A Description And Comparison Of Variables That Influence Recidivism Of Selected Juveniles., Martin P. Carr
A Description And Comparison Of Variables That Influence Recidivism Of Selected Juveniles., Martin P. Carr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nationally, over $1.6 billion is spent incarcerating juveniles. Prevention, rather than correction is needed to reduce these costs. The cost in human lives exceeds the 56,000 incarcerated juveniles. It touches more than those who commit the offense. Victims, families of victims and families of the convicted juvenile also pay a price to one degree or another. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe variables which may impact recidivism rates of selected juveniles who were charged and have arrest records on file. The research was based upon East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, juvenile arrest files from 1981 through …

Eric Voegelin's Mystical Epistemology And Its Influence On Ethics And Politics., Charles Warren Burchfield
Eric Voegelin's Mystical Epistemology And Its Influence On Ethics And Politics., Charles Warren Burchfield
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this dissertation is to examine and analyze Eric Voegelin's theory of knowledge, and to see what implications it has on his theories of ethics and politics. The profundity of Voegelin's epistemological search and recovery is apparent when placed in the context of his disillusionment with and resistance to the dominant epistemology of his day, namely, positivism. Through a recovery and restoration of the symbolizations of classical and Christian philosophy, Voegelin searches for and finds experiential knowledge which is gained through faith in search of understanding (fides quaerens intellectum), which brings about a vision of the whole …
The Dimensionality Of Factors Underlying Satisfaction With Continuing Care Retirement Communities., Aimee Desobry Prawitz
The Dimensionality Of Factors Underlying Satisfaction With Continuing Care Retirement Communities., Aimee Desobry Prawitz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose was to develop and test a model to predict satisfaction with consumer selection of continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). The family resource management conceptual framework of Deacon and Firebaugh (1988) provided the theoretical base for development of the proposed model. Another area of study, consumer behavior, was drawn upon to find pertinent indicators for the decision-making component of the model. Constructs of the Engel, Blackwell and Miniard (1990) consumer behavior model were incorporated to represent the managerial aspect of the family resource management model. The model was tested by applying it to the CCRC selection process of consumers. …
Murderous Historian: Henry Adams, Modernity, And The Problem Of Subjectivity. (Volumes I And Ii)., Martha Moseley Regalis
Murderous Historian: Henry Adams, Modernity, And The Problem Of Subjectivity. (Volumes I And Ii)., Martha Moseley Regalis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study traces Henry Adams's evolution from an enlightenment historian to a prescient postmodern theorist, and explores how he came to regard his own intellectual history as paradigmatic of the arc of subjectivity in the West from the Middle Ages to Nietzsche and Bergson. Adams was a self-conscious philosophical nominalist, and he believed that his radical doubts about the capacity of language for embodying meaning had their origin in medieval nominalism. Adams found the seeds of modernity and the problem of subjectivity which were the focus of his own musings on the nature of the self and history in Abelard …
Narrative And Representation In French Colonial Literature Of Indochina., Jean Marie Turcotte Walls
Narrative And Representation In French Colonial Literature Of Indochina., Jean Marie Turcotte Walls
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study focuses on the establishment and critical legitimation of colonial literature as a genre during the period of intense colonial development in France from approximately 1871-1930. Fictional accounts of the French involvement in Indochina are used to examine the paradoxes of colonial representation. Les Civilises by Claude Farrere, Le Kilometre 83 by Henri Daguerches, and Sur la Route Mandarine by Roland Dorgeles are examined in terms of the inconsistencies and contradictions which emerge from the efforts of the narrator/colonizer to inscribe and represent the other in a composite colonial system. These texts are examined in terms of three textual …
Literature Of Protest: The Franco Years., Margaret Carmell Gonzalez
Literature Of Protest: The Franco Years., Margaret Carmell Gonzalez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the relationship between Spanish literature and political opposition under the Franco regime. Chapter 1 introduces the concept of a political discourse that characterizes a historical era, specifically addressing that of the Franco era in Spain. Directly linked to the idea of a political discourse is the theory of a literary generation, united by the common experiences or characteristics of a specific time period, such as those of the Franco regime. Together, these two concepts helped establish a foundation for the transition to democracy in Spain. Chapter 2 discusses the mythic foundations of Spanish culture in general, and …
New Teacher Attrition: The Case Of Louisiana., Carl Daniel Frantz
