Effect Of Diet On Respiratory Fuel Mixture, Insulin Sensitivity, And Autonomic Nervous System Function., Heli J. Roy
Effect Of Diet On Respiratory Fuel Mixture, Insulin Sensitivity, And Autonomic Nervous System Function., Heli J. Roy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Introduction. A high amount of dietary fat has been shown to have a negative effect on metabolism, causing insulin resistance, weight gain, and other metabolic alterations. Several studies have found a direct link between lack of activity and obesity. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to see if a diet had an effects on insulin sensitivity, autonomic nervous system function, and substrate utilization as predicted by Flatt, in healthy young men. Subjects. The subjects studied were 6 nonathletes (NA), 6 aerobically trained (AT), and 5 weight trained (WT) men. Their body mass index (BMI) was 22.1 $\pm$ 2.92 kg/m$\sp2$ …
Image Analysis Quantification Of Decondensation Of Bovine Spermatozoa And Pcr Amplification Of A Y Chromosome Specific Sequence., Hilde Christina Steinholt
Image Analysis Quantification Of Decondensation Of Bovine Spermatozoa And Pcr Amplification Of A Y Chromosome Specific Sequence., Hilde Christina Steinholt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The first objective of this research was to develop a decondensation treatment for bovine spermatozoal DNA that worked consistently across bulls and breeds. The second objective was to use the decondensed DNA for polymerase chain reaction analysis of levels of Y-bearing spermatozoa in different ejaculates and in sex sorted spermatozoa. Decondensation of spermatozoa with dithiothreitol and potassium hydroxide was compatible with in vitro amplification and did not inhibit amplification. The polymerase chain reaction and image analysis were used to differentiate between proportions of Y spermatozoa by measuring fluorescent intensities of electrophoresed, polymerase chain reaction-amplified DNA. There were differences in intensities …
Molecular Systematics Of Red Algae., Jeffrey Craig Bailey
Molecular Systematics Of Red Algae., Jeffrey Craig Bailey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Phylogenetic analyses of nucleotide sequences for the nuclear-encoded small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU) gene were used to test current hypotheses of relationships within the Corallinales and among the florideophycidaean orders of red algae. Analyses of SSU gene sequences indicate that the order Corallinales includes four major lineages. The Sporolithaceae is resolved as the earliest-diverging lineage within the order and forms the sister group to a monophyletic Corallinaceae. The molecular data also support the monophyly of the subfamilies Melobesioideae and Corallinoideae. The latter subfamily is inferred as sister to a fourth lineage including non-geniculate and geniculate species classified in the subfamilies …
Immobilization Of P. Digitatum And Bioconversion Of Limonene To Alpha-Terpineol., Qiang Tan
Immobilization Of P. Digitatum And Bioconversion Of Limonene To Alpha-Terpineol., Qiang Tan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The parameters of bioconversion of limonene to $\alpha$-terpineol by Penicillium digitatum were determined. This bioconversion was carried out stereo-specifically and selectively by this fungus. (R)-(+)-limonene was selectively converted to (R)-(+)-$\alpha$-terpineol by mycelia of this fungus during early growth phase. Immobilization of the fungal mycelia for use in continuous production of this product was possible. Aeration was critical to this bioconversion. The optimum aeration was about 1.6 mg/L for growing cells and immobilized cells. Substrate inhibition of the bioconversion was not observed when the substrate concentration was below 4% (v/v). End product inhibition was observed. The $\rm Ki\sb{app}$ was 12.08 mM. …
Reduction And Management Of Vibrio Vulnificus In Gulf Coast Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica)., Yu-Pin Chen
Reduction And Management Of Vibrio Vulnificus In Gulf Coast Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica)., Yu-Pin Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The AmeriPure Process (AmeriPure Oyster Company, New Orleans, Louisiana), which is a mild heat treatment for a specific time period, proved effective in eliminating Vibrio vulnificus from the Gulf Coast oysters (Crassostrea virginica), thus reducing the risk of possible V. vulnificus infections. The treatment was effective in the reduction of V. vulnificus in both $1.5\times10\sp5$ MPN/g (high artificially contaminated level) and $2.4\times10\sp3$ MPN/g (low artificially contaminated level) to undetectable level (MPN $<$ 3/g). The mild heat treatment also reduced naturally occurring V. vulnificus $(8.9\pm3.7\times10\sp4$ MPN/g) present in shellstock oysters harvested in warmer months to undetectable levels. The D value for V. vulnificus present in shellstock oyster averaged 45.6 $\pm$ 3.3 seconds at the AmeriPure Process temperature. Mild heat treatment can also control aerobic plate count numbers during refrigerated storage (0-2$\sp\circ$C) and extend the shelf-life of raw oysters for at least 7 days over unprocessed samples. Mild heat treated oysters need to be refrigerated (${<}4\sp\circ$C) to ensure the safety and quality, as well as shelf-life. Oysters treated according to the AmeriPure Process when exposed to an average room temperature of 27$\sp\circ$C were found unacceptable after 24 hours due to the high number of aerobic plate count (10$\sp7$ CFU/g) and were considered not safe to eat. Although there was a slight lightening in color, sensory panels, composed of both traditional raw oyster consumers and infrequent consumers, found the treated product to be comparable in flavor, texture and smell to untreated oysters. According to the result of sensory evaluation, the good oyster flavor of treated samples increased and the off-flavor and off-odor of the treated oysters were significantly lower than the control samples after 7 days of storage on ice. Possible temperature variations, which could occur during the transportation and storage were studied in a temperature abuse study. The result showed that no Vibrio vulnificus was recovered and no significant microbiological quality change was observed after 10 hours of exposure to the room temperature of $22\pm2\sp\circ$C.

