Louisiana Survey 2007, Lsu Reilly Center For Media & Public Affairs Jan 2007

Louisiana Survey 2007, Lsu Reilly Center For Media & Public Affairs

Reilly Center Louisiana Surveys

The 2007 Louisiana Survey was the first to note the beginnings of a shift from the intense rebuilding focus that had characterized the state since hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the southern regions of the state. Instead, focus shifted to ongoing issues both affected by the hurricanes and independent from them in the state in general, such as:

  • majority of Louisianans expressed the opinion that the state was heading in the wrong direction
  • relocation, voting, and issues for displaced Louisianans
  • ethics reform
  • attitudes towards insurance companies and insurance reform
  • uses for the Louisiana budget surplus

Single Photons On Demand From Tunable 3d Photonic Band-Gap Structures, S. Scheel, M. Florescu, H. Häffner, H. Lee, D. V. Strekalov, P. L. Knight, J. P. Dowling Jan 2007

Single Photons On Demand From Tunable 3d Photonic Band-Gap Structures, S. Scheel, M. Florescu, H. Häffner, H. Lee, D. V. Strekalov, P. L. Knight, J. P. Dowling

Faculty Publications

In this article we propose to build a (semi-)deterministic photon gun by modifying the spontaneous decay in a photonic band-gap material. We show that such a device allows for deterministic and unidirectional single-photon emission with a repetition rate of the order of 100 kHz. We describe a specific realization of the 1D band-gap model by means of a 3D photonic-crystal heterostructure and the feasability of implementing such a device using Er3+ ions that produce single photons at the telecommunication wavelength of 1.55,m, important for many applications.

The Role Of The Specific, Profilaggrin-Containing Keratohyalin Granules In The Developing Epidermis Of The Fetal Horse Hoof, Hermann H. Bragulla, Dominique G. Homberger Jan 2007

The Role Of The Specific, Profilaggrin-Containing Keratohyalin Granules In The Developing Epidermis Of The Fetal Horse Hoof, Hermann H. Bragulla, Dominique G. Homberger

Faculty Publications

The adult equine hoof is subdivided into distinct segments with various keratinization modes. In the periople and bulbs of the heel, the epidermis forms a Stratum granulosum with basophilic keratohyalin granules during soft keratinization, whereas in the coronet, wall proper, sole, and frog, the epidermis undergoes hard keratinization by keratinizing and comifying without forming keratohyalin granules. The present study tests the hypothesis that the presence of specific (profilaggrin-containing) keratohyalin granules in the hoof epidermis is correlated with the water-binding capacity and mechanical properties of the hoof horn. To identify these specific profilaggrin-containing keratohyalin granules, tissue samples of fetal hooves were …

Fundamental Decoherence From Quantum Gravity: A Pedagogical Review, Rodolfo Gambini, Rafael A. Porto, Jorge Pullin Jan 2007

Fundamental Decoherence From Quantum Gravity: A Pedagogical Review, Rodolfo Gambini, Rafael A. Porto, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We present a discussion of the fundamental loss of unitarity that appears in quantum mechanics due to the use of a physical apparatus to measure time. This induces a decoherence effect that is independent of any interaction with the environment and appears in addition to any usual environmental decoherence. The discussion is framed self consistently and aimed to general physicists. We derive the modified Schrödinger equation that arises in quantum mechanics with real clocks and discuss the theoretical and potential experimental implications of this process of decoherence. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Density, Territory Size, And Long-Term Spatial Dynamics Of A Guild Of Terrestrial Insectivorous Birds Near Manaus, Brazil, Philip C. Stouffer Jan 2007

Density, Territory Size, And Long-Term Spatial Dynamics Of A Guild Of Terrestrial Insectivorous Birds Near Manaus, Brazil, Philip C. Stouffer

Faculty Publications

From 1994 to 2003, I annually surveyed terrestrial insectivorous birds in a 100-ha plot within continuous rainforest near Manaus, Brazil. I used spot-map registrations and radiotagged birds to estimate territory size and density on the plot for 13 species. As in the few previous studies of Amazonian birds, territory sizes were large (mean = 13.0 ha) and densities were low (mean = 3.4 pairs per 100 ha). The most common species, Formicarius colma, was the only species with >10 pairs per 100 ha, and one of four species (with Myrmeciza ferruginea, Conopophaga aurita, and Corythopis torquaius) to have territories of …

