An Ecopath/Ecosim Analysis Of An Estuarine Food Web: Seasonal Energy Flow And Response To River-Flow Related Perturbations, Laura Lynette Althauser Jan 2003

An Ecopath/Ecosim Analysis Of An Estuarine Food Web: Seasonal Energy Flow And Response To River-Flow Related Perturbations, Laura Lynette Althauser

LSU Master's Theses

Estuaries are often the receiving basins for major river systems which makes them vulnerable to anthropogenic influences. I used Ecopath and Ecosim to investigate the structure of the Weeks Bay, Alabama, USA food web, and the responses of the food web to bottom-up perturbations. Four season-specific steady-state Ecopath models were developed and used to compare the production, biomass, consumption, biomass flows, and higher order indices of ecosystem functioning of the Weeks Bay food web under winter, spring, summer, and fall conditions. The season-specific Ecopath snapshots indicated that the structure of the Weeks Bay food web was resilient. Winter had the …

Solid-Phase Dna Sequencing Reactions Performed In Micro-Capillary Reactors And Solid-Phase Reversible Immobilization In Microfluidic Chips For Purification Of Dye-Labeled Dna Sequencing Fragments, Yichuan Xu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The research presented in this dissertation involves micro-capillary reactors for solid phase DNA sequencing, the identification of dye terminator sequencing fragments with time-resolved methods, and purification of dye-labeled DNA fragments using solid- phase reversible immobilization in microfluidic chips. Solid-phase micro-reactors have been prepared for DNA sequencing applications using slab gel electrophoresis. A PCR product was immobilized to the interior wall of a fused-silica capillary tube via a biotin-streptavidin linkage. Solid-phase sequencing was carried out in micro-capillary reactors using a four-lane, single color dye primer chemistry strategy. The read length was found to be 589 bases. The complementary DNA fragments generated …

The Effect On Water Quality Of Riverine Input Into Coastal Wetlands, Robert Raymond Lane Jan 2003

The Effect On Water Quality Of Riverine Input Into Coastal Wetlands, Robert Raymond Lane

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on impact on water quality of two freshwater diversions, the Bonnet Carre Spillway and the Caernarvon freshwater diversion, as well as the Atchafalaya River Estuarine Complex. As water passed through the Bonnet Carre Spillway, there were reductions in total suspended sediment concentrations of 82-83%, in nitrite+nitrate of 28-42%, in total nitrogen (TN) of 26-30%, and in total phosphorus (TP) of 50-59%. The Si:N ratio generally increased and the N:P ratio decreased from the river to the plume edge in Lake Pontchartrain. At the Caernarvon diversion, there were reductions in concentrations of dissolved inorganic Si, N, and P …

Conservation Versus Survival: A Cultural Ecological Study Of Changing Settlement Patterns, Cultures, And Land Use In The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve Of Northeast Honduras, Elizabeth Ann Fraser Jan 2003

Conservation Versus Survival: A Cultural Ecological Study Of Changing Settlement Patterns, Cultures, And Land Use In The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve Of Northeast Honduras, Elizabeth Ann Fraser

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Conserving ecologically valuable areas is proclaimed a priority by governments, institutions, and citizens throughout the world. Preventing the erosion of the remaining indigenous cultures also receives widespread support. In response to these desires, numerous protected areas now exist; spaces that theoretically should attain both ecological and cultural preservation. However, many of these areas are found within a larger setting plagued by ongoing struggles to meet basic needs. Often these larger problems create a challenge to, if not work in opposition to, the original aims of protected areas. This study of nine communities looks at these and related issues in the …

Effects Of Submergence And Hypoxia On The Growth And Anatomy Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Seedlings, Denise M. D'Abundo Jan 2003

Effects Of Submergence And Hypoxia On The Growth And Anatomy Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Seedlings, Denise M. D'Abundo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Aerenchyma - a specialized tissue with abundant, interconnected gas spaces - facilitates oxygen transport from shoots to roots in many emergent wetland plants. The importance of oxygen transport to root elongation and aerenchyma development in rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings was demonstrated in this investigation. Germinated seeds of Lemont (a commercial cultivar) and red rice (an agricultural weed) were positioned at 4.5, 2.5, or 1.0 cm below the surface of aerated or hypoxic water to control the duration of leaf submergence and the availability of oxygen. Primary root and leaf lengths were measured daily. Aerenchyma was compared among emergent and …

Solute Transport In A Porous Medium: A Mass-Conserving Solution For The Convection-Dispersion Equation In A Finite Domain, William Golz Jan 2003

