Influence Of Storage Temperature And Duration On Deterioration Of Film-Wrapped And Non-Wrapped Mustard, Brassica Juncea Coss., Regina Poillion Bracy
Influence Of Storage Temperature And Duration On Deterioration Of Film-Wrapped And Non-Wrapped Mustard, Brassica Juncea Coss., Regina Poillion Bracy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mustard "greens' is a popular fresh vegetable, especially in the South. Fresh market production, however, is restricted to local sales or short-distance markets due to the relatively short shelf life of mustard. Packaging has been shown to successfully extend the shelf life of several fruits and vegetables. To determine the effect of packaging and storage temperature on the postharvest life and quality of mustard, mustard was stored at 1, 4, and 15C in perforated polyethylene bags, Cryovac D-955 60-gauge or 100-guage heat-shrinkable films or not-wrapped. A preliminary experiment was conducted with spinach to develop experiment methodology and for comparison of …

Using The Domestic Chicken Egg For Culturing Preimplantation Mammalian Embryos., Eldred Griffin Blakewood
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A novel embryo culture system has been developed using 96-hour chick embryos. One to four mammalian embryos can be injected into the chick embryo amnion (CEA) and allowed to develop for 72 to 96 hours. Pronuclear-stage mouse embryos from two different strains were cultured in the CEA or in Whitten's medium. There were more expanded blastocysts from one strain of embryos when cultured in the CEA. More hatched blastocysts resulted from embryos of both strains when cultured in the CEA. Two to eight-cell goat embryos cultured in the CEA for 72 hours or on cell monolayers reached to blastocyst stage …
The Introduction Of A Gene Encoding A Novel Peptide Into Plants To Increase Plant Bacterial Resistance., Pablito Garcia Nagpala
The Introduction Of A Gene Encoding A Novel Peptide Into Plants To Increase Plant Bacterial Resistance., Pablito Garcia Nagpala
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A 38 amino acid long peptide, Shiva-1, was designed and chemically synthesized in our laboratory. Shiva-1 has only 46% amino acid homology with the naturally occurring lytic peptide from Hyalophora cecropia, known as Cecropin B. However, hydrophobic properties and charge density of the natural molecule were conserved at 100% in the synthetic peptide. This novel peptide was shown to be capable of killing a number of different species of plant pathogenic bacteria at nanomolar concentrations. Comparative studies show that Shiva-1 is more effective in this bacteriolytic activity than Cecropin B. The gene for Shiva-1 was chemically synthesized and cloned into …
The Design And Expression Of A Synthetic Gene Encoding A Novel Polypeptide To Enhance The Quality Of Plant Protein., Jaeho Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A novel protein (HEAAE II, High Essential Amino Acid Encoding Protein), rich in essential amino acids (75% of total), was designed and constructed in our laboratory. The monomeric form of the protein consists of 20 amino acid residues with four additional amino acids comprising a potential $\beta$-turn. Circular dichroism and size exclusion analysis demonstrated, that the monomer exists in a stable $\alpha$-helical conformation that self-aggregates in aqueous solution to form higher ordered multimeric structures, which are very reminiscent of natural plant storage proteins. The DNA encoding this amino acid sequence was synthesized, and from this monomeric gene fragment, the tetrameric …

Evaluation Of The Crawfish Chitin-Carotenoid Complex And Its Nutritional/Pigmentation Effect In Poultry Diets., Keun Soo Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present investigation involved utilization of the chitin-carotenoid complex and the whole meal derived from crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) composite byproduct, in controlled broiler diets to determine the biological value of these substrates as potential sources of growth promoters, red intensifying agents, and protein supplements. Included are basic studies of the unique characteristics of the chitin-protein and chitin-carotenoid complexes. The crawfish chitin-carotenoid substrate did not exhibit any deleterious effects on broiler growth performance in terms of animal weight gain and feed efficiency at levels up to 5% of the total diet. Controlled chitin addition to the diet indicated no apparent relationship …
Evaluation Of Aeromonas Hydrophila Virulence Factors: Role In Natural Epizootics And Their Use As Potential Immunogens., Larisa Ann Ford
Evaluation Of Aeromonas Hydrophila Virulence Factors: Role In Natural Epizootics And Their Use As Potential Immunogens., Larisa Ann Ford
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Aeromonas hydrophila and A. sobria have been identified as major causes of mortalities among commercially raised channel catfish and are the cause of septicemic diseases in a wide variety of other animals. At present, antibiotic therapy is the only prescribed treatment for Motile Aeromonad Septicemia (HAS) in channel catfish. Antibiotic treatment, however, is expensive and often not effective due to the development of resistance in the bacterial strains. Development of immunoprophylatic methods for the prevention of HAS would be of value and use to the commercial catfish industry. Several studies have demonstrated that whole cell vaccine preparations do not confer …