Genetic Components Of (Co)Variance For Postweaning Growth, Carcass Composition And Meat Quality Traits Among Brahman-Influenced Beef Steers., D. H. Denny Crews Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A genetic analysis was conducted on preweaning and postweaning growth and carcass composition records from steers produced in two long-term crossbreeding studies. In phase I, Angus (A), Brahman (B), Brangus (BR), Charolais (C) and Hereford (H) sires produced straightbred, F$\sb1$, back-cross, three-breed cross and 2- and 3-breed rotational crossbred steers (N = 708) from 1960 to 1968. Straightbred, F$\sb1$, back-cross, three-breed cross and 2-, 3- and 4-breed rotational crossbred steers (N = 1530) were produced from 1970 to 1988 by A, B, C and H sires in phase II. Direct and maternal additive and non-additive genetic effect contrasts were obtained. …
Foraging Behavior And Habitat Selection Of Insectivorous Migratory Songbirds At Gulf Coast Stopover Sites In Spring., Chao-Chieh Chen
Foraging Behavior And Habitat Selection Of Insectivorous Migratory Songbirds At Gulf Coast Stopover Sites In Spring., Chao-Chieh Chen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Abundance of some species of Nearctic-Neotropical migrants has been declining dramatically since 1970. Most literature about Neotropical migrants is from the breeding grounds, and some is from the wintering grounds; very little is from stopover sites. I studied foraging behavior and habitat selection of insectivorous migratory songbirds at three stopover sites along northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico during spring migrations of 1993-1995. Each migrant species had its unique combination of foraging behavior and habitat use during stopover. Migrants selected certain habitat strata and plant species and avoided others. The decrease of understory vegetation in the reduced plots had …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Listeria monocytogenes has the potential to be a serious pathogen for the compromised health segment of our population (immunocompromised, young, elderly and the pregnant). While the infectious dose is generally believed to be high 1.0 $\times$ 10$\sp6$, infectious dosages of 1.0 $\times$ 10$\sp3$ have been reported. Listeria monocytogenes poses a threat because of several factors: ubiquity in nature, isolation from fresh/salt waters, soil, ruminates and 17% of the human population. Listeria monocytogenes can colonize surfaces within 20 minutes, evade sanitizing, and is capable of growth from 37$\sp\circ$C to below refrigeration temperature. Fish and seafoods are high in water activity and …
Analysis Of The Influence Of Genotype On Cayenne Pepper Fruit-Receptacle Detachment., Kay P. Gersch
Analysis Of The Influence Of Genotype On Cayenne Pepper Fruit-Receptacle Detachment., Kay P. Gersch
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Two genotypes of cayenne pepper, Capsicum annuum L., were identified that differ significantly in ease of fruit detachment. Both greenhouse and field-grown plants of these genotypes, Cajun 1-9027 and Cap-9004, were investigated for differences in cell type and organization at the fruit-receptacle junction. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that mature fruit of Cajun 1-9027, which did not separate, exhibited a distinct region of sclerified cells that extended from the periphery of the fruit into the receptacle for at least 15 cell layers. In contrast, mature fruit of the more readily detachable Cap-9004 had fewer sclerified cells at the region of detachment. …
A Physiological Study Of Common Carpetgrass (Axonopus Affinis) Subjected To Cultural And Environmental Stress., Edward Wayne Bush
A Physiological Study Of Common Carpetgrass (Axonopus Affinis) Subjected To Cultural And Environmental Stress., Edward Wayne Bush
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Common carpetgrass (Axonopus affinis Chase) is a low maintenance stoloniferous grass widely distributed throughout the southern coastal plains of the United States. This study investigated seed germination enhancement, seedhead suppression, waterlogging tolerance, winter hardiness, and maintenance practices for common carpetgrass. Pre-soaking common carpetgrass and centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro.) Hack.) seed was beneficial at the 30C germination temperature. Priming seed in KNO$\sb3$ solutions significantly accelerated seed germination of both centipedegrass and carpetgrass at 30C, and increased total germination percentage of centipedegrass. At 20 and 25C, seed priming significantly improved mean time of germination for both grass species and total germination percentage …