Solute Transport In A Porous Medium: A Mass-Conserving Solution For The Convection-Dispersion Equation In A Finite Domain, William Golz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation considers the proper mathematical description for the physical problem of a miscible solute undergoing longitudinal convective-dispersive transport with constant production, first-order decay, and equilibrium sorption in a porous medium. Initial and input concentrations may be any continuously differentiable functions and the mathematical system is articulated for a finite domain. This domain yields a mass balance which requires Robin (i.e., third-type) boundaries, which describe a continuous flux but a discontinuous resident-concentration. The discontinuity in the resident concentration at the outflow boundary yields an underdetermined system when the exit concentration is not experimentally measured. This is resolved by defining the …

The Invasive Tropical Shrub Clidemia Hirta (Melastomataceae) In Its Native And Introduced Ranges: Tests Of Hypotheses Of Invasion, Saara Jennie Dewalt Jan 2003

The Invasive Tropical Shrub Clidemia Hirta (Melastomataceae) In Its Native And Introduced Ranges: Tests Of Hypotheses Of Invasion, Saara Jennie Dewalt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Exotic pest plants often grow to greater stature, become more abundant, and display increased shade tolerance in their introduced ranges than in their native ranges. These differences have been hypothesized to result from genetic shifts in biomass allocation, growth, or photosynthesis between genotypes in native and introduced ranges or from plastic, phenotypic responses to different environmental conditions, such as lower herbivore or fungal pest loads in areas of introduction. I used the tropical shrub Clidemia hirta (Melastomataceae) as a model exotic pest plant to test these two non-mutually exclusive hypotheses of invasion. Clidemia hirta invades forest understory and is more …

Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping For Agronomic And Fiber Quality Traits In Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Using Molecular Markers, Muhanad Walid Akash

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The breeding of Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivars that combine high yield and fiber quality is a major challenge to the breeder. The understanding of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) contributing to agronomic and fiber quality traits offers an excellent route to solve this problem. A QTL analysis was carried out after an F2:3 population composed of 138 lines, derived from the intraspecific cross between Paymaster 54 and PeeDee 2165, was developed and a linkage map including 143 AFLP markers was constructed. The F2:3 population was grown in two locations, Alexandria and Baton Rouge in LA. The …

Granulometry, Chemistry And Physical Interactions Of Non-Colloidal Particulate Matter Transported By Urban Storm Water, Hong Lin Jan 2003

Granulometry, Chemistry And Physical Interactions Of Non-Colloidal Particulate Matter Transported By Urban Storm Water, Hong Lin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Urban rainfall-runoff is a major source of anthropogenic pollutions to the natural water bodies. Particulate matter generated from anthropogenic environments and activities is a constituent of environmental concern as well as a carrier substrate for reactive contaminants such as metals. Partitioning, transport and transformation of particulate-bound contaminants are determined by the granulometry, physical and geochemical properties of the particulate carriers. Previous research emphasized in the transport of colloidal and suspended particles in rainfall-runoff. The settleable and sediment material were ignored though they are a major granulometric fraction which may contain most of the sorbed or transported constituents such as metals, …

Design, Synthesis, And Applications Of Bio-Derived Crosslinking Monomers For Molecular Imprinting, Martha Sibrian-Vazquez Jan 2003

Design, Synthesis, And Applications Of Bio-Derived Crosslinking Monomers For Molecular Imprinting, Martha Sibrian-Vazquez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Most of the research in the field of molecular imprinting has been focused on the development of new functional monomers, in order to improve the molecular recognition properties afforded by these materials. The role of the crosslinking monomer has often been overlooked, since it is considered an inert component that only provides a scaffold to support the binding sites. However, the crosslinking monomer represents a high percent (80-90%) of the composition of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), which can have a large influence on the MIPs properties. This research addresses the design, synthesis, and applications of new crosslinking monomers for molecular …

Perspectives On Comparative Literature, Alexandru Boldor Jan 2003

Perspectives On Comparative Literature, Alexandru Boldor

LSU Master's Theses

The main objective of this dissertation was to provide researchers interested in the history and evolution of "comparative literature" with a collection of references delineating the evolution of the concept and the development of academic departments dedicated to its study. The paper includes a first section describing the main issues contributing to the "identity crisis" with which studies and departments defining themselves as "comparative" were consistently confronted ever since the term was coined. The "preliminary concepts" section offers an overview of the elements that usually confer a "comparative" quality to a literary study, such as interdisciplinarity and multiculturalism, together with …

Physicochemical Effects On The Abundance And Distribution Of Larval Fishes In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Matthew Aaron Engel Jan 2003

Physicochemical Effects On The Abundance And Distribution Of Larval Fishes In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Matthew Aaron Engel