New Teacher Attrition: The Case Of Louisiana., Carl Daniel Frantz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study explores district public policies and approaches in Louisiana that are likely to be effective in retaining new public classroom teachers. It does this by looking both at reasons for, and solutions to, new teacher attrition. It employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. These include quantitative analysis of the teacher attrition experience in Louisiana parish school districts as well as relationships of district, teacher and student variables to new teacher attrition rates. The qualitative analysis uses information from teachers and administrators in one rural and one non rural set of school districts with widely differing new teacher …
The Stylistic Mechanics Of Implicitness: Entailment, Presupposition, And Implicature In The Work Of Ernest Hemingway And Tim O'Brien., Donna Glee Williams
The Stylistic Mechanics Of Implicitness: Entailment, Presupposition, And Implicature In The Work Of Ernest Hemingway And Tim O'Brien., Donna Glee Williams
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The discipline of linguistics has identified three patterns through which unstated information may be conveyed: entailment, presupposition, and implicature. Using these theoretical constructs, analysts may determine systematically how propositions which are never asserted may nonetheless be communicated. In the old writers' maxim "Show me; don't tell me," "showing" corresponds to implicit communication of unstated material, while "telling" corresponds to the overt assertion of the proposition of interest. Examination of texts by Hemingway and O'Brien reveals carefully controlled use of the linguistic strategies of implicitness to suspend meaning between and behind the fixed points of the words on the page. This …

The independent variables included in the predictive portion of the study were active medical problems, manic symptoms, depressive symptoms, psychotic symptoms, alcohol abuse symptoms, non-alcohol substance abuse symptoms, anxiety symptoms, somatic symptoms, somatization symptoms, personality disorder symptoms, life events, and social support. …
Support For Higher Education In The 1992-1993 Louisiana Legislature., Sandra Bernard Dugas
Support For Higher Education In The 1992-1993 Louisiana Legislature., Sandra Bernard Dugas
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The public higher education system in Louisiana is facing a variety of problems. The Louisiana Legislature plays a vital role in the determination of policy regarding higher education in the state. Legislators have the responsibility of addressing current and emerging issues and finding solutions to problems. The purpose of the study was to determine the voting record of members of the 1992 Louisiana Legislature on issues facing higher education so as to infer legislative support for higher education. This purpose was accomplished by studying roll call votes on bills considered important to higher education in relation to personal characteristics of …
Workplace Literacy Skills And Occupational Interests Of Dislocated Workers., Robert Francis Doyle
Workplace Literacy Skills And Occupational Interests Of Dislocated Workers., Robert Francis Doyle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to: describe Louisiana dislocated workers who participated in the Louisiana Job Link Center (LA JLC) at LSU by workplace literacy skills (reading, writing, computation), occupational interests, and the demographics of age-group, gender, educational level, and DOT code of last job; compare workplace literacy skills on selected demographics; and determine if workplace literacy skills are independent of occupational interests and selected demographics. A simple random sample of 232 dislocated workers was drawn from the accessible population. The data used in this study was obtained from a larger data base collected and held by the Director …
Estimation Of Premorbid Intelligence: A Combined Demographic And Psychometric Approach., Sandra Cook Friedberg
Estimation Of Premorbid Intelligence: A Combined Demographic And Psychometric Approach., Sandra Cook Friedberg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A combined demographic and present abilities approach to estimate premorbid intellectual functioning was developed and cross validated on unimpaired and closed head injured subjects. The non-clinical sample included 75 non-neurologically impaired individuals divided into two groups. The development sample (n = 50) was used to generate linear regression equations to estimate WAIS-R IQs from the estimated Barona IQ score (Barona, Reynolds, & Chastain, 1984) plus error score on the National Adult Reading Test (NART; Nelson, 1982). The cross-validation sample (n = 25) were individually matched to the clinical subjects on age, education, gender, and race variables. The clinical sample included …
The Impact Of Trait Anxiety On Slow-Wave Sleep Processes., Kristi Hulse Fuller
The Impact Of Trait Anxiety On Slow-Wave Sleep Processes., Kristi Hulse Fuller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The sleep of high anxiety/worry and low anxiety/worry subjects was studied by means of nocturnal polysomnography. Fifteen high anxiety adult subjects were chosen to represent an analog Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) population, and were selected from among individuals scoring within the upper 20th percentile on the trait portion of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ). Fifteen low anxiety subjects were selected from among individuals scoring within the lower 50th percentile on those measures, and were matched with high anxiety subjects for age, sex, race, and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores. Analysis of polysomnography variables …
Comedy Of Redemption In Three Southern Writers., Carolyn Patricia Gardner
