Behavior Of The American Alligator In A Louisiana Freshwater Marsh., William Lee Rootes
Behavior Of The American Alligator In A Louisiana Freshwater Marsh., William Lee Rootes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Stomachs from 706 alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) harvested from a southern Louisiana fresh marsh in 1987 and 1988 were examined for web tags from smaller marked alligators. Alligators $$2.73 m TL) were significantly more cannibalistic than smaller alligators (P $<$ 0.0001). Males and females were cannibalized in the same proportion they occurred in the population. Cannibalism mortality appeared to be distributed proportionately among all cohorts in the 0.35-2.12 m TL size classes resulting in a relatively uniform reduction across the group. Cannibalism was found to be an important population regulating mechanism, accounting for an estimated 50.2% of total hatchling mortality and 70.1% of total mortality in age 11 months and older alligators. Male growth rates in both a palustrine marsh (Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge) and estuarine marsh (Rockefeller Refuge) marsh types were greater than female rates (P $<$ 0.0001). Growth rates and weight-length ratios of alligators in estuarine marsh were greater than those of alligators in palustrine marsh (P $<$ 0.0001). Age specific fecundity and survivorship rates of alligators in the palustrine marsh were less than alligators in the estuarine marsh. The home range size and activity pattern of adult female alligators of different reproductive status were compared among seasons of the year. Home range size (P = 0.54) and minimum average daily movement rates (P = 0.85) did not differ between nesting and non-nesting radio-collared females during the summer nesting season. No difference was found between females with and without broods in the two variables during the fall brooding season. Adult radio-collared female alligators ranged over larger areas and had greater daily average daily movement rates during the spring breeding season than during any other season of the year (P $<$ 0.01). Annual home range size of the 15 adult female alligators monitored during the study was 36.2 $\pm$ 42.6 (SD) ha.

Changes In Lipid Composition Of Gulf Coast Marine Species As Influenced By Processing And Storage Treatments., Rafida Idris
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The lipid composition, and changes to lipid components of several marine finfish due to frozen storage, canning and use of various physical and chemical treatments during storage were evaluated. In Phase I, and lipid content of mullet (Mugil cephalus), croaker (Micropogon undulatus), redfish (Sciaenops ocllata) and red snapper (Lutiganus campechanus) fillets obtained from a local supermarket, was approximately 5% with phospholipids representing $<$5% of the total lipid. Vitamin A was not detectable but vitamin E was found in mullet. Mullet had a higher degree of oxidation compared to other species. In Phase II, fresh mullet were wrapped in oxygen impermeable freezer paper or vacuum packaged and frozen at $-$20$\sp\circ$C, or were thermally processed. After 90 days of frozen storage, a second batch of mullet was thermally processed. Total lipid, phospholipid, vitamins A and E and oxidation were determined at 0, 90, 180 and 360 days of storage. TBA number increased by 9.42mg/1000 g after 360 days of frozen storage. Oxidation did not occur in canned fish. Fish canned at 90 days evidenced greater oxidation after canning but further oxidation during storage did not occur. Vacuum packaging inhibited oxidation to a significant degree. Phospholipid decreased in frozen fish to the greatest degree, followed by vacuum packaged samples. Loss of phospholipid in freshly canned mullet was small. In frozen canned mullet, the change was greater. Vitamin E level decreased during frozen storage from 0.69 mg/100 g to a trace amount and the loss was 38% as a result of canning. In Phase III a comparative effect of prefreezing dip treatment, use of antioxidants in the dip and oxygen limitation by vacuum packaging on the lipid composition of frozen stored blackdrum (Pogonius cromis) was studied. Analyses were made at 2 week interval during a 12 week storage period. Total lipid averaged 4% in all treatment samples and phospholipid was $<$5% of total lipids. The effectivness for the inhibition of oxidation in frozen blackdrum was 0.025% TBHQ (tert-butylhydroquinone) $>$ 1% and 0.5% $\alpha$-tocopherol $>$ water dip $>$ vacuum pack $>$ no dip treatment. Vitamin A was quantifiable but not Vitamin E. No significant change in Vitamin A content was observed in any …$5%>