LSU Master's Theses

The Atchafalaya River Basin (ARB) experiences overbank inundations as springtime temperatures warm that create conditions favorable for bacterial respiration, which results in hypoxic conditions (dissolved oxygen [DO] ≤ 2.0 mg/L). Previous ARB research has shown that pelagic larval fish populations are impacted by hypoxic conditions, and that larvae may use macrophyte beds (e.g., hydrilla Hydrilla verticillata) as DO refugia. I examined the relationship between physicochemistry and the distribution and abundance or larval fishes associated with ARB macrophyte beds during 2001-2002. Larval fishes were collected with light traps at two normoxic and hypoxic sites, and at each site, surface and subsurface …

Characterizing Spatially Explicit Patterns Of Antibiotic Resistance In The Marine Environment Using Top-Level Marine Predators, Jason Kenna Blackburn

LSU Master's Theses

This research is the first known study to characterize spatially explicit patterns of Antibiotic Resistance (ABR) in top-level marine predators. A total of 134 viable bacteria samples were isolated from cloacal swabs of seven shark species and one teleost species and then stratified by geographic location. Samples were collected using sterile rayon-tipped culturettes and transported to the LSU-SVM for classification and antibiotic resistance analyses using the Kirby-Bauer method. Samples were characterized by Gram-stain and morphology and placed into three groups: 1) Gram-negative rods, 2) Gram-positive cocci, or 3) Gram-positive rods. Prevalence rates were calculated for each study site as the …

Studio Design Critique: Student And Faculty Expectations And Reality, Elizabeth Marie Graham Jan 2003

Studio Design Critique: Student And Faculty Expectations And Reality, Elizabeth Marie Graham

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis explores the use of criticism in the landscape architectural design studio. Criticism is a very useful tool in the communication of ideas and the evaluation of designs, yet its application in design studios has not reached its full potential in the discipline of landscape architecture. To develop an understanding of criticism as a pedagogical tool in the design studio, along with faculty and students expectations of criticism, this thesis uses a two-step approach. The first step explores the intentions of critique used by design instructors during desk crits and juries. The second step explores the students’ perceptions of …

The objectives of this study were the description of changes in genetic diversity in a colony of dog guides since its founding, and the investigation of the genetics of longevity in that population. Two breeds of dog, German Shepherds (GS) and Labrador Retrievers (LR), were evaluated. There were rapid increases in average pairwise relationship in both breeds, although the average was approximately one-third higher in the GS population than in the LR population. A similar trend was observed for average inbreeding. In the current generation, relationship and inbreeding for all animals averaged 25.3% and 26.2% in GS and 15.5% and …

Application Of Mechanistic Models In Predicting Flow Behavior In Deviated Wells Under Ubd Conditions, Faisal Abdullah Aladwani Jan 2003

Application Of Mechanistic Models In Predicting Flow Behavior In Deviated Wells Under Ubd Conditions, Faisal Abdullah Aladwani

LSU Master's Theses

Underbalanced drilling (UBD) has increased in recent years because of the many advantages associated with it. These include increase in the rate of penetration and reduction of lost circulation and formation damage. Drilling of deviated and horizontal wells also increased since recovery can be improved from a horizontal or a deviated well. The drilling of deviated wells using UBD method will reduce several drilling related problems such as hole cleaning and formation damage. Prediction of flow and pressure profiles while drilling underbalanced in such wells will help in designing and planning of the well. The main aim of this research …

Transmission Of Electromagnetic Power Through A Biological Medium, Ripan Das Jan 2003

Transmission Of Electromagnetic Power Through A Biological Medium, Ripan Das

LSU Master's Theses

Primary goal of this work is to study transmission of EM power through a multilayered biological medium. For a particular case study, EM power transmission from an external transmitter to a coupled receiver implanted inside a biological medium simulating a human body is studied to find solutions for factors such as optimum transmission frequency and excitation current. Different aspects of interaction of EM waves with biological bodies and tissues are discussed. Two major factors that may affect transmission of EM power through a biological body are absorption and reflection of EM waves. A simulation in which exact Maxwell's equations are …

Modeling A Mississippi River Diversion Into A Louisiana Wetland, Stephan Alexander Capps Jan 2003

Modeling A Mississippi River Diversion Into A Louisiana Wetland, Stephan Alexander Capps

LSU Master's Theses

Wetland loss has significant impacts. Numerous loss mechanisms have been hypothesized, and a greater number of solutions have been proposed. One proposed solution is to divert river water into a degraded area with the intent of increasing sedimentation, introducing nutrients, and/or decreasing salinity within the wetland. However, wetland hydraulics and hydrology are complex processes and any hydrologic modification may result in unintended consequences. Predicting these consequences can be problematic due to the complexity and difficulty associated with proper modeling of the hydraulics and topography. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the suitability of established one- and two-dimensional …

