Whole and fresh-cut produce are minimally processed and susceptible to microbial contamination. This study evaluated the survival or growth of L. monocytogenes on peeled rinds, and fresh-cut produce at different storage temperatures. Fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, including cantaloupe, watermelon, pear, papaya, pineapple, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, bell pepper, and kale (25 g pieces) were spot inoculated with 4 log CFU/g of L. monocytogenes and stored at 4 or 13°C for 6 days. Cantaloupe and bell pepper rind disks (20 cm2), mimicking whole produce were inoculated with low inoculum level (4 log CFU/mL) and high inoculum level (6 log CFU/mL) and stored …

Challenges In The Combination Of Radiotherapy And Immunotherapy For Breast Cancer, Rui Zhang, Samantha D. Clark, Beibei Guo, Tianyi Zhang, Duane Jeansonne, Samithamby J. Jeyaseelan, Joseph Francis, Weishan Huang

Faculty Publications

Introduction: Immunotherapy (IT) is showing promise in the treatment of breast cancer, but IT alone only benefits a minority of patients. Radiotherapy (RT) is usually included in the standard of care for breast cancer patients and is traditionally considered as a local form of treatment. The emerging knowledge of RT-induced systemic immune response, and the observation that the rare abscopal effect of RT on distant cancer metastases can be augmented by IT, have increased the enthusiasm for combinatorial immunoradiotherapy (IRT) for breast cancer patients. However, IRT largely follows the traditional sole RT and IT protocols and does not consider patient …

Aspergillus flavus is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that infects maize and produces aflatoxins. Using biocontrol or developing resistant cultivars to reduce aflatoxin contamination has only achieved limited success. Here, the A. flavus polygalacturonase gene (p2c) was targeted for suppression through host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) to reduce aflatoxin contamination in maize. An RNAi vector carrying a portion of the p2c gene was constructed and transformed into maize B104. Thirteen out of fifteen independent transformation events were confirmed to contain p2c. The T2 generation kernels containing the p2c transgene had less aflatoxin than those without the transgene in six out of eleven …

Introduction: The primary metabolism of plants, which is mediated by nitrogen, is closely related to the defense response to insect herbivores. Methods: An experimental system was established to examine how nitrogen mediated tomato resistance to an insect herbivore, the oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis). All tomatoes were randomly assigned to the suitable nitrogen (control, CK) treatment, nitrogen excess (NE) treatment and nitrogen deficiency (ND) treatment. Results: We found that nitrogen excess significantly increased the aboveground biomass of tomato and increased the pupal biomass of B. dorsalis. Metabolome analysis showed that nitrogen excess promoted the biosynthesis of amino acids in healthy …

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (JE Smith, 1797), is a serious pest of several crops, particularly maize and other cereals. It has long been known as a pest in the Americas and has invaded most of Africa and parts of the Middle East, Asia, and Australia in the last six years. Its new status as an invasive species causing serious damage in many regions worldwide has highlighted the need for better understanding and has generated much research. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of FAW covering its (i) taxonomy, biology, ecology, genomics, and microbiome, (ii) worldwide status …

America's Hardscrabble General: Ulysses S. Grant, From Farm Boy To Shiloh, Richard G. Mannion Jan 2023

America's Hardscrabble General: Ulysses S. Grant, From Farm Boy To Shiloh, Richard G. Mannion

Civil War Book Review

"Throughout much of his adult life, disappointment and hardship were Grant’s constant companions. Yet rather than let these circumstances defeat him, Grant endured these hardships, learned valuable life lessons from them and, combined with his formative background, used these lessons to his advantage to become the greatest and most successful battle commander in American military history. So argues Jack Hurst in his compelling and highly engaging America’s Hardscrabble General, Ulysses S. Grant: From Farm Boy to Shiloh."