Immunocytochemical Localization Of Gonadotropins, Growth Hormone, And Prolactin In Equine Pituitary., Mohammad Saeed Rahmanian
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The present research was performed to characterize immunoreactive (ir) pituitary cells in the equine species. Two experiments were performed to measure the prevalence of single- and double-hormone labeled gonadotropes, lactotropes, somatotropes, and mammosomatotropes. In Experiments 1 and 2, pituitaries from three intact pony mares were processed for ultrastructural evaluation of cells stained for luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), and growth hormone (GH). Primary antibodies and gold-conjugated antibodies were used to double-stain ir-cells. The percentages of pituitary cells stained for each hormone in intact mares were: total gonadotropes, 15 to 32%; LH-only, 2 to 16%; FSH-only, 1 to …
Dairy Herd Improvement Records As Replacement Of Technician Breeding Receipt Database For Routine Estimates Of Non-Return Rates For Al Bulls In Technician-Devoid Areas., Rick A. Baron
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The objective of this study was to find whether DHI data could be used to estimate sire non-return rates to replace current technician data estimates. Bull weighted least squares means for non-return rates were calculated separately for five overlapping 60-90 day service periods from each data source. Models included stud, sire, service number, and linear and quadratic form of breeding month for both data sources, service unit for technician and lactation for DHI data. Sire and lactation were not significant $(P > .10).$ Technician differences $(P < .05)$ were in service unit, stud, service number, and linear and quadratic service month in all but one service period. DHI differed $(P < .05)$ for service number, month (linear and quadratic), and stud in two service periods. Technician R-square values were 0.23 to 0.28 versus 0.94 to 0.96 for DHI. Sire estimated non-return rates were weighted using the inverted estimator standard error squared and compared. Sire, stud, data source, service period, and appropriate interactions were modeled. Weighted bull non-returns differed $(P < .01)$ in magnitude across data sources. Stud, data source by stud, and sire within stud by data source were significant $(P .10).$ Four fertility categories based on mean and standard deviation of the weighted estimates were formed within the data sources across service periods. These categories were correlated (0.5 $>$ r $>$ 0.9) and 52.9 to 87.4% congruent within data source for adjacent …