Macroinvertebrate Abundance And Distribution Of Hydrilla And Ceratophyllum Habitats In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Jose Checo Colon-Gaud Jan 2003

Macroinvertebrate Abundance And Distribution Of Hydrilla And Ceratophyllum Habitats In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Jose Checo Colon-Gaud

LSU Master's Theses

Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) plays an important role in aquatic systems, providing shelter, breeding habitat, and epiphytic forage for numerous fishes and aquatic macroinvertebrates. Since 1960, many lentic habitats in the southern U.S. have been invaded by Hydrilla verticillata, and in the last two decades this aggressive macrophyte has become the dominant species of SAV in the Atchafalaya River Basin in south central Louisiana. Because of its highly branched morphology and characteristically high densities, I found it difficult to quantitatively sample the macrofauna inhabiting hydrilla stands with traditional gears such as sweep nets, particularly under the canopy. As a consequence, …

Scalable Parallel Molecular Dynamics Algorithms For Organic Systems, Satyavani Vemparala Jan 2003

Scalable Parallel Molecular Dynamics Algorithms For Organic Systems, Satyavani Vemparala

LSU Master's Theses

A scalable parallel algorithm, Macro-Molecular Dynamics (MMD), has been developed for large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of organic macromolecules, based on space-time multi-resolution techniques and dynamic management of distributed lists. The algorithm also includes the calculation of long range forces using Fast Multipole Method (FMM). FMM is based on the octree data structure, in which each parent cell is divided into 8 child cells and this division continues until the cell size is equal to the non-bonded interaction cutoff length. Due to constant number of operations performed at each stage of the octree, the FMM algorithm scales as O(N). Design and …

Psychosocial Predictors Of Dietary Fat Reduction: The Role Of Stress And The Transtheroetical Model In A Dietary Intervention, Jennifer L. Francis Jan 2003

Psychosocial Predictors Of Dietary Fat Reduction: The Role Of Stress And The Transtheroetical Model In A Dietary Intervention, Jennifer L. Francis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dietary fat is related to cardiovascular disease and numerous intensive, controlled clinical trials have successfully reduced dietary fat in symptomatic populations. However, there has been less success in large, community-based studies with healthy or mildly at-risk populations. Little is known about predictors associated with actual change in dietary fat intake and this is an important omission because dietary interventions are more likely to be successful if they are based on factors known to influence behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychosocial predictors of dietary fat and dietary fat reduction through the framework of the transtheoretical model …

High Carbon Dioxide Requiring Mutants Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtti, Steve Vincent Pollock

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a photosynthetic alga that has the ability to concentrate CO2 around Rubisco to achieve enhanced rates of photosynthesis in a low CO2 environment. This dissertation presents results obtained from the generation and analysis of four high CO2 requiring mutants of C. reinhardtii. The use of reverse genetics is a very powerful tool to dissect out the individual components of metabolic pathways. Two reverse genetics methods were utilized in this study: a random insertional mutagenesis method to discover genes that are required for growth in a low CO2 environment, and a directed mutagenesis approach, RNA interference, to determine …

Evolution Of Ecological Diversity In The Neotropical Tanagers Of The Genus Tangara (Aves: Thraupidae), Kazuya Naoki

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The origin and maintenance of biological diversity has been one of the fundamental issues in biology. However, the evolution of ecological traits that affect species coexistence and species diversity is poorly known. My research aimed to investigate the evolution of species-specific ecological and morphological traits and to understand the process of ecological diversification and species coexistence in Tangara tanagers (Thraupidae) by using phylogenetic comparative methods. Tangara is the largest avian genus in the New World with 50 recognized species. As many as ten species of Tangara are found sympatrically in the same Andean cloud forest, and many syntopic species travel …

Subversive Bodies: Embodiment As Discursive Strategy In Women's Popular Literature Of The Long Eighteenth Century, Phyllis Ann Thompson Jan 2003

Subversive Bodies: Embodiment As Discursive Strategy In Women's Popular Literature Of The Long Eighteenth Century, Phyllis Ann Thompson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

“Subversive Bodies: Embodiment as Discursive Strategy in Women’s Popular Literature of the Long Eighteenth Century” examines literary representations of the body as strategies of resistance. This study demonstrates that Manley's Secret Memoirs from the New Atalantis, Haywood's Female Spectator, and Burney's Journal and Letters, as well as unpublished receipt books for medicinal and cosmetic preparations, challenge the prevailing masculinist notion of a passive, distinct topography of womanhood and lay the groundwork for a feminist tradition of recognizing the body as an explicit part of experience. Tracing the origins of today's critical perspectives, my study draws on the insights of recent …