The Development Of A Fetal Uterine Cell In Vitro Coculture System For Mammalian Embryos., Klaus Enrique Wiemer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In Experiment I, 125 two-pronuclear murine ova were cultured in either Ham's F-10 plus l5% human serum (HF-10h), on a monolayer of human uterine fibroblasts (HUC) or fetal bovine uterine fibroblasts (FBUC). After 96 hours in culture, 2.4% embryos in HF-10h were viable compared with 45.2% and 61% for embryos on HUC and FBUC, respectively. Results suggest that monolayers were advantageous to medium alone for culturing murine embryos. Experiment II was conducted to assess the development of 117 bovine embryos in HF-10 (Treatment A), on a monolayer of FBUC (Treatment B) or hormone-pretreated FBUC (Treatment C). Embryo viability assessed at …

Feeding And Foraging Behaviors Of Subterranean Termites (Isoptera:Rhinotermitidae)., Keith Scott Delaplane
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Six studies were done on feeding and foraging behaviors of three species of subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), and R. virginicus (Banks) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae). When presented with four equal wood blocks, C. formosanus did not forage randomly but concentrated on a few preferred blocks. When R. flavipes and C. formosanus were each placed in foraging arenas with linear, successive wood blocks, C. formosanus consumed a greater percentage dry mass of a wood block before moving to the next block (10.3%) than did R. flavipes (4.2%). Groups of C. formosanus were offered wood blocks that differed in initial …

We have investigated the mechanisms whereby equimolar quantities of ribosomal proteins accumulate and assemble into ribosomes of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Extra copies of the cry1 or RPL16 genes encoding ribosomal proteins rp59 or L16 were introduced into yeast by transformation. Excess cry1 or RPL16 mRNA accumulated in polyribosomes in these cells and was translated at wild-type rates into rp59 or L16 proteins. These excess proteins were degraded until their levels reached those of other ribosomal proteins. Identical results were obtained when the transcription of RPL16A was rapidly induced using GAL1-RPL16A promoter fusions, including a construct in which the entire …

Since 1976 there has been a leveling off or slowdown in the rate of decline in coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality. The age-adjusted absolute annual rate of decline in CHD mortality rates during 1968-75 (Δ rate/100,000 population/year) was virtually identical for White males (-7.54), Black males (-7.85), and Black females (-7.20), and somewhat lower for White females (-4.25). During 1976-85, however, the secular trends diverged considerably. Age-adjusted rates continued to decline at the same annual rate for White males, while the decline was approximately half as steep for the other three race-sex groups. During 1976-85 there was also a leveling …

An Analysis Of Rice Import Demand In Selected Asian Economies., Wijepala Rupasinghe Jayawardana
An Analysis Of Rice Import Demand In Selected Asian Economies., Wijepala Rupasinghe Jayawardana
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary purpose of this study was to analyze the rice import demand behavior in seven Asian countries namely, India, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Three rice import demand models were estimated, the direct demand model which treats imports as a function of border prices and income, the residual import demand model where the imports are the excess of consumption over domestic production, and the reduced form model which incorporates both domestic demand and supply variables. Import demand functions were estimated by the ordinary least squares (OLS) method. Seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) was …

Physicochemical Properties Of Brown Rice As Influenced By Gamma-Irradiation, Variety And Storage., Veronica Castro Sabularse
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Effects of gamma-irradiation, variety and storage on physicochemical properties of brown rice from three Louisiana rice varieties: Mars, a medium grain variety, Lemont and Tebonnet, long grain varieties, were determined. Cooking time was significantly reduced in Mars and Lemont at doses of 200 and 300 Krads. Irradiation increased cooking rate, water uptake at 80$\sp\circ$C, water uptake ratios, total solids content in residual cooking liquid and starch damage from 100 to 300 Krad samples. Water uptake at 96$\sp\circ$C generally decreased with increasing dose levels. Evidence indicated alterations in the rice grain structure and composition. The component drastically affected by gamma-irradiation was …

