Interactions between sugarcane, Saccharum spp., and the invasive species Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini (Dyar), were evaluated in field experiments and in the greenhouse with rice, Oryza sativa L., as an additional host. By determining adult emergence holes together with percent bored internodes, a novel method for evaluating sugarcane cultivar resistance was developed. In 2001, LCP 85-384 had the greatest moth production per hectare, significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05) than HoCP 85-845. High levels of sodium and magnesium salt stress in the soil were associated with higher E. loftini injury in all cultivars except HoCP 91-555 and CP 70-321. Irrigation …

Effects Of A Primary Care Weight Management Intervention On Physical Activity In Low-Income African American Women, Gareth R. Dutton Jan 2005

Effects Of A Primary Care Weight Management Intervention On Physical Activity In Low-Income African American Women, Gareth R. Dutton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Although physical inactivity is associated with numerous medical conditions, most individuals do not engage in recommended levels of physical activity. Certain subgroups of the population are particularly inactive, including women, African Americans, and individuals with lower income and less education. While research suggests that interventions targeting physical activity can produce significant improvements in activity and cardiorespiratory fitness, there is less research examining physical activity interventions for these at-risk groups. In particular, there is a lack of research examining primary care physical activity interventions among low-income, African American women. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of …

Estimating The Postmortem Interval In Forensic Cases Through The Analysis Of Postmortem Deterioration Of Human Head Hair, Jamie Hughes Collier

LSU Master's Theses

Establishing the postmortem interval (PMI) of a decedent is one of the most important responsibilities a forensic investigator may face. An accurate PMI may aid in the identification of not only the victim, but also a suspect. Although many methods for determining time since death have been proposed, there is still a need to establish more reliable dating techniques. This study determines whether head hair from an individual deteriorates uniformly and if so, what association cuticle damage, fungal growth, and changes in proximal end morphology may have with PMI. Fifteen to 25 scalp hairs were pulled from nine cadavers located …

Effect Of Chromium Propionate And Fat Source On Growth, Carcass Traits, And Meat Quality In Swine And The Effect Of Chromium Propionate On Growth And Carcass Traits In Broilers, Ashunti Ria Jackson Jan 2005

Effect Of Chromium Propionate And Fat Source On Growth, Carcass Traits, And Meat Quality In Swine And The Effect Of Chromium Propionate On Growth And Carcass Traits In Broilers, Ashunti Ria Jackson

LSU Master's Theses

Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of the chromium propionate (CrProp) in swine and poultry diets. Two broiler experiments, each utilizing 1,460 Ross X Ross broilers, were conducted to evaluate the effects of 0, 200, 400, or 800 ppb CrProp on growth performance and carcass traits in 0 to 42 and 0 to 49 d-old broilers. In Exp. 1, 400 ppb Cr decreased (P < 0.10) ADG and G:F in the grower phase, but mortality was reduced (P < 0.10) in broilers fed 200 ppb or 800 ppb Cr. In the finisher phase, G:F was increased (P < 0.10) in broilers fed all dietary levels of Cr, and mortality was reduced (P < 0.10) in broilers fed 200 and 400 ppb Cr. Chromium did not affect the overall growth data or carcass traits. In Exp. 2, CrProp did not affect growth performance. The results indicated that Cr as CrProp improved G:F in the later phases of growth and reduced mortality in Exp. 1 but not in Exp. 2. In Exp. 3, 108 crossbred Yorkshire gilts were used to examine the effects of 0 or 200 ppb CrProp on iodine value, fatty acid profile of fat, growth, carcass traits, and pork quality from gilts fed tallow or choice white grease (CWG). Chromium decreased (P < 0.03) 10th rib back fat and increased (P < 0.02) percent muscle. Gain:feed was increased (P < 0.003) and ADFI decreased by fat addition. Fat increased hot carcass weight (P < 0.07) and dressing percent (P < 0.02). Average back fat, 9th rib CL, and total loss were decreased (P = 0.02 to 0.04) by tallow. Belly width was increased (P < 0.08) by tallow, but belly bending on both the teatline and scribe side were increased (P = 0.004 to 0.01) by CWG. Iodine values on belly and loin samples were increased (P < 0.001) by CWG. Overall, Cr affected BF and percent muscle and the inclusion of tallow decreased (P = 0.03 to 0.09) belly and loin iodine value further than CWG or no added fat.

