throughout the gene. Five monoclonal antibodies specific for the S protein distinguished BRCV-G95 from BECV-L9, but failed to differentiate it from BECV-LY138 in Western blots under denatured …

Comparing the translational capacities of cell-free systems from aerobically developing embryos of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana vs. quiescent embryos has revealed a global arrest of protein synthesis. Incorporation rates of [3H]leucine by lysates from 4-h anoxic embryos were 8% of those from aerobic (control) embryos, when assayed at the respective pH values measured for each treatment in vivo. Exposure of embryos to 4 h of aerobic acidosis (elevated CO2 in the presence of oxygen) suppressed protein synthesis to 3% of control values. These latter two experimental treatments promote developmental arrest of Artemia embryos and, concomitantly, cause acute declines in …

ID elements are short interspersed repetitive DNA elements (SINEs) which have amplified in rodent genomes via retroposition, a process involving an RNA intermediate. BC1, an abundant ID-related transcript, is transcribed from a conserved, single-copy gene in rodents. The gene encoding BC1 RNA represents one of the earliest and possibly the first ID-containing sequence. Comparison of consensus sequences of each rodent ID with its corresponding BC1 RNA gene showed that the variations of BC1 RNA within rodents corresponded to specific changes within the ID consensus sequence for each rodent species. This supports the hypothesis that the BC1 gene is a master …