An Analytical Approach To Vibraphone Performance Through The Transcription And Analysis Of Gary Burton's Solo On Blue Monk, Charles Bryant Brooks Jan 2007

An Analytical Approach To Vibraphone Performance Through The Transcription And Analysis Of Gary Burton's Solo On Blue Monk, Charles Bryant Brooks

LSU Major Papers

The purpose of this study is to gain a insight into the realm of solo jazz vibraphone performance through the transcription and analysis of Gary Burton's improvised solo on "Blue Monk" by Thelonious Monk, recorded on the Album Face to Face with pianist Makoto Ozone. Gary Burton is the inventor of the "Burton grip," a four-mallet grip used for vibraphone performance. His individual approach to playing the vibraphone and highly developed technique seem unattainable for many students of percussion. Nonetheless, many vibraphonists, including Burton, have published method books about his grip and its application. In order to emulate his style diligent …

Characteristics Of Reduced Fat Milks As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, K. Achanta, C. A. Boeneke, K. J. Aryana Jan 2007

Characteristics Of Reduced Fat Milks As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, K. Achanta, C. A. Boeneke, K. J. Aryana

Faculty Publications

Folic acid plays an important role in the prevention of neural tube defects (e.g., spina bifida and anencephaly), heart defects, facial clefts, urinary abnormalities, and limb deficiencies. Milk and milk products serve as a potential source for folic acid fortification because of the presence of folate-binding proteins that seem to be involved in folate bioavailability. Although milk is not a good source of folic acid, fortification could help in the prevention of the above-mentioned defects. The objective of this study was to examine the physicochemical characteristics of reduced fat milks fortified with folic acid. Reduced fat milks were prepared using …

Voices In Cultural Heritage Preservation: A Comparative Study Between New Orleans And Changting (China), Guiyuan Wang Jan 2007

Voices In Cultural Heritage Preservation: A Comparative Study Between New Orleans And Changting (China), Guiyuan Wang

LSU Master's Theses

This is a comparative study between the historic preservation in two countries – the United States (New Orleans) and China (Changting). The main questions are how the voices of different groups become foregrounded or effaced in the dynamics of the political process. Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts -- social capital, cultural capital, and symbolic capital – are applied. The historic preservation in the United States is distinct from that in China. First, the national structures of governments are different, and the historic preservation systems are established in dissimilar ways. Second, at the local level, the question, that who take part in historic …

The Uses Of Enchantment, Anna Belenki Jan 2007

The Uses Of Enchantment, Anna Belenki

LSU Master's Theses

This work begins with the decorative arts. It is inspired by the seductive color and line of Iznik tile from the Ottoman Empire and the ornate decorative flourishes of 18th. Century Chinoiserie wall paper that depicts fantastic landscapes and fanciful animals. The bears, cats, birds, snakes, and dogs and people dressed in costumes that appear in the tiles are the protagonists of a fairy tale yet to be written. The uses of enchantment are endlessly fascinating. Enchantment fulfills our need for fantasy, beauty, meaning and reassurance. It connects us to the past and equips us to face the present, secure …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Dunaliella Tertiolecta As A Candidate Algal Species For Tertiary Wastewater Treatment Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus-Laden Effluents Impacting Marine Environments, Ashley Juanika Belle Jan 2007

Laboratory Evaluation Of Dunaliella Tertiolecta As A Candidate Algal Species For Tertiary Wastewater Treatment Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus-Laden Effluents Impacting Marine Environments, Ashley Juanika Belle

LSU Master's Theses

Dunaliella tertiolecta was evaluated to determine the effectiveness of utilizing the algal species to reduce the nutrient load of saline wastewater during tertiary treatment. Nutrient uptake studies performed using f/2-Si medium illustrated that Dunaliella tertiolecta favored phosphate uptake over nitrate-nitrogen. Over a 7-day observational period, total phosphorus concentration was reduced by over 97% and the kinetic rate of uptake observed was approximately 0.5 - 1 mg/L/day. Daily nitrate-nitrogen concentrations were highly variable and a model could not be determined to predict uptake behavior. In heavily concentrated nutrient loads, the algae still favored phosphate uptake. However as the nutrient load increased …