Ozone Degradation Of Off-Flavors In Catfish, Tameka Lashon Dew Jan 2005

Ozone Degradation Of Off-Flavors In Catfish, Tameka Lashon Dew

LSU Master's Theses

In the United States aquaculture is a billion dollar industry. Aquaculture is essentially the production of aquatic organisms under controlled conditions. Although conditions are controlled to a certain degree, absolute control is not possible. This reason alone is a huge problem that can cost the industry millions of dollars a year. In catfish, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol are two compounds are primarily responsible for imparting a musty/earthy off-flavor. Off- flavors are secondary metabolites of some blue-green algae and actinomycete bacteria. When present in fish tissue they create an undesirable taste. Different approaches have been used in order to alleviate the problem …

The Role Of Teachers' Self-Efficacy In Increasing Children's Physical Activity, James Frederick Roth Jan 2005

The Role Of Teachers' Self-Efficacy In Increasing Children's Physical Activity, James Frederick Roth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

It is well documented that elementary school children do not participate in recommended amounts of physical activity, and that elementary physical education programs generally are unable to insure that children engage in appropriate amounts of activity. One solution to this dilemma is to increase children’s activity levels through collaborative efforts such as whole school programs involving the classroom teachers. If this approach is to be successful, it is important to investigate ways that elementary classroom teachers can be actively involved in school level programs that will ultimately increase children’s physical activity levels. Elementary classroom teachers are often responsible for at …

Regulation Of Glucose Metabolism In Dairy Cattle, Christie Cheatham Stanley Jan 2005

Regulation Of Glucose Metabolism In Dairy Cattle, Christie Cheatham Stanley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The experiments described herein are designed to elucidate many metabolic changes that occur to regulate the partitioning of nutrients between production and animal maintenance with particular regard to glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. The onset of milk production and parturition causes dramatic stress to the cow. The challenge of improving metabolism during this period is being addressed by nutritional management with the possibility of the addition of supplements. The use of Ca-propionate as a supplement did not affect glucose metabolism in transition cows. The data revealed that insulin sensitivity was low during the transition period, but the tissue responses to …

Moreover, it decreased pasting time, resulting in the faster swelling upon heating and less rigid gel formation upon cooling. …

Associating Molecular Markers With Phenotypes In Sweetpotatoes And Liriopogons Using Multivariate Statistical Modeling, Thomas Mwamburi Mcharo Jan 2005

Associating Molecular Markers With Phenotypes In Sweetpotatoes And Liriopogons Using Multivariate Statistical Modeling, Thomas Mwamburi Mcharo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Two horticultural crops, the ornamental liriopogon and the sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.], were analyzed for morphological, quantitative and molecular marker variation using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) and various multivariate statistical techniques. Ornamental cultivars in genera Liriope and Ophiopogon were analyzed for relatedness using AFLP marker data and statistical clustering methods. Marker data did not substantiate the separation of these two genera. Greater than 95 % of the total genetic variability present was attributed to within group variation (P < 0.05). Trait-linked molecular markers were identified using Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, logistic regression and discriminant analysis in the studies involving sweetpotato. The traits studied included dry matter content, virus disease resistance, root-knot nematode resistance, sugar content and -carotene content. Analysis of molecular variance found significant (P <0.001) differences between two phenotypic groups from unrelated genotypes for dry matter data. Using 14 markers selected through discriminant analysis the phenotypic grouping was validated with a zero error rate. Eighty-seven F1 sweetpotato genotypes from a cross of ‘Tanzania’ and ‘Wagabolige’ landraces were used to generate AFLP and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker profiles for this study. One AFLP marker linked to sweetpotato chlorotic stunt closterovirus resistance and one RAPD marker linked to sweetpotato feathery mottle virus resistance previously identified by traditional mapping strategies were selected plus new markers. Two diverse F1 populations of sweetpotato were used to identify and select markers suitable for identification of plants possessing a resistant reaction to southern root-knot nematode race 3 [Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood]. Results for plant nematode resistance indicated a binomial distribution among the genotypes for population 1 and a normal distribution for population 2. A comparison of the power of discriminant analysis models for southern root-knot nematode resistance class prediction achieved 88% classification efficiencies. An F1 population of 73 clones consisting of parents and half-sibs was grouped into 2 phenotypic classes based on their sugar and ß-carotene content. Logistic regression and discriminant analysis selected meaningful markers that had significant associations with each of the traits. These results validated discriminant analysis and logistic regression as meaningful trait-linked marker selection methods.

A Radiographic Study Of The Impact Of Race And Sex On 1st And 2nd Molar Development, Suzanne Price

LSU Master's Theses

The assessment of child development requires standards in order to compare an apparent physiologic age to an actual chronological age. In assessing chronological age of an individual, the use of multiple indicators is ideal and important in determining age at death. For individuals under the age of about 21 years, dental development is the most reliable indicator of age. Research aimed at understanding the variation in tooth formation due to race and sex will help to more accurately determine the age at death of remains of subadult individuals. This project examined the impact of race, sex, and time period on …