Knowing Him By Heart: African Americans On Abraham Lincoln, Lucas E. Morel Jan 2023

Knowing Him By Heart: African Americans On Abraham Lincoln, Lucas E. Morel

Civil War Book Review

Black American’s attitudes toward the Great Emancipator is the focus of Knowing Him by Heart: African Americans on Abraham Lincoln (University of Illinois Press), edited by Fred Lee Hord and Matthew D. Norman. The essays show that African Americans’ attitudes toward Lincoln “plumb deeper than his reputation as the Great Emancipator,” writes Morel. Indeed, African Americans; attitudes toward Lincoln from his presidency to the recent past evince a “’persistent ambivalence,’” write Hord and Norman in their introduction. Morel believes that “the value of a book about Black American opinions of Lincoln resides not only in the neglected history it tells, …

Leaves Of Grass, Meg Groeling Jan 2023

Leaves Of Grass, Meg Groeling

Civil War Book Review

"Walt Whitman hoped his small, green, unassuming chapbook Leaves of Grass would set the poetic and literary world on fire, but there was, initially, nothing but a spark and then a fizzle. Reviews suggested that Whitman be sent to an insane asylum and that the book itself was “intensely vulgar, nay, absolutely beastly.” Even in 2023, there are divergent opinions concerning the literary worth of Whitman’s masterpiece. But how was it received in 1855?"

To Walk About In Freedom: The Long Emancipation Of Priscilla Joyner, Diane Miller Sommerville Jan 2023

To Walk About In Freedom: The Long Emancipation Of Priscilla Joyner, Diane Miller Sommerville

Civil War Book Review

"To Walk About in Freedom: The Long Emancipation of Priscilla Joyner is a beautifully written chronicle of one woman’s journey from slavery into freedom. Though short in length—roughly 200 pages of text—it poignantly and effectively conveys the essence of emancipation as lived by one biracial woman raised by a white, slaveholding mother figure who refused to divulge the identity of Priscilla’s Black father."

Vigilance: The Life Of William Still, Father Of The Underground Railroad, Matthew J. Clavin Jan 2023

Vigilance: The Life Of William Still, Father Of The Underground Railroad, Matthew J. Clavin

Civil War Book Review

Reviewer Matthew J. Clavin writes that abolitionist William Still has been overshadowed by prominent antislavery activists like “Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Harriet Tubman” and others. However, Andrew K Diemer’s Vigilance: The Life of William Still, Father of the Underground Railroad (Alfred A. Knopf) is a “well-written and deeply researched biography” that will ensconce Still’s among the most important abolitionists agitators. The book itself, Clavin writes, will similarly earned “a place on the shelf of new and important works on abolitionists, abolitionism, and the Underground Railroad.”

Grant At 200: Reconsidering The Life And Legacy Of Ulysses S. Grant, Richard G. Mannion

Civil War Book Review

"As [Chris] Scaturro has suggested for years, the name Ulysses S. Grant indeed belongs in the Pantheon with the other greatest of American heroes. What had been written in his name for so long is a historical disgrace and a sad commentary of that bygone historical community. His 'reputational renaissance' is long overdue, and this piece of literature is just one more recent convincing development that will allow Grant to earn his just do."

The Gospel Of Freedom: Black Evangelicals And The Underground Railroad, Richard Newman Jan 2023

The Gospel Of Freedom: Black Evangelicals And The Underground Railroad, Richard Newman

Civil War Book Review

Just as Diemer reveals the importance of one man to the Underground Railroad, Alicestyne Turley’s The Gospel of Freedom: Black Evangelicals and the Underground Railroad (University Press of Kentucky) reveals how one state, Kentucky, was an integral if overlooked part of African Americans’ quest for emancipation in the long-nineteenth century. Reviewer Richard Newman believes Turley’s most important contribution is her contention that Black religious leaders made “Kentucky a viable pass-through locale for generations of African American freedom seekers,” which makes the state a peer of other “major crossroads of the Underground Railroad,” like “Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, and Ohio.” Newman …

Reverberations Of Boarding School Trauma In Upstate New York, Grace A. Miller Jan 2023