Immunodiagnosis Of Fasciolosis By Detection Of Coproantigen., Salma Mohamed Abdel-Rahman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A monoclonal antibody (MAb)-based western blot analysis (WB) was developed for detection of a 26-28 kD coproantigen in Fasciola hepatica infected cattle. Using WB the coproantigen was detected in feces from experimentally infected calves with 22 flukes or more. Using the biotin-streptavidin modification of WB, antigen was detected in the feces from experimentally-infected calves with 10 flukes or more as early as 6 weeks post-infection. The MAbs did not react with the ES of Paramphistomum sp. or Moniezia sp, but showed slight cross-reactivity with ES from F. gigantica, and there was moderate cross-reactivity with Fascioloides magna ES. Differential staining of …
The Relationship Of Hemolymph Sugar, Juvenile Hormone And Biogenic Amines To The Three Behavioral States Of Mature Honey Bees., Janko Bozic
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Differences in sugar titers, JH synthesis rate and biogenic amine metabolism correlated with three distinct activity groups or mature bees: resting bees, followers and dancers. Dancers had lower trehalose titers than followers or resting bees. In absconding bees trehalose titers were even lower, due to greatly elevated locomotor activity. The collecting and transferring of food by dancers and followers resulted in a higher glucose titer than in resting bees. Followers had a higher-JH synthesis rate than dancers, suggesting that JH could be an internal motivational stimulus to recruit followers to forage. Dancers and followers collect and transfer food and therefore …

The life cycle of the beetle consists of an egg stage, four larval instars, prepupal, pupal and adult stages. There were no significant differences in the effect of host plant on duration of development of immature beetles (p = 0.3353). The mean duration of development from oviposition to adult emergence ranged from 26.6 d on turnip to 27.5 d on …
Satisfaction With Health Care: A Predictor Of Hemodialysis Patient Compliance., Pamela Gay Davis
Satisfaction With Health Care: A Predictor Of Hemodialysis Patient Compliance., Pamela Gay Davis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Several studies in general medical populations have demonstrated the positive relation between satisfaction with health care and compliance with treatment recommendations. Overall, the compliance literature suggests that the behavior of the health care provider can influence patient compliance and the resulting health outcome. However, the relation between patient satisfaction and compliance with the hemodialysis regimen has not been examined. Because of this populations' frequent and extensive interaction with the dialysis staff, exploration of the effects of satisfaction with these relationships and the care provided on patient compliance appears to be an important health care issue. This study evaluated the ability …

Effects Of Inoculation And Wilting On The Preservation And Utilization Of Wheat Forage, C. C. Williams, M. A. Froetschel, L. O. Ely, H. E. Amos
Faculty Publications
Wheat forage was harvested at an early head stage of maturity and ensiled in 12 900-kg experimental silos at three percentages of DM (20.8% for direct-cut forage and 27.9 or 39.3% for wilted forage) either with or without application of a lactic acid bacterial inoculant. The objective was to test the efficacy of the inoculant to alter silage fermentation, preservation, and nutritive value of wheat forage ensiled at different moisture percentages because of wilting. Wilting enhanced DM preservation and decreased fermentation end products. Inoculation made the fermentation more homolactic but did not enhance DM preservation. Silage rations (80% DM as …

Seedlings from two half‐sib families of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii Engelm. differing in sensitivity to ozone were grown in open‐top chambers for 22 months under simulated acidic rain (pH 3‐3) and four concentrations of ozone. The ozone concentrations were: charcoal‐filtered air (CF); non‐filtered ambient air (NF); twice the NF level (2X), thrice the NF level (3X). Ozone exposures were computer controlled to follow diurnal and seasonal fluctuations in ambient ozone concentrations. On two days, 24 April and 29 May, in the spring of 1990, trees were sampled repeatedly for xylem water potential, needle conductance and photosynthesis from sunrise to sunset …
Reducing Burden And Distress In Caregivers Of Dementia Patients., Christopher David Sletten
Reducing Burden And Distress In Caregivers Of Dementia Patients., Christopher David Sletten
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
As the prevalence and diagnosis of dementia have become more clearly delineated, there has been an increasing focus on the consequences of dementia on the family members that care for these individuals. Much of the attention has focused on who provides care and what impact that caregiving has on them. It has been well documented that the patient's family is responsible for much of the caregiving. These caregivers often experience both a physical and psychological impact from their role. Because of these negative consequences, several studies have investigated interventions designed to reduce caregiver distress. Most of these studies have incorporated …