The Resurgence Of The Far-Right In European Politics: Analysis Of The French, Italian, Austrian, And Belgian Cases, Nathan Donald Price Jan 2007

The Resurgence Of The Far-Right In European Politics: Analysis Of The French, Italian, Austrian, And Belgian Cases, Nathan Donald Price

LSU Master's Theses

The resurgence of the far-right in European politics has been cause for alarm on a continent which so recently suffered the consequences of the rise of fascism in the early twentieth century. Political observers have looked on anxiously while far-right parties in Austria and Italy have participated in the governing coalitions of those countries. In 2002, Jean Marie Le Pen stunned the world with his advancement into the second round of the French Presidential election. Why is the radical-right so strong right now? Why do voters cast their ballots in support of far-right parties? In this thesis, I have examined …

Prospects For Democratization In The Oil Monarchies Of The Persian Gulf, Julie Gauthier Jan 2007

Prospects For Democratization In The Oil Monarchies Of The Persian Gulf, Julie Gauthier

LSU Master's Theses

The countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (G.C.C.) represent a unique subset of the Arab world, with many common cultural, political, and economic characteristics. This research project is designed to assess the prospects for future democratization in these oil-rich monarchies. Contrary to many other Arab States, these nations have several advantages that bode well for future liberalization, including small, highly educated populations and vast resources. Several have young, progressive-minded rulers who are competing against each other regionally to be more modern and prestigious and enjoy increased influence. Further, these rulers face tremendous pressure to create jobs and opportunity for their …

Reevaluating Age In Subadult Remains In Response To Secular Changes In Skeletal Growth, Katherine Ann Blackwelder Jan 2007

Reevaluating Age In Subadult Remains In Response To Secular Changes In Skeletal Growth, Katherine Ann Blackwelder

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of forensic anthropology is the analysis and identification of human skeletal remains in a medicolegal context (Byers 2005:1-2). A forensic anthropologist can determine the age of subadult remains by various means, including dentition, centers of ossification, cranial suture closure, and epiphyseal union. Epiphyseal union is when all bones have completed their growth and fused, which happens for all bones by early adulthood. In this way, a forensic anthropologist can analyze the extent of epiphyseal union to determine the age of a deceased individual. This is done by comparing the skeletal remains to age-specific x-ray images of bones featured …

Effect Of Culture Conditions On Gene Expression In Manipulated Bovine Embryos, Megan Nicole Purpera Jan 2007

Effect Of Culture Conditions On Gene Expression In Manipulated Bovine Embryos, Megan Nicole Purpera

LSU Master's Theses

Numerous studies have reported aberrant gene expression levels attributed to suboptimal in vitro culture conditions presented to embryos. Since the culture environment is a common aspect of both in vitro production (IVP) and nuclear transfer (NT), research focusing on the in vitro culture system will have the potential to improve both techniques. This study investigated the effects of different culture systems and protein sources on the developmental competence of IVP embryos measured by cleavage and blastocyst rates, cell number, and relative abundance of oct-4, nanog, connexin 43, and GLUT-1 transcripts when compared to in vivo embryos. Experiment 1 compared IVP …

Evaluating The Effect Of Two Commercial Antimicrobial Products On Salmonella Spp. In The Aquatic Habitat Of The Red-Eared Slider Turtle (Trachemys Scripta Elegans), Trevor Theadore Zachariah

LSU Master's Theses

Turtle-associated salmonellosis was recognized as a public health concern in the 1960’s, particularly due to an increase in the incidence of disease among children. In response to the public health threat, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented regulations in 1975 restricting the sale of turtle eggs and turtles with a carapace length less than 10.2 cm. Since that time, attempts to eliminate Salmonella from turtles using antibiotics have been unsuccessful and lead to antibiotic resistant strains of Salmonella on turtle farms. Recent work has focused on identifying non-antibiotic products to suppress or eliminate Salmonella and reverse the …

Criticism Lighting His Fire: Perspectives On Jim Morrison From The Los Angeles Free Press, Down Beat, And The Miami Herald, Melissa Ursula Dawn Goldsmith Jan 2007