Reverberations Of Boarding School Trauma In Upstate New York, Grace A. Miller

Comparative Woman

The legacy of boarding schools in Upstate New York is one that non-Natives seem to have forgotten. This historical amnesia compounds other acts of genocide, including cultural genocide, of the Haudenosaunee people throughout US history. Established in 1855 at the Cattaraugus Reservation (Seneca), the Thomas Indian School would serve as an institution of forced assimilation and displacement, much like the other Native American boarding schools. While the larger US population has grown to forget these schools' existence, the shadowed legacy of institutions, like the Thomas Indian School, Haskell, and Carlisle Indian Industrial School, the rippling effects of these schools’ practices …

Twitter As Limited Digital Rhetorical Forum – The Reproductive Rights Discourse Online, Jacob L. Longini Jan 2023

Twitter As Limited Digital Rhetorical Forum – The Reproductive Rights Discourse Online, Jacob L. Longini

Comparative Woman

Rhetorical discourse has long been characterized by patriarchal systems, and this reality has persisted in online spaces. How might today’s scholar dissect and better understand the nature of online communities, specifically those that engage in women’s rights discourses? I argue that using Thomas Farrell’s notion of “rhetorical forum”, James P. Zappen’s outline for digital rhetorical theory, and Sonja K. Foss and Cindy L. Griffin’s feminist understanding of rhetorical practice, one can account for the current state of such discourses on Twitter. The patriarchal flaws that Foss and Griffin identify in traditional rhetoric can shed light on the negative aspects of …

Magpies, Bridge And Goddess: Unearthing The Hidden Symbols And Rediscovering The Lost Goddess In Chinese Qiqiao Festival, Juan Wu

Comparative Woman

The Qiqiao Festival, also known as the Qixi Festival, or Chinese valentine’s day, is a festival celebrating the annual meeting of the Cowherd and Weaver Maid in mythology. The most influential version focuses on the romance or love theme; however, it ignores its underlying historical context, gender tension and mythical belief. This paper takes the texts, rituals and materials related to the Qiqiao festival to investigate its origin and evolution. First, it takes the anthological case of the Qiqiao festival in Xihe county to explore its core image of the holy bridge and Goddess Qiao. Second, it traces the bridge …

Louisiana Agriculture Magazine, Winter 2023 Jan 2023

Louisiana Agriculture Magazine, Winter 2023

Louisiana Agriculture

Agricultural best management practices are measures that producers can take to reduce — or eliminate — farming byproducts that enter streams and groundwater. Many of these practices address fertilizer and irrigation management and the handling of pesticides and animal waste. LSU AgCenter research has helped establish these practices, and extension agents assist producers in implementing them.

This issue of Louisiana Agriculture highlights the best management practices for many of the state’s most production areas. Aquaculture specialists detail how crawfish farms can save money while meeting best management practices, and sugarcane experts tell how the AgCenter is developing new varieties to …

Human Subthalamic Nucleus Neurons Differentially Encode Speech And Limb Movement, Karim Johari, Ryan M. Kelley, Kris Tjaden, Charity G. Patterson, Andrea H. Rohl, Joel I. Berger, Daniel M. Corcos, Jeremy D.W. Greenlee Jan 2023

Human Subthalamic Nucleus Neurons Differentially Encode Speech And Limb Movement, Karim Johari, Ryan M. Kelley, Kris Tjaden, Charity G. Patterson, Andrea H. Rohl, Joel I. Berger, Daniel M. Corcos, Jeremy D.W. Greenlee

Faculty Publications

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN), which consistently improves limb motor functions, shows mixed effects on speech functions in Parkinson’s disease (PD). One possible explanation for this discrepancy is that STN neurons may differentially encode speech and limb movement. However, this hypothesis has not yet been tested. We examined how STN is modulated by limb movement and speech by recording 69 single- and multi-unit neuronal clusters in 12 intraoperative PD patients. Our findings indicated: (1) diverse patterns of modulation in neuronal firing rates in STN for speech and limb movement; (2) a higher number of STN neurons …

Objective: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a significant public health issue with a high mortality rate. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has shown promising results in treating SUD in certain cases. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of DBS in the treatment of SUD and reduction of relapse rates. Methods: We performed a thorough and methodical search of the existing scientific literature, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines, to identify 16 original studies that fulfilled our inclusion criteria. We used the evidence levels recommended by the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine to assess bias. The R version …