Cows diagnosed as having clinical mastitis and from two sire selection lines were compared to assess differences in somatic cell count scores, duration of clinical episode and number of antibiotic treatments applied. The effect of various environmental factors and type traits on somatic cell count score (SCCS) and on duration of episode was investigated and amount and cost of discarded milk was calculated. Data consisted of multiple observations on cows diagnosed as clinically infected at least once during a lactation. Single trait (ST) cows were daughters of sires selected based on predicted differences for milk. Multiple trait (MT) cows were …
The Effects Of Marginal And Severe Dietary Magnesium And Copper Deficiencies On Immune Function., Marlene Marie Most Windhauser
The Effects Of Marginal And Severe Dietary Magnesium And Copper Deficiencies On Immune Function., Marlene Marie Most Windhauser
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Throughout history, people speculated that an association existed between nutrition and disease prevention. Recently, studies have examined the influence of single nutrients on immunological mechanisms, but with limited focus on marginal deficiencies. This project investigated the effects of severe, marginal, and adequate levels of dietary magnesium and copper on immune function. Three experiments were conducted, with 100 gm male rats consuming one treatment diet for three, four or eight weeks. Mineral levels used were: (1) magnesium--50 ug/gm, 160 ug/gm, 280 ug/gm, 400 ug/gm; (2) copper--0.5 ug/gm, 2.0 ug/gm, 3.5 ug/gm, 5.0 ug/gm; or (3) a combination of the severely deficient …
Genetics Of Callus Formation And Plant Regeneration In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Qi Ren Chu
Genetics Of Callus Formation And Plant Regeneration In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Qi Ren Chu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Callus formation and plant regeneration rates for both immature panicle and anther culture of rice were studied in several populations, including parents, F$\sb1$, F$\sb2$, F$\sb3$, and backcrossed generations. Significant genotypic differences in regeneration and callus formation rates were observed. In immature panicle culture, F$\sb1$'s generally produced rates of regeneration close to their high parents. Generation mean analysis of regeneration rates revealed the importance of dominance effects (d) and epistatic effects (aa, ad, and dd) in immature panicle culture. In contrast, production of callus by 12 F$\sb1$ hybrids in another culture was closely related to the low parents, suggesting that suppression …

Effects Of Quantity Of Epicuticular Wax On Leaves And Nitrogen Fertilization Rates On Resistance Of Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) To Sheath Blight (Rhizoctonia Solani Kuhn (Thanatephorus Cucumeris (Frank) Donk);)., Roland Chris Yarkpah Massaquoi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nine rice cultivars with different levels of resistance to sheath blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani, were evaluated in the field and greenhouse for quantity of epicuticular wax (EW) from leaves, infection cushion (IC) formation by the pathogen on leaves, and the relationship of these factors to disease resistance. Comparisons among resistant and susceptible cultivars using scanning electron microscopy suggested that more EW was found on the leaf blade and sheath surfaces of resistant cultivars. Gravimetric analysis of EW from rice leaves supported these observations. EW production at different growth stages increased until the boot stage and then dropped. Correlation coefficients …

The Role Of Dietary Compliance In Survival Of Hemodialysis Patients., Laurie Ruggiero
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal of the current study was to gain knowledge of the role that dietary compliance plays in the survival of end-stage renal failure patients receiving chronic in-center hemodialysis. As a result of this type of research, health care professionals may better understand the individual and collective influence that various aspects of dietary compliance have on survival. This knowledge would also be helpful in the identification and intervention of dietary noncompliance in hemodialysis patients. The present study investigated the relation of three commonly employed physiological parameters of dietary compliance to survival on hemodialysis and how well these dietary variables independently …

Effect Of Dietary Lipids And Cholesterol On Liver And Yolk Cholesterol Levels And Fatty Acid Composition Of Serum Cholesterol Esters In Laying Hens., Lincoln F. Berrio
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Several experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of various lipids on laying hen cholesterol metabolism. Hens of equal age and production status were used and housed in individual cages with individual feeders. Main responses measured were yolk, liver and serum cholesterol, and fatty acid composition of serum cholesterol esters. Preliminary results showed a significant linear yolk cholesterol increase on day 9 with 0, 0.5, and 1% dietary cholesterol. Added levels of up to 4% cholesterol for 21 days failed to significantly increase further yolk cholesterol. Serum cholesterol was unaffected. In six subsequent experiments, the following lipid comparisons were made …
Physiological And Behavioral Responses To Aerial Exposure In The Asian Clam, Corbicula Fluminea (Muller)., Roger Anthony Byrne
Physiological And Behavioral Responses To Aerial Exposure In The Asian Clam, Corbicula Fluminea (Muller)., Roger Anthony Byrne
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Aerially exposed, bivalve molluscs face opposing problems of preventing water loss, and maintaining metabolism. Because of the unpredictability of emersion duration, most freshwater bivalve families are capable of extensive emersion tolerance. Corbicula fluminea (Muller) is a relatively recent invader of freshwater and shares many physiological features with its estuarine ancestors. It might be expected to be intermediate in its emersion responses between those of more ancient freshwater forms, and those of estuarine clams. In air, C. fluminea displayed ventilatory behaviors which were associated with high rates of aerial O$\sb2$ uptake and CO$\sb2$ release. Normoxically exposed clams had bursts of heat …