Comedy Of Redemption In Three Southern Writers., Carolyn Patricia Gardner
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present study discusses a theological motif in the works of three Southern writers, Faulkner, Percy, and Toole, with The Unvanquished, The Moviegoer, and A Confederacy of Dunces being the works chosen for examination. The particular nature of religion in a Southern novel is established early. The Southern novelist is concerned not with sin in the abstract but with the existential angst resulting from it and with the hope of redemption. Also, in the Southern novel, there is humor undergirding even the study of existential angst. God's comedy is the focus of this study of the movement toward redemption in …
Nurturing In The Novels Of Fanny Burney, Ann Radcliffe, And Ellen Price Wood., Sarah Domingue Spence
Nurturing In The Novels Of Fanny Burney, Ann Radcliffe, And Ellen Price Wood., Sarah Domingue Spence
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Employing attachment theory of contemporary psychology, I explore nurturing in the novels of Fanny Burney, Ann Radcliffe, and Ellen Price Wood. The heroines' need for nurturing manifests itself in diverse aspects of the genre. In the mother's absence, various attachment figures, such as guardians, surrogate mothers, sister/friend relationships serve as nurturer. In Fanny Burney's novels, Evelina, Cecilia, and The Wanderer, fortune and a family name become important societal goals. Joyce Hemlow's and Margaret Doody's works supply criticism and biographical data. In Radcliffe's Gothic novels, The Mysteries of Udolpho, and The Italian, the heroines' attachment bond is analyzed using Ellen Moers' …
Validation Study Of The Teacher Ratings Of Individual Student Skills And Achievement (Trissa)., Wayne Thomas Stewart
Validation Study Of The Teacher Ratings Of Individual Student Skills And Achievement (Trissa)., Wayne Thomas Stewart
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to assess the concurrent, predictive, and discriminant validity of the Teacher Ratings of Individual Student Skills and Achievement (TRISSA). The TRISSA was developed in three major phases. Phase I consisted of the generation of an item pool and review of these items by experts. Phase II involved teachers completing the original 100-item TRISSA and subjecting data to a factor analytic study. Based on the factor analysis of 1,049 cases, a revised TRISSA (i.e., TRISSA-36) was produced. The TRISSA-36 was administered to teachers as part of actual pupil appraisal evaluations in three parishes in southeastern …
Cognition And Learning: The Implications Of A Situated Connectionist Perspective For Theory And Practice In Education., John A. St. Julien
Cognition And Learning: The Implications Of A Situated Connectionist Perspective For Theory And Practice In Education., John A. St. Julien
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this dissertation I attempt to construct a framework for an alternate theory of instruction, starting from the position that education has no theory of learning; instead, what passes for theories of learning are actually descriptions of the conditions under which knowledge is acquired. Descriptive theorizing does not serve education well because it is not likely, being a description of what is known told in terms of assumed categories, to be generative or adaptive. I question the naturalness of current assumptions about thought and learning by tracing the consolidation of the present discursive formation around a presumed unity of logic, …
Bombesin-Induced Hypothermia At Normal Ambient Temperatures: Contribution Of The Sympathetic Nervous System., John Christopher Barton
Bombesin-Induced Hypothermia At Normal Ambient Temperatures: Contribution Of The Sympathetic Nervous System., John Christopher Barton
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bombesin is a tetradecapeptide first isolated from frog skin. This peptide has potent effects on core body temperature of rats when administered centrally. Bombesin-induced hypothermia at normal ambient temperatures appears to be dependent upon some pre-existent condition which may be related to nutritional status. Four experiments were conducted to examine if the pre-existing condition for bombesin-induced hypothermia at normal ambient temperatures is primarily related to modulation of sympathetic nervous system activation. Experiment I demonstrated that central bombesin resulted in hypothermia in rats tested at normal ambient temperatures under conditions of ad-libitum access to food only when injected peripherally with the …
An Investigation Of Behavior Problems Of Children With Down Syndrome And Their Relationship To Life Events., David Alan Coe
An Investigation Of Behavior Problems Of Children With Down Syndrome And Their Relationship To Life Events., David Alan Coe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Behavior problems of 44 children with Down Syndrome between the ages of 6 and 15 and 44 controls without mental retardation matched for age, sex and socioeconomic status were compared by means of mother and teacher ratings. Ratings from both sources indicated that children with Down Syndrome had more behavior problems, in particular attention deficit, noncompliance, thought disorder and social withdrawal. Thirty one percent of these children were identified by mothers as having a significant behavior problem compared with 58% of those rated by teachers. In both cases, Down Syndrome behavior problem prevalence exceeded that for controls by a three …
Factors Affecting Intended Self-Referral To An Employee Assistance Program., Paul Richard Damiano
Factors Affecting Intended Self-Referral To An Employee Assistance Program., Paul Richard Damiano