Modern-Day Neanderthal Genetic Lifewriting, Interspecies Romance, And The Promise Of Multispecies Autoethnography, Travis Brisini Jan 2023

Modern-Day Neanderthal Genetic Lifewriting, Interspecies Romance, And The Promise Of Multispecies Autoethnography, Travis Brisini

Faculty Publications

Advances in contemporary genetic science have reshaped the narratives whereby individuals and communities make sense of their personal, family, and communal histories. In this process, unknown connections have been revealed and familiar orthodoxies disrupted. This essay examines the consequences of a particularly unusual revelation - the dawning awareness of the presence of nonhuman and archaic human DNA in human genetic lines - for efforts at writing about identity and society. In this autoethnographic account, I examine my own genetic inheritance of Neanderthal DNA, and posit a performative concept of genetic life writing that begins to unpack the complexities of this …

How To Do The History Of Sexual Science, Benjamin Kahan, Greta Lafleur Jan 2023

How To Do The History Of Sexual Science, Benjamin Kahan, Greta Lafleur

Faculty Publications

This introduction maps the ways in which sexual scientific thought circulated during the fin de siècle, tracing the interconnections between and breaks in the global circuits of sexological thought and how this circuitry continues to structure sexuality in the present. In so doing, Kahan and LaFleur position their approach and that of the special issue as a whole within the larger field of sexology, placing it in more robust dialogue with sexuality studies and attending in particular to sexology's racial and imperial logics. They examine the ways in which racial science and colonial knowledge constitute sexual science as an amorphous …

Design, Alpha Testing, And Beta Testing Of A 3-D Printed Open-Hardware Portable Cryopreservation Device For Aquatic Species, William M. Childress, Yue Liu, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Efforts in development of germplasm repositories to preserve genetic resources of aquatic species are impeded globally by a lack of standardized, inexpensive, reproducible, and portable cryopreservation technologies. The present work demonstrates a 3-D printed standardizable freezing device that can be used with nitrogen vapor shipping dewars for on-site sperm cryopreservation for aquatic species and be distributed as open-hardware. This device could hold 22 French straws (0.25-mL or 0.5-mL) and a quick-release ring design could eject straws directly into a canister inside a dewar by pressing a button after freezing. The final prototypes produced cooling rates of 1 to 68°C/min for …

Integrated Processes Turning Pepper Sauce Waste Into Valuable By-Products, Jicheng Shu, Yongqin Yin, Zhijun Liu Jan 2023

Integrated Processes Turning Pepper Sauce Waste Into Valuable By-Products, Jicheng Shu, Yongqin Yin, Zhijun Liu

Faculty Publications

Background: Safe and efficient disposal of millions of tons of pepper sauce waste (PSW) can be a challenge to pepper sauce manufacturers that are concerned about creating environmental hazards from the processing (e.g., preservative salt and vinegar) and intrinsic (e.g., the pungent capsaicins) ingredients. It will be immensely beneficial to process these waste materials before they go to disposal. This work presents integrated approaches for a complete utilization of waste materials by removing and recovering valuable by-products and/or ingredients while succeeding to minimal to zero hazards. Methods: Laboratory- and pilot-scale extraction processes were used to demonstrate the recovery of intrinsic …

Effects Of Ketone Bodies On Energy Expenditure, Substrate Utilization, And Energy Intake In Humans, Rodrigo Fernández-Verdejo, Jacob T. Mey, Eric Ravussin

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

The potential of ketogenic approaches to regulate energy balance has recently gained attention since ketones may influence both energy expenditure and energy intake. In this narrative review, we summarized the most relevant evidence about the role of ketosis on energy expenditure, substrate utilization, and energy intake in humans. We considered different strategies to induce ketosis, such as fasting, dietary manipulation, and exogenous ketone sources. In general, ketosis does not have a major influence on energy expenditure but promotes a shift in substrate utilization towards ketone body oxidation. The strategies to induce ketosis by reduction of dietary carbohydrate availability (e.g., ketogenic …