Criticism Lighting His Fire: Perspectives On Jim Morrison From The Los Angeles Free Press, Down Beat, And The Miami Herald, Melissa Ursula Dawn Goldsmith

LSU Master's Theses

Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, transcended his mythical personae through the band's songs, his poems, and works about him. Morrison's cult continues today, through pilgrimages to his grave (a major tourist attraction in Paris), Oliver Stone's film The Doors (1991), videos on YouTube.com, rediscoveries of already released recordings, and new discoveries of unreleased recordings, lost films, and unpublished manuscripts of Morrison's poetry. Fans, filmmakers, photographers, the music industry, writers, and members of The Doors have cultivated him into their icon, hierophant, and God. But does myth construction about Morrison possess any goals, continuity, or direction? The music was …

An Assessment Of The Risk Mapping System For The Use Of Managing Loblolly Pine Decline Sites Within Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Habitat, Roger Dale Menard

LSU Master's Theses

A decline of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.), characterized by expanding areas of declining and dead trees, has become prevalent at Fort Benning, Georgia. A 3 year study was conducted to determine the kinds of fungi, insects, and site disturbances associated with this problem. The insects Dendroctonus terebrans, Hylastes salebrosus, Hylastes tenuis, Pachylobius picivorus and Hylobius pales were significantly more abundant in symptomatic than in asymptomatic loblolly pine plots. These root and lower stem-infesting insects consistently carried the fungi Leptographium terebrantis, L. procerum, and L. serpens. Root sampling revealed high levels of root damage and mortality, staining and infection with …

Oblivious Transfer For Secure Communication, Abhishek Parakh Jan 2007

Oblivious Transfer For Secure Communication, Abhishek Parakh

LSU Master's Theses

Over the past four decades, computational power and algorithmic strategies have advanced tremendously resulting in an enormous increase in the key sizes required for secure cryptosystems such as RSA. At the same time, the electronic devices have grown smaller and portable requiring algorithms running on them to be optimized in size and efficiency while providing security, at least, equivalent to that provided on a typical desktop computer. As a result, the industry is moving towards newer cryptosystems such as ECC and NTRU that are well suited for resource constrained environments. While, ECC claims to provide security equivalent to that of …

Grinning With The Devil: The Use Of Humor In Race Record Advertisments, Justin Guidry Jan 2007

Grinning With The Devil: The Use Of Humor In Race Record Advertisments, Justin Guidry

LSU Master's Theses

The advertisements that appeared in black newspapers for race records in the 1920s were employed to interest the buying public in a new mode of music: the rural blues. Although blues music is characterized by its sadness and despair, these advertisements employed humor and cartoon illustrations in the advertisements. While at first thought, this method of advertising seems inappropriate, further examination of advertisers’ and the public’s perceptions of blues music, as well as some of the qualities of the genre itself illuminate these elaborately drawn advertisements. While older modes of plantation stereotyping informed the advertisers and illustrators producing the ads, …

Environmental Factors Influencing The Siting Of Temporary Housing In Orleans Parish, Philip J. Chandler Jan 2007

Environmental Factors Influencing The Siting Of Temporary Housing In Orleans Parish, Philip J. Chandler

LSU Master's Theses

The disaster in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina showcased the city's many environmental problems. The industrial history of the city, subsidence of the city causing it to be below sea-level, and the fact that the city is protected by levees and pumps were critical elements of the disaster and played a large role in the emergency response. The disaster led to an enormous emergency response by many entities, but the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has the lead in these actions. In response to the large number of homes being flooded and unlivable in Orleans Parish, FEMA implemented its …

Marketing Quality To Consumers - Does It Work For Hospital Marketers?, Rebecca Acosta Burdette Jan 2007

Marketing Quality To Consumers - Does It Work For Hospital Marketers?, Rebecca Acosta Burdette

LSU Master's Theses

There's no doubt that the emergence of public report cards and governmental requirements for transparency in healthcare are forcing healthcare providers to work vigorously to improve quality and decrease costs. The results of these report cards and rankings are of interest to consumers - who wouldn't want to know whether or not the healthcare provider you're intrusting your life to is the best. The lengths to which consumers will go to proactively seek this information is another topic within itself; however, if the information is handed to them through strategic marketing and advertising efforts, could the marketing of quality rating …