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Using data from 256 subjects from three organizations which all had employee assistance programs (EAP), this study explored factors hypothesized to affect the likelihood for employees to self-refer to the EAP. Using both correlational data and a 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 repeated measures ANOVA, it was found that perceived confidentiality, reputation of the program, perceived problem seriousness, and type of problem (job, financial, health, psychological, or relationship) were significantly related to the intent to self-refer. There was also evidence that perceived controllability of the problem and a job performance decrement influenced the propensity to self-refer. An additional …
The Effect Of Time Pressure On Auditor Attention To Red Flags In A Dual-Task Environment., Robert Lance Braun
The Effect Of Time Pressure On Auditor Attention To Red Flags In A Dual-Task Environment., Robert Lance Braun
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Motivated by recent attention given to the independent auditor's role in detecting red flags, this dissertation investigates the effect of time pressure on auditors' attention to red flags in the auditing environment. In so doing, the earlier work of McDaniel (1990) investigating the effects of time pressure on the auditor's ability to execute auditing tests of details is extended. Authoritative sources indicating that red flag detection is performed as a subsidiary task in a multi-task auditing environment are presented. The Easterbrook hypothesis, which holds that a progressive reduction in the range of cue utilization accompanies increases in arousal, provides theoretical …
Effects Of Threat-Related Emotional Information In A Lexical Decision Task: Examination Of Cognitive And Motor Performance., Sheryl Rene Jackson
Effects Of Threat-Related Emotional Information In A Lexical Decision Task: Examination Of Cognitive And Motor Performance., Sheryl Rene Jackson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recently, attention has been given to the cognitive processing of aversive emotional, or threat-related, information. Although investigations have often focused on anxiety disordered individuals, it is suggested that examination of "normal" individuals with varying levels of anxiety will increase the understanding of the cognitive processing of aversive emotional, or threat-related, information. It has been hypothesized that high anxious individuals exhibit an attentional bias toward threat-related emotional information. The response of low anxious individuals to threat-related information is unclear. Some evidence suggests that non-anxiety disordered individuals employ a mechanism that inhibits or interferes with the processing of threat-related, emotional information. The …
Teachers' Perceptions Of Principal Style And Sense Of Autonomy In Differentially Effective Schools., Corinne Falterman Hebert
Teachers' Perceptions Of Principal Style And Sense Of Autonomy In Differentially Effective Schools., Corinne Falterman Hebert
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was threefold. Phase I involved a reconstruction of the Change Facilitator Style of Principal (CFSP) instrument developed by Bost and Ruch (1986). Phase II was an ex post facto study that investigated teachers' perceptions of their principals' change facilitator style and of their autonomy, and Phase III encompassed the collection of qualitative data. The questionnaire originally developed by Bost and Ruch (1985) had some inadequate psychometric properties. These inadequacies were uncovered and further explored by examining the frequency distributions of the items from a previous study, and by conducting a construct validation of the instrument. …
Selective Information Processing Of Body Size And Food Related Stimuli In Women Who Are Preoccupied With Body Size., Richard Daniel Fuller
Selective Information Processing Of Body Size And Food Related Stimuli In Women Who Are Preoccupied With Body Size., Richard Daniel Fuller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Overconcern or preoccupation with body size and weight is a central psychopathological feature of the eating disorders. The overconcern with body size is considered to be a function of fear of weight gain or "fear of fatness". Cognitive theories of psychopathology have hypothesized that fear results in an increased activation of cognitive structures associated with the feared object. This increased activation (priming) is hypothesized to enhance the processing of information related to the feared object. This study tested this hypothesis using a lexical decision task. Individuals with extreme body size preoccupation were evaluated for a selective information processing of body …

Cognitive Distortions, Impulsivity, And Stressful Life Events In Suicidal Adolescents., Christine Sadowski
Cognitive Distortions, Impulsivity, And Stressful Life Events In Suicidal Adolescents., Christine Sadowski
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Among adolescents, escalating rates of completed and attempted suicide are reported worldwide (Maris, 1985). In the literature, a variety of risk factors have been associated with suicidality in adolescence. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between cognitive distortions, impulsivity, and stressful life events in suicidal adolescents. A total of 118 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 years participated in this investigation. The subjects comprised four groups: inpatient suicide attempters (n = 33); inpatient and outpatient suicide ideators (n = 17); inpatient, nonsuicidal controls (n = 33), and community high school controls(n = 35). Subjects …