Selenium Speciation In Natural Waters: Separation Technique, Kinetic And Case Studies., William Charles Glover
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Several methods of separating the dissolved 4+ and 6+ oxidation states of selenium were investigated. The use of Dowex 1 anion exchange resin in packed columns was not satisfactory as quantitative separation was not obtained. The determination of selenite after formation of a fluorescent complex with 2,4-diaminonaphthalene was quantitative but the procedure was too involved for routine work. Separation was achieved by co-precipitating the selenite from solution with ferric hydroxide precipitate formed between pH 5 and 6. The co-precipitation technique is effective from 4 to 50 degrees centigrade and is unaffected by salinity although phosphates interfere at high concentrations. The …

Pollen Influence On Developmental Physiology Of Southern Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium Corymbosum) Fruit., Yue He Huang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
To study the physiological and biochemical effects of pollen sources on fruit growth and development of southern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum hybrids), five-year old 'Sharpblue' plants were grown in a greenhouse for self- and cross-pollination experiments. Cross-pollination with 'Gulfcoast' and 'O'Neal' as pollen sources increased fruit weight by 58.2% and 54.9%, respectively, compared to self-pollination. Coincidentally, cross-pollination doubled the number of mature ovules, and increased their size by 14%. Ovule abortion occurred between 5 and 10 days after pollination (DAP) in both pollination treatments. More abortion occurred in self-pollination (35%), compared with cross-pollination (22% for 'Sharpblue' $\times$ 'O'Neal' and 29% …
Changes Of Antioxidants And Fatty Acid Composition In Stabilized Rice Bran During Storage., Taisun Shin
Changes Of Antioxidants And Fatty Acid Composition In Stabilized Rice Bran During Storage., Taisun Shin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effects of extrusion temperature and post extrusion holding time, microwave heating, and gamma irradiation on antioxidants and lipid composition in rice bran were studied. Post extrusion holding time had no apparent effect on rice bran stability. Increased holding times reduced (p $<$ 0.05) total vitamin E. Oryzanol concentration was lower (p $<$ 0.05) only with 6 min holding time. Inactivation of lipolytic enzymes was obtained by extrusion temperatures of 120, 130, and 140$\sp\circ$C. Increased extrusion temperatures reduced the retention of vitamin E and oryzanol during storage. An extrusion temperature of 110$\sp\circ$C provided the highest retention of vitamin E and oryzanol during storage although FFA level was higher (p $<$ 0.05) than that of the other extrusion temperatures from 105 to 375 days. There were no significant (p $>$ 0.05) decreases in individual vitamin E vitamers until 4 min microwave heating. After 8 min heating, individual E vitamers decreased significantly (p $$ 0.05) in FFA level by 24 weeks of storage with microwave heating for 12 min. Microwave heating for 4, 8, and 12 min did not provided adequate inactivation of lipolytic enzymes. Total vitamin …$>

Using Drawing Tasks To Communicate Ideas About Photosynthesis: A Conceptual Change Strategy For Use In The Elementary School Classroom., Byron Levy Launey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It is difficult for a teacher to determine if a learner has acquired an accurate concept of the topic being taught. Most of the children in this study had sufficient language skills to communicate successfully with their teachers even though they held inappropriate concepts of photosynthesis. This study examined the use of drawing tasks to assess children's ideas related to photosynthesis in an elementary-grade classroom. Two research questions guided the study to determine if this strategy was a valid improvement over traditional methods of classroom instruction. The first question asked if elementary-grade students receiving instruction about photosynthesis would acquire and …