Permethrin, fenvalerate, methomyl, acephate and methyl parathion were bioassayed on larvae of the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) and the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hubner) fed on susceptible (Bragg) versus resistant (PI 227687) soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., cultivars. Soybean loopers reared on resistant leaves were significantly more susceptible to acephate (2-fold) than when reared on susceptible leaves. Velvetbean caterpillars fed resistant leaves were more susceptible to both fenvalerate (1.5-fold) and acephate (1.6-fold) than when fed susceptible leaves. Differences in toxicity of other insecticides due to host plant were not observed. Midgut homogenates from last instar soybean loopers reared on …
Cell Division Studies Of Escherichia Coli: Expression And Protein Localization Of Cell Septation Gene, Ftsa., Chong Chon Younghae
Cell Division Studies Of Escherichia Coli: Expression And Protein Localization Of Cell Septation Gene, Ftsa., Chong Chon Younghae
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
FtsA is a gene essential for cell septation. It has been postulated to have both regulatory and structural functions. To study the structural involvement of the FtsA protein in septum formation, four FtsA-LacZ protein fusions were constructed using a mini-Mu transposon (MudII1734). When maxicells containing either ftsA-lacZ or ftsA specifying plasmids were radioactively labelled and fractionated, FtsA-LacZ fusion protein and FtsA were located in both the membrane and cytoplasmic fractions. The FtsA-LacZ fusion proteins were also located in dividing wild type dividing cells by measuring $\beta$-galactosidase activity. Cell envelope fractions from a sucrose equilibrium gradient had $\beta$-galactosidase activity in outer …
The Dextranase Of Lipomyces Starkeyi And Its Use In Sugar Cane Processing., David William Koenig
The Dextranase Of Lipomyces Starkeyi And Its Use In Sugar Cane Processing., David William Koenig
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Dextranase is an enzyme which destroys dextran, a contaminant in sugar and a main constituent of dental plaque. Dextranase utilization can solve a major economic problem in the sugar industry, and in dental preparations it can keep teeth essentially free of plaque. The dextranase from the yeast Lipomyces starkeyi was investigated because this organism has been used in food related processes. This attribute should allow for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use of a Lipomyces dextranase. None of the existing commercial dextranase preparations have FDA approval. L. starkeyi was found to produce maximum amounts of dextranase when grown …
The Role Of Curved Dna In Promoter Selection By The Major Bacillus Subtilis Rna Polymerase., Carl Feemster Mcallister
The Role Of Curved Dna In Promoter Selection By The Major Bacillus Subtilis Rna Polymerase., Carl Feemster Mcallister
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The major RNA polymerases of Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli recognize the same conserved sequences at $-$10 and $-$35 of the promoter. The B. subtilis enzyme requires additional DNA sequences for efficient promoter utilization. Deletion mutants were used to demonstrate that the function of two B. subtilis phage SP82 promoters, Ba1129 and Alu156, was dramatically affected by sequence upstream from $-$35. The upstream DNA contained runs of four to six adenines with a 10-11 base pair periodicity. Indicative of DNA curvature, these regions decreased electrophoretic mobility of DNA fragments containing either promoter. The curved upstream DNA increased the affinity of …

A series of greenhouse experiments was conducted to investigate the effects of insect-induced defoliation on growth and N$\sb2$-fixing ability of soybean. This research had three major objectives: (1) to examine the effects of different levels of defoliation, (2) to determine the impact of progressive defoliation, and (3) to study the ability of soybeans to recover following defoliation. All experiments were conducted in a similar manner. Larvae of the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), were used to defoliate soybeans in the vegetative stage of development and the acetylene-ethylene reduction assay was used to provide an indirect measure of N$\sb2$-fixing ability of …