Nitrogen Fixation In Beggiatoa, Vitreoscilla, And Thiothrix., James Kevin Polman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Many strains of Beggiatoa, Vitreoscilla, and Thiothrix were found to be capable of nitrogen fixation and to harbor plasmid DNA of various sizes, including large plasmids, and several plasmids in the 12 to 15 Mdal size range. Nitrogenase induction and activity in Beggiatoa alba were studied with respect to the effects of oxygen, pH, temperature, and nitrogenous compounds. Induction required microaerobic conditions. Nitrate and nitrite repressed induction, but glutamine did not. A pH optimum of 6.5 to 8.0 and a temperature optimum of 29$\sp\circ$C were observed. Nitrogenase activity was immediately and incompletely inhibited by ammonium, but was not inhibited by …
Adolescent Alcohol Expectancies And Alcohol Use As Functions Of Familial Factors., Andrew Ward Millar
Adolescent Alcohol Expectancies And Alcohol Use As Functions Of Familial Factors., Andrew Ward Millar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In an extension of Brown, Creamer and Stetson (1987), this study investigated the relationships between components of family life, adolescent drinking and alcohol expectancies. Alcohol expectancies are defined as the learned associations between alcohol consumption and the results of drinking. Out of 73 adolescent (12- to 18-year old) subjects screened, 55 met criteria and participated in two comparisons with multiple dependent variables. In the first of these, 15 subjects who were exposed to alcoholics for at least 75% of their lives were found to have stronger expectations that alcohol would provide cognitive and motor enhancement than did 15 matched subjects …

To Be West Indian: Autobiography And West Indian Literature., Margaret Kent Bass
To Be West Indian: Autobiography And West Indian Literature., Margaret Kent Bass
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although some critics claim that autobiography is not a West Indian literary mode, I maintain that autobiography, of a special West Indian variety, is necessarily present, for it provides a way of defining the self and bringing the parts of the self together into a unified and coherent whole. Autobiography is the genre that oppressed and colonized populations have traditionally used to write themselves into history and to proclaim their humanity to the world. The writing of autobiography is essential to the process of decolonization, for the colonized must define themselves and recreate themselves in their own images thereby resisting …
Kinetics Of Chromate And Phosphate Sorption By Oxide Minerals And Soils., David S. Burden
Kinetics Of Chromate And Phosphate Sorption By Oxide Minerals And Soils., David S. Burden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A nonlinear multireaction model was used to describe kinetic retention data sets for chromate, phosphate, arsenate, borate, fluoride, molybdate, selenite, and silicate by goethite, an iron oxide mineral, and selected soils. These data sets were obtained from laboratory batch experiments with time up to 24 h. Either a three-parameter version of the model consisting of one nonlinear reversible and one first order irreversible reaction, or a five-parameter version consisting of two nonlinear reversible and one first order irreversible reactions was capable of predicting anion sorption by goethite. A mechanistic model consistent with the nonlinear multireaction approach was also proposed in …
The Affective Variant Hypothesis: How Is Bulimia Nervosa Related To Depression?, Rita C. Prather
The Affective Variant Hypothesis: How Is Bulimia Nervosa Related To Depression?, Rita C. Prather
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Bulimia nervosa patients frequently score from mild to severe on measures of depressive symptoms. This association between bulimia nervosa and depression led some researchers to hypothesize that bulimia nervosa is a variant of the affective disorder of depression. The main purpose of this study was to provide further evaluation of the affective variant hypothesis of bulimia nervosa. It was postulated that bulimia nervosa patients with and without depression would differ from each other and from depressives without eating disorders on specific measures of cognitive, behavioral, and somatic symptoms associated with depression. Secondly, it was hypothesized that the nondepressed and depressed …
